• Oracle Number One in Supply Chain Planning

  Something nice to write home about!  Saw this accomplishment and worth promoting, with special Congrats to the VCP team. Read on: Summary: Oracle is the #1 player in  Supply Chain Planning  according to research firm ARC Advisory Group Details: The report (Source: ARC Advisory Group, “Supply Chain Planning Worldwide Outlook, Market Analysis and Forecast through 2016,” Clint Reiser, Steve Banker), gives Oracle 21.1% of revenue share, compared to SAP, who was second at 18.6%. JDA Software, Aspen, Logility, and Infor were the next players in the market. The total market was valued at $1.506B. ARC counts Software (new license and upgrades), Implementation Services, Maintenance and Support, and SaaS, in its definition. ARC defines supply chain planning to include four key application areas: Extended SCP, Manufacturing Planning, Inventory/Distribution Planning, and Demand Management. Extended SCP consists of Network Design, Capable to Promise, SCP Composites, and Extended Supply Chain BI software. In the report, ARC further gives Oracle the number one spot in both Software Revenues and Services Revenues subsegments, as well as in many vertical areas such as Government, Electronics and Electrical, Medical Products, Pharmaceutical, and Wholesale/Distribution. ARC also issued a forecast, that predicts SCP revenue to grow from $1.506B in 2011 to $2.172B in 2016, with a CAGR of 7.6%. • Arbitrary Rotation about a Sphere

  I'm coding a mechanic which allows a user to move around the surface of a sphere. The position on the sphere is currently stored as theta and phi, where theta is the angle between the z-axis and the xz projection of the current position (i.e. rotation about the y axis), and phi is the angle from the y-axis to the position. I explained that poorly, but it is essentially theta = yaw, phi = pitch Vector3 position = new Vector3(0,0,1); position.X = (float)Math.Sin(phi) * (float)Math.Sin(theta); position.Y = (float)Math.Sin(phi) * (float)Math.Cos(theta); position.Z = (float)Math.Cos(phi); position *= r; I believe this is accurate, however I could be wrong. I need to be able to move in an arbitrary pseudo two dimensional direction around the surface of a sphere at the origin of world space with radius r. For example, holding W should move around the sphere in an upwards direction relative to the orientation of the player. I believe I should be using a Quaternion to represent the position/orientation on the sphere, but I can't think of the correct way of doing it. Spherical geometry is not my strong suit. • [MINI HOW-TO] Repair Missing External Hard Drive Database Error in WHS

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Suitability of ground fog using layered alpha quads?

  A layered approach would use a series of massive alpha-textured quads arranged parallel to the ground, intersecting all intervening terrain geometry, to provide the illusion of ground fog quite effectively from high up, looking down, and somewhat less effectively when inside the fog and looking toward the horizon (see image below). Alternatively, a shader-heavy approach would instead calculate density as function of view distance into the ground fog substrate, and output the fragment value based on that. Without having to performance-test each approach myself, I would like first to hear others' experiences (not speculation!) on what sort of performance impact the layered alpha texture approach is likely to have. I ask specifically due to the oft-cited impacts of overdraw (not sure how fill-rate bound your average desktop system is). A list of games using this approach, particularly older games, would be immensely useful: if this was viable on pre DX9/OpenGL2 hardware, it is likely to work fine for me. One big question is in regards to this sort of effect: (Image credit goes to Lume of lume.com) Notice how the vertical fog gradation is continuous / smooth. OTOH, using textured quad layers, I can only assume that layers would be mighty obvious when walking through them -- the more sparse they were, the more obvious this would be. This is in contrast to where fog planes are aligned to face the player every frame, where this coarseness would be much less obvious.

• Octree implementation for fustrum culling

  I'm learning modern (=3.1) OpenGL by coding a 3D turn based strategy game, using C++. The maps are composed of 100x90 3D hexagon tiles that range from 50 to 600 tris (20 different types) + any player units on those tiles. My current rendering technique involves sorting meshes by shaders they use (minimizing state changes) and then calling glDrawElementsInstanced() for drawing. Still get solid 16.6 ms/frame on my GTX 560Ti machine but the game struggles (45.45 ms/frame) on an old 8600GT card. I'm certain that using an octree and fustrum culling will help me here, but I have a few questions before I start implementing it: Is it OK for an octree node to have multiple meshes in it (e.g. can a soldier and the hex tile he's standing on end up in the same octree node)? How is one supposed to treat changes in object postion (e.g. several units are moving 3 hexes down)? I can't seem to find good a explanation on how to do it. As I've noticed, soting meshes by shaders is a really good way to save GPU. If I put node contents into, let's say, std::list and sort it before rendering, do you think I would gain any performance, or would it just create overhead on CPU's end? I know that this sounds like early optimization and implementing + testing would be the best way to find out, but perhaps someone knows from experience?

• Need database selection advise

  I know this is considered a bad question since there is no correct answer, but I need to decide on a database for embedded linux (DaVinci 368 based) hardware and I've never had to produce a design with a database before. Each record will probably contain less than 1000 images with associated alpha-numeric data and the mass storage will be some kind of flash drive. Only one user needs access to the data at a time. MySQL claims to be "The world's most popular open source database" but SQLite claims to be "the most widely deployed SQL database engine in the world." Perhaps there is another that is also the best in the world? Which is easiest to use for a database newbie? Should I just flip a coin? Does it really matter which one I pick? Do I even need to use a database software package or should I roll my own? I won't need bells and whistles like sorting, but I'll probably need to delete the oldest records to make room for new ones if the storage fills up.

  We have just migrated our systems from Windows to Ubuntu. We have more than 50 systems previously running Windows XP & Windows 7. After the release of 12.04 we decided to switch to Ubuntu. While we were installing Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium 4 systems we have faced some issues. We tried it with a USB flash driver & CD. The typical configuration of the system is as follows: Pentium 4 with HT & 512 MB RAM, 40/80 GB IDE / SATA HDD. In windows there were several partitions and data on all the drives in all the systems. We have addressed this by taking backup of the C: drive on other drives & while installing Ubuntu we have just deleted & the C drive & recreated Linux partitions as follows - /root , /Boot, /Home & Swap.(in 10 GB) The problem is that the Linux gets installed without any error. However when I restart the system after the installation the system hangs in while detecting the HDD in BIOS and the system fails to start until I remove the HDD. When I installed the previous Ubuntu version it worked fine, without any hassle. Also if we install Ubuntu 12.04 on same HDD on any other higher capacity system & reconnected to old system it works fine. How can I fix this problem? Also, is there is any Antivirus which will give me real time protection on ubuntu 11 & higher versions with both 32 & 64 Bits?

• game multiplayer service development

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game. I've looked at a number of multiplayer services(player.io, playphone, gamespy, and others) but nothing really hits the mark. They are missing features, lack platform support or cost too much. What I'm looking for is a simple poor man's version of steam or xbox live. Not the game marketplace side of those two but the multiplayer services. User accounts, profiles, presence info, friends, game stats, invites, on/offline messaging. Basically I'm looking for a unified multiplayer platform for all my games across devices. Since I can't find what I'm planning to roll my own piece by piece. I plan to save on server resources by making most of the communication p2p. Things like game data and voice chat can be handled between peers and the server keeps track of user presence and only send updates when needed or requested. I know this runs the risk of cheating but that isn't a concern right now. I plan to run this on a Amazon ec2 micro server for development then move to a small to large instance when finished. I figure user accounts would be the simplest to start with. Users can create accounts online or using in game dialog, login/out, change profile info. The user can access this info online or in game. I will need user authentication and secure communication between server and client. I figure all info will be stored in a database but I dont know how it can be stored securely and accessed from webserver and game services. I would appreciate and links to tutorials, info or advice anyone could provide to get me started. Any programming language is fine but I plan to use c# on the server and c/c++ on devices. I would like to get started right away but I'm in no hurry to get it finished just yet. If you know of a service that already fits my requirements please let me know.

• Acceptable sound quality: stereo needed for an Android game?

  I have various simple short sound effects (damage sound, dying sound, thunderbolt, fanfare, breaking) for a game that is developed for Android currently. I use OGG files: 96kbps VBR, 44.1KHz, 2 channels (that means stereo, right?). I read the other stackexchange topics about "acceptable sound quality", but they're too general, address too many things. My experience is that even with 80kbps, my effects sound OK. But I tested it on a limited number of Android devices (including a Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo and a HTC Desire HD). My questions: For mobile phones and tablets, generally, what parameters are recommended? Won't my 80kbps sounds be bad on a newer device (such as a modern tablet)? I don't hear any difference between stereo and mono (2 channels vs. 1 channel, right?), is there any noticeable difference at all for mobile phones / tablets? (in terms of the player experience) May it worth it at all? I assume that stereo sounds take much more in memory (when they're decoded to PCM), despite of the fact that the compressed OGG size is practically the same. Reacting to Roy T.'s great comment: Actually, I couldn't measure the PCM size (Android decodes OGG internally), but I thought that stereo will take more space than mono when uncompressed After throwing out one of the WAV channels in Audacity, and re-exporting it: The new WAV file size is half than before The OGG file size is practically the same as before The sound effects and game music was recorded by my friend who is an experienced hobby musician/composer, but he knows little about computers & software so he just gave me some high-quality WAV files generated via his hardware.These were stereo, but if I check them in Audacity, both channels appear to be exactly the same.Can I consider them the same (= moving to mono), or might there be some unnoticeable differences to the human eye?

  Hello, I would like to know the flow for making modern 2D game artwork. How are the assets made nowadays? Bitmap? Vector-based? Hand-drawn and painted? Drawn digitally? Modeled in 3D and exported to bitmaps? I would like some information on programs as well, for fine looking art. Why does Flash's vector art style look good in most games? How do I make equivalent graphics with external tools? Or equaly good and not vector-based, anyway. Any special hints for animating? An answer oriented towards a one-man-army indie developer with little experience but some artistic sense would be appreciated! Not a complete dummy with paint programs, but also not a master at all, just need efficient ways to achieve results. Thanks. • How to evaluate a user against optimal performance?

  I have trouble coming up with a system of assigning a rating to player's performance. Well, technically there is is a trivial rating system, but I don't like it because it would mean assigning negative scores, which I think most players will be discouraged by. The problem is that I only know the ideal number of actions to get the desired result. The worst case is infinite number of actions, so there is no obvious scale. The trivial way I referred to above is to take score = (#optimal-moves - #players-moves), with ideal score being zero. However, psychologically people like big numbers. No one wants to win by getting a mark of 0. I wonder if there is a system that someone else has come up with before to solve this problem? Essentially I wish to score the players based on: How close they've come to the ideal solution. Different challenges will have different optimal number of actions, so the scoring system needs to take that into account, e.g. Challenge 1 - max 10 points, Challenge 2 - max 20 points. I don't mind giving the players negative scores if they've performed exceptionally badly, I just don't want all scores to be <=0

• The Case of the Invisible Training Resource

  I’ve been at this programming business longer than I would like to admit. For that reason I am always looking for new training resources as anyone in this business knows all too well. I’ve looked at AppDev (way too expensive for my meager budget), LearnVisualStudio (I have a lifetime subscription), and several others. What appears to be a new version of AppDev called LearnDevNow has some good material and so it goes. So what does all this have to do with the title? I’ve been using Adobe’s Flex Builder 3 and now their latest Flash Builder 4 (a renaming of the Adobe Flex development environment). One of the offered perks on registering was a month’s subscription to Lynda.com. My first reaction was “What the heck is Lynda.com?” but I chose it and signed up. What a surprise I was in for. I’d never heard of them before but discovered one of the most comprehensive training resources I’ve ever seen – and all for $ 34.95 a month in the version that offers Exercise files. They do have a heavy focus on Adobe products but also cover a lot of Microsoft material. What bothered me is that in the time I’ve been in this business I’d never heard of them! ; Thus the allusion to “The Invisible Training Resource.” Not only do they offer beginner and in depth training but the syllabus and the instructors are some of the best I’ve seen in the industry. So I just feel that more folks need to know about this organization. If you need training in the venues they offer I can attest to the fact that they offer some of the best training available in this industry in my humble opinion. You really owe it to yourself to check out Lynda.com.

• Steam (via Wine) crashes after login - any troubleshooting tips?

  The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (I think..what's the best way to verify? uname only displays Linux) which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence. wine-1.3.14 I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. How do I identify if the problem is with wine or steam or the video card driver, or what?
