• Do c++ templates make programs slow ?

  Hi, I have heard from many people that usage of templates make the code slow. Is it really true. I'm currently building a library. There are places where if templates are not created, it would result in code management problem. As of now I can think two solutions to this problem: o use #defines o Use templates and define all possible types in the header file/library itself but do not allow end user to make template instances. e.g. typedef Graph GraphI32; etc. Is there anyway, to restrict user from creating various template instances on their own. Help on above queries would be highly regarded.

• java - reduce external jar file size

  Hi all, still learning, so be patient :) I've developed a module for a Java project. The module depends on external library (fastutil). the problem is, the fastutil.jar file is a couple of times heavier than the whole project itself (14 MB). I only use a tiny subset of the classes from the library. the module is now finished, and no-one is likely to extend it in future. is there a way I could extract only the relevant class to some fastutil_small.jar so that others don't have to download all this extra weight? there's probably a simple answer to this, but as I said, I still consider myself a noob. • Compress small strings, With what to create external dictionary?

  I want to compress much small strings (about 75-100 length c# string). At the time the dictionary is created I already know all short strings (nearly a trillion). There will no additional short strings in future. I need to extra exactly one string without decompress other strings. Now I am looking for a library or the best way to do the following: Create a dictionary using all strings I have Using this dictionary to compress each string a way to compress one string using the dictionary from 1. I found a good related question, but this is not c# specific. Maybe there is something for c# I do not know, or a fancy library or someone has already done that. That is the reason I ask this question.

• Singleton design potential leak

  I have downloaded a library off of github and have noticed that in the main singleton of the library there is a possible leak in this bit of code: +(DDGameKitHelper*) sharedGameKitHelper { @synchronized(self) { if (instanceOfGameKitHelper == nil) { [[DDGameKitHelper alloc] init]; } return instanceOfGameKitHelper; } return nil; } Now obviously there is no release or autorelease anywhere so I must do it but how and in what way properly? I have looked at various Singleton design patterns on the Internet and they just assign, in this case, instanceOfGameKitHelper to the alloc and init line. Anyway how would I properly fix this? • What is the starting point for Ubuntu app development? [closed]

  I'm thinking of developing software for Ubuntu and other related Linux-based distros (like Linux Mint). But currently am at a loss for where to start. Would learning Python be enough/good? And what are the other things I should know about before starting this kind of developing? And will I be able to publish my apps to a software store like Ubuntu store even if I am from outside USA/UK? If not, what are the options I have to make my apps reach the audience? As a lot of users had asked, I intend to build applications only for Linux (I'm thinking of Gnome) that will be a bit business and enterprise oriented. Currently I am an Oracle certified Java developer in J2SE and J2ME. And I know Python a bit.

  I'm using the PHP markdown library: http://michelf.com/projects/php-markdown/ and the Javascript markdown library: http://attacklab.net/showdown/ I want to disallow all HTML, both the versions of markdown seem to allow it indiscriminately. My first attempt was simply to escape all html entities before feeding into markdown. However this also escapes the <hyperlink> and <email> syntax, which is very useful. I'd like to escape all HTML (not remove) but preserve all markdown syntax.

  I have mostly been experimenting with ubuntu but recently was using a Red Hat Enterprise system and was surprised at a difference I found setting and displaying env variables. In ubuntu I might have an interaction like this: acomber@mail:~$ export MY_VAR=i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo $MY_VAR i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo "$MY_VAR" i686-linux But on RHEL: acomber@mail:~$ export MY_VAR=i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo $MY_VAR acomber@mail:~$ echo "$MY_VAR" i686-linux I know this is a ubuntu forum but why the difference? Why do I need to enclose in quotes on RH? There are no spaces in the variable name?

However, if I put a script within /etc/init.d that starts abc during the boot process (i.e. before to start the GUI), using Java from abc still is fine, but using Go, NodeJS or Scala doesn't work anymore. Then, I guess that during the boot process, the script within /etc/init.d that starts abc is executed before that the different environment variables set within /etc/sudoers, /etc/environment and /etc/login.defs are loaded. So, my question is: how to force the environment variables to be loaded before that my script starting abc is launched? Any help and advice on this topic would be trully appreciated. TIA. Cheers. • Cannot Start MySQL Server on Fresh MAMP Install

  I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.2 on my Macbook Pro. I can get the apache server to start, but not the mysql server, on both the default apache and default MAMP ports. When I try to go to my start page, I get the message "Error: Could not connect to MySQL server!" . • bash: per-command history. How does it work?

  OK. I have an old G5 running Leopard and a Dell running Ubuntu 10.04 at home and a MacPro also running Leopard at work. I use Terminal.app/bash a lot. On my home G5 it exhibits a nice feature: using ? to navigate history I get the last command starting with the few letters that I've typed. This is what I mean (| represents the caret): $ ssh user@server $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history $ ss| So, I've typed the two first letters of "ssh", hitting ? results in this: $ ssh user@server instead of this, which is the behaviour I get everywhere else : $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history If I keep on hitting ? or ?, I can navigate through the history of ssh like this: $ ssh otheruser@otherserver $ ssh user@server $ ssh yetanotheruser@yetanotherserver It works the same for any command like cat, vim or whatever. That's really cool. Except that I have no idea how to mimic this behaviour on my other machines.
