  • Where do you search/look for game developers for an indie game startup?

    Hey there I just recently saw stackoverflow had a game dev sister site so here I am, wondering if you experienced fellows know where one can search/look for game developers for an indie game startup? In other words: I have a game idea which I've written down with as much detail as possible (so anyone else can understand how it works) and now I'm looking for a heavy php programmer with whom to pair up in order to go from idea to reality. I'm a front-end/interface designer and an intermediate programmer. I recognize my project requires heavy programming skills which I do not have as of today =) So, what websites, communities or places do you recommend I go look into? I have often seen developers and DBA complaining and confused about their job, work and life. Complaining is easy and everyone can do. I have heard quite often expression – “I do not have any other option.” I requested Srini Chanda (renowned author of Amazon Best Seller 3 Lives, in search of bliss (Amazon | Flipkart) to write a guest post on this subject which developer can read and appreciate. Let us see Srini’s thoughts in his own words. Each of us who works in the technology industry carries an especially heavy burden nowadays. For, fate has placed in our hands an awesome power to shape our society and its consciousness. For that reason, we must pay more and more attention to issues of professionalism, social responsibility and ethics. Equally importantly, the responsibility lies in our hands to ensure that we view our work and career as an opportunity to enlighten and lift ourselves up. Story: A Prisoner, 20 years and a Wheel Many years ago, I heard this story from a professor when I was a student at Carnegie Mellon. A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During his time in prison, he was asked to turn a wheel every day. So, every day he turned the wheel. At times, when he was tired or puzzled and stopped turning the wheel, he would be flogged with a whip. The man did not know anything about the wheel other than that it was placed outside his jail somewhere. He wondered if the wheel crushed corn or if it ground wheat or something similar. He wondered if turning the wheel was useful to anyone. At the end of his jail term, he rushed out to see what the wheel was doing. To his disappointment, he found that the wheel was not connected to anything. All these years, he had been toiling for nothing. He gave a loud, frustrated shout and dropped dead. How many of us are turning wheels wondering what it is connected to? How many of us have unstated, uncaring attitudes towards our careers? How many of us view work as drudgery, as no more than a way to earn that next paycheck? How many of us have wondered about the spiritually uplifting aspect of work? Can a workforce that views work as merely a chore, be ethical? Can it produce truly life enhancing technology? Can it make positive contributions to the quality of life of a society? I think not. Thanks to Pinal and you, his readers, for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts in a series of guest posts. I’d like to present a few ways over the next few weeks, in which we can tap into the liberating potential of work and make our lives better in the process. Now, please allow me to tell you another version of the story that the good professor shared with us in the classroom that day. Story: A Prisoner, 20 years, a Wheel and the LIFE A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During his time in prison, he was asked to turn a wheel every day. So, every day he turned the wheel. At first, his whole body and mind rebelled against his predicament. So, his limbs grew weary and his mind became numb and confused. And then, his self-awareness began to grow. He began to wonder how he came to be in the prison in the first place. He looked around and saw all his fellow prisoners also turning the wheel. His wife, his parents, his friends and his children – they were all in the prison too, and turning their own wheels! He began to wonder how this came about. As he wondered more and more, he began to focus less on his physical drudgery and boredom. And he began to clearly see his inner spirit which guided him in ways that allowed him to see the world with a universal view. His inner spirit guided him towards the source of eternal wisdom and happiness. He began to see the source of happiness in everything around him – his prison bound relationships, even his jailers and in his wheel. He became a source of light to those around him. His wheel jokes and humor infected them with joy and happiness. Finally, the day came for his release from jail. He walked calmly outside the jail and laughed aloud when he saw that the wheel was not connected to anything. He knelt down, kissed it and thanked it for the wisdom it taught him. Life is the prison. The wheel is your work. Both are sacred. Both have enormous powers to teach us wisdom and bring us happiness. Whether we allow them to do so, is a choice we have to make.   • Is there any ways to extend the search (find-in-files) capability of WinRAR?

    WinRAR is good at searching for a string in text files(java, xml, txt etc.) within an archive and it supports multiple archive formats. (rar, 7zip, winzip etc) Is there some way to extend this feature (by means of plug-ins etc) to search within Pdf & office files (doc, ppt), Or any other similar unzip tool which has this feature? (Extracting the entire archive & searching using Windows search is always one option)

    Why my Google local listing not showing up even if searched with exact title in maps.Google.com? Its showing mostly results from US when searched. My bi solution company map location listing comes up when searched with company name from Google web search, but not showing up in maps.Google. Is Google places or map listing different from Google local listing?. I have done my listing in Google local. If they are different is there any way to take the local listing to Google place or Google map also. My listing is a claimed one with 100 percent completed profile details.

  • How to turn a pdf into a text searchable pdf?

    I have a number of scanned documents in pdf and I want to be able to search them. How can I do that? Essentially I have to OCR the pdf and then blend the extracted text back into a new pdf. I have unsuccesfully tried pdfocr (which gives me this issue: https://github.com/gkovacs/pdfocr/issues/7) pdfsandwich (of which the software center says it is a poor package and I should not install it) Is there a software package I am unaware of? Or a script that does this?

  • google webmaster showing 6 pages submitted 0 indexed, yet i can see them all there when i search in google?

    I have a small 'brochure' type site with 6 pages, i can see them all the pages showing up in google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section it says 6 submitted, (the blue bar of the graph), but the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed ? any idea why this is ? I dont really think its that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. =================================================== UPDATE 9/3/12 having just looked in google webmaster its showing that there are 11 pages indexed, under the health index status tab.. but under the optimization sitemap tab it shows 6 urls submitted but only 1 indexed ? please see images bellow index status: Sitemap status:

  • How can I create a dynamic site that is still search-bot friendly?

    If I want to have a slide effect between pages. You click a link, it is loaded off to the side and then slides in (pushing the old page off the other side). I can imagine using jQuery to do the PHP and the effects... but how do I do something like this that gracefully degrades for users without Javascript, including bots? Possibly more problematic: what if I wanted to have a sort of mural background across the site, perhaps with a parallax scrolling effect, and sliding to other pages reveals more of the, possibly giant image? Again, I can imagine how to do this with lots of fancy jQuery and PHP but it would heavily rely on those. How can I gracefully degrade in a situation like that? Any pointers, articles or books would be greatly appreciated. I keep trying to search for answers but I just get a lot of "theory"-based, unhelpful blogs.

    I am running some websites and am constantly checking keywords' rankings on google.com. And it is really important for us to see the organic search result without logging in or setting a specific location. Since this morning my colleague and I have checked the same ranking on both IE and firefox, the result surprisingly is very different (it almost feel like IE was logged in because the ranking is much higher, while in reality it is not). I have changed computer and the same problem occurred. It did not happen before. Can anyone tell me why is it?

    I have built my entire site using AJAX (indeed it's GWT). I have also implemented AJAX crawling proposed by Google. However, after the implementation, I found that neither Yahoo , Bing, nor Baidu implemented that scheme! I'm wondering if there is a way to identify the web client is a search robot. If they are, they will be shown the HTML snapshot I created. It will be best if I can identify them in APACHE level, then I can just do a mod_rewrite. But it's still ok if I can do that in PHP or GWT.

  • Blog: Search results prefer index page over content pages.

    I have a typical blog that has recent posts on the main page, and each post's title links to a page that only shows that one article and comments and such. I was looking through some of the keywords used to get to my site and I was noticing that some of the searches would only show my main page, and not the page for the article. If users have to find the article by scrolling through the main page, it just makes it more difficult. Is there some way that I can tell search engines to rank the content page higher than my index page? Or can I do something else like not display the full text of the posts on the main page?

  • iPhone4: Keep playing songs after song selected from Search iPhone screen ends?

    When I first got my iPhone 4, if I selected a song from the "search iPhone" screen (when you hit home twice), iTunes would start playing a playlist of all my songs, starting with the selected one. I recently updated it to 4.2.1 (I don't remember exactly what I was at before). Now, when I select a song from the "Search iPhone" screen, iTunes starts playing a playlist containing only that song. Is there a way I can get the old behavior back?

    I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

Currently I have it set up so visits to any page performs an authentication: before_filter :authenticate, :except => [:beta] //authenticate checks for a logged in user But the webpage has a lot of content that I would like to see indexed by search engines, and I was wondering if there's an easy way to allow crawlers to do their work? I am not very knowledgable on SEO related stuff at all, so sorry if this is an suboptimal way to phrase the question.

  • Pinging/connecting to server.domain.local never works, but server does when the search domain is specified

    This is a bit of a weird one. I'm running ubuntu on a Windows domain. If I type "ping server" I can ping correctly and I can connect without any problems. It looks up my search domain (domain.local) and everything is hunky dory. Problem is when I try to ping server.domain.local. It just can't look up the server and comes back with "ping: unknown host server.domain.local" Part of me thinks that the name servers aren't set correctly, but I wonder if there is something I can do to get around it.

  • How do I locate the CGRect for a substring of text in a UILabel?

    For a given NSRange, I'd like to find a CGRect in a UILabel that corresponds to the glyphs of that NSRange. For example, I'd like to find the CGRect that contains the word "dog" in the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." The trick is, the UILabel has multiple lines, and the text is really attributedText, so it's a bit tough to find the exact position of the string. The method that I'd like to write on my UILabel subclass would look something like this: - (CGRect)rectForSubstringWithRange:(NSRange)range; Details, for those who are interested: My goal with this is to be able to create a new UILabel with the exact appearance and position of the UILabel, that I can then animate. I've got the rest figured out, but it's this step in particular that's holding me back at the moment. What I've done to try and solve the issue so far: I'd hoped that with iOS 7, there'd be a bit of Text Kit that would solve this problem, but most every example I've seen with Text Kit focuses on UITextView and UITextField, rather than UILabel. I've seen another question on Stack Overflow here that promises to solve the problem, but the accepted answer is over two years old, and the code doesn't perform well with attributed text. I'd bet that the right answer to this involves one of the following: Using a standard Text Kit method to solve this problem in a single line of code. I'd bet it would involve NSLayoutManager and textContainerForGlyphAtIndex:effectiveRange Writing a complex method that breaks the UILabel into lines, and finds the rect of a glyph within a line, likely using Core Text methods. My current best bet is to take apart @mattt's excellent TTTAttributedLabel, which has a method that finds a glyph at a point - if I invert that, and find the point for a glyph, that might work.     Hello there, I am pretty stumped at the moment. Based on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1045628/can-i-use-win32-com-to-replace-text-inside-a-word-document I was able to code a simple template system that generates word docs out of a template word doc (in Python). My problem is that text in "Text Fields" is not find that way. Even in Word itself there is no option to search everything - you actually have to choose between "Main Document" and "Text Fields".   • jquery XML .html() instead of .text() is not displaying?

    I can't seem to figure out this problem. I am trying to get xml to render html tags. The problem I am having using .text() will display but not recognize any html tags.   • How can I parse/ transform text log data before it gets captured in SCOM 2007 R2?

    I'm pretty much a noob with System Center Operations Manager 2007, and I'm probably missing something pretty basic, but I'm stumped anyway. We're setting up monitoring on some of our servers, and we'd like to capture data from some plain text log files (e.g. DNS debug logs, DHCP logs). It looks to me like I can set up a generic text file monitoring rule and get events captured into the main Ops Manager database, but my understanding is that the whole line of text from the plain text log gets captured as one field. In an ideal world, we'd be able to parse or transform that log file data to make it easier to query later. Is this possible? Is it easy? Do I have to buy expensive 3rd-party software to do it? One more thing: it would be even better if there was a way to stuff this data into the Audit Collection Services (ACS) database instead of the main one, but I'll take what I can get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to auto-generate early bound properties for Entity specific (ie Local) Option Set text values?

    After spending a year working with the Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk namespace, I just discovered yesterday the Entity.FormattedValues property contains the text value for Entity specific (ie Local) Option Set texts. The reason I didn't discover it before, is there is no early bound method of getting the value. i.e. entity.new_myOptionSet is of type OptionSetValue which only contains the int value. You have to call entity.FormattedValues["new_myoptionset"] to get the string text value of the OptionSetValue. Therefore, I'd like to get the crmsrvcutil to auto-generate a text property for local option sets. i.e. Along with Entity.new_myOptionSet being generated as it currently does, Entity.new_myOptionSetText would be generated as well. I've looked into the Microsoft.Crm.Services.Utility.ICodeGenerationService, but that looks like it is mostly for specifying what CodeGenerationType something should be... Is there a way supported way using CrmServiceUtil to add these properties, or am I better off writing a custom app that I can run that can generate these properties as a partial class to the auto-generated ones? Edit - Example of the code that I would like to be generated Currently, whenever I need to access the text value of a OptionSetValue, I use this code: var textValue = OptionSetCache.GetText(service, entity, e => e.New_MyOptionSet); The option set cache will use the entity.LogicalName, and the property expression to determine the name of the option set that I'm asking for. It will then query the SDK using the RetrieveAttriubteRequest, to get a list of the option set int and text values, which it then caches so it doesn't have to hit CRM again. It then looks up the int value of the New_MyOptionSet of the entity and cross references it with the cached list, to get the text value of the OptionSet. Instead of doing all of that, I can just do this (assuming that the entity has been retrieved from the server, and not just populated client side): var textValue = entity.FormattedValues["new_myoptionset"]; but the "new_myoptionset" is no longer early bound. I would like the early bound entity classes that gets generated to also generate an extra "Text" property for OptionSetValue properties that calls the above line, so my entity would have this added to it: public string New_MyOptionSetText { return this.GetFormattedAttributeValue("new_myoptionset"); // this is a protected method on the Entity class itself... }
