  i use gnome classic, i'm not a mouse fan. when i get an email while i'm writing code, i i would super+s to get to the indicator-applet-complete and read it. also to write emails, or check unread instant messages. upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 made super+s bind to applications menu rather than the indicator applet complete. i removed the binding from the applications using dconf-editor, navigating to: org-gnome-desktop-wm-keybindings and disabling (['disabled']) the panel-main-menu key. now, how do i bind super+s to the indicator applet complete? it seems to be some how binded, since if if press super+s and then move the cursor over the applet it'll open the drop down menus (and it won't if i hover without pressing super+s) but i don't want to have to use the mouse...

• Box2D random crash when adding joints

  I'm currently working on a project which uses Box2D, when the player uses a certain key it should anchor to the ground. For that I use a weld joint, but when I add the joint the game will sometimes crash, it has a 1/10 change to crash. • Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

In this post, I’ll share best practices on the configuration of data nodes to achieve optimum performance on the latest generations of multi-core, multi-thread CPU designs. Configuring the Data Nodes The configuration of data node threads can be managed in two ways via the config.ini file: - Simply set MaxNoOfExecutionThreads to the appropriate number of threads to be run in the data node, based on the number of threads presented by the processors used in the host or VM. - Use the new ThreadConfig variable that enables users to configure both the number of each thread type to use and also which CPUs to bind them too. The flexible configuration afforded by the multi-threaded data node enhancements means that it is possible to optimise data nodes to use anything from a single CPU/thread up to a 48 CPU/thread server. Co-locating the MySQL Server with a single data node can fully utilize servers with 64 – 80 CPU/threads. It is also possible to co-locate multiple data nodes per server, but this is now only required for very large servers with 4+ CPU sockets dense multi-core processors. 24 Threads and Beyond! An example of how to make best use of a 24 CPU/thread server box is to configure the following: - 8 ldm threads - 4 tc threads - 3 recv threads - 3 send threads - 1 rep thread for asynchronous replication. Each of those threads should be bound to a CPU. It is possible to bind the main thread (schema management domain) and the IO threads to the same CPU in most installations. In the configuration above, we have bound threads to 20 different CPUs. We should also protect these 20 CPUs from interrupts by using the IRQBALANCE_BANNED_CPUS configuration variable in /etc/sysconfig/irqbalance and setting it to 0x0FFFFF. The reason for doing this is that MySQL Cluster generates a lot of interrupt and OS kernel processing, and so it is recommended to separate activity across CPUs to ensure conflicts with the MySQL Cluster threads are eliminated. When booting a Linux kernel it is also possible to provide an option isolcpus=0-19 in grub.conf. The result is that the Linux scheduler won't use these CPUs for any task. Only by using CPU affinity syscalls can a process be made to run on those CPUs. By using this approach, together with binding MySQL Cluster threads to specific CPUs and banning CPUs IRQ processing on these tasks, a very stable performance environment is created for a MySQL Cluster data node. On a 32 CPU/Thread server: - Increase the number of ldm threads to 12 - Increase tc threads to 6 - Provide 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts. - The number of send and receive threads should, in most cases, still be sufficient. On a 40 CPU/Thread server, increase ldm threads to 16, tc threads to 8 and increment send and receive threads to 4. On a 48 CPU/Thread server it is possible to optimize further by using: - 12 tc threads - 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts - Avoid using IO threads and main thread on same CPU - Add 1 more receive thread. Summary As both this and the previous post seek to demonstrate, the multi-threaded data node extensions not only serve to increase performance of MySQL Cluster, they also enable users to achieve significantly improved levels of utilization from current and future generations of massively multi-core, multi-thread processor designs. • Alternatives to sql like databases

  Well i was wondering these days computers usually have 2GB or 4GB memory I like to use some secure client server model, and well an sql database is likely candidate. On the other hand i only have about 8000 records, who will not frequently be read or written in total they would consume less then 16 Megabyte. And it made me wonder what would be good secure options in a windows environment to store the data work with it multi-client single server model, without using SQL or mysql Would for well such a small amount of data maybe other ideas better ? Because i like to keep maintenance as simple as possible (no administrators would need to know sql maintenance, as they dont know databases in my target environment) Maybe storing in xml files or.. something else. Just wonder how others would go if ease of administration is the main goal. Oh and it should be secure to, the client server data must be a bit secure (maybe NTLM files shares https or...etc)

• OutOfBounds Exception when creating a PolygonShape using jbox2d

  So here's the deal, i'm parsing a file that contains the vertices for a polygon, that i want to create in box2d. I create a new PolygonShape() and then call .set() giving it a defined array of Vec, and that defined array's .length property. I expected this to work, since the documentation for jbox2d says this method takes a Vec array, and the count of Vec objects in that array. However, it errors out, and it seems to be unrelated to my code. The error i get is Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 8 at org.jbox2d.collision.shapes.PolygonShape.set(PolygonShape.java:174) and, upon looking at that line in the jbox2d svn repository, i still cannot figure out the issue. Any help is appreciated!

• Archive update fails while upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04

  I tried upgrading from Maverick to Natty, but the fetching of packages failed, when I tried to do a partial upgrade. It's displaying fetching complete, but actually it fails and I get following errors: Could not download the upgrades The upgrade has aborted. Please check your Internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far are kept. Failed to fetch http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mesa/libgl1-mesa-dri_7.10.1~git20110215.cc1636b6-0ubuntu1_i386.deb 404 Not Found I can't post more hyperlinks as per restrictions. • How do I justify upgrading to Windows Server 2008?

  We're just about to start a new greenfield project - it's a highly functional web application using ASP.NET MVC3, SQL Server etc. We're also going to be using Windows Workflow Foundation for the first time. Our client only wants to use his existing Windows Server 2003 web servers. My main issue (other than it is 8 years old) is that we don't much experierence of WWF development, but understand that using AppFabric (Server 2008 only) will improve WWF development. It's a significant cost to the client, as we need fail-over servers and a UAT environment as well. Am I correct in my understanding, and what methodologies can I use to justify the cost of upgrading?

• Do navigation menu links negatively impact SEO for pages' content?

  I've always had my doubts about navigation menus effect on SEO. You know, the vertical menus on the top that show in every page in the site linking to main sections and subsections. My issue is that if not done dynamically (i.e. after page is loaded or something), from a search engine's point of view it probably looks like a whole bunch of links in the beginning of the page, and links that probably have nothing to do with the page being analyzed, so it's probably not only confusing it, but also giving link 'juice' to the wrong pages or reducing its value. When I've asked SEO people about this, I usually get a "Google is smart, they'll recognize it as a menu and ignore it" response, but I'm not convinced (and the 'Google is smart' argument sounds almost like religion discussion to me). So does it affect SEO negatively or not? Are there any official posts on this topic?

  I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. • Where does ntpdate get its settings from and what is the "no servers can be used" error about?

  When I run ntpdate on its own, I get the following output: 8 Jun 15:47:46 ntpdate[31251]: no servers can be used, exiting If I run it with the -q ntp.ubuntu.com switch, it seems to query just fine. I have been hunting through many files and the most relevant one I have found is /etc/default/ntpdate, however, even with NTPDATE_USE_CONF set to no, I just can't understand/see how this error is occurring Any ideas? Update-- been looking non stop... It appears that ntupdate-debianworks fine and is the actual command that makes use of /etc/default/ntupdate, but, this doesn't answer the main question and I still can't find it...

• Using OpenCl to jiggle the Pipe

  I've got the Idea to use OpenCL to program a simple Renderer. A clear contra is, that this approach won't benefit from the hardware as the functions on the device (I think). Would it be useful to do this in OpenCL..lets say we want to Cull as early as possible so we won't have many per vertex operations. Is it correct, that Culling is done after the Vertex-Shader? For static-vertecies who won't get effected by the shader it could be interesting to cull them before. Another idea would be an deferred renderer. So the main question is: Would it make sense to program a renderer in OpenCL (aside the effort)? The resulting picture would be drawn in OpenGL.

• How do I reduce package content on a custom install CD?

  I normally do all my installs via PXE server, but I'm building a custom CD for kvm installs that are not on the same vlan as my PXE server. I would prefer this CD was as small as possible and it fetched packages from the network like netinstall mini.iso CD does, but netinstall doesn't mount /cdrom like the server install CD does. I need the cdrom for preseed. I've got my custom server install CD working, but it is still ~700MB. Trying to modify "dists/lucid/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz" gives me no love as it complains that I've got a corrupt Packages.gz no matter what I do. I'd rather the preseeded mirror was used rather than CD once it gets the cdrom setup. Any ideas?
