  • Pitfalls when converting C++/CLI to C++

    I have a library written in C++/CLI and I want to open it up. I want it to be as cross-platform as possible and be able to write bindings to it for other languages to use (Java, Python, etc, etc). To do this, the library needs to be in plain C++ for maximum flexibility. I figure that the logical structures are already there, I just need to replace the .NET libraries it uses with the standard C++ ones. Is this a misguided notion? What should I watch out for when making this transition?

  • C++ conversion operator between types in other libraries

    For convenience, I'd like to be able to cast between two types defined in other libraries. (Specifically, QString from the Qt library and UnicodeString from the ICU library.) Right now, I have created utility functions in a project namespace: namespace MyProject { const icu_44::UnicodeString ToUnicodeString(const QString& value); const QString ToQString(const icu_44::UnicodeString& value); } That's all well and good, but I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way. Ideally, I'd like to be able to convert between them using a cast operator. I do, however, want to retain the explicit nature of the conversion. An implicit conversion should not be possible. Is there a more elegant way to achieve this without modifying the source code of the libraries? Some operator overload syntax, perhaps?

    What should drive the decision behind doing development upon one or more than one framework? For instance, an ERP is (mostly) run on a Windows station. It leverages full access to device's resources, like printers, barcode readers, fingerprint readers and the like. It's usually more responsive and easier do develop with. That being said, some parts of it must be accessed exclusively in self-service mode, by enterprise's customers, suppliers and partners. This could be accomplished with smartphones, tablets, or even desktops running a web browser. What are the economics behind that? Should two team be kept, each one doing work upon its own framework? Or the most permissive framework should be chosen? Should I care something other than HTML technologies? Should I consider native technology for each device?

  • Visual Studio project build as an executable AND a DLL

    In Visual Studio 2008 project properties, Application tab, I can set the Output type to Windows Application, Console Application, or Class Library. I have a project that I want to build as a stand-alone tool (console app) and be available to a couple other tools I'm working on as a class library. The VS GUI only lets me choose one or the other, and building the proj twice all the time is inconvenient. How can I set it up to build both output types in a single build job? Do I write some custom MSBuild .targets file or what?

  • Libraries for making a voice chat application

    My development team is going to build a voice chat application. Our plan is to use a pre-made library just for this purpose, but we haven't found any good one after days of searching the internet, so I thought I would consider a question here! So the question is: What library / project do you recommend? We are deadly serious with this, so it needs to be a good working one. Preferable an open-source one as well. We have been looking at some XMPP libraries and projects, but none seems to be up-to-date, tested and well-documented.

    Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems.     It is possible to make a C# base class accessible only within the library assembly it's compiled into, while making other subclasses that inherit from it public? For example: using System.IO; class BaseOutput: Stream // Hidden base class { protected BaseOutput(Stream o) { ... } ...lots of common methods... } public class MyOutput: BaseOutput // Public subclass { public BaseOutput(Stream o): base(o) { ... } public override int Write(int b) { ... } } Here I'd like the BaseOutput class to be inaccessible to clients of my library, but allow the subclass MyOutput to be completely public. I know that C# does not allow base classes to have more restrictive access than subclasses, but is there some other legal way of achieving the same effect?

  • Where to start when digging into an existing J2EE codebase?

    I work for a company that produces enterprise applications to be used by schools and districts to manage all of their tests and standards data. Their existing application is written in J2EE and is very large. I personally am a seasoned PHP and Ruby = RoR developer and I have been asked to attempt to implement easily added but crucial features to an existing J2EE codebase. I am very familiar with Java SE and know the architecture of a web application well. What I am asking for is, will this suffice for the task ahead and what tips can you give me in digging into the code base and actually efficiently adding these new features? Is there anything important I need to know before beginning and what can I expect in terms of problems and issues coming from a Java SE, PHP, RoR background? Time isn't too much of an issue, I should have plenty of time to familiarize myself with J2EE.Please also note, syntax will not be a problem here.

  • compiling QGIS Plugin using make

    On a fresh mac os x 10.8 install, i've Quantum GIS Installed from Kingchaos binaries and running fine. I'm trying to develop a plugin for QGIS, and using Plugin Builder. The skel that Plugin Builder, produces, should work off-the-shelf, but it does not compile using the makefile. Somewhere python can't find (pyuic.py), and it searches for (/Users/kyngchaos/...), path.     I have a source code of a library which has a lot of strange IF, ELSE, FOR, etc. macros for all common C-keywords instead of using just usual if,else,for,while keywords. These macros are defined like this: #define IF( a) if( increment_if(), a) where increment_if() function is defined so: static __inline void increment_if( void) { // If the "IF" operator comes just after an "ELSE", its counter // must not be incremented. ... //implementation } I don't really understand, what is the purpose of such macros? This library is for a real-time application and I suppose that using such macros must slow-down an application.

    Guys, I have been looking for a portable method to digitally sign arbitrary text which can be placed in a document and distributed while maintaining its verifiable origin. Here is an example: a = 'some text' a.sign(<private key>) # => <some signature in ASCII format> The contents of a can now be distributed freely. If a receiver wants to check the validity of said text they can do the following: b = 'some text' b.valid(<public key>, <signature supplied with text>) # => true/false Is there any library out there that already offers this kind of functionality?   • Even lighter than SQLite

    I've been looking for a C++ SQL library implementation that is simple to hook in like SQLite, but faster and smaller. My projects are in games development and there's definitely a cutoff point between needing to pass the ACID test and wanting some extreme performance. I'm willing to move away from SQL string style queries, allowing it to be code driven, but I haven't found anything out there that provides SQL like flexibility while also preferring performance over the ACID test. I don't want to go reinventing the wheel, and the idea of implementing an SQL library on my own is quite daunting, even if it's only going to be simple subset of all the calls you could make. I need the basic commands (SELECT, MODIFY, DELETE, INSERT, with JOIN, and WHERE), not data operations (like sorting, min, max, count) and don't need the database to be atomic, or even enforce consistency (I can use a real SQL service while I'm testing and debugging).

  • adding org.springframework.test package to spring-2.5.6-SEC01.jar in netbeans

    This is probably very simple, however I can't get this to work. I want to use AbstractDependencyInjectionSpringContextTest class which is in org.springframework.test package. This package is not included in Netbeans' spring library, so I want to add it. So what I have tried so far is: copy and paste "test" directory (downloaded from spring) into the Netbeans' spring-2.5.6-SEC01.jar file (copy it to org.springframework directory in that jar so I can use org.springframework.test to import it). If I go to project/libraries in Netbeans it is there, but when I try to import org.springframework.test.*; the autocomplition doesn't give me the option to choose test directory from org.soringframework package. create a new library which points to "test" directory and add it to the project- as there is no any jar file in "test" I'm not sure what path should I use to import it. I'm pretty sure this is something very simple but I'm still a novice and can't figure this out.

For example: Following could be the content of the Word Document {Address} {PhoneNumber} Hello {Name}, How are you doing? In C# I would like to do something like this to replace all the placeholders in the Word document: using(WordDocument doc = WordDocument.Load("Mail.docx")){ var person = new {Name = "John Smith", Address="42 Wallaby Way, Sydney", PhoneNumber="555-555-5555"}; doc.Template(person); doc.Print(); } The resulting document would look like this: 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney 555-555-5555 Hello John Smith, How are you doing? Any libraries out there (preferably free) that let's me do this? Edit: I am not asking you to find anything that let's me do this. If that was the case, I would do a Google search by myself. Honestly, all I am asking is "has anybody used a library in the past to do this exact thing."
