I've learned that EOF is -1. i type -1 but it just reprints it. It's a never ending loop. Over time did the library get changed and differs from what the book intended it to be? when i say library i mean the putchar()/getchar() that's in the library... sorry.

• Collision Detection within Player/Enemy Class

  I'm making a 2D platform game. Right now I'm just working on making a very generic Player class. I'm wondering if it would be more efficient/better practice to have an ActionListener within the Player class to detect collisions with Enemy objects (also have an ActionListener) or to handle all the collisions in the main world. Furthermore, I'm thinking ahead about how I will handle collisions with the platforms themselves. I've looked into the double boolean arrays to see which tiles players can go to and which they can't. I don't understand how to use this class and the player class at the same time. Thank you.

• Domain mapping issues

  I have two domain names - .com & .co.uk bought with 123-reg and just one student Windows hosting pack associated with the .co.uk domain. The .com domain is the main one which people would be trying to access, so I just mapped the domain to the hosting this morning. The problem is that I would really like it to be functional by tomorrow morning and the usual waiting time is 24-48 hours. Is there point in stopping the process and trying with forward it with CNAME record instead, does it take less time? (I can just go back and do proper domain mapping during the weekend) Also, is there a possible way to check whether the domain mapping has been done correctly before these 24-48 hours? From some computers I get 404 Error on homepage.

• How large should I make root, home, and swap partitions?

  Hello, I have a laptop with win7 installed. I have now made a 60gb partition which I want to install ubuntu into. The question I have, before I do the installation, is how large each of the root, swap, and home partition should be? I have read some place that root could be as small as 8GB, but isn't that too small? Since I guess beside ubuntu all the softwares installed will reside there as well? And I think I'm going to set my swap to be 2GB large. My main concern is how large should the root partition should be. I'm mainly going to use ubuntu for programming and browse the web.

• How do I create a Debian branch for my project on Launchpad?

  I have a project on Launchpad that consists of a single branch (trunk). I would like to create a second branch that contains the Debian packaging for the project (with the intent of creating a build recipe that merges it into the main branch before building). I've done this before by just pushing a local branch to lp:~me/project_name/debian. However, this stacks the branch with trunk, which I don't want (it becomes impossible to delete trunk without deleting the Debian packaging branch - a restriction that has caused problems before). What is the proper way to do this?

• Where can I get a list or data base of light reflectance values for different materials?

  I'm implementing lighting for a WebGL app but I'm not an artist so I don't know how to generate or where to obtain a list of materials with its values (diffuse, specular, ambient and shininess). I've been searching a lot but with no luck. Is there any list or DB I might have overlooked? Any common repository or something similar? Thanks in advance. • How do I consolidate the differences between iOS and Android update loops?

  I'm currently working on moving some Android-ndk code to the iPhone. From looking at some samples it seems that the main loop is handled for you and all you've got to do is override the render method on the view to handle the rendering. Then add a selector to handle the update methods. The render method itself looks like it's attached to the windows refresh. But in android I've got my own game loop that controls the rendering and updates using C++ time.h. Is it possible to implement the same here bypassing Apple's loop? I'd really like the keep the structures of the code similar.

  I've been using BURG for years to get rid of the eye sore that is the standard GRUB interface. When I upgraded to Quantal, the repository does not contain the updated information. I.e. after I add sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/burg sudo apt-get update I get the annoying response W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/n-muench/burg/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found It's been like this for a month, contrary to various websites which say it works. Is BURG being maintained? Have they created a better alternative (such as integration with GRUB, like it should have been in the first place). How do I get a decent-looking bootloader?

  I'm working on a pong game and have recently set up FBO rendering so that I can apply some post-processing shaders. • Samba user does not have folder read permission

  I have set up a special user for read only samba shares. I set him up in Samba and as a system user. I shared a couple of folders but that user cannot access them. I know samba is working because I also shared them with the main user of the system which is an admin account and it works fine. How can I allow this user to have read permissions on all the directories I want to share without changing anything for any other users of the system? For example, I don't want to give him ownership of any of the files/directories. Just ongoing recursive read access. ongoing recursive is important. If someone adds a file or directory, I still want him to automatically be able to read it.

  I will start off saying I searched a bit for this problem with little success. You see, I am an utmost noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux based OS (hence why I want to install it and discover it) and the thread I found were too specific for me to do anything with. Therefore, if you find a thread that is noob-friendly and answers my question, please link it below or please try to answer as simply as possible :) The problem: I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit alongside Windows 7 on my main hard drive (to get the choice which one to start when booting). Pop the CD in, reboot and get to the installer screen. I know I'm supposed to have 3 options, but I'm only given the option to erase my hard drive or "do something else". Therefore, my question is: how do I make Ubuntu recognise Windows 7, so it may install alongside it?

• Do threads delete themselves?

  Let's say I was working on a Swing application. Most of it is run on the EDT using SwingUtilities.invokeLater() inside the main method, because I heard (please correct me if I'm wrong) that that's what you need to do with Swing. However, some parts of it shouldn't run on the EDT. These parts are parts that take long to complete (I assume that this is because long tasks on the EDT will interfere with GUI stuff the EDT should be doing, and thus these kinds of tasks should be run on parallel, on a different thread. Is this assumption correct?) To do this, when I need to perform a task that takes long to complete and thus can't be run on the EDT like the rest of the program, I create a new thread and run that task inside it. My question is: When the run() method of that new thread finishes, aka the thread finished it's job. Does it delete itself? Or does it keep existing in the memory?

• Do you use i-->0 for backward loops?

  Some people write for (int i=N; i-->0; ) doSomething(i); instead of for (int i=N-1; i>=0; --i) doSomething(i); for backward loops. The --> "operator"1 looks very confusing at the first glance, but it's trivial: i-->0 simply parses as (i--)>0, and once you get it, you see it immediately. The main disadvantage is the strange look. The advantage is that you'll get it always right (unlike the more verbose version offering the possibility to forget something, which really happened to me a couple of times). What do you think about using the --> "operator"? 1First time I saw the funny term in a comment to this question today.

• My hardware MAC address is always 00:00:00:00:00:00 until I manually update 'eth0'. How can I fix this?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I use a wired connection. My network MAC address shows as 00:00:00:00:00:00.   I am just messing around, trying to figure out how stuff works and right now I have a couple questions about HTML, JS and CSS engines. I know there are two major JavaScript engines out there - V8 and JavaScriptCore (WebKit's JS engine as far as I know). Is that correct? And what are the main HTML + CSS renderers out there? Let's say I want to build a web browser using V8 (I saw it has some documentation and stuff + I like the way it works), what are the best options for me? Partially another question. Is there any bare browser that uses V8 and runs on Ubuntu at least? P.S. I am a Ubuntu user and prefer C++.

  How do I get my webpage not to go back when they hit the back button and are logged out and how can I add a web page to be blocked like FACEBOOK doesn't let you get into their site with out having a page or a account with them, and if you try to put something in the url and try to go to something on their site it gives you a web page that says "you have to be logged in first" . Like I don't want someone going to the url of the "index" page before they have signed up as a member they need to make an account first then they can have access to the "index" page. How do I do this. I have a website so far that has a database and the website has 5 pages so far and two of them which is the login and sign up page which are both used with php and mysql and they work fine. How do I restrict access to the main website by first having the users sign up with me for an account.

  I am trying to set up UbuntuOne on a new computer and after I enter the email and password, it asks for the keyring 'default'. I don't know what it is and I never set it. Makes it difficult to enter so it seems to be a counterproductive security default. I understand that if autologin is set the keyring is called. I tried setting the main user to need a password but if I reboot it doesn't ask for the password so it sort of autoboots still. So How do I set the keyring default password?   I'm trying to set up a mobile redirect for a site with 2 subfolders, and I cannot get both to work at the same time. This is the structure of the site www.mysite.com/EN/ www.mysite.com/ES/ This is a bilingual site so each subfolder contains the files corresponding to each language version. Then I was using a 301 redirect, and setting up the index in /EN/ as the main index. Everything was getting redirected to it. I was using DirectoryIndex index.html Redirect /index.html http://www.mysite.com/EN/index.html and several Rewritecond to redirect mysite.com and old urls to the new URL. It worked fine before I decided to add a mobile version - m.mysite.com. I used the solution provided in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3680463/mobile-redirect-using-htaccess, and it redirects my mobile version properly, but now the desktop is both working. Besides, my mobile version must be bilingual as well.

Div A displays a whole wordpress post and div B displays about 15 excerpts of posts with the same tag. To get this looking nice I set the hight of div B to be the same as the hight of div A with javaScript. This means alot of post excerpts will be hidden due to overflow hidden on div B. Will Google penalise me for this, and if so, how can I make this work and still please Google? Ps. I would gladly prevent the excerpts from being indexed but the main post must be indexed Ds.

• changed plesk root name, what DNS settings get modified?

  we recently changed our plesk server's main URL from siteold.com to sitenew.com. many websites had their NS set to ns1.siteold.com - does plesk automatically update that to need ns1.sitenew.com? should I change the godaddy settings? attempting to change them states "Nameserver Not Registered" - is this simply the delay required? lastly, when adding a new domain to plesk, one would simply need to adjust the nameserver for that site in godaddy to ns1.sitenew.com or ns1.newdomain.com? (does plesk have a centralized name server, or does each site acquire its own?)
