• Is Rails Metal (& Rack) a good way to implement a high traffic web service api?

  I am working on a very typical web application. The main component of the user experience is a widget that a site owner would install on their front page. Every time their front page loads, the widget talks to our server and displays some of the data that returns. So there are two components to this web application: the front end UI that the site owner uses to configure their widget the back end component that responds to the widget's web api call Previously we had all of this running in PHP. Now we are experimenting with Rails, which is fantastic for #1 (the front end UI). The question is how to do #2, the back serving of widget information, efficiently. Obviously this is much higher load than the front end, since it is called every time the front page loads on one of our clients' websites. I can see two obvious approaches: A. Parallel Stack: Set up a parallel stack that uses something other than rails (e.g. our old PHP-based approach) but accesses the same database as the front end B. Rails Metal: Use Rails Metal/Rack to bypass the Rails routing mechanism, but keep the api call responder within the Rails app My main question: Is Rails/Metal a reasonable approach for something like this? But also... Will the overhead of loading the Rails environment still be too heavy? Is there a way to get even closer to the metal with Rails, bypassing most of the environment? Will Rails/Metal performance approach the perf of a similar task on straight PHP (just looking for ballpark here)? And... Is there a 'C' option that would be much better than both A and B? That is, something before going to the lengths of C code compiled to binary and installed as an nginx or apache module? Thanks in advance for any insights.

• Outlook Addin in C# - How to add button/group in New Mail (next to signatures)

  I'm having some trouble understanding Outlook terms (CommandBarPopup, CommandBarButton etc) like what is what in Outlook so please be patient. I would like to create couple of things: I would like to create new group (or just button but i read it's not possible to add a button to an existing group in ribbon) on new mail next to Signature/Add attachment in Message Ribbon. It would have to work the same way Signature works so when you press it it display couple of options. How can i create it? I would like to override a button "NEW" (where you can choose that you want to send new mail, make appointment or do other things) so that when you are in Main Window when you press the down arrow next to new button you could choose one of options i will add? Is this possible? How do I do it? • Tricky CSS Layout

  So I am making a website with quite a problematic layout. There are four corner images TL, TR, BL and BR indicated by black blocks. The dark orange area is the main content (to a width of 960px), with the outside area denoted by the green arrow as the browser window. See diagram: The top image represents the site at its narrowest possible - it shouldn't be allowed to be narrower than this (960px) if it is larger than the defined area there should be no scrollbars. The bottom two images represent different widths of browser. The bottom left and right black blocks (images) should be at the bottom left and right of the screen at all times, unless the width falls to 960px, in which case the BL and BR images should poke into the main area slightly. If the site is shrunk to, say 200px, the BR image should not still be poking in the right corner. At this point I don't really care about it working exactly in IE6 (I can get it roughly working) but I can't even figure out how to do it fully without Javascript or extremely experimental CSS. Currently I am using absolutely positioned div's which sort of work, but don't work quite right. I think I'd be willing to accept a bit of JS if there is no other way but I'd rather not. Windows form gives me opportunity to stop the console application at any time. But I'd like to handle somehow the close message inside the console application. • Android: SharedPreference: Defaults not set at startup...

  I have Listpreferences in my app. They don't appear to be setting to their defaults right after installation - they appear to be null. I'm trying to figure out why my default preferences are not being set right after installation. In my main code I have: SharedPreferences sp = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this); InUnits = sp.getString("List1", "defValue"); InAngs = sp.getString("List2", "defValue"); OutUnits = sp.getString("List3", "defValue"); OutAngs = sp.getString("List4", "defValue"); Right after the above code executes, each variable contains "defValue" instead of the actual values I have assigned in my ListPreference below. My preference xml file is called, "settings.xml". Here's what one of the ListPreferences there looks like: <ListPreference android:key="List1" android:title="Input: Alph" android:summary="Choose Alph or Ralph" android:entries="@array/inputAlph" android:entryValues="@array/input_Alph_codes" android:dialogTitle="Input Alph" android:defaultValue="ININ"/> Here's what some of my strings.xml file looks like: <string-array name="inputUnits"> <item>Alph</item> <item>Ralph</item> </string-array> <string-array name="input_Alph_codes"> <item>ININ</item> <item>INMM</item> </string-array> When I go to menu, and then settings, I can see my defaults checked (radiobuttoned). Then when I go back from the settings menu to my main screen - all is well - for life! ...then each var above is assigned the proper default value. This only happens when I first install my app on the phone. After I go to the settings screen once and then right out of it, the app is fine and accepts any setting changes. By the way, as you can see, "List1" is the android:key within a file called settings.xml in my res/xml folder.

  Hey, I'm building a software for timereporting I have a Dictionary<string, Dictionary<string, double>>. The key in the main dictionary is a users name and their value is a dictionary of . I have a function GetDepartment(string UserName) which returns a string with the users department. What I want is to crate a new dictionary, of the same type, that has the department as the main key and in the subdictionary a where hours is the total for that department. I have been trying to do this with linq but did not succeed. Would be very glad for some help here! EDIT: This code does exactly what I want. • Having trouble with instantiating objects in PHP & Ajax custom shopping cart

  This is my first time playing with both ajax and objects, so please go easy on me I have 3 pages that make up the tester shopping cart. 1) page with 'add' 'remove' buttons and ajax code to call the PHP functions on page 2. this is the actual user page with the HTML output. 2) page with PHP cart function calls, receives $_GET requests from ajax on page 1 and calls functions of the cart object from page 3, returns results to page 1. 3) page with cart object definition. Here's the problem I believe I'm having. Currently I have 'session_start()' on pgs 1 & 2, and the cart definition (pag 3) on pgs 1 & 2. I only define '$_SESSION[cart]= new Cart' on page 2. However, it seems like each time i hit an ajax function (eg each time pg 2 reloads) it seems like it's rewriting $_SESSION['cart'] over again, thus it's always empty at each new click (even tho it displays results of that click) However, if i don't define '$_SESSION[cart] = new Cart' on pg 2, i get an error: Fatal error: main() [function.main]: The script tried to execute a method or access a property of an incomplete object. Please ensure that the class definition "Cart" of the object you are trying to operate on was loaded before unserialize() gets called or provide a __autoload() function to load the class definition in /home3/foundloc/public_html/booka/carti.php on line 17 Any suggestions?   Hello everybody, It's my first question on SO. I know that there were many topics on Silverlight and architecture but didn't find answers that satisfies me. I'm ASP.NET MVC developer and are used to work on architectures built with the best practices (loose coupling with DI, etc.) Now I'm faced to the new Silverlight 4 project and would like to be sure I'm doing the best choices as I'm not experienced. Main features required by the applications are as follows : use existing SQL Server Database but with possibility to move to the cloud. using EF4 for the data acess with SQL Server. exitensibility : adding new modules without changing the main host. loose coupling. I was looking at different webcasts (Taulty, etc.), blogs about Silverlight and came up with the following architecture. EF 4 for data access (as specified with the requirements) WCF RIA Services for mid-tiers controling access to data for queries and enabling end-to-end support for data validation, authentication and roles. MEF Support for enabling modules. Unity 2.0 for DI. The problem is that I don't know how to define a reliable architecture where all these elements play well together. Should I use a framework instead like Prism or Caliburn? But for now I'm not sure what scenarios they support. What's the best usages for Unity in Silverlight ? I used to use IoC in ASP.NET MVC for loos coupling and other things like interception for audit logging. It seems that for Silverlight Unity doesn't support Interception. I would like to use it to enable loose coupling and to enable to move to the cloud if needed. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Why a Swing app stops my Java servlet ?

  I have a Swing runnable app which updates messages, then I have a Java servlet that gets messages from Paypal IPN (Instant Payment Notification), when the servlet starts up, in the init(), I starts the Swing runnable app which opens a desktop window, but 30 minutes later an error in the Swing caused the servlet to stop, how can that happen ? • Why is it so difficult to get a working IDE for Scala?

  I recently gave up trying to use Scala in Eclipse (basic stuff like completion doesn't work). So now I'm trying IntelliJ. I'm not getting very far. This was the original error. See below for update: Scala signature Predef has wrong version Expected 5.0 found: 4.1 in .... scala-library.jar I tried both versions 2.7.6 and 2.8 RC1 of scala-*.jar, the result was the same. JDK is 1.6.u20. UPDATE Today I uninstalled IntelliJ 9.0.1, and installed 9.0.2 Early Availability, with the 4/14 stable version of the Scala plug-in. • Set UIViewController background to transparent

  I'm calling a UIViewController from a button on the main view. I have set the alpha of the view to 50%. When the view animates in, I can see that it's transparent. As soon as the animation stops, it becomes opaque. In the xib, when I set opacity, it's sets the opacity over white. So if I set the color to black and the opacity to 50%, this is what I see when I click the button on the main interface to show the view: view slides up from bottom at 50% opacity. I can see the underlaying view through the transparent black nicely. when view stops animating, it become gray. it appears that a white color pops in the background of the view somehow, making the 50% opacity black over white turn gray. I can no longer see the underlaying layer. What I'm trying to do: show 100% white text on a 50% transparent black layer which sits over the view that called this view. How on earth do I do this? • Insert some data at later point once serialization(binary serialization) is done for a class

  My application is written in C# and I am a newbie to C#. I am facing with a problem during serialization. The problem is as follows. There are many classes in my project and when serialization is called on one of the main class object it serializes itself and during this process many of the member objects are also get serialized. This whole serialization is done in to a file with extension say ".bin". This bin file size should be of size max 20MB. In this process of serialization one of my other class also gets serialized to a stream, this class is having a big array. The size of this array or list can be of 80 MB or more. So during serialization i have serialize all the objects other than this array and depending upon the size left in the 20MB I need to add in between the serialization the number of array elements which can fit in the remaining memory. For the other array elements left out I have to create a similar kind of .bin file with all the objects serialized and in between need to insert the number of array elements that can fit there. The main problem here is the array elements get inserted at runtime and this list keeps on increasing. So i should be creating .bin files continuously until my application runs. Any ideas how can i implement a solution for this problem? Thanks in Advance.

  I'm trying to access an EJB3 from a JEE client-application, but keep getting nothing but lookup failures. My JEE Application 'CoreServer' is exposing a number of beans with remote interfaces. I have no problem accessing them from a Web Application deployed on the same Glassfish v3.0.1. Also, when I deploy 'CoreServer', Glassfish reports: Portable JNDI names for EJB CampaignController : [java:global/CoreServer/CampaignController!mvs.api.CampaignControllerRemote, java:global/CoreServer/CampaignController] Glassfish-specific (Non-portable) JNDI names for EJB CampaignController : [mvs.api.CampaignControllerRemote, mvs.api.CampaignControllerRemote#mvs.api.CampaignControllerRemote] I tried all four names, none worked. Is the appclient unable to access beans with (only) Remote interfaces?

  I'm working on a website on a Fmylife style. Now the homepage is the page showing the list of the latest posts. But I think there is a problem with that: The most "interesting" page is the one showing the top posts of the last days, but that page has very few visits compared to the main page. I suppose that's only because the main page is the "default" one. So, I've been thinking of making a home page that shows no posts (only one at the top of the page) but 4 big buttons showing the visitors what are the options to browse the content. But I'm also afraid that most users will not click any option and leave the site having seen no posts. So I don't know what to do. Obviously I have no idea of what will be good from a usability/efficiency point of view. Maybe a mix of the two options will be the best, but I don't know how to mix them. Any advice or idea will be greatly appreciated. • wpf cancel backgroundworker on application exits

  Hi! In my application I have a main windows and into it, in a frame I load a page. This page do a long time task when the user press a button. My problem is that when long task is being doing and the user presses the close button of the main window, the application seems to not finish because I am debugging it in VS2008 and I can see the stop button highlighted. If I want to finish I have to press stop button, the application doesn't stop the debugging automatically on application exit. I thought .NET stops automatically backgroundworkers on application exits but I am not sure after seeing this behaviour. I have tried to force and cancel background worker in unloaded event page with something like this: private void Page_Unloaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { // Is the Background Worker do some work? if (My_BgWorker != null && My_BgWorker.IsBusy) { //If it supports cancellation, Cancel It if (My_BgWorker.WorkerSupportsCancellation) { // Tell the Background Worker to stop working. After doing CancelAsync(), a few minutes after, I can see the backgroundworker finishes and raise RunWorkerCompleted and I can see the task is completed checking e.Cancelled argument in the event but after this event is exectued the application continues without exiting and I have no idea what is doing.... I set WorkerSupportsCancellation to true to support cancel at the begining. I would apreciate all answers. Thanks.

I've been googling for about whole day and found none open source library with scaling algoriths used in loop. Is there such library from wich i could port some methods? I found http://www.codeproject.com/KB/GDI-plus/imgresizoutperfgdiplus.aspx but I really don't understand His approach to the problem, and porting it will be a pain in the ... Wikipedia tells a matematic approach. So my question is: Where can I find easy-to-port graphic open source library wich includes simple scaling algorithms? Of course if such library even exists :)

• Mercurial hg Subrepository Problem - "abort: unknown revision'

  Note: I asked this yesterday over at kiln.stackexchange.com, but haven't gotten an answer, and it's holding up my work. So I figured I'd give it a shot here. My main mercurial repository has a bunch of subrepositories in it. During initial setup, I made a mistake in my .hgsub. Namely, I pointed two subrepositories to the same directory. What I should have had: sites/1=sites/1 sites/2=sites/2 sites/3=sites/3 What I actually had: sites/1=sites/1 sites/2=sites/2 sites/2=sites/3 Stupid copy/paste error. I committed the incorrect .hgsub, not realizing my error. A few revisions later, while adding a some new subrespositories to .hgsub, I noticed the mistake and fixed it inside .hgsub. I committed and kept rolling along. I've committed a reasonable amount of work that I'd prefer not to redo since I 'fixed' the mistake in .hgsub. Now we come to the actual problem: I've made some changes inside the subrepository sites/3, and when I try to commit the main repository, I get the following error: abort: unknown revision 'LongGUIDLookingString' I found this discussion, which seems to address the same problem I'm having, but I can't quite work out how bos fixed it. What do I need to do in order to fix this?
