• Cannot Unbind Super Key from Unity

  Due to a graphics card compatibility issue using CrunchBang, I was told that my best option would be to move to 12.04 LTS. I'm trying to get everything configured and personalized the way I'm used to things, but am having some issues with unbinding default Unity shortcuts. I'm used to having all my shortcuts routed through the super key (T for Terminal, W for Web, Up for increased opacity, and so on). I've followed instructions to install compizconfig-settings-manager, and did an advanced search for all keyboard shortcuts binding to the super key, including the Unity shortcuts, but Unity still seems to listen for that keypress, and thus neither compiz nor the keybindings set up in system prefs - keyboard receive the commands I give them. (I did try also to simply change the unity launcher key instead of disabling it as shown below -- neither worked)

• Is there any practical use for the empty type in Common Lisp?

  The Common Lisp spec states that nil is the name of the empty type, but I've never found any situation in Common Lisp where I felt like the empty type was useful/necessary. Is it there just for completeness sake (and removing it wouldn't cause any harm to anyone)? Or is there really some practical use for the empty type in Common Lisp? If yes, then I would prefer an answer with code example. For example, in Haskell the empty type can be used when binding foreign data structures, to make sure that no one tries to create values of that type without using the data structure's foreign interface (although in this case, the type is not really empty).

• What are the benefits of designing a KeyBinding relay?

  The input system of Quake3 is handled using a Keybinding relay, whereby each keypress is matched against a 'binding' which is then passed to the CLI along with a time stamp of when the keypress (or release) occurred. I just wanted to get an idea from developers what they considered to be the key benefits of designing your input system around this approach? One thing i don't particularly like is the appending of the timestamp to the bound command. This seems like a bit of a hack to bend the CLI into handling the games input? Also I feel that detecting the keypress only to add the command to a stream of text that gets parsed at a later date to be a slightly latent way of responding to input? (or is this unfounded?) The only real benefit i can see is that it allows you to bind 'complex' commands to keypresses; like 'switch weapon;+fire;' for example. Or maybe for journaling purposes? Thanks for any insights!

  Part 1 - Listing Data from Database: Let us now learn ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch by actually developing a front end website for the Chinook database, which is an alternative to the traditional Northwind database. You can get the Chinook database from here. As always the best way to learn something is by working on it and doing something. The Chinook database has the following schema, a quick look will help us implementing the application in a efficient way. Let us first implement a grid view table with the list of Employees with some details, this table also has the Details, Edit and Delete buttons on it to do some operations. This is series of post will concentrate on creating a simple CRUD front end for Chinook DB using ASP.NET MVC 2. In this post, we will look at listing all the possible Employees in the database in a tabular format, from which, we can then edit and delete them as required. In this post, we will concentrate on setting up our environment and then just designing a page to show a tabular information from the database. We need to first setup the SQL Server database, you can download the required version and then set it up in your localhost. Then we need to add the LINQ to SQL Classes required for us to enable interaction with our database. Now after you do the above step, just use your Server Explorer in VS 2010 to actually navigate to the database, expand the tables node and then drag drop all the tables onto the Object Relational Designer space and you go you will have the tables visualized as classes. As simple as that. Now for the purpose of displaying the data from Employee in a table, we will show only the EmployeeID, Firstname and lastname. So let us create a class to hold this information. So let us add a new class called EmployeeList to the ViewModels. We will send this data model to the View and this can be displayed in the page. public class EmployeeList { public int EmployeeID { get; set; } public string Firstname { get; set; } public string Lastname { get; set; } public EmployeeList(int empID, string fname, string lname) { this.EmployeeID = empID; this.Firstname = fname; this.Lastname = lname; } } Ok now we have got the backend ready. So once we specify this and compile the project. Here we are adding the id=”links” to the hyperlinks that is created in the page. In the index.aspx page, we add some jQuery stuff add alternate row colours and highlight colours for rows on mouse over. Now the Controller that handles the requests and directs the request to the right view. • Sort Data in Windows Phone using Collection View Source

  When you write a Windows Phone application you will most likely consume data from a web service somewhere. If that service returns data to you in a sort order that you do not want, you have an easy alternative to sort the data without writing any C# or VB code. You use the built-in CollectionViewSource object in XAML to perform the sorting for you. This assumes that you can get the data into a collection that implements the IEnumerable or IList interfaces.For this example, I will be using a simple Product class with two properties, and a list of Product objects using the Generic List class. The constructor of the Products class calls the InitCollection method which creates three Product objects and adds them to the DataCollection property of the Products class. Once the Products object is instantiated you now add a CollectionViewSource object in XAML using the Products object as the source of the data to this collection. A CollectionViewSource has a SortDescriptions collection that allows you to specify a set of SortDescription objects. Each object can set a PropertyName and a Direction property. As you see in the above code you set the PropertyName equal to the ProductName property of the Product object and tell it to sort in an Ascending direction.All you have to do now is to create a ListBox control and set its ItemsSource property to the CollectionViewSource object.   I've started coding for android and I'm having difficulty trying to properly partition my code. I always end up with a very tight coupling between my UI logic and the actual controls I use to represent them. I have background in both WPF MVVM and ASP.net MVC so I'm familiar with those patterns. After some digging, I found Android Binding. It seems nice and fits nicely with my WPF background. However, it bugs me that its not built in. I'm pretty sure that the android makers have thought of this when designing the android programming interface. So my question is, what is the best practice pattern to use when developing in android, if any. I have looked and looked at their site but didn't find anything...

• FAQ: Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

  A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. It is also where we set the previous row and rowIndex values in HiddenFields.  The $(function(){}); is a short-hand for the jQuery document.ready event. This event will be fired once the page is posted back to the server that’s why we call the function RetainSelectedRow(). The RetainSelectedRow() function is where we referenced the current selected values stored from the HiddenFields and pass these values to the ChangeRowColor() function to retain the highlighted row. QUESTION What are the scenarios in which performances will be best if keepAliveEnabled = false keepAliveEnabled = true Reference From Load Balancing By default, the BasicHttpBinding sends a connection HTTP header in messages with a Keep-Alive value, which enables clients to establish persistent connections to the services that support them. This configuration offers enhanced throughput because previously established connections can be reused to send subsequent messages to the same server. However, connection reuse may cause clients to become strongly associated to a specific server within the load-balanced farm, which reduces the effectiveness of round-robin load balancing. If this behavior is undesirable, HTTP Keep-Alive can be disabled on the server using the KeepAliveEnabled property with a CustomBinding or user-defined Binding.

• Silverlight 4 Twitter Client &ndash; Part 7

  Download this article as a PDF Welcome back :) This week we are going to look at something more exciting and a much required feature for any twitter client – auto refresh so as to show new status updates. We are going to achieve this using Silverlight 4 Timers and a bit and refresh our datagrid every 2 minutes to show new updates. We will do this so that we do only minimal request to the twitter api, so that twitter does not block us – there is a limit of 150 request an hour. Let us get started now. Also we will get the profile user id hyperlinked, so that when ever the user click on it, we will take them to their twitter page. Also it was a pain to always run this application by pressing F5, then it would open in a browser you would have to right click uninstall and install it again to see any changes. All this and yet we were not able to debug it :( Now there is a solution for this to run a silverlight application directly out of browser and yet have the debug feature. Super cool, here is how. Right on the Silverlight project and go to debug and then select the Out-Of-Browser application option and choose the *.Web project. Then just right click on the SL project and set as Startup Project. There you go, now every time you press F5, it will automatically run out of browser and still have the debug options. I go to know about this after some binging. Now let us jump to the core straight away. 1) To get the user id hyperlinked, we need to have a DataGridTemplateColumn and within that have a HyperLinkButton. The code for this will  be <data:DataGridTemplateColumn> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <HyperlinkButton Click="HyperlinkButton_Click" Content="{Binding UserName}" TargetName="_blank" ></HyperlinkButton> </DataTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn> 2) Now let us look at how we are getting this done by looking into HyperlinkButton_Click event handler. There we will dynamically set the NavigateUri to the twitter page. Like I will only rebind the friends timeline again if the data grid currently holds it and I’ll only rebind the respective list status again in the data grid, if already a list status is bound to the data grid. In the above timer code, its set to trigger the Each_Tick event handler every 1 minute (60 seconds). TimeSpan takes in (days, hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds). 4) Now we need to set the list name in the currentGrid variable when a list button is clicked. But if it is some list timeline that is bound in the datagrid, I then call the getListStatus method with the currentGrid string which will actually be holding the list name. 6) I wanted to make the hyperlinks inside the status message as hyperlinks and when the user clicks on it, we can then open that link. • Customizing JBar for Notifications

  Lately I've been using JBar, a very neat jQuery plugin for displaying notifications in my web applications. Unfortunately the original version of JBar only supports binding to the click event of a DOM item. In order to get around this limitation I have modified the source code and posted an updated version on my GitHub account here. The modified version allows you to display a JBar notification by calling a method. I typically use it to display succes or failure messages when doing Ajax calls. I have also included some additional CSS and JS so that you can diplay different styles of notifications. showNotification(message) shows a green "success" message. showWarning(message) shows an orange "warning" message. showMessage(message, className) allows you to specify a custom class to apply to the notification for additional styling purposes. • FAQ&ndash;Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

  A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. This is normal because the the server doesn't know anything about the client/browser not unless if you do something to notify the server that something has changed. To persist the settings we will use some HiddenFields control to store the data so that when it postback we can reference the value from there. It is also where we set the previous row and rowIndex values in HiddenFields.  The $(function(){}); is a short-hand for the jQuery document.ready function. This function will be fired once the page is posted back to the server that’s why we call the function RetainSelectedRow(). The RetainSelectedRow() function is where we referenced the current selected values stored from the HiddenFields and pass these values to the ChangeRowColor) function to retain the highlighted row.
