  I come across code such as "personObj=new Object();" where a new object called personObj is being defined. What I'm trying to find out is whether Object() is a prefined function in javascript, because I understand by using the mentioned code, a instance of a class is being formed but in the example code where I'm studying from, the class Object() is not being defined anywhere, so I was wondering if Object() was a predefined function in javascript and whether I can be directed to some online resources, as all that shows up in google when I try to find Object() are articles in general javascript object oriented programming.

• Permutations with extra restrictions

  I have a set of items, for example: {1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3}, and a restricting set of sets, for example {{3},{1,2},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{2,3},{2,3}. I am looking for permutations of items, but the first element must be 3, and the second must be 1 or 2, etc. One such permutation that fits is: {3,1,1,1,2,2,3} Is there an algorithm to count all permutations for this problem in general? Is there a name for this type of problem? For illustration, I know how to solve this problem for certain types of "restricting sets". Set of items: {1,1,2,2,3}, Restrictions {{1,2},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2},{1,2}}. This is equal to 2!/(2-1)!/1! * 4!/2!/2!. Effectively permuting the 3 first, since it is the most restrictive and then permuting the remaining items where there is room.

• link_to syntax with rails3 (link_to_remote) and basic javascript not working in a rails3 app?

  i am wondering if the basic link_to syntax is completely broken in current rails3 master or if i am doing some wrong syntax here. = link_to "name", nil, :onlick => "alert('Hello world!');" should actually produce an alert on click. very simple. does not work on my rails3 project! (also no error output!) any ideas? for the general link_to syntax i could not find an example where i could combine a link_to_remote with a confirmation, remote and html class (see my try below) = link_to "delete", {:action => "destroy", :remote => true, :method => :delete, :confirm => "#{a.title} wirklich L&ouml;schen?" }, :class => "trash" even the rails3 api does not help me here: http://rails3api.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html help!

• Perl regular expression question

  Suppose I have variables $x1 = 'XX a b XX c d XX'; $x2 = 'XX a b XX c d XX e f XX'; I want a regular expression that will find each instance of letters between XX. I'm looking for a general solution, because I don't know how many XX's there are. I tried using /XX(.*?)XX/g but this only matches "a b" for x1 and "a b", "e f" for x2 because once the first match is found, the engine has already read the second "XX". Thanks for any help.

• Difference between the Document classes

  I've been reading the javadocs trying to grasp around the swing Document API but I cant get something sensible out of it because there's so many classes: Document, StyledDocument, AbstractDocument, DefaultStyledDocument, PlainDocument, HTMLDocument, and someone mentioned DocumentFilter. This question is more on a general basis so can someone give an overview of the differences between the implementations and when the different interfaces and abstracts are for? For my specific case what I want to achieve is a data structure that will: hold three lines of text only. And attributes must not be per line or document. I will have a couple of thousand of these in some other structure so overhead is important. Anything that i can use for this or is it better to extend something? If so, what?

  Was wondering if anyone could help me with creating a pseudocode for how to go about dividing n-bit binary integers. Here is what I'm thinking could possibly work right now, could someone correct this if I'm wrong: divide (x,y) if x=0: return (0,0) //(quotient, remainder) (q,r) = divide(floor(x/2), y) q=2q, r=2r if x is odd: r = r+1 if r >= y: r = r-y, q = q+1 return (q,r) Would you guys say that this general pseudocode algorithm would accomplish the intended task of dividing n-bit numbers or am I missing something in my psuedocode before I start coding up something that's wrong?

• How do you get 100% code coverage with guards in Haskell?

  I'm trying to get (and prove) 100% test coverage for some code I'm writing in Haskell using HPC. However if I write something like this: fac n | n > 0 = n * (fac (n - 1)) | otherwise = 1 Then the second expression of the guard statement has always True tagged to it. What is the easiest way to overcome this in the general case? edit: Just to clarify. This code: fac n = if n > 0 then n * (fac (n - 1)) else 1 Works fine with HPC, (running it gives 100% code coverage).   hi, i have a general design question. we have a fairly big data model that represents an clinical object, the object itself has 200+ child attributes in the hierarchy. and we have a SetObject operation, and a GetObject operation. my question is, best practice wise, would it make sense to use that single data model in both operations or different data model for each? Because the Get operation will return much more details than what's needed for Set. an example of what i mean: the data model has say ProviderId, and ProviderName attributes, in the Get operation, both the ProviderId, and ProviderName would need to be returned. However, in the Set operation, only the ProviderId is needed, and ProviderName is ignored by the service since system has that information already. In this case, if the Get and Set operations use the same data model, the ProviderName is exposed even for Set operation, does that confuse the consuming developer?

• Beginners PHP / mySQL question

  I'm brand new to PHP & MySQL, and one function I'm creating needs to access a large table or database. I've created the database and it's currently in a MySQL table, which I'm accessing with no problem. The table is 11,000 rows in length, with 8 columns (all text less than 8 characters long) - it's static, and will never change. Without getting too particular, my users will hit a button which will trigger scripts to access the data, say 500 times or more. So in general would it be better practice to include all of this data in a big 'switch' or 'if... then' conditional right in my scripts, rather than opening and accessing the database connection hundreds, or maybe even thousands of times? It just seems like that might be a bottleneck waiting to happen. Thanks!

I have a general understanding of how a web farm works, I'm a web developer and I understand the technology behind it, but I'm curious to know specifically how a web farm is set up and which professionals are involved. Things to consider probably are the hardware, the power supply, the software managment, the cooling system and if possible the usage of green technology/power recycling. Basically, can you explain me how a web hosting company is structured and how it works? A big question, I know, but from what I already read here about the subject a lot of you know this stuff. • AS or not to AS, queries

  I'm fairly new to PHP/MySql and using queries in general. I was just wondering if there's any benefit to using "AS" in a query other than trying to make it look cleaner? Does it speed up the query at all? I probably could have figured this out by a google search but I wanted to ask my first question and see how this works. • Add 64 bit offset to a pointer

  In F#, there's the NativePtr module, but it seems to only support 32 bit offsets for its’ add/get/set functions, just like System.IntPtr does. Is there a way to add a 64 bit offset to a native pointer (nativeptr<'a) in F#? Of course I could convert all addresses to 64 bit integers, do normal integer operations and then convert the result again to nativeptr<'a, but this would cost additional add and imul instructions. I really want the AGUs to perform the address calculations. For instance, using unsafe in C# you could do something like void* ptr = Marshal.AllocHGlobal(...).ToPointer(); int64 offset = ...; T* newAddr = (T*)ptr + offset; // T has to be an unmanaged type Well actually you can't, because there is no "unmanaged" constraint for type parameters, but at least you can do general pointer arithmetic in a non-generic way. In F# we finally got the unmanaged constraint; but how do I do the pointer arithmetic?

• Generic type parameter naming convention for Java (with multiple chars)?

  In some interfaces i wrote I'd like to name generic type parameter with more than one character to make the code more readable. Something like.... Map<Key,Value> Instead of this... Map<K,V> But when it comes to methods, the type-parameters look like java-classes which is also confusing. public void put(Key key, Value value) This seems like Key and Value are classes. I found or thought of some notations, but nothing like a convention from sun or a general best-practice. Alternatives i guesed of or found... Map<KEY,VALUE> Map<TKey,TValue>

• Corona SDK - Make a character pass through a platform

  I'm building a game that has a character which should jump up on multiple platforms. The jumping functionality is done, but I would like if the character is just below a platform (static body), when I press the "jump" button, the character should pass through that platform and then sit on it. Right now it collides with the platform, and character cannot jump on it. Do you have any idea how this can be achieved? Right now the platforms are represented by rectangles with "static" body type: local platform = display.newRect( 50, 280, 150, 10 ) platform:setFillColor ( 55, 55, 55) physics.addBody ( platform, "static", {density=1.0, friction=1.0, bounce=0 }) And I was thinking if I could change, or remove the body type of platform when the character collids with it, so he can pass trough platform, but I don't know how to do this, or in general if this will work... maybe there are some built in techniques on how to achieve the effect I want?

  Memcache in general and on AppEngine in specific is unreliable in the sense that my data may be deleted from the cache for whatever reason at any point in time. However, in some cases there might be cases where a small risk may be worth the added performance using memcache could give, such as updating some data in memcache that gets saved periodically to some other, more reliable storage. Are there any numbers from Google that could give me an indication of the actual probability that a memcache entry would be lost from the cache before its expiration time, given that I keep within my quotas? Are there any reasons other than hardware failure and administrative operations such as machines at the data centers being upgraded/moved/replaced that would cause entries to be removed from memcache prematurely?

• mod_rewrite: no ? and # in REQUEST_URI

  Hello. What I'm trying to do: have pretty URLs in the format 'http://domain.tld/one/two/three', that get handled by a PHP script (index.php) by looking at the REQUEST_URI server variable. In my example, the REQUEST_URI would be '/one/two/three'. (Btw., is this a good idea in general?) I'm using Apache's mod_rewrite to achieve that. Here's the RewriteRule I use in my .htaccess: RewriteRule ^/?([a-zA-Z/]+)/?$ /index.php [NC,L] This works really well thus far; it forwards every REQUEST_URI that consists of a-z, A-Z or a '/' to /index.php, where it is processed. Only drawback: '?' (question marks) and '#' (hash keys) seem to still be allowed in the REQUEST_URI, maybe even more characters that I've yet to find. Is it possible to restrict those via my .htaccess and an adequate addition to the RewriteRule? Thanks!

• Does /boot safe on top of a lvm LV (logical volume)?

  Title already asked the question. More specifically, I read in some documents that logical volumes are nice in general but not for /boot in a linux system. They say that bootloaders don't understand LVM volumes, so create a separate partition for /boot out of lvm. I recently installed Ubuntu server (9.10) for my home server, but by default /boot is created in the LVM. Everything is fine now, but I am not sure it is safe to use /boot in LVM. Second question is do I really need a physical partition (volume)(pv) for /boot or is it equally fine if I put it into a logical volume (lv) on top of a single shared volume group. • Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

  I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

• Simplest possible Ubuntu GUI app.

  On Windows, no matter which framework you use, all the frameworks need, ultimately, to call the user mode user32::CreateWindowEx API to actually create a window on the desktop. On Ubuntu, or indeed Linux systems in general, it seems that the choices are to use a widget framework like Wx or Qt or GTK+ to create a GUI application, but all these frameworks feel like they are wrapping something more fundamental. Do these all talk directly to X on Linux? I thought Ubuntu was moving to a non X window manager, so what are they going to use then? What library would I use to access the window manager all these frameworks use?

• Is this a valid C statement ?

  Lets say I write char c[99] = {'Stack Overflow'}; in C or C++ it does compiles fine but does this valid? By valid I meant not invoking any kind of undefined or unspecified behavior. Again if I write char c[99] = 'Stack Overflow'; gcc complains about multicharacter constant which is obvious but in the above when I am enclosing within curly brackets compiler is happy! why is it so ? I also notice that puts(c); after the first statement will output 'w' precisely the last character of a general string in-place of Stack Overflow. why so ? Could somebody explain this behavior may be separately.

• Having access to a private variable from other classes in Java

  If I want to create a form that adds people to a List, how do I have access to that List from another class? Where would I define that List so other classes can access the members, the size, etc? For example, if I have Class Foo that has the GUI for my form, along with buttons to add and remove people to the List, it would make sense to me to declare the List as a private instance variable of Class Foo. But then if I have another class, Class Bar, how does it get the values that are currently in that List to update some other graphical components? Or is that the wrong place to declare the List in general? Thanks.
