• Remove automatic Aero disabling in Windows 7

  Sometimes when I'm playing games which are heavy on the GPU, Windows decides to helpfully disable aero, causing everything to freeze for a bit and in the worst case, combined with ATI's brilliant drivers, causes the game to crash. So, How do I stop Windows from automatically disabling Aero when playing games? It has absolutely no effect on the performance of the game itself when it does that. Also, I'd like to get rid of the "You should disable Aero to improve performance" helpful hint popup which sometimes shows up. But I suppose getting rid of the first will get rid of the second, assuming anyone knows how.

• Windows 2k3 server as a KVM client

  Just wondering if anyone else has had issues installing Windows 2K3 server under KVM. I have tried a few times tonight and keep getting "not a supported platform" when the installation first boots. I've used i686, had acpi and apic off and on, given it 4GB ram, 200GB hard disk and it fails every time. I've done some hunting around, but can't find anything conclusive on google. It is listed as a supported client on the KVM site. Host is Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit, qemu-kmv hypervisor. Drivers, I'm not sure what your asking for there, but the disk is a standard (I believe) 32 bit Win2K3 server. I'm trying to install a bulk standard server install. I've done it with win2K8 no problems, but this 2k3 install is failing every time.

• We have no SW Firewall behind our office HW firewall, admin says its not req'd

  I've recently changed jobs and I've been set up with a new workstation. On all previous places where I've been working they've had some sort of local firewall installed on each and every workstation - but here I've been told not to activate it because it is not necessary since we're already behind a HW Firewall. To me this seem a bit naïve, but I cannot emphasise it. I always thought a local firewall was good practice, ie. if something managed to come through the hw firewall there might be a slight chance other computers on the lan would block the internal threath. We got free access to internet and we got a virus checker installed.

• Outstanding Silverlight User Group Meeting last night

  We had a great Silverlight User Group Meeting in Phoenix last night! Before I go any farther I want to say thanks again to David Silverlight and Kim Schmidt for coming to talk to us! And not to forget Victor Gaudioso over the wire :) David, Kim, and Victor talked to us about the Silverlight User Group Starter Kit they are working on with an extended stellar list of talented developers. Don't bypass looking at this by thinking it's only for a User Group... this is a solid community-supported full-up application using MVVM and Ria Services that you could take and modify for your own use. Take a look at the list of developers. Chances are you know some of them... send them an email of thanks for all the hard work over the last year! David and Kim discussed the architecture and code, demonstrating features as they went. Then Victor came in through the application itself on a high-intensity live webcast from his home in California. The audience of about 15 seemed focused and interested which says a lot about the subject and presentation. Tim Heuer came bearing some gifts (swag) ... a hard-copy of Josh Smith's Advanced MVVM , and couple cheaply upgradeable copies of VS2008 Pro that were snatched up very quickly. We also gave away a few copies of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, some Arc mice, and some Office 2007 disks... so I don't think anyone left empty-handed. Personal thanks from me go out to Mike Palermo and Tim Heuer for the surprise they had waiting for me that's been over Twitter, and to Victor for only mentioning it at least 3 times in a 5-minute webcast. Thanks for a great evening, and I look forward to seeing all of you in a couple weeks at MIX10!

• Nagios Terminal Services check?

  Most of our servers are licensed for 2 concurrent remote desktop sessions. This is fine, so long as everyone does their administrative task and logs off, but some people accidentally close sessions (disconnect but remain logged in) instead. I know that you can force someone off with the right Admin tools, but it's a bit ugly and may hurt productivity or maybe even the server(?). I was thinking that a nightly Nagios check of remote sessions available nagging people would help enforce build discipline on the subject. Can anyone recommend a service check that can monitor terminal service availability?

• Distinction between Cloud Servers and VPS

  What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider? From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps? • Can't upgrade Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

  So today was RTM of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials released. I immediately tried to do an in-place upgrade of an existing RTM 2012 Essentials to RTM 2012 R2 Essentials, but get: Windows Server 2012 Essentials cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. This seems a bit odd, is this really the case? I can't find anything in the official documentation stating that this upgrade isn't possible.

• Dual monitors through 1 HDMI port

  I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop connected to a 24" HP monitor (w2448hc). Im thinking on getting a second one, however am wondering what i need for the setup (hardware wise). Also I was wondering it there is any down side to it, or something i should be aware of. For example, image quality loss, GPU overloading, or anything important I should know. More than anything Im interested in your advice. Also the monitors do have built in speakers (HDMI sound output), is the sound going to be reproduced by only one monitor or both? • Massive Network Upgrade

  I find myself tasked with organizing an upgrade of our entire Active Directory from server 2003 to 2008. We run a few AD dependant services such as Exchange 2007 SQL Server 2008 SharePoint 2007 All of which we are looking to bring up to date as well with their most recent versions. The original AD was a little bit of a mess (the exchange upgrade from 2003 left some stuff in the AD database that I make references to servers that no longer exist for example). Here is what I want to accomplish Migrate the domain from our 2003 to a NEW clean 2008r2 domain Upgrade from Sharepoint 2007 to 2010 Upgrade Exchange from 2007 to 2010 My question is, in what order do we do things? Can I do a domain upgrade and simply migrate exchange after? On their own, these objectives are complicated enough, orchestrating them in our company while minimizing downtime is making my head spin. I have done a lot of the research on how to do them individually but I am having trouble figuring out how to do them all in concert.

• Etch a Circuit Board using a Simple Homemade Mixture

  If you’ve been dabbling in DIY electronics projects but you’re not so excited about keeping strong acids around to etch your circuit boards, this simple DIY recipe uses common household chemicals in lieu of strong acid. Electronics hobbyist Stephen Hobley wanted to see if he could create an etching solution that wasn’t as dangerous and noxious smelling at traditional muriatic acid solutions. By combining regular white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and table salt, he created a homemade etching solution from ingredients safe enough to store in your pantry. The only downside to his recipe is that, compared to traditional etching solutions, the process takes a little bit longer so you’ll have to leave your board in the solution longer. Not a bad trade off for the ability to skip using any oops-I-burned-my-skin-off acids. • What do you do with coder's block?

  Lately it has been a bit rough. I basically know all the things I need and all the avenues to get there for work. There's been no real issue of a problem with too high complexity, and performance is good. Still, after three major projects this year, my mind is behaving a little strange. It's like I'm used to working in O(1+log(N-neatTricks)) but for some reason it processes in O(N^2)! I've experienced a sort of burnout after long deadlines and drudging projects before, but when it turns into a longer experience, I haven't found the usual suspects to be helpful. Take more walks Work on other code Overdesign everything until I feel intensely driven to just make it (sorta works) How can a programmer recoup from the specific hole in your head programming leaves after being mentally ransacked by these bloody corporations and their fancy money? Hopefully some of you have some better ideas, because I could really use another round of being looted and pillaged.I've often wondered if there are special puzzles or some kind of activity that would de-stress the tangled balance of left and right braininess programmers often deal with. Do any special techniques, activities, anything seem to help with the developer's mindset especially?

• Alice In Wonderland: Good, but not Great

  We went to see Alice In Wonderland today. We both like Tim Burton a lot (the stranger the better) and like Johnny Depp very well also. After seeing all the previews and such, we were fired up to see this film. Honestly, I thought it was good but not great. I was prepared to be wow-ed, but I wasn't. Perhaps I expected too much. I did like it, but I'll not own it nor would I expect to see it again...unless someone I know decides they want to see it. I was about to say something to reassure you that I wasn't going to provide any spoilers but two things occurred to me: one, I never give spoilers and two, why worry about spoilers for a film that so closely follows a book? My comments about the film are hard to describe, but the basic gist is that it doesn't really feel like it..."works" to me. I can't get any more specific than that, much as I'd like to do so. Something about it seems sort of disjointed and not in that Alice way you'd expect. My only specific comment is that I didn't like the actor who plays Alice very well. She was very flat and just didn't sell he character to me. She seemed a bit, well, plastic. Depp was as good as you'd expect him to be, I am happy to say. Obviously Lewis Carroll couldn't have imagined this made into film, but I can't help thinking that he'd see this and say that Depp was the perfect Mad Hatter. So, I'd definitely recommend seeing it (we saw it in 3D which was cool, but not really necessary) at least once, but don't be surprised if you're kinda meh afterwards.

• OS choice between: Debian, gNewSense, and OpenSolaris

  I am planning to migrate from Mac OS X and Windows to either a Unix or Linux distribution, i.e. I am a Linux/Unix beginner. Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? What are simple IDEs for Debian and gNewSense?

• Running out of LowMem with Ubuntu PAE Kernel and 32GB of RAM

  I'm running a Java data import process on a 32-bit Ubuntu 10 PAE kernel machine. After running the process for a while, the oom-killer zaps my Java process. After some Googling and digging through docs, it looks like the system is running out of LowMem. I started the process for the third time and am watching free -lm show me Low: 464 386 77 with the free value (77MB) slowly decreasing. Why am I running out of lowmem and how do I increase it? • Netbook performance - 1.33 GHz vs 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom

  All new 11" netbooks seem to carry 1.33 GHz Atom Z520 CPU instead of 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom N270/N280. The screen resolution of 11" netbooks make them very appealing, but I'm a bit concerned about their performance as they carry a slower CPU than the 1.6GHz Atom, which isn't a great performer in the first place. Is there any significant difference in performance between 1.33 GHz and 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom processors in day to day usage? Are any of those fast enough to decode 720p x264 video? (When paired with typical Intel GMA platform and software decoder like ffdshow/CoreAVC of course, not with Nvidia Ion platform)

  Hi, I rather foolishly undertook to install a control panel on a Linode. I opted to use CentOs 5.5 (either ordinary or 64 bit) but I am like a monkey playing a reward game... I have some idea of what I am doing, but not enough.... In certain areas I am hopeless....do I install Webmin/virtualmin, or ISP Config..... ISP Config 2 or 3? I would employ someone to help, but how do i find the right person? Where can i learn the ropes on all this? There seems to be no systematic training, and even when I try to research college courses in the UK, I am none the wiser as to where I could go to learn how to run a Linux server..... Has anyone any pointers? Right now I am looking at th esecurity aspects of the server.....rkhunter , denyhosts etc... Any advice on installing and maintaining these things? Cheers marcus

  I am a graphic designer (among other things) and I'm used to doing magazine advertisements, brochures, posters and that sort of thing. Recently I was approached by a photographer who wants a graphic designer to produce wedding albums for him. I have already done a couple for him but I'm finding it hard to work by just arranging my layouts in Photoshop alone. It's very time consuming, but quite repetitive - especially when you're dealing with common page layouts. I know a lot of photographers use album design software to speed up the process a bit.   Recently flipped to Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell 4300 (Intel). Getting IP address and no issues (ping/surf) but Wireshark unable to detect eth0 interface. I see references in forums to blacklist tulip but looks like I am running dmfe. Not sure if the blacklist is required and where to go from here. Maybe Driver update? • Dolby Digital Live (DDL) on Asus Rampage II Gene (Creative X-Fi Extreme)

  Hi there, I have an Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard which has X-Fi extreme built in. I can get it to work with Windows 7 ok using the Creative drivers, however when I try and install the DDL/DTS add on pack from Creative I get the error message: "There are no supported audio device available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now" I don't understand it because I have the Creative software installed ok and supporting the sound without any problems. In Device manager the audio device comes up as 'High definition audio device' and uses driver: 6.1.7600.16385 from Microsoft. I tried using the Creative drivers which show up as 'soundmax HD audio' however these do not allow any of the Creative products to run properly. Please can anyone offer any help? • Thunderbird compact is taking forever

  One day I came in to work and found that our development server - a Ubuntu box had a full hard disk. I did a bit of investigation using the du command and it seems like mozilla thunderbird is the major culprit. One of the mailboxes used to get a lot of spam so I guess this accounts for the 667GB. I opened up Thunderbird to see how much space the inbox actually takes up and it turns out to be approximately 500MB - over 1000 times less than the stuff that has not been compacted over the years. So i right clicked on the inbox directory in the tree on the left of Thunderbird and selected 'compact'. I left it for about 12hours but even after that it still said 'compacting folder' on the status bar. I don't use Thunderbird on this PC - it belonged to a colleague who has left the company, however I do occasionally need to look through the inbox for references to the project I am working on, so deleting all traces of Thunderbird is not an option. My question is - is there any way I can monitor the progress of Thunderbird's compacting function? I would really like to know how long it is going to take. Also is there any way I can speed up the compacting process?
