• Partitioning Strategies for P6 Reporting Database

  Prior to P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1 range partitioning was used. This was applied only to the history tables. The ranges were defined during installation and additional ranges would need to be added once your date range entered the final defined range. As of P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1, interval partitioning was implemented. Interval partitioning was applied to the existing History table as well as Slowly Changing Dimension tables. One of the major advantages of interval partitioning is there is no more manual addition of ranges. The interval partitioning will automatically create partitions for the defined interval when data is inserted into the table and it exceeds the existing partitions. In 3.2 sp1 there are steps on how to update your partitioning. For all versions after 3.2 sp1 interval partitioning is the only partitioning option used. When upgrading it is important to be aware of these changes. • Tip: Keeping the ADF Mobile PDF Guide up to date

  This is a little tip for customers using Oracle's ADF Mobile. If you're like me, it's possible you don't rely on the online HTML version of the Mobile Developer's Guide for ADF, but rather download a PDF version of the file to use locally (look to the "PDF" link to the top right of the guide).  For me the convenience of the PDF is it's faster, I can search the whole document easily, I can split read the document across two pages on my home monitor, if I lose my internet connection the document is still available, and it's easy to read on my iPad (especially on long haul flights to the US across the Pacific where there is no internet connection!). The trigger point for me to download the Oracle PDF documentation has always been on a new point release of JDeveloper.  However in the case of ADF Mobile, as an extension to JDeveloper it is releasing at a much faster and independent schedule to JDeveloper and this includes updates to the documentation. As such the 11.1.2.4.0 ADF Mobile PDF guide you have locally might be out of date and you should take the opportunity to download the latest version.  This is also particularly important for ADF Mobile as not only are many new features being added for each release and included in the new documentation, but the guide is under rapid improvement to clarify much of what has been written to date.  Our documentation teams are super responsive to suggestions on how to improve the guides and this often shows per point release. How do you tell you've the latest guide? Look to the document part number which right now is "E24475-03".  This is a unique ID per release for the document, the first part being the document number, and the part after the dash the revision number.  If the website document number has a higher revision number, time to download a new up to date PDF. • Accessing Secure Web Services from ADF Mobile

  Most of the enterprise Web services you'll access are going to be secured - meaning they'll require you to pass a user/password in order to get to their data.  If you never created a secured Web service, it's simple in JDeveloper! For the below video I just right clicked on a Java class that I exposed as a Web service, and chose  "Web Service Properties" and then checked the "oracle/wss_username_token_service_policy" box from the list of options (that's the option supported by ADF Mobile right now): In the demo below we are going to use a "remote" login server that does the authentication of the user/pass.The easiest way to "create" a remote login server is to create a "regular" web ADF application, secure it, and deploy it on a server. The secured ADF application can just require ADF Authentication with a simple HTTP Basic Authentication - basically the next two images in the Application->Secure->Configure ADF Security menu wizard. ok - so now you have a secured ADF application - deploy it on a server and get the URL for that application.  From this point on you'll see the process in the video which deals with the configuration of your ADF Mobile app. First you'll need to enable security for your ADF mobile application, so it will prompt users to provide a user/pass combination. You'll also need to configure security on specific features. And you can have them use remote login pointing to your regular secured ADF application. Next define your Web service data control. Right click on the web service data control to "define Web Service Security". You'll also need to define the adfCredentialStoreKey property for the Web Service data control in the connections.xml file. This should be it. • How can I deal with a difficult developer that is holding back the project? [migrated]

  Our entire project is being held up because of one piece which is being handled by a single developer. When we did finally got the latest version of his code and started reviewing it, we found the code was horrendous! Its a relatively simply workflow, however the code is so complex that it's very difficult to step through and review/debug. The developer responsible has a hard time accepting any kind of criticism, and feels he is more knowledgeable than others members of the team. It's difficult to even talk to him about his development work because it turns into "I know what I'm talking about and you're just wrong!" type of conversation. A request has already been put in to replace this developer but management is not doing anything. This is probably because devs are in short supply where we are, and this is a corporation has a lot of office drama. I'm just one of the developers, not the project manager, however I really want to see this project succeed. What can I do in this sort of situation to try and keep the project on track?

• Best way: restructure an existing Team Foundation Server (TFS) solution

  In my department we are developing several smaller AddOns for some unified communication server. For versioning and distributed development we use a Team Foundation Server 2012. But: there is only one large TFS solution for all of our applications and libraries: Main Solution Applications App 1 App 2 App 3 Externals Libraries Lib 1 Lib 2 Tools The "Application" path contains all main applications. Those are not depending on each other, but they depend on the Libraries and Externals projects. The "Externals" path contains some external DLLs referenced in our Applications and Libraries. The Libraries path contains commonly used libs (UI templates, Helper classes, etc.). They do not depend on each other and they are referenced in the Libraries and the Tools projects. The Tools path contains some helper programs like setup helpers, update web services, etc. Now, there's some major points why I'd like to change this structure: We can't use server builds. It's uncomfortable to manage TFS scrum management with sprints, impediments, etc. with a solution structure like that. Every developer always has access to all projects in the solution. A complete build lasts too long if one accidentally hits [F6] in Visual Studio... What would you change in this solution? How would you break those projects into smaller Solutions, how should those solutions be structured. My first approach would be, to create one TFS project for each Application, Library and Tool. But how can I ensure that e.g. App 2 always contains the newest version of Lib 1? Do I have to monitor changes on Lib 1 and update App 2 manually as soon as the Lib changes? Or can I somehow force Visual Studio to always use the newest version of an external project somehow?

• No MAU required on a T4

  Cryptic background One of the powerful features of the T-series servers is its hardware crypto acceleration, which dramatically speeds up the compute intensive algorithms needed to encrypt and decrypt data. Previously, administrators setting up logical domains on older T-series servers had to explicitly assign crypto resources (called "MAU" for historical reasons from the T1 chip that had "modular arithmetic units") to domains that had a significant crypto workload (say, an SSL based web server). This could be an administrative burden, as you had to choose which domains got the crypto units, and issue the appropriate ldm set-mau N mydomain commands. The T4 changes things The T4 is fast. Really fast. Its clock rate and out-of-order (OOO) execution that provides the single-thread performance that T-series machines previously did not have. If you have any preconceptions about T-series performance, or SPARC in general, based on the older servers (which, it must be said, were absolutely outstanding for multi-threaded applications), those assumptions are now obsolete. The T4 provides outstanding. performance for all kinds of workload, as illustrated at https://blogs.oracle.com/bestperf. While we all focused on this (did I mention the T4 is fast?), another feature of the T4 went largely unnoticed: The T4 servers have crypto acceleration "just built in" so administrators no longer have to assign crypto accelerator units to domains - it "just happens". This is way way better since you have crypto everywhere by default without having to manage it like a discrete and limited resource. It's a feature of the processor, like doing an integer add. With T4, there is no management necessary, you just have HW crypto everywhere all the time seamlessly. This change hasn't been widely advertised, and some administrators have wondered why there were unable to assign a MAU to a domain as they did with T2 and T3 machines. The answer is that there is no longer any separate MAU, so you don't have to take any action at all - just leave the default of 0. Summary Besides being much faster than its predecessors, the T4 also integrates hardware crypto acceleration so its seamlessly available to applications, whether domains are being used or not. Administrators no longer have to control how they are allocated - it "just happens"

• Have you Been Missing the 'About This Record' Functionality on the Customer Form...?

  Do you have fond memories of the 'Help -> About This Record'  functionality that used to be available in the old Customer form - when it was a form, and not a java html screen?  Back in Release 11i, we had the ability to identify when the customer record had last been updated and by whom.  When some forms were replaced by Java HTML screens, you could identify some of this information via the 'About this Page' hyperlink at the bottom left hand corner of the HTML page.  You could enable this by enabling the FND: Diagnostics profile option, but many customers found this had an adverse effect on performance and additionally was not user-friendly.   Our customers tell us that this feature was widely used to identify owner/update information in many business processes, including auditing, customer entry/update, research and testing.  There have been various efforts to revert this feature by customising java pages, but this was not fully successful in some cases.  Oracle Support is happy to announce that this functionality has now been included in the Customer screens in Release 12.2 onwards.   You will be able to query the record history at customer level, at site level, at site address levels and for all tabs relating to the customer. Simply click on the 'Record History' icon, available in the Record History column on a summary screen, or via the same icon on the individual detail screen to display the following information: Last Updated Date: Last Updated By Creation Date Created By Last Update Login

  There's a project I'm trying to start for Indie Game Development; specifically, it's going to be a social networking website that lets developers meet through (It's a secret). One of the key components is showing what skills members have. Question: I need to know what MAJOR game development roles are not represented in the following list, keeping in mind that many specialist roles are being condensed into more broad, generalist roles: Art Animator (Characters, creatures, props, etc.) Concept Artist (2D scenes, environments, props, silhouettes, etc.) Technical Artist (UI artists, typefaces, graphic designers, etc.) 3D Artist (Modeling, rigging, texture, lighting, etc.) Audio Composer (Scores, music, etc.) Sound Engineer (SFX, mood setting, audio implementation, etc.) Voice (Dialog, acting, etc.) Design Creative Director (Initial direction, team management, communications, etc.) Gameplay Designer (Systems, mechanics, control mapping, etc.) World Designer (Level design, aesthetics, game progression, events, etc.) Writer (Story, mythos, dialog, flavor text, etc.) Programming Engine Programming (Engine creation, scripting, physics, etc.) Graphics Engineer (Sprites, lighting, GUI, etc.) Network Engineer (LAN, multiplayer, server support, etc.) Technical Director (I don't know what a technical director would even do.) Post Script: I have an art background, so i'm not familiar with what the others behind game creation actually do. • Is using SVN for development and CM a bad practice?

  I have a bit of experience with SVN as a pure programmer/developer. Within my company, however, we use SVN as our configuration management tool. I thought using SVN for development at the same time was OK since we could use branches and the trunk for dev, and tags for releases. To me, the tags were the CM part, and the branches/trunk were the dev part. Recently a person, who develops high level code (but outside of the "pure SW" group) mentioned that the existing philosophy (mixing SVN for dev and CM) was wrong... in his opinion. His reasoning is that he thinks the company's CM tool should always link to run-able SW (so branches would break this rule). He also mentioned that a CM tool shouldn't be a backup utility for daily or incremental commits. Finally, he doesn't like the idea of having to jump from revision 143 to 89 in order to get a working copy... and further that CM tools shouldn't allow reversion to a broken state. In general he wants to separate the CM and back-up/dev utilties that SVN offers. Honestly, I am new and the person with this perspective is one of seniority, experience, and success, so I want to field this dilemma with the stackoverflow userbase to see if his approach has merit. My question: Should SVN be purely used for development, and another tool for CM (or vice versa)? Why? If so, what tools would you suggest for this combo? Or do you think that integrating both CM and dev into SVN is the best approach? Why? Thanks.

• What to do as a new team lead on a project with maintainability problems?

  I have just been put in charge of a code project with maintainability problems. What things can I do to get the project on a stable footing? I find myself in a place where we are working with a very large multi-tiered .NET system that is missing a lot of the important things such as unit tests, IOC, MEF, too many static classes, pure datasets etc. I'm only 24 but I've been here for almost three years (this app has been in development for 5) and mostly due to time constraints we've been just adding in more crap to fit the other crap. After doing a number of projects in my free time I have begun to understand just how important all those concepts are. Also due to employee shifting I find myself to now be the team lead on this project and I really want to come up with some smart ways to improve this app. Ways where the value can be explained to management. I have ideas of what I would like to do but they all seem so overwhelming without much upfront gain. Any stories of how people have or would have dealt with this would be a very interesting read.   We're at the end of a project, but we continue to run into issues because of a single piece of the project. This piece is handled by a specific developer. Finally, we grabbed latest and started reviewing it. It's just horrendous code! Trying to step through it was difficult and it's a relatively simple workflow. The point of this question is, how to deal with this situation. The developer has a hard time accepting criticism (constructive or otherwise) and feels he is more knowledgeable than others on the team who are, well, highly decorated, experienced and accomplished developers. It's difficult to even get into a topic about development because it turns into "I know what I'm talking about and you're just wrong!" type of conversation. A request has already been put in to replace this developer but it is a hard sell since devs are in short supply where we are and this is a corporation with a LOT of political bs. Management has been notified a few times but nothing is happening.

• Transformation?

  I started working at Oracle in 1997.  Since then, we (and most everyone) have been talking about transforming finance operations....but what does that mean exactly?  From my perspective, I thought it meant eliminate waste and menial tasks and giving your finance team more time to work on more strategic things.  That seems logical and simplistic, but how much progress have finance teams (and their IT departments) really made over the past fifteen years? I have yet to talk to a customer that doesn't have one amusing task that makes me chuckle.  Sometimes they still print hard copies of transactions to "file," or sometimes they print 700 pages of data to "analyze," or sometimes they cut and paste from one or more reports into a spreadsheet.  Upon hearing these things, my first question is always, "Why do you do that?" to which their response is rarely the same.    Sometimes it's related to trust (both the employee and the system).  Sometimes, it's habit-based.  And sometimes it is just impossible to accomplish the end result without some manual effort. I will say that I used to print nearly everything that I needed to review.  Partly, because I liked having the ability to scribble notes on the paper, and partly, because it was uncomfortable to read online.  However, I have changed. Rarely do I print anything anymore.  It's easier for me to read and notate online, and well, I guess I've just changed my habits. So where do you think our resistance to change comes from?  Is it truly deficits in our systems, or is it our own personal resistance to change?  What's your most annoying & untransformed task?

• Dynamic Monitoring Service (DMS) Configuration Dumping and CPU Utilization

  There was recently a report of CPU spikes on a system that were occuring at precise 3 hour intervals. Research revealed that the spikes were the result of the Dynamic Monitoring Service generating a metrics dump and writing it under the server 'logs' folder for every WLS server in the domain. This blog provides some information on what this is for and how to control it. The Dynamic Monitoring Service is a facility in FMw (JRF to be more precise) that collects runtime data on the components deployed to WebLogic. Each component is responsible for how much or how little they use the service and SOA collects a fair amount of information. To view what is collected on any running server you can use the following URL, http://host:port/dms/Spy and login with admin credentials. DMS is essentially always running and collecting this information in the runtime and to protect against loss of this data it also runs automatic backups, by default at the 3 hour interval mentioned above. Most of the management options for DMS are exposed through WLST but these settings are not so we must open the dms_config.xml file which can be found in DOMAIN_HOME/config/fmwconfig/servers/<server_name>/dms_config.xml. The contents are fairly short and at the bottom you will find the following entry: <dumpConfiguration>     <dump intervalSeconds="10800" maxSizeMBytes="75" enabled="true"/> </dumpConfiguration> The interval of 10800 seconds corresponds to the 3 hours and the maximum size is 75MB. The file is written as an archive to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server_name>/logs/metrics. This archive contains the dump in XML format. You can disable the dumps all together by simply setting the 'enabled' value to 'false' or of course you could modify the other parameters to suit your needs. Disabling the dumps will NOT impact DMS collections or display at runtime. It will only eliminate these periodic backups.

• Should developers do their own software releases (if there is a prod support team in place)?

  I know there are going to always be differences depending on the particular size, staff etc, but i wanted to get feedback in general around: In an environment where you have a production support team doing first line support and release management, is it better to simply have developers manage their own releases instead? In this case, its internal software at an insurance company but the question should be valid at any company, size, etc I think. Currently, we have our production team do releases but there is an argument that its inefficient and that if you allowed developers the ability to do it, they will focus more on making it simple and efficient and avoid basically passing on scripts, etc to run to another team. The counter argument is that if you don't have a check and balance, you could get a software team (or an individual) that doesn't a very hacky job about getting their software out there (making on the fly changes, not documenting the process, etc) and that by forcing the prod support team to do the actual release, it enforces consistency and proper checks and balances. I know this is not a black or white issue but I wanted to see what folks thought on this so the discipline and consistency is there but without the feeling that an inefficient process is in place.
