• A good architecture is evil? Hardcode forever?

  I have worked in many companies. Most of all reached a big success in their field. Some times I found the code was written by owner or co-owner or the first developer of this company. It was strange from architectural point of view code or awful code styled, or hardcoded and so on. I know a couple of startups, that were grown up and were started from the "one night" code. Is it only way to get success to write code in this way? Why does a code written "on knee" but in time is better than delayed well thought-out one? What about future? Which way is the best: to write a good architecture, code and spend some more time at the startup or to write "fast" and hardcoded one that would be completely (partially) throw out (or maybe wouldn't) after some period of time (or never)?

• Are there any good resources on developing ASP.NET for Windows CE Internet Explorer?

  I've been tasked with creating a web app to be consumed by a mobile device sporting Windows CE 5.0 (and some with Windows CE 4.2). I've found a host of things that seem to work fine in IE6 on my desktop, but fail when rendered in IE for Windows CE. IE6 is bad enough as it is...does it lose any more functionality on an embedded system? Are there quirks that a developer would need to know about? AJAX seems extremely unlikely. JavaScript seems quirky when linking to a .js file. Panels with scrollbars are finicky. Textboxes can't get focus. DefaultButtons on a form don't work. Any help or resources you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

• xcodeproj merge fails when adding new group

  I'm currently using Xcode with Git, and I'm experiencing some troubles during the merge process of my xcodeproj. Developer1 create a new group in Xcode file arborescence the commit and push. Developer2 on an other computer do the same with an other group name, commit and pull(with merge). The xcodeproj of Developer 2 become unreadable with Xcode. But when I create a new file or just drag and drop files from finder to repository, the merge succeed. Did someone has experienced that kind of trouble? • Tracing\profiling instructions

  Hi Y'all. I'd like to statistically profile my C code at the instruction level. I need to know how many additions, multiplications, devides, etc,... I'm performing. This is not your usual run of the mill code profiling requirement. I'm an algorithm developer and I want to estimate the cost of converting my code to hardware implementations. For this, I'm being asked the instruction call breakdown during run-time (parsing the compiled assembly isn't sufficient as it doesn't consider loops in the code). After looking around, It seems VMWare may offer a possible solution, but I still couldn't find the specific feature that will allow me to trace the instruction call stream of my process. Are you aware of any profiling tools which enable this?

• SVNServ deny write access to a directory via wildcard match.

  Hi, We have a requirement that every piece of code that makes it into production will be reviewed by a senior developer. The way I have envisioned this working is by a naming convention for branches that regular developers cannot check code into. Following the SVN recomended directory structure this translates into something like. [project-name]/trunk/ [project-name]/branches/ [project-name]/branches/development-01 [project-name]/branches/development-02 [project-name]/branches/task-increasefontsize [project-name]/branches/release-01 [project-name]/branches/release-02 [project-name]/tags/ So in the authz file I would like to have something like the following [/] @developers = rw [/*/branches/release-*] @developers = r @senior_developers = rw However I can't find any evidence that SVN supports * (or any other wildcard character). Is such a thing possible or do I need a pre-commit hook?

• Migrating from CVS to Mercurial - how to handle cross-repo symbolic links?

  I have a project that is stored in CVS as numerous modules/repositories. In several of the modules the CVS tree has symbolic links to the files in another tree. For example, the internal support tools have links to binary files (DLL, EXE) that are created and stored in the C# module. In all cases, the files are modified only in in the module where the files exist and are treated as read-only in the tree where the symbolic link exists. More often than not, the files are pulled to machines running MSWindows so the use of symbolic links on the developer machine is not an option. My question is this: Is there a mechanism in Mercurial that can provide the same capabilities?

  I'm a front end Flex developer peeking over the wall at html. One of the things I have a hard time with is weak typing in Javascript. I know many developers say they prefer it. How do I stop worrying and learn to love the weak typing? Are there best practices for variable naming that help make var types human readable? Another thing I have trouble with is getting by without my trusted compiler errors and warnings. I'm getting along with firebug. Is there anything else I should have in my toolkit?

• Jenkins and Visual Studio Online integration authentication

  right now I am trying to Setup Continuouse Integration - Delivery for a basic WCF Service, which will be hosted on a Microsoft Azure VM. The Project is Version Controlled through Visual Studio Online. So I installed Jenkins (also on the Azure VM), TFS plugin etc. and started the first Test Build: As Server URL I used "[VSO Adress]/DefaultCollection" and for Login purposes my Microsoft Account (I can Access VSO with that).   Hi. I have a project going on, and I am in charge of the front-end design, whereas my developers will work on the back-end with Ruby on Rails. I do not know Ruby on Rails, and am designing front-end using XHTML, CSS, jQuery, 960.gs CSS Framework. My developer is supposed to take my design and connect the elements of back-end to it, with Ajax too. What are the things that I should know while designing the template/view so that I won't kick my developers' asses with my design? How to help the connecting of elements painless? • How to use Git properly with XCode?

  I have been an iphone developer for a while, and I have recently been including git in my workflow. I have used git settings found on http://shanesbrain.net/2008/7/9/using-xcode-with-git for my workflow so far. Those settings tell git to exclude *.pbxproj from merges? Is there a real reason for doing this? For example, when I add a file to the project and push to origin, my fellow developers will not have that file added to their xcode project when they pull. Then if one of them builds a release this file may not be included. Shouldn't I just let git handle the merges for the project file? Could someone please explain why or why not this file should be in merges and how to properly handle the situation when files are added to the project. Thanks.

• Data Warehouse: One Database or many?

  At my new company, they keep all data associated with the data warehouse, including import, staging, audit, dimension and fact tables, together in the same physical database. I've been a database developer for a number of years now and this consolidation of function and form seems counter to everything I know. It seems to make security, backup/restore and performance management issues more manually intensive. Is this something that is done in the industry? Are there substantial reasons for doing or not doing it? The platform is Netezza. The size is in terabytes, hundreds of millions of rows. What I'm looking to get from answers to this question is a solid understanding of how right or wrong this path is. From your experience, what are the issues I should be focused on arguing if this is a path that will cause trouble for us down the road. If it is no big deal, then I'd like to know that as well.

• What should I do to practice?

  I start a year long industrial placement in September where i will be coding in Java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my Java as in year one of the degree Java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no Java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start I definitely need to get familiar with a professional IDE like NetBeans, opposed to having used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practices should I get more familiar with. I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but I would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a permanent position after I finish my degree.

Here's more details: We currently host an online plugin gallery for our product. Users can upload and download plugins. But users can't easily collaborate on a plugin's development, can't easily report and track bugs on a plugin, can't easily track a plugin's versions or roadmap, etc. Of course, contributors can host their plugin development on github, sourceforge, google code, codeplex, etc. But keeping users on our website has some advantages. Can someone explain please, what does this code mean: data Tree ? = Leaf ? | Fork ? (Tree ?) (Tree ?) rotateR tree = case tree of Fork q (Fork p a b) c -> Fork p a (Fork q b c) As I understand, first line is something like Tree-type declaration (but I don't understand it exactly). Second line includes pattern matching (I don't understand as well why do we need to use pattern matching here). And third line does something absolutely unreadable for non-haskell developer. I've found definition of Fork as fork (f,g) x = (f x, g x) but I can't move further anymore.

• What are the differences between enterprise software/architecture patterns and open source software?

  I am mainly a business app developer and I hear terms like CQRS, ServiceBus, SOA, DDD, BDD, AOP a lot. My question is that do these patterns/practices exist only in the "enterprise" world? In contract to the enterprise world is the open source community. Highly trafficked sites like Digg, LiveJournal whenever there is an article mentioning about how they built/scaled their sites all I am hearing is what open source software (Memcached, NoSQL) they used in order to scale/simplify the way they tackle software problems and they rarely mention those above terms. Is it because they are not as sophisticated as those of enterprise level software (I doubt it)? Or are people just making up those terms/practices/patterns in order to keep them jobs? Or am I confusing myself with differences between software development and internet website scaling?
