• Python install issue on Mac OS X

  I have been using the standard python that comes with OS X Lion (2.7.2) but I wanted to build a UCS-4 version to handle 4-byte unicode characters better. I had already installed pip and packages like pytz, virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper, etc., and these are installed in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages. My $PATH is /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin. To build a new version of python on the machine (outside of any project specific virtual environments, that will come later), I followed the instructions on this article and managed to build it in /usr/local/bin. The problem is that when I launched a new bash window, I got the following virtualenvwrapper error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader virtualenvwrapper.sh: There was a problem running the initialization hooks. If Python could not import the module virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader, check that virtualenv has been installed for VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/local/bin/python and that PATH is set properly. The instructions said to move /usr/local/bin to the top of the /etc/paths file, and since then I've noticed some strange issues. I installed pip into /usr/local/bin and now I have assumed that since I'm working in /usr/local/bin, and the newly installed python's site packages is now located in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, when I do pip freeze, it should be empty as nothing is installed there yet. However, pip freeze still reports things installed in the old (OS X) site-packages folder. Here's some info after the build: $ which python /usr/local/bin/python $ which pip /usr/local/bin/pip $ echo $PATH /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin When I uninstall a python package with pip, it removes it from the old site-packages folder as expected. When I install it again, instead of installing it in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, it installs it in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages (verified by attempting to install it again and receiving Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): pytz in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages ). How is it getting that path for the old site-packages folder? Why won't it install it in the correct location for the python install it's using? I'm getting several other issues since promoting /usr/local/bin but I think if I understand this I'll be able to get somewhere. Can anyone see what's happening? If you need any more info I'll be happy to provide it.

• JDBCRealm can't find sqlite file

  My authentication fails with java.sql.SQLException: no such table: credentials where credentials is the name of the user/password table. I have checked the db file and the table is there. I think you also get this error when sqlite jdbc can't even find the file. I am specifying my realm in a META-INF/context.xml file. Is there any trick to getting the path right? I have tried just about everything I can think of.

• Windows 7 - Sharing a connection through WiFi?

  Hi folks, I have a PC with Win7 and an iPod touch. Win7 is connected to the internet through a 3G dongle, I have set up an Ad Hoc wifi network and ticked "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection". I have connected to both networks, but I'm getting "No Internet access" as access type for the Ad Hoc connection. Any ideas?

I only started using lucid recently, and found out about upstart when my script stopped working. The script depends on mysql server, which unlike in older versions, now uses upstart. Migrating my script to upstart isn't an alternative for now. I would like to continue using my sysvinit, but how do I make sure it starts after mysql? Rgds, Eli

  Hi. We ghosted our old Windows 2003 drive to a new 1TB one, and connected through new PCI SATA card. The server fails to boot with error 1962: Boot sector not found. When we connect the drive directly to motherboard, it boots fine, so the problem is probably in getting BIOS boot from the SATA card. Does anyone know how to do it? Thanks.

• Idling CPU at 65C, re-place or re-paste?

  Replaced Graphics card because screen would go black at a certain temp while gaming, but sound would stay on (but locked up). Then with replacement card whole PC shuts off during gaming now because the CPU is overheating. Note: CPU is only supposed to go up to 71C max according to manufacturer and it goes well over upon load. System Temp: 30C TL;DR: Idling CPU at 65C, started to shut down due to overheating, re-place (CPU, or CPU and Motherboard) or re-paste?

• Impossible to create/format install window 7 on unpartioned HD

  Hi guys i am getting nut reinstalling windows 7 on one of those Acer aspire all-in-one... The original OS(windows professional x64) was not starting, after the initial screen the bios was prompted. So step 1: i tried to access the system partition and reinstall everything but could not get at the point step 2: i set the bios to native ide and i tried to insert my original copy of windows professional and do a clean installation, but it does not allow me to format/create other partion form the installation mask step 3: my BAD, i tried to install ubuntu and i clean the whole hard drive, i was getting an error at some point during installation so i decided to get back to windows step 4: Windows 7 again, at the disk screen of the windows installation i entered into the prompt and played around with DISKPART... -i listed the disk and the HD was disk 0. -i selected disk 0. -i CLEAN disk 0 successfully. -i tried to create a CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY but gave an error cache corrupt and disk not up-to-date (after i try to create a partiton in disk 0 it disappear when i try LIST DISK and i have to restart before he can list DISK 0 again, RESCAN did not worked). -tried CLEAN ALL(2 hours) and succeeded. -try again to create primary partition and failed, same errors -try to install my old copy of windows xP pro and it seems to work, it create a partition, format(only quick worked, slow mode was at 0% after 1 hour so i stop), it start installing and around 90% installation said it could not copy a file and he stop -back on windows 7 again, it says that the hard drive has 490+gb unpartitioned but won't create a partition and format. -i tried again DISKPART as i though i messed up with the MBR when i installed ubuntu, so i did all of the instruction below http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 the errors were: on bootsect: the systne partiton was not found, Data error cyclic redundancy check on bootrec /FixMbr: A device attached to the system is not functioning but did not worked, and still can not partiton/format/install on a blank HD i tried some bootable clean disk tool and start infinite loop on the same errors the bios setting are: sata: native ide. if i put AHCL(or something like that does not load the HD and the DVD). quick start/quite start: disabled. It must have permission to read /etc/aliases and read and write /var/lib/mailman/data/aliases. • Optimize windows 2008 performance

  Hello, I have windows server 2008 sp2 installed as virtual machine on my personal laptop. I use it only for source control (visual svn) and continuous integration (teamcity). As the virtual machine resources are limited I'd like to optimize it's performance by disabling services and features that are not necessary for my purposes. Can anyone recommend where to start or provide with tips for getting better performance. Thanks.

• High Availability with 2 servers?

  Is it possible to have a high availability setup with 2 servers? Running Windows Web Server 2008 and MSSQL Web Edition (as I know Express isn't supported)? Getting to the point where our one dedicated server needs scaled out and going to a second server already more than doubles the cost as need to use Web Edition rather than Express (db is only 500MB).
