  I have a datagrid and I'm writing a method to search through it to find some text. Practically all of my columns use a DataTemplateSelector, so in my search, I need to be able to take a DataTemplate, apply it to a ContentControl, and then find a TextBlock to get the text to see if it matches my search criteria. I'm trying the following but it's not seeming to produce any results. • How to give weight to full matches over partial matches (PostgreSQL)

  I've got a query that takes an input searches for the closet match in zipcode/region/city/metrocode in a location table containing a few tens of thousands of entries (should be nearly every city in the US). The query I'm using is: select metrocode, region, postalcode, region_full, city from dv_location where ( region ilike '%Chicago%' or postalcode ilike '%Chicago%' or city ilike '%Chicago%' or region_full ilike'%Chicago%' ) and metrocode is not null Odd thing is, the results set I'm getting back looks like this: metrocode;region;postalcode;region_full;city 862;CA;95712;California;Chicago Park 862;CA;95712;California;Chicago Park 602;IL;60611;Illinois;Chicago 602;IL;60610;Illinois;Chicago What am I doing wrong? My thinking is that Chicago would have greater weight than Chicago Park since Chicago is an exact match to the term (even though I'm asking for a wildcard match on the term).

  Hello, I have a grep expression using cygwin grep on Win. grep -a "\\,,/\|\\m/\|\\m/\\>\.</\\m/\|:u" all_fbs.txt > rockon_fbs.txt Once I identify the emoticon class, however, I want to strip them out of the data. However, the same regexp above within a sed results in a syntax error (yes, I realize I could use /d instead of //g, but this doesn't make a difference, I still get the error.) sed "s/\(\\,,/\|\\m/\|\\m/\\>\.</\\m/\|:u\)*//g" The full line is: grep -a "\\,,/\|\\m/\|\\m/\\>\.</\\m/\|:u" all_fbs.txt | sed "s/\(\\,,/\|\\m/\|\\m/\\>\.</\\m/\|:u\)*//g" | sed "s/^/ROCKON\t/" > rockon_fbs.txt The result is: sed: -e expression #1, char 14: unknown option to `s' I know it's coming from the sed regexp I'm asking about it b/c if I remove that portion of the full line, then I get no error (but, of course, the emoticons are not filtered out). But by modifying the strtok to the following, tmp=strtok(NULL, "ay"); The output becomes Madd. So how does strtok exactly work? I have this question because I expected strtok to take each and every character that is in the delimiter string to be taken as a delimiter. But in certain cases it is doing that way but in few cases, it is giving unexpected results. Could anyone help me understand this?

• Entity Framework associations killing performance

  Here is the performance test i am looking at. I have 8 different entities that are table per type. Some of the entities contain over 100 thousand rows. This particular application does several recursive calculations on the client so I think it may be best to preload the data instead of lazy loading. If there are no associations I can load the entire database in about 3 seconds. As I add associations in any way the performance starts to drastically decline. I am loading all the data the same way (just calling toList() on the entity attached to the context). I ran the test with edmx generated classes and self tracking entities and had similar results. I am sure if I were to try and deal with the associations myself, similar to how I would in a dataset, the performance problem would go away. On the other hand I am pretty sure this is not how the entity framework was intended to being used. Any thoughts or ideas?

  I have a method which can be written pretty neatly through method chaining: return viewer.ServerReport.GetParameters() .Single(p => p.Name == Convention.Ssrs.RegionParamName) .ValidValues .Select(v => v.Value); However I'd like to be able to do some checks at each point as I wish to provide helpful diagnostics information if any of the chained methods returns unexpected results. To achieve this, I need to break up all my chaining and follow each call with an if block. It makes the code a lot less readable. Ideally I'd like to be able to weave in some chained method calls which would allow me to handle unexpected outcomes at each point (e.g. throw a meaningful exception such as new ConventionException("The report contains no parameter") if the first method returns an empty collection). Can anyone suggest a simple way to achieve such a thing?

• iphone: custom UITableViewCell taller than the default cell view.

  Hello, I'm creating an application that consists of a ListView with 5 rows: - 1st one containing a graph - 2nd to 5th rows containing some data with the same formatting. I have created 2 classes: GraphCustomViewCell and DataCustomViewCell. Depending upon the position of the cell I load the correct CustomCell with: NSArray *topLevelObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"GraphCustomViewCell" owner:nil options:nil]; for(id currentObject in topLevelObjects) { if([currentObject isKindOfClass:[GraphCustomViewCell class]]) { cell = (GraphCustomViewCell *)currentObject; break; } } That works fine except that the first row, the one corresponding to the graph, is bigger (in height) that the 4 other rows, and as a results it hides the 3 first other rows. Is there any option in the table view that enables the custom cell to expand the default cells ? I'd like that the 5 rows (graph + 4 data rows) to fit the entire screen (480 - tabbar's height). For example, my app is at http://ajakimov.appspot.com/ and on it there is only some random text like 'form bell road smear sky orange fan glass key'. When i google for 'form bell road smear' for example or the title of the site for that matter , i get no results - cant find the site. Does anyone know how to make a appengine site google-able? Shouldn't be "firstViewController" be the same as [viewControllerClasses objectAtIndex:0]?

• Xcode / Interface Builder - better workflow from designer to coder?

  Were dealing with some pretty custom UI elements while building our OSX / Cocoa and iPhone / IPad apps. I was wondering if anyone has good recommendations or tricks for getting a better workflow between UI designers and coders while using Xcode / Interface Builder? It seems that many things require programmatic settings with UI editing in Cocoa... if you stray from the pre-built UI elements then you can't really easily drag-drop build a UI... instead we end up handing off a design doc ( photoshop/illustrator ) and then the poor developer has to deal with recreating this masterpiece in code or by using interface builder - usually a combination of both. This work flow is leading us to not so great results and we have to re-iterate around the UI elements to get them to work better. We love CSS and / or Flash designer to developer workflow where the UI could look exactly as it should and the hand off to developer was more seamless. Is there anyone out there who has some tricks - or insights into getting better workflow when using tools like Xcode / Interface Builder and doing Cocoa apps?

What I need is to get the top 10 users: user | score | time -----+-------+------ aaa | 90% | 11:00 bbb | 50% | 9:15 ... I've come up with the following SELECT: SELECT * FROM (SELECT user, score, time FROM tests_score ORDER BY user, score DESC, time DESC) t1 GROUP BY user ORDER BY score DESC, time LIMIT 10 It works fine but I'm not quite sure if my use of ORDER BY is the right way to pick the first row of each group of sorted records. Is there any better practice to achieve the same result? (I use MySQL 5)

• Computationally intensive scala process using actors hangs uncooperatively

  I have a computationally intensive scala application that hangs. By hangs I means it is sitting in the process stack using 1% CPU but does not respond to kill -QUIT nor can it be attached via jdb attach. Runs 2-12 hours at 800-900% CPU before it gets stuck The application is using ~10 scala.actors. Until now I have had great success with kill -QUIT but I am bit stumped as to how to proceed. The actors write a fair amount to stdout using println which is redirected to a text file but has not been helpful so far diagnostically. I am just hoping there is some obvious technique when kill -QUIT fails that I am ignorant of. Or just confirmation that having multiple actors println asynchronously is a real bad idea (though I've been doing it for a long time only recently with these results) Details scala 2.8.1 & 2.8.0 mac osx 10.6.5 java version "1.6.0_22" Thanks

I have a c# class CategoryType public class CategoryType { public string Value{get;set;} public string Name{get;set;} } My aim is to convert the reponses in to Collection<CategoryType> and use it in my C# Code As of now I am trying to use DataContractJSONSerialiser. But not sure if there is an easy and efficent way to do this. Any help would be appreciated

• MSSQL Search Proper Names Full Text Index vs LIKE + SOUNDEX

  I have a database of names of people that has (currently) 35 million rows. I need to know what is the best method for quickly searching these names. The current system (not designed by me), simply has the first and last name columns indexed and uses "LIKE" queries with the additional option of using SOUNDEX (though I'm not sure this is actually used much). Performance has always been a problem with this system, and so currently the searches are limited to 200 results (which still takes too long to run). So, I have a few questions: Does full text index work well for proper names? If so, what is the best way to query proper names? (CONTAINS, FREETEXT, etc) Is there some other system (like Lucene.net) that would be better? Just for reference, I'm using Fluent NHibernate for data access, so methods that work will with that will be preferred. I'm using MS SQL 2008 currently.

• Tinting iPhone application screen red

  I'm trying to place a red tint on all the screens of my iPhone application. I've experimented on a bitmap and found I get the effect I want by compositing a dark red color onto the screen image using Multiply (kCGBlendModeMultiply). So the question is how to efficiently do this in real time on the iPhone? One dumb way might be to grab a bitmap of the current screen, composite into the bitmap and then write the composited bitmap back to the screen. This seems like it would almost certainly be too slow. In addition, I need some way of knowing when part of the screen has been redrawn so I can update the tinting. I can almost get the effect I want by putting a red, translucent, fullscreen UIView above everything. That tints everything red within further intervention on my part, but the effect is much "muddier" than results from the composite. So do any wizards out there know of some mechanism I can use to automatically composite the red over the app in similar fashion to what the translucent red UIView does?

• Ad/Banner Management/Rotation for Ruby on Rails?

  Hi, I have a niche site that I'd like to sell banners for directly, rather than going through adsense. I need a system to manage the whole process: displaying ads and an administrative interface to manage them. It doesn't have to be anything terribly fancy, although open source is greatly preferred so that I can grow the system as needs be. Since the site itself is in Rails, I would prefer something for that environment. Googling turns up bunches of them in PHP, but the results are a bit polluted and I didn't have any luck finding one that was done in/for Rails. If I don't find one, I suppose I'll see what I can do to hack together something and release it myself under an open license. Another possibility is this: http://www.google.com/admanager - anyone have anything to say about it? Is it right for someone just selling a few ads for a not-so-big site? Thanks, Dave

  We are following Domain Driven Design for the implementation of a large website. However by putting the behaviour on the domain objects we are ending up with some very large classes. For example on our WebsiteUser object, we have many many methods - e.g. dealing with passwords, order history, refunds, customer segmentation. All of these methods are directly related to the user. Many of these methods delegate internally to other child object but this still results in some very large classes. I'm keen to avoid exposing lots of child objects e.g. user.getOrderHistory().getLatestOrder(). What other strategies can be used to avoid this problems?
