Is there any Security software recommendation for Windows Server 2003 as a Web Application/Website server?
Or any particular settings I should adjust before making a website to be Live.
I have a Logitech Optical Mouse/Keyboard.
I have been using them just fine with the system drivers
for almost a year now.
I recently updated my Kaspersky software and rebooted.
Now the mouse is frozen in the middle of my screen.
I am not able to login to the Windows XP Pro box that
has the frozen mouse (because i can't work the mouse)
but am able to remote desktop to this computer.
Things I know / have tried:
When I boot on the problem computer, I am able to use
the keyboard, but not the mouse.
I have installed the latest version of Logitech's SetPoint
(with the updated drivers) on the problem computer (via remote
desktop) and that didn't seem to matter.
I bought new batteries for the mouse and that didn't matter.
I have tried the mouse/keyboard on another computer and the
mouse works just fine there.
My suspicion is that the Kaspersky install has overwritten
a driver of some sort.
Things I have not done (and would appreciate detailed steps if
you feel this is the way to go):
1) Uninstalled all the mouse drivers on the machine and reboot. Then,
reinstall.
Note: When I get to the Device Manager I don't see an option for Human Interface Devices (where the mouse device is). Here are my options: Computer, Disk Drives, DVD/CD-Rom drives, Floppy controllers, IDE ATA/ATAPI, Imaging devices, Network Adapters, Other devices, Ports, Processors, Sound, video, and gaming, System devices, USB controllers. Also, I should point out that Video Controller is the only thing under Other devices and it has a yellow exclamation mark. The same is true for all the items under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I think this means I have to update my BIOS but, since my mouse was working just fine without doing that, I don't think that is my problem. So, how do I get to my Mouse Device?
2) Update my BIOS.
Note: As pointed out above, I don't think this matters as my mouse was working just fine under my computer's current BIOS version.
Thanks for your help.
I've been wondering what command-line aliases (such as in bash, or just even .bat files under Windows) you can't live without?
I'll start off with my favourite:
alias q=exit
I need free and portable tool to record desktop activities in animated .gif format. i need gif video because it can run on web page without needing any plugin
My os is windows XP and i need portable tool only. I want to record and save directly in gif format.
Alright, so here's the deal...
For a while, I wanted to mess with Linux. I don't know why, but I wanted to. So, what I did was use WUBI and install Ubuntu. Because of some unknown reason (Intel Rapid Start? Half the drivers being on a Lenovo-installed SSD [separate from the main hard drive]?) it wouldn't dual boot. So, I decided to use Linux Mint instead, and install it in a partition. Since Windows 7 Home Premium won't make partitions any more if you have a certain number already, I just shrank my system drive and left empty space for the installer to claim.
When I installed Mint, it worked, but left my Windows 7 installation unable to boot and eventually it corrupted. I tried to use a system repair disc I burned earlier but it didn't find the Windows installation, so I assume the partition corrupted.
I used this link:http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how_to_install_windows_7_without_the_disc.html
to try and reinstall Windows. What happened was that originally it said that the partition I was trying to reinstall from had been locked down by the OEM (Lenovo). So, I went into GParted, wiped EVERYTHING, and selected 'Construct new Boot record' or whatever that function is, and now the error is:
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."
Does anyone know how to see the log files? Can anyone help? This system is a month old but the warranty only covers hardware failures, and I would need to pay around USD$60 for them to fix it.
Please help. Any ideas? this is my main machine...
Extra information: I have at my disposal:
System Repair Disc (Burned myself)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 installation disk (burned from the pcworld links)
Gparted Live CD
Linux Mint 13 live cd
A system backup (from the morning before this catastrophe) made using the Windows Backup and Restore. I put it on an external drive...that should be safe for now.
For a number of reasons I need to change the health check URL of a live site behind an ELB. The ELB is configured for health checks every 30 seconds, with a healthy threshold of 2 and unhealthy threshold of 2. I need to ensure I make this change with no outage. If I make the change to the health check URL, and assuming the URL checks successfully, will the instances stay healthy on the load balancer, or will they go out of service until they succeed 2 health checks (in 1 minute)?
I've got a set of .tar.gz files, which are duplicity backup files (either full backups or incremental ones). I'd like to compute which directories take the most space on backups. This will most probably be a different figure to calculating which directories take the most space on a live filesystem because I need to account for how often are files changing (and therefore taking space on incremental backups) and how compressible are files.
I know that while many other archive formats store compressed files as different entities inside the archive file, .tar.gz files do not, and therefore it is impossible to get an exact amount of storage taken in the archive by a single file after compression. Are there any tools to calculate at least some estimates?
I would like to download this video: http://videolectures.net/mlss07_rasmussen_bigp/. But I cannot do it. How can I do it?
Of course the platform is Mac OS X.
I've been using my laptop with an external LCD monitor attached to it at work (Philips 201E). And at home with a different external monitor (Samsung 2032BW).
I have an ATI graphics card (HD3450), with Ati Catalyst drivers enabled and I'm using the Single display desktop (Multi-Desktop) seeting. At work I have the external monitor on the left and laptop on the right, while at home the other way around.
So when I switch between the two setups, I just needed to go to Ati Catalyst Control Center, change the order of the displays, change the resolution (Home - 1680x1050, Work - 1440x900), reboot and it was all fine.
But since a while it doesn't work properly anymore:
At home it still works fine.
At work it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some reason, after a few resolution/setting changes in ACCC and reboots... it's very strange and annoying.
With the home monitor I can see the whole bootup process on both monitors (laptop + LCD) and it always just works fine. With the work monitor on the external LCD monitor I just see "No video input" until I get to the login screen, then it shows up there as well. But after login it will either:
Flicker a few times, but then work
OK.
Or (more often) Flicker once
and then go back to "No video input"
again. I usually end up rebooting a
few times until it works.
Does anyone have any idea for fixing it?

If I set up my own VPN or similar server on my always on computer at home, they say I could access gmail from my work computer. My question is, will the IT guys at work be able to notice something strange is going on if I'm on gchat at work through one of these things? (by IT guys I mean the two guys in charge of our network at work - its a small company)
I have a Quad Core Intel PC with 4GB of RAM - I've been using it over a year to run web server stress tests (ab.exe -n 5000 -c 500), encode HD video, play games, open hundreds of tabs in multiple browsers (simultaneously), worked on multi-layered +8000px art in photoshop and just about every other thing you can think of.
As of yet I've never passed 2.3GB of RAM usage. How in the world do you use all 4GB? Is there any use for it?
All of a sudden, my Microsoft Office files have the generic file icon, and it happens with Powerpoint and Word, but not Excel. I can open the files just fine, and I tried restarting my computer, creating new files, clicking F5 on the desktop, turning off my Windows XP theme patcher, and none of them worked, any ideas?
EDIT: I've also noticed that it happened to the following programs: Windows Live Messenger, iTunes, and Skype, so not just MS Office. Yet, some are still fine like IE, Paint, GIMP, Paint.NET, a few web browsers, etc.
Hello. Last week I was running this tn5257 emulator for as400. And no I can't as soon as it starts it closes down. I already turned off the firewall thinking it could be that, but it isn't. I'm just wondering if it was an update or something I can fix.
Here's a video of what happens.
Any info will be greatly appretiated.
Thanks!
Hi, I live in Israel and I bought Windows 7 Professional in Hebrew. I'd like to switch the language to English.
In Control Panel - Region and Language I don't have any options to switch the display language to English because only Hebrew is installed. In Windows Update, there are no language updates. I have waited three days, and still no language update.
Any Ideas?
Thank you.
I created a gmail account ages ago whilst living in the UK where google has trademark problem with gmail (similar to budweiser v budvar dispute)
Now I no longer live in the uk, how can I change the address from being
[email protected]
to simply
[email protected]
I've changed the 'reply address' to be gmail, and it works fine, but it's still annoying.
I was using Firefox 3.5 when this happened.
I tried the obvious workarounds: Upgrade to 3.6. Downgrade to 3.0. None worked.
I'm using Windows Vista 64-bit.
The only extensions installed are Lori, Roboform, Google Toolbar, Live HTTP Headers, Skype, and Yahoo Toolbar -- all of which I have used for a very long time with no problems.
I want to step up from the slow AGP graphics world to the latest PCI Express one.
I understand that the PCIe x16 is the fastest, so which desktop would you suggest I buy?
My interests are mainly gaming, so what PCIe x16 video card is worth buying to play today's and tomorrow's games?
Thanks,
Alan
I'm looking for a program that I can use to control the mouse from the keyboard.
I think a video can explain it much better that I could, so please check out Mouser from lifehacker.com:
http://lifehacker.com/212816/hack-attack-operate-your-mouse-with-your-keyboard
Unfortunately, it's only for Windows, but something this would be the perfect solution.
I found a lot of help on mapping keys to programs, but nothing about mapping keys to mouse control.
Hey all,
I run the following from command line:
handbrakeCLI.exe -i SourceFile.mkv -o OutputFile.mkv --stop-at 120
According to the CLIGuide you can supply the --stop-at value as seconds (which is what I want, stop encoding 120 seconds into the file). My purpose for this is to quickly create a very high quality video clip from a full movie for testing other encoding processes.
However, when I view my output file it is the entire movie. Any ideas?
What is going on here?! I am baffled.

To me this should be working fine. I can't think of anything that would be causing this other then fundamental driver errors? I can't seem to get much/if any higher then the 361MB a second, is this hitting the "SATA2" link speed, which it shouldn't given it is a PCIe2.0 card. Or maybe some cacheing quirk - I do have Write Back enabled.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Tests for me to perform? Or if you require more information, I am happy to provide it!
This is a video fileserver for editing machines, so we have a preference for FAST reads over writes. I was just expected more from RAID 50 and 24 drives together...
EDIT: (hdparm results)
serveradmin@FILESERVER:/Volumes/MercuryInternal$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 17458 MB in 2.00 seconds = 8735.50 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 884 MB in 3.00 seconds = 294.32 MB/sec
EDIT2: (config details)
Also, I am using a RAID block size of 256K. I was told a larger block size is better for larger (in my case large video) files.
EDIT3: (Bonnie++ Results. Would love some guidance with this!)
Hi, I'm having a problem installing the drivers from the video card. Just finished installing the driver, reboot my OS, and my monitor is starting off in energy saving mode and does not boot UBUNTU. What I can do?.
Sorry for my English. I used the google translator
The wire says PCI-Express on one end. Here is what the cable looks like:
Can anyone tell me what this cable is called, and what it is used for (e.g., video card, optical drive, etc)?
I have a couple of digital camcorders that output .MOV files encoded in h.264 video/AAC audio. They won't load into Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Player - I guess I need to install some codecs. Where can I get these?
Hello,
I have latest Ubuntu installed, with firefox 3.6.3.
I have flashplugin-installer and ubuntu-restricted-extras installed.
No other package concerning flash (gnash, swf) is installed.
I can play videos on youtube or some other sites, some even some videos on yahoo, but I cannot play this video (and some others) - the blue circle in the center (like loading...) keeps flashing forever.
Why can't I play it, and how to make it play?
