  Use case: When I install Ubuntu on another computer, I need to: install all the packages that I use; make some config changes; svn checkout some projects; git clone some projects; setup .ssh/config; download a custom Eclipse build; download some additional Eclipse plugins; make many other tweaks. So, I want to run a script, like sudo install-everything-needed, that would execute these predefined actions. Is there any package that provides the backbone for such system?

• Thoughts on Development using Virtual Machines

  I'll be working as a development lead for a startup and I've suggested that we use VMs for development. I'm not talking about each developer having a desktop with VMs for testing/development, I mean having a server rack where all VMs are managed and have the developers work from a microPC (ChromeOS anyone?) locally, or even remotely from their home computer. To me, the benefits are the fact that it's extremely scalable, cheaper in the long run, easier to manage and that we utilize the hardware its maximum potential. As for cons, I can't think of any particular showstoppers other than we'll need someone to setup/maintain said setup. I was hoping that some of you might of had a similar setup at your place of employment and be able to weight in with your opinions. Thanks.

When this Linux Distribution came out, I immediately went to the website and found out that Pear Linux is actually Mac OSX with a pear. I was going to download it and install Pear Linux as a triple-boot on my computer (Windows and Ubuntu installed). Then I remembered that Pear Linux is Ubuntu based. So I thought of a better Idea of installing only the Comice OS Shell in Ubuntu(the Desktop environment of Pear Linux), so that I can select that in the login screen. Is that possible? • How can I break out of ssh when it locks?

  Hi, I frequently ssh into my box at home from school, but usually when I change classes and my computer suspends, the pipe will be broken. However, ssh simply locks up - ^c, ^z and ^d have no effect. It's annoying to have to restart my terminal, and even more annoying to have to close and re-create a new screen window. So my question, is there an easy way to make ssh die properly (i.e. when the pipe fails "normally" it will exit with a message about a broken pipe)? Or do I have to figure out what the PID is and manually kill it? Thanks!

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

  While travelling I met a mathematician who was sitting near me. In a discussion he said: "...there is nothing like engineering in IT or rather programming". A true engineering is what Architecture is, what Electrical and Mechanical is. It made me think and I was puzzled. A percent of my brain agreed also because in Indian Army, there is no subject like Computer Engineering in the Engineering Corps. They don't consider programming as engineering. This is what I heard few years back, I don't know what Indian Army thinks now. What are your views?

• Typing tutor games with good playablity

  Are there any linux typing tutor games which are enjoyable games in their own right? I'm a computer professional, but have never learned to type properly. I also don't want my kids to pick up my bad habits! The kids are okay with TuxTyping, for a time. Something like Typing of the Dead sounds great, but is Windows only, and as far as I can tell one of a kind. I also don't want the young'uns hooked on first person shooters just yet. So are there any quality typing games for a range of ages?

Since I live in Iran there are no counselor or any professionals out there to help me, so I decided to ask here. I started with Visual Basic and after 1 year I started to learn HTML , CSS , Javascript and JQuery. And for the past 6 months I've been learning PHP,and I have a basic understanding of OOP. I want to move to America to continue my studies and I was wondering which programming language helps me the most to get there? Should I learn C++ or JAVA or should I study Computer Science and Math? also since We are not in a good place financially, I want a programming language that helps me in college and lets me make some money? • Game Engines with real time lighting

  I am studying computer graphics since 3 semesters and we just started with OpenGL. I really enjoy it and want to create my own little engine for learning purposes. I already read tons of different forum posts and saw the following engines. Panda3d, Ogre3d, NeoAxis, Irrlicht and Horde3d(graphics only). Now I don't want to use something like Unity or CryEngine because I want to start more low level. Which of those engines is suited for real-time rendering? Something that CryEngine offers - no baked lightmaps. Or at least gives me the option to add a real-time renderer?

• Nautilus is really slow

  Nautilus used to be lightning fast.Now it's dead slow. I have tried upgrading the video card but that does not seem to be the problem. Also I found that there was a problem with the Dropbox uninstall, finally I replace it with pcmanfm which appears to be much faster but the down side is that I no longer have the gwibber social client and a lot of stuff don't work like they use to. Also I completely removed nautilus and couldn't even login to ubuntu to install again nautilus.How can I remove or repair nautilus, and use pcmanfm instead? I have a dell inspiron 1440 3gb ram / disk 300gb / Additionally, why does nautilus run fast when I run it as root? There are no USB devices attached to my computer. Thanks in advance

  Possible Duplicate: should i concentrate on logical and puzzles part in programming, i want to be a web (flex)developer? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. Does a web developer need strong fundamentals when it comes to things such as complex algorithms and high end coding?

• 12.10 x64 - RTL8188CE - Intermittent/Slow Internet Connection

  I have to reset my internet connection often to get it to work. When it does work, it's definitely slower than when I'm on my Windows installation. My computer uses an RTL8188CE wireless card from Realtek. I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.10. Power management is not on. I've read on other sites that some people fixed the issue pertaining to this wireless card by downloading and installing the drivers from the Realtek site, but it seems as if that only helped people with 32-bit installations. Anyone have any luck with this specific wireless card?

• Launch a real install of Ubuntu already on another hard-drive in Windows 7 like a VM

  I'm not too familiar with VMs and the like so this may not even be possible. Here is what I have: A real, full install of Windows 7 on hard drive A. A real, full install of Ubuntu 10.04 on hard drive B. Grub allowing me to select what I want to launch when I start up my computer. It would be Amazing if I could do one of two things. Within Windows 7, launch my real install of ubuntu as if it were a VM. That means i would get all the installed software, all of the files, and all of the settings. Launch a VM copy of ubuntu 10.04 but some how make it use all of the installed software and settings from my real copy. Thanks!

• How do I change the language via a terminal?

  Using system settings I changed my language to Arabic and deleted the English language from the settings. Then the computer lagged and it logged out - now I can't log back in because the login is in Arabic. So is there a way to default my language via terminal, default the login password language, or login via terminal which is still in English. I only have access to guest and a terminal. I changed the pasword to something that could be translated into arabic http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword - then loged in and used system settings to default.

• I can't get Ubuntu installation to start

  I have a computer with the following configuration: AZUS Sabertooth Motherboard Intel I5 2500 CPU Windows 7 installed I'm trying to install linux. I first attempted to install pin guy. I burned the ISO, booted from it, got the initial menu; attempting to either run the live version from DVD, or install to system. However the process stops at a blank screen with the blinking cursor in left corner. So I downloaded Ubuntu and got the same results. Then I tried wubi and ended up in the same position. EDIT: UEFI might be part of the problem? • Can't decide between Java or Python for college [on hold]

  I'm returning to college in about a month for Computer Science. My problem is, I have been programming on the web since I left (4 years ago), using PHP, ASP.NET, and JavaScript. I want to bone up on a more general purpose language that is cross platform before I begin. • Hard drive and DVD drive are not being detected by the BIOS

  My hard drive and DVD drive are not being detected by the BIOS when I go in to the boot option menu by pressing F12. When I put the hard drive in a different computer it's being detected. I am assuming it's either the mother board or the BIOS. Since the HDD is not being detected I have installed Ubuntu on a flash drive, but even that has become so slow, that it takes around 5 minutes for it to boot. I want to flash the BIOS before I think of changing the motherboard. I have downloaded the updated file and it has a flash.bat and a afudos.exe. I have to run the .bat file. I downloaded the Dos in a box and went to the DOS directory where the .bat file is and tried to run it, but it gives me the error message "This program cannot run under this operating system" Any help would be appreciated

• Compiz stop working

  I'm on a laptop sony vaio, vng-nw330f with ubuntu 11.10. One day I used my computer normally, I shutdown and the other day when I turn on it again, all was different. Compiz effects is not working at all, it doesn't matter what plugin (from ccsm) i enable or disable, nothings happens, nothings changes. I tried next commands: unity --reset unity --reset-icons sudo rm -rf .config .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private .compiz .icons .fonts .nautilus .themes .qt .local (from my home directory) gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1 I try reinstalling compiz (I remove compiz from software center and installed it again). I have just a couple of weeks using ubuntu, I'm not sure if exist a desktop call it unity 3d, but I think that it's missing. I want the graphics interface of ubuntu 11.10 by default.

  I am currently writing a sports strategy management game (cricket) in PHP, with a MYSQL database, and I have come across one stumbling block - how do I update games where neither player is online? Cricket is a game played between two players, and when they (or one of them) is online then everything is fine; but what if neither player is online? This occurs when championship games are played, and these games need to happen at certain times for game reasons. At the moment I have a private web page that updates every 5 seconds, and each time it loads all games are updated; but then I have the problem that when my private web page stops (for example my computer crashes or my web browser plays up) the game stops updating! Any suggestions?

  It suddenly struck me today that I have never developed any large application or worked with a team of programmers, and so am missing out a lot - both in terms of technical knowledge and the social-fun part of it. And I would like to rectify that - an idea is to start an open source group by training college students (for no charge) and developing some open source application with them.
