  • Should I be concerned about performance with connections to multiple databases?

    I have a PHP app that is running on an Apache server with MySQL databases. Based on the subdomain that users access, I am connecting them to a database (sub1.domain.com connects to database_sub1 and sub2.domain.com connects to database_sub2). Right now there are 10 subdomain-database combos, but that number could potentially grow to well over 100. So, is this a bad thing? Considering my situation, is myslq_pconnect a better way to go?     In nowadays the PostgreSQL offers plenty of procedural languages: pl/pgsql, pl/perl, etc Are there any difference in the speed/memory consumption in procedures written in different languages? Does anybody have done any test? Is it true that to use the native pl/pgsql is the most correct choice? How the procedure written in C++ and compiled into loadable module differs in all parameter w.r.t. the user function written with pl/* languages?

    In my php application, I'm using $_SESSION to track whether a user is logged in. If a user leaves any page on my site at http://mysite.com and goes to http://someotherwebsite.com, I want to automatically log them out, such that if they return to any page on http://mysite.com, they need to login again. Is there an easy way to do this?

    Hi, I have page called filedownload.aspx , it contains grid and in grid they are three columns and in one of the column there is button which says Download , when user clicks on that button it picks file id and gives the download box to user with three options Open save and cancel . Now the problem is that when user clicks on the download button in grid it gives this ERROR: INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DOWNLOAD FILEDOWNLOAD.ASPX FROM ABC.XYZ.COM (MY URL EXAMPLE) INTERNET EXPLORER WAS NOT ABLE TO OPEN THIS SITE .THE REQUEST SITE IS EITHER UNAVAILABLE OR CANNOT BE FOUND . ONE MORE THING IS THT RECENTLY WE IMPLEMENTED SSL AND FROM HTTP WE MOVE TO HTTPS WITH NAME CHANGE IN URL ALSO BFEORE IT WAS AND NOW ITS . NOW WHEN I CHANGE THE URL TO OLD ONE THE PAGE IS WORKING FINE . CAN ANYONE HELP ME ON THIS ? THANKS, SMARTDEV

    I'd like to know what people consider best practice for securing the Admin sections of websites, specifically from an authentication/access point of view. Of course there are obvious things, such as using SSL and logging all access, but I'm wondering just where above these basic steps people consider the bar to be set. For example: Are you just relying on the same authentication mechanism that you use for normal users? If not, what? Are you running the Admin section in the same 'application domain'?   • What the performance of Festival TTS vs FreeTTS on windows platforms?

    9 hours ago I had the wonderful idea to build up from scratch Festival TTS on Windows. In the meanwhile, and in less than 30 minutes, I build up the same source code on Linux, but only because tons of development tools were already installed :D Also this morning I downloaded FreeTTS. I started a simple testing project in less of 10 minutes, thanks to the Java power :D. Unfortunately FreeTTS does not provide immediate support for international mbrola languages, so this morning I thinked "it needs too much work"... Backing to Festival TTS on Windows, after many obstacles, and tons of wrong downloads, CYGWIN before, then "make" and other exotic C++ tools "forgotten" in the installation of CYGWIN, then Visual Studio 2008, then Windows Platform SDK 2008, but it lacks of System.h, so just now I am downloading Windows Server Platform SDK 2003, etc... So now, as I am yet here without having compiled a single line of damned C-- code, my question is: at least Festival TTS is a good choice on Windows for Java development?

    Hi all I am using the markitup editor to get the value for one of my fields and storing it a sql server 2008 db. Now I guess the problem is people having script tags and javascript in the editor and injecting malicious scripts and I have my validate input turned false. So can anyone suggest me a way to write a custom validation method that maybe checks for script tags and removes them...or just guide me through the steps i need to do ?...also are there other things also that I should be worried about..?

    I started getting into reading design blogs a little while ago, and it seemed that @font-face got really popular sometime late last year, or something like that, because I was under the impression that it was a new emerging feature of the web. But then I saw that Internet Explorer has had it since IE4 (with some conversion). So is it common to see @font-face online nowadays? Sould I have anything in mind with respect to accessibility, legality, or rendering before I do something like this? I saw that Hulu.com renders fonts with Canvas and a javascript called "cufon."

  • Better performance to Query the DB or Cache small result sets?

    Say I need to populate 4 or 5 dropdowns w/ items from a database. Each drop down will have < 15 items in it. These items almost never change. Now I could query the DB each time the page is accessed or I could grab the values from a custom class that would check to see if they already exist in ASP.Net's cache and only if they don't query the DB to update the cache. It's trivial for me to write but I'm unsure if the performace would be better or not. I think it would be (although not likely anything huge). What do you think?

    After learning good amount of c++, i'm now into STL containers and algorithms template library, my major concerns are, 1) Is this library same across different platforms like MS, linux n other os? 2) will quality or efficiency of program c++ module decrease with more use of STL containers and algorithms, i think i can't customize it to all needs. 3) Is this template library good to use in linux system programming, kernel modules? 4) lastly can i use this in programming contests, because it relives a lot of coding and pressure off shoulders.

    I am looking for general opinions and suggestions about the site in whole. Its ok I don't mind hearing where I went wrong on anything. I'm still learning. All tips and pointers on any subject relating are highly welcome. If you are going to make a suggestion and post a snippet or code please explain how it works in detail. The site was design as a interface to display the labs I have to do in my college (the labs are all basic things that I'm way beyond). So I decided to take it all to the next level with this.
