I want to start/stop services from /usr/local/etc/rc.d in the RHEL way, e.g.
service apache restart
service mysql restart
How can I set this up on FreeBSD?
I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo).
My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem.
I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

I have a problem with "Security Shield". They pop up every 5 min and tell me that there are many viruses in my computer, that I should buy their license..
I have installed Sophos and don't want "Security Shield". But I didn't find any way to get rid up it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Sorry if I repeat the question from someone. If so, please show me the link.
I get strange disk io nread (bytes read) counter values (from kstat) on Solaris. Example of collected nread value for sd6 disk collected in 30s interval (command kstat -n sd6):

One would suppose that the relative read bytes count can't be negative..
I wonder what can couse this situation and whether there is more reliable disk io data available.

Is there any solution out there to turn a Mac into a true multi-user thin client server?
I'd like to set up a few cheap PCs with access to a couple accounts using something like VNC, but it isn't economical to buy a new server for each user or a new license for virtualized OS X Server for each user.
I'm fully aware that OS X Server lets you set up users with "network home folders," and I know there's also VNC built into Mac OS X. Neither of these fit the bill (the former requires a thick client, and the latter is single-user only)
UPDATE: yay, Lion! http://www.9to5mac.com/54102/10-7-lion-allows-multi-user-remote-computing
My network engineer states I am part of a cluster where two apache application servers(512G RAM each) have 142 instances each of Tomcat (of which my company represents 6 each with 2G RAM). This seems like a lot and my latency issues move with the hour of the day - 7AM CST software functions fine, 10AM CST - system slows significantly this slowness continues until 6PM CST. My question is how many Tomcat instances can one application server handle?
I believe every system administrator is used to open source by now. From Apache to Firefox or Linux, everyone uses it at least a little bit.
However, most open source developers are not good in marketing, so I know that there are hundreds of very good tools out there that very few people know.
To fill this gap, share your favorite open source tool that you use in your day-to-day work that is not very famous.
*I will post mine in the comments.
I believe my question may be best answered by using Access since that's more what it's made for. However, I don't have a license for Access here at work and trying to get one is pulling teeth.
So I'm curious if there is any way to compile reports with data in an Excel 2007 sheet. The output can be .doc, .docx, .pdf - or anything else if there's a decent piece of free 3rd party software.
This might be easiest solved by just creating another sheet in the same workbook and directly linking to the data I want to display in a report-esque format. But I wanted to see if SU could offer some more creative solutions.
I have read about scaling (in terms of terminology and methods). This got me confused about the following:
On a single computer, running a web server (say apache), if the system administrator adds a front, caching, reverse-proxy such as Varnish, which in that scenario increase the amount of requests this server is able to handle.
My question:
Setting up such cache increases the capacity of the server to handle work, hence scales it, but without increasing neither the amount of nodes or the node's capacity.
What is the name for this type of scaling?
Hi, We plan to host our website on a linux server. The site is created using java based technologies and will run on multiple instances of tomcat with apache in the front. I want to go in for a 64 bit linux OS so that I can install 64bit jvm. So my options are :
Ubuntu
Fedora
CentOS
which one (and which version) would be the most stable?
HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Fri, 06 Nov 2009 00:35:42 GMT Server: Apache Content-Length: 0 Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=100 Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: text/plain
What does that mean, and why does that text appear on bottom of ALL html, php, css and js files?
I am running a nph-proxy.cgi script.
I have an apache+php application running on server#1 and for many reason i want to migrate my solR server from server#1 to server#2, my problem is that solr seems to not listen external request.
port 8983 is closed on server#2 even if solr is running, no firewall set-up
thanks for helping :)
I am new at Amazon Cloud technologies. I ve set up an Amazon Linux instance created my keys and assigned elastic IP. Also, I opened all TCP, UDP, ICMP ports(ok, it's very dangerous, but I am using it for test purposes). I ve also installed Apache server and enabled it. But still cant ping or access my instance via IP. Any ideas?
EDIT:
Please see a screenshot of the security groups settings. All ports are open...

I wonder if someone did the same, I create an image of a server, then I move it to another , and that other one will have a different domain, so, now I want to create and send mail with the new domain, still the other domain is the one who signs... I already changed the dovecot.cnf , postfix, apache and hosts file, but I cant find where is that domain comming from, any idea of where to look for?
Thanks!
I'm experiencing an issue when sometimes the memory gets 100% full, and the swap file also, and the server becomes non-responsive and has to be restarted (causing also problems in database). This is what Cacti shows:
The server is running a web-app (database + apache) and during that specific moment didn't experience any ir-regular traffic or usage. This scenario happened twice in the last week. What can cause this? How can I resolve the issue?
I cannot access my site through my web browser, using either the domain name or IP address (which also pings fine).
My site was working last night when I went to bed, so I can't think what might have done it.
I have tried restarting apache to no avail.
update: I've noticed that http://[IP Address]/phpymyadmin works but [domain name]/phpmyadmin does not, and the same happens for webmin (https://[IP]:1000). Could this be a problem with BIND?
Right now I am using an absolute path to connect i.e.
server/var/svnroot/repositoryname
I would like to be able to do
/server/repoistoryname
Is there a way to set this up? I would like to avoid symmlinks since that adds overhead. I would rather just have SVN automatically goto the folder similar to how the DocumentRoot works with Apache.
For a mature website I only need to generate a thumbnail once, using timthumb, which places the thumbnail in /thumbs/.
try_files $uri ^thumbs/(.*)$ /thumb.php?w=290&q=90&src=../full/%1 last;
How could I fix this code?
Working apache code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/thumbs/(.*)$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /thumb.php?h=90&q=90&src=../full/%1 [NS,L]
Thanks in advance :)
Hey I have four computers(with linux):
two with mediawiki(mirror, both connected to one db)
one with mysql
one server(DHCP,DNS etc)
I configured on my server load balancer and now hen I type in browser name.local for example I get one of my mediawiki servers. I press f5 really fast and then I see in top command both computers are being loaded but not much. I used tool ab (apache benchamrk) but if I run it always is connected to one server never alternately.
I use this settings:
ab -n 100 -c 10 http://name.local/
Does anyone have any links or simple information on how to do this? Basically I bought a bare bones VPS, installed Apache, PHP, etc... but I can't figure how to add my domain's DNS entry.
I've been working with linux for a while but in a rather simple manner.
I understand that scripts in init.d are executed when the os starts but how exactly does it works?
How does the os know which paramater to pass to a script?
To start apache I would do sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start. If I run sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 it doesn't work without the start. How does the os pass start to the script?
I have source of webfiles. I need to make a RPM for it. I have placed my source in SOURCES folder and use following spec file. But it is creating noarch rpm with 2MB size, but my source is greater than 2MB size. Its also did not attach files with this. I think i have a problem in spec file.
