  • Delphi connection to OpenEdge Progress-4GL Database

    Folks: Has anyone had success connecting to a Progress-4GL database with Delphi?   I've been unable to establish any connection with the ODBC driver provided by the vendor (Progress OpenEdge 10.1C Driver). I've entered (what I believe are) the right parameters, but keep on getting an error whenever I test the connection: "[DataDirect][ODBC Progress OpenEdge Wire Protocol driver] Socket closed." Background: I've been tasked to re-design a 13-year-old application, but the original programmer did not provide any supporting documents, passwords, configuration setup, etc. (I'm on my own)!   To make things worse, online help and useful documentation about Progress is scarce (I had never heard about this database until now). I want to examine the existing data, maybe create an ERD to familiarize myself with the schema, but I can't even access the data outside of the OpenEdge code. Any help is appreciated!

  • Session Id in url and/or cookie? [closed]

    Most people advice against rewriting every (internal) url to include the sessionId (both GET and POST). The standard argument against it seems to be:   If an attacker gets hold of the sessionId, they can hijack the session.   With the sessionId in the url, it easily leaks to the attacker (by referer etc.) But what if you put the sessionId in both an (encrypted) cookie and the url. if the sessionId in either the cookie or the url is missing or if they do not match, decline the request. Let's pretend the website in question is free of xss holes, the cookie encryption is strong enough, etc. etc. Then what is the increased risk of rewriting every url to include the sessionId? UPDATE: @Casper That is a very good point. so up to now there are 2 reasons: bad for search engines / SEO if used in public part of the website can cause trouble when users post an url with a session Id on a forum, send it trough email or bookmark the page apart from the:   It increases the security risk, but it is not clear what the increased risk is. some background info: I've a website that offers blog-like service to travellers. I cannot be sure cookies work nor can I require cookies to work. Most computers in internet cafes are old and not (even close to) up-to-date. The user has no control over them and the connection can be very unreliable for some more 'off the beaten path' locations. Binding the session to an IP-address is not possible, some places use load-balancing proxies with multiple IP addresses. (and from China there is The Great Firewall). Upon receiving the first cookie back, I flag cookies as mandatory. However, if the cookie was flagged as mandatory but not there, I ask for their password once more, knowing their session from the url. (Also cookies have a 1 time token in them, but that's not the point of this question). UPDATE 2: The conclusion seems to be that there are no extra *security* issues when you expose you session id trough the URL while also keeping a copy of the session id in an encrypted cookie.   • Is it possible to connect iPhones through NAT traversal techniques over 3G for peer 2 peer gaming

    Is it possible to connect an iPhone to another iPhone or any other network client talking that game's protocol. I was thinking that I could use the same NAT Traversal technique used in the XBox 360 to host games on users XBox's through Firewalls. For NAT traversal to work effectively I'd have to have a central server that would allow clients to "broadcast" that they were hosting so that another client could initiate the NAT connection. In the link provided this is called relaying. Is there any inherent limitation of the US AT&T 3G network that will block the NAT traversal techniques (would you be limited to wifi firewall NAT traversal)?   • SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127

    EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go.   • Reference from UITableViewCell to UITableView to UINavigationController

    If the user taps and holds on a Foo table view cell for 2 seconds, a modal view should be shown. The modal view is also displayed when a new Foo is added to the cell. The modal view's delegate protocol is implemented by the parent UITableView subclass. My tap and hold detection code is in the Foo UITableViewCell class. I'm having difficulty referencing the parent tableview's navigation controller to display the modal view. FooModalViewController *modalController = [[FooModalViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"FooModalViewController" bundle:nil]; FooTableViewController *tableView = (FooTableViewController *) self.superview; foo.delegate = tableView; Seems OK but I'm having problems referencing the navigation controller that contains the tableview..   • Tiny, very-basic outgoing MTA?

    I am looking for a very tiny Mail-Transfer-Agent (MTA) for my smaller VPS which only need to send emails for new accounts or notifications. Originally, I used PHP sockets and wrote a 4kb STMP class to connect to google SMTP and send the emails - but I would like to be free of the 500 emails a day (or whatever) limit they have. On larger VPS I can run Postfix - but it takes about 50MB which makes it too big for a 128/256MB VPS. So are there any very tiny MTA's out there - or is there a rundown of the protocol of sending email (I guess it works by forwarding the mail through other servers till it reaches the correct end mail server right?) so I could build a smaller bash or PHP script for this outgoing stuff?

  • Device driver with generic communication media layer

    Greetings all, I'm trying to implement driver for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our head office. Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? It means snort start from last few hours of tcpdump file and generate alerts about this section of file and all of packets in first hours are ignored. Another problem in generatin alert is in time stamp of generated alerts. This means when I run snort on a specific day of dataset, snort insert incorrect time stamp for that alert.   • SIP and Java, where to start and with what?

    I want to implement the SIP protocol in java and would want to be able to create different clients (5 or more) and make them connect to a proxy server. This is all for testing purposes so I would like to be able to see well what's happening on a rather low level. The clients should first be able to communicate trough text and later on maybe also by audio. (If I ever get that far) I already read a bit about the JAIN libraries and what I understood from that is that they are not really well suited for the server side? I also didn't really find any proxy server examples, tutorials, using JAIN. I also found this SIP Servlet Tutorial book, I used HTTP servlets in the past but should I prefer servlets or JAIN or ...? I'm quite new to SIP so I don't really know where to start or what to choose in combination with java.

    Actually, a UITableView is a UIScrollView (inherits from that). Now, I made a UITableView subclass and added this line of code to it: - (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView { NSLog(@"contentOffset: %@", NSStringFromCGPoint(self.contentOffset)); } For some reason this is never called when I scroll the table view. But since UITableView has a delegate property on it's own, I assume that it must implement UIScrollViewDelegate protocol and is the delegate for the scroll view itself. Isn't it? How could I intercept scroll position changes? I want to read them only. Probably I couldn't set them with contentOffset, right?

    I am toying with trace route, my application send a ICMP echo request with a ttl of 0 every time i receive a time exceeded message i increment the ttl by one and resent the package, but what happens is I have 2 routers on my network i can trace the route through these router but third hop always ends up being one of the open dns servers same ip every time no matter where i traceroute to. AFAIK this is the correct traceroute implementation, can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong?

    I have two view controllers that allow changes to the Address Book. The first one lets you add or create an entry based on an ABRedordRef or edit an existing ABRecordRef, by presentation of either ABUnknownPersonViewController or ABPersonViewController. The second one is a standard ABPeoplePickerNavigationController that allows you to view/edit any of the contents of the Address Book. Both views are accessible easily accessible to the use via the main application UITabBarController. How can I determine that changes were made by either view controller, so that I can force data dependency changes to a third separate view controller. I thought that I saw a notification center message that I could subscribe to, but I can't seem to find it again... I don't care if the notification center is the method that should be used, or a delegate protocol or... whatever, I don't care, I just need to know how to detect the change or the need to re-sync with the Address Book. Can someone Please point me in the right direction. Thank you.

    Hi, Im trying to write some kind of multi protocol bot (jabber/irc) that would read messages from fifo file (one liners mostly) and then send them to irc channel and jabber contacts. So far, I managed to create two factories to connect to jabber and irc, and they seem to be working. However, I've problem with reading the fifo file - I have no idea how to read it in a loop (open file, read line, close file, jump to open file and so on) outside of reactor loop to get the data I need to send, and then get that data to reactor loop for sending in both protocols. I've been looking for information on how to do it in best way, but Im totally lost in the dark. Any suggestion/help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment.     EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go.
