• iPhone c++ development / compiler on a non-Mac PC? (Windows? Linux?)

  According to the (in)famous iPhone Developer Program License Agreement change 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). So it is allowed to develop iPhone apps using C++ My questions Is there a compiler / IDE for developing iPhone apps using C++? Is that compiler / IDE available on non Mac environments? (Windows? Linux?) If not, why? I mean an eclipse C++ plugin for iPhone development will be quite popular, or is there already any serious attempt to do that?

  I am mainly a business app developer and I hear terms like CQRS, ServiceBus, SOA, DDD, BDD, AOP a lot. My question is that do these patterns/practices exist only in the "enterprise" world? In contract to the enterprise world is the open source community. Highly trafficked sites like Digg, LiveJournal whenever there is an article mentioning about how they built/scaled their sites all I am hearing is what open source software (Memcached, NoSQL) they used in order to scale/simplify the way they tackle software problems and they rarely mention those above terms. Is it because they are not as sophisticated as those of enterprise level software (I doubt it)? Or are people just making up those terms/practices/patterns in order to keep them jobs? Or am I confusing myself with differences between software development and internet website scaling?

• creating a wordpress dev enviornment and uploading to production

  I am an old school java developer who is considering a using wordpress. I'm used to developing locally on my PC (yeah yeah not even a mac) and then ftping my files up to a production environment on a remote server. My high level review of wordpress gives me the impression that typically there is no concept of lower environments and that all updates occur directly in production. Is this the case? There are tons of technical details what is behind the scene and I feel people enthusiasm with ability to customize widgets as never before. I remember those days when VCL library (Delphi) appeared and there was the same enthusiasm in VCL widgets area. Ability to create VCL controls was nearly the must when you was applying for a job as Delphi developer. This situation continued for several years till professional sophisticated 3'd party UI libraries appeared. Hardly you'll have to create your own VCL widget nowadays. Will WPF widgets enthusiasm die as VCL one?

• Error whenever a java applet is loaded

  Hi. For the past few months or so, I've been getting an error whenever I attempt to use a java applet. I'm getting this error on every browser I use, and I get the error occasionally in linux, too. The java applet loads for roughly 5 seconds or so, then it stops and I get two error messages, stating that an exception occurred (java.io.EOFException). This seems to happen regardless of what website I'm using. Going to the website shows I'm running java 6 update 20, and I get no error. Googling the error turns up nothing useful - I'm not a java developer, so most of the results don't apply to me at all. My question is this. What's causing this error, and what can I do to fix whatever issue is causing it?

• What do you tell people your profession is? [closed]

  My technical title is Member of the Technical Staff, and like you most of you, I design/write code for a living. I can never decide what to answer when someone asks what I do for a living? Software Developer? Software Engineer? [Kernel] Programmer? Computer Scientist? These all seem to have various bad connotations. I guess I like Software Engineer the best, but unfortunately this term has been coopted by people who don't actually code. I made the mistake of taking a 'Software Engineering' class, and realized that I definitely don't want to be associated with people who major in this. Probably this is too subjective, so feel free to community wiki it or whatever, but I think it is a valid question and I would like to hear what others have decided on and their reasoning.

• Anyone run recurring payments in their website? Preferably; Paypal API

  I'm wrapping up my startup and will need to implement Paypal API into my sign up page. Does anyone use recurring payments via Paypal API integrated into their billing? Better yet, guide me to a trustable developer with experience or will I have to use Elance? I need it to go to a welcome/get started screen in their logged in account once they hit the 'create account' button after filling out billing info. I was also wondering, can you leave the CSC (3 digit security code) field out with integration, because it makes things very hard for recurring payments. I'd like to stick with Paypal, as I have been very satisfied with them for a few years now; I already checked out Chargify, authorize.net, etc. I'd love to see someone with something like this set up already to take a look at and ask a few questions.

• How to integrate access control with my ORM in a .net windows form application?

  I am developing a general database query tools, a .Net 3.5 Windows Form application. In order to make the presentation layer is independent of the database layer. I use an ORM framework, XPO from DevExpress. But, I have no access control function built in. I surfed Internet and I found in WCF Data Services, there is an interesting concept, Interceptor, which is following AOP(Aspect Oriented Programming). I am wondering who has such an experience to build access control in ORM. My basic requirement is : It should be a general method and controlled by users in runtime. So any hard coding is not acceptable. It could be based on attribute, database table, or even an external assembly. I am willing to buy a ready solution. According to the idea of AOP, an access control function can be integrated with existing functions easily and nearly not knowingly to the previous developer;) Any suggestions are welcome.

• DotNetNuke adds wrong module to page

  I've deployed DotNetNuke 07.03.02 to Azure using Azure's own wizard - worked fine. Been using DNN for years on personal server without issues. However, when I try to add a module to a page (i.e regular editing) DNN adds the wrong module to the page; seemingly FirstOrDefault from the list of installed modules. I.E, I want to add the "HTML" module (or any other) to a page but instead I get the "Banners" module. If I then uninstall the the Banners module it now adds the "Modules list" module. See below example, where I'm editing the "About" page of my site and have tried to add the HTML module. I hope anyone with insight into DNN (on Azure) can provide info. I am a .Net developer, but have so far had no reason to dig into DNN's inner workings.

• What should i do to practise?

  Hi guys I start a year long industrial placement in september where i will be coding in java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my java as in year one of the degree java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start i definatley need to get familiar with a professional IDE like netbeans, opoosed to havign used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practises should i get more familiar with I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but i would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a perminant position after i finish my degree. (Creation of separate instances for each process versus in process shell. Also version dependency) Frankly speaking, I am totally new to shell. Is there a book available, that will treat these topics; both through managed code and unmanaged code (but mostly towards managed code)? EDIT: I know that technically all these snippets are just javascript scripts that gets evaluated by the browser as if they were defined in the page. I also know that many browsers have got extensions to let you run javascript code (also letting you store scripts somewhere, providing a good editor etc etc). However that's not so practical; I'm not a javascript developer, haven't got firebug installed, and I can't install it anywhere I go. My idea idea is that of collecting the best "mini-scripts" that whoever can just copy and paste in his browser without the need of installing extensions and stuff.

  I'm a PHP Developer and Web Designer. In my work a partner asked me if I could set up a Google Cloud Messaging server. I read the documentation but couldn't find a clear tutorial to set up this server. I got no knowleadge about Java so it makes my job harder. I could "compile" a war file using ant as GCM Demo Tutorial says. But I can't deploy it to my AppEngine server to try it out (It's my first time using AppEngine too).   Hi I followed the commonly-linked tip for reducing an application to the system tray : http://www.developer.com/net/csharp/article.php/3336751 Now it works, but there is still a problem : my application is shown when it starts ; I want it to start directly in the systray. I tried to minimize and hide it in the Load event, but it does nothing. Edit : I could, as a poster suggested, modify the shortcut properties, but I'd rather use code : I don't have complete control over every computer the soft is installed on. I don't want to remove it completely from everywhere except the systray, I just want it to start minimized. Any ideas ? Thanks

  When declaring an Array in PHP, the index's may be created out of order...I.e Array[1] = 1 Array[19] = 2 Array[4] = 3 My question. In creating an array like this, is the length 19 with nulls in between? If I attempted to get Array[3] would it come as undefined or throw an error? Also, how does this affect memory. Would the memory of 3 index's be taken up or 19? Also currently a developer wrote a script with 3 arrays FailedUpdates[] FailedDeletes[] FailedInserts[] Is it more efficient to do it this way, or do it in the case of an associative array controlling several sub arrays "Failures" array(){ ["Updates"] => array(){ [0] => 12 [1] => 41 } ["Deletes"] => array(){ [0] => 122 [1] => 414 [1] => 43 } ["Inserts"] => array(){ [0] => 12 } }

• Oracle data provider hangs IIS worker process when web site is stopped

  We're experiencing a nasty issue in Oracle 11g Release 2 where the w3wp process takes over and entire processor core, and debugging shows that the Oracle data provider is throwing ThreadAbortExceptions infinitely. A developer found this issue by doing the following: 1) Browse a web site that uses Oracle data connections locally (http://localhost/OracleWebSite) - we use IIS, not the ASP.NET dev server, for all of our sites. This ensures that the w3wp process is running and that an active Oracle pool of connections exists in the app pool. 2) Stop the web site (or perform a Rebuild All operation in Visual Studio on the web site in question). Our Oracle connection handling in the affected applications (all Oracle web apps) is well-established and robust. This issue does not occur if we disable connection pooling. This issue does not occur in Oracle 11g Release 1.

• Constantly changing frameworks/APIs - how do we keep up?

  This question isn't really for any specific technology but more of general developer question. We all know from experience that things change. Frameworks evolve, new features are added and stuff gets removed. For example, how might a product using version 1.0 of the "ABC" framework adapt when version 2.0 comes along (ABC could be .NET, Java, Cocoa, or whatever you want)? One solution might be to make the frameworks backward compatible; so that code written for 1.0 will still work in version 2.0 of the framework. Another might be to selectively target only version 1.0 of the framework, but this might leave many fancy new features unused (many .NET 2.0 apps seem to do this) Any thoughts on what we as developers should do as best practice to keep our technologies up to date, whilst not breaking our applications?

I've set the two defines (__WARN & __TRACE) I've included the .h file () I've added some macros, and everything compiles & links fine. But when I run the application (in DEBUG mode), no debug output file is created. What am I missing here?

  Hi guys, I'd like to create a website with similar concept as 'Hot or Not' where users need to sign up to the website and then upload photos. Each photo can be given a description and some additional fields. Other users may comment and rate the photo entries. On top of that, users may favourite/bookmark (and remove) any photo entries and they're accessible via their profile page That's generally how the website will be. Can't decide on a CMS to use Somehow I'm at a crossroad here. I've done some research and found that Joomla has an extension that is able to pull this website off but the thing is I'm not that comfortable with using Joomla. I work with WordPress most of the time, but I can't seem to figure out how would I build this website with WordPress. Would using BuddyPress make it work? Would hiring a plugin developer to customize some plugins work? What do you guys think?

• How do I access a DIV from javascript when using a master page?

  I have a web page that contains a "div" element. On the page, there is javascript to reference the div: document.getElementById('divId'). This was working fine until another developer redesigned the page to use an ASP master page. Now, document.getElementById('divId') returns null. It appears that ASP.net prepends some characters to the names of elements within contents forms when you use a master page. How can I know what the id of the div is when the page loads? Update Allow me to give a specific example to clarify the question: My page had a div with ID divNotice. After changing my page to use a master page, I see when I print the source to the page that renders that the div ID is ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_divNotice. My question is, how am I supposed to know what the div ID is going to be when the framework is done with it?

How do you rank these considerations for you? What does affect you most when you decide to apply pattern? I wonder how many times code reusability (especially for MVP, MVC patterns) was important? For example DAL library often shared between projects (it's reusable) but how often controllers/views (abstracted via interfaces) are reused?
