• An image cropper: How to prevent the default drag n' drop action?

  I am developing an image cropper and would like to ask you the following question: In order to prevent the default drag n' drop action when you press the left button on an image and keeping it pressed try to move the mouse, wouldn't it be cross-browser if to just use the picture as a background to a div box? • Does preloading content from a page skew my google analytics stats?

  I'd like to write myself a simple script that uses AJAX to load the content from each page on my main navbar into a hidden div on the current page. This is just so that I can preload as much of my important content as possible and get it cached on the user's computer (hopefully) before they've finished with the current page and want to move on. I'm concerned that doing a request for every page on the site, every time someone visits, will really ruin the validity of my google analytics stats. How does AJAX interact with google analytics? Does it count as a "page visit"?

  What algorithms (brute force or not) would I use to put in as many cars (assume all cars are the same size) in a parking lot so that there is at least one exit (from the container) and a car cannot be blocked. Or can someone show me an example of this problem solved programmatically. The parking lot varies in shape would be nice but if you want to assume its some invariant shape that is fine. Another Edit: Assume that driving distance in the parking lot is not a factor (although it would be totally awesome if it was weighted factor to number of cars in lot). Another Edit: Assume 2 Dimensional (no cranes or driving over cars). Another Edit: You cannot move cars around once they are parked (its not a valet parking lot). • How to make windows media player go to previous song in playlist?

  Hi, everyone! I am writing a simple Windows app in c++, that will be able to send commands to windows media player. My problem is that I want my app to move to the previous song in the playlist. IWMPControls::previous() seems to do the job, but its behavior differs from what is written in msdn. In fact this function rewinds current media to the beginning and then (if current position is less than 2-3 seconds) it switches to the previous song. I would like to implement two different buttons (please, don't ask me why :)) - one for rewinding to the beginning, and one - to moving to previous song. Is there any easy way to do this through IWMPControls (or any other WMP-related COM interface)? p.s. I could handle this if I could get the position (index) of the current song in the list. But as far as I read MSDN, it seems to me that there is no easy way to get the current item index from playlist...

  I am currently in the planning stages of a game for google app engine, but cannot wrap my head around how I am going to handle AI. I intend to have persistant NPCs that will move about the map, but short of writing a program that generates the same XML requests I use to control player actions, than run it on another server I am stuck on how to do it. I have looked at the Task Queue feature, but due to long running processes not being an option on the App engine, I am a little stuck. I intend to run multiple server instances with 200+ persistant NPC entities that I will need to update. Most action is slowly roaming around based on player movements/concentrations, and attacking close range players(you can probably guess the type of game im developing)

• Circular NSSlider with stop (non-continuous)

  I am not sure how to phrase this better as a title but I need to make an NSSlider that functions as a normal volume knob. At the moment it will spin around as many times as I hold the mouse down and move it around the control. I need it to stop at the "0" position and the "100" position, I cannot have it jumping from 0 to 100 when I drag it the other way. I hope I am making this clear. Does anyone know how to do this or have any suggestions?

  I am very new to object orientated javascript, with experience writing gui's in python and java. I am trying to create html tables that I can place in locations throughout a webpage. Each html table would have two css layouts that control if it is selected or not. I can write all of the interaction if I only have one table. It gets confusing when I have multiple tables. I am wondering how to place these tables throughout a blank webpage and then access the tables individually. I think I am having trouble understanding how inheritance and hierarchy works in javascript/html. NOTE: I am not asking how to make a table. I am trying to dynamically create multiple tables and place them throughout a webpage. Then access their css independently and change it (move them to different locations or change the way the look, independently of the other tables).

• How do I "merge" two separate git repositories of the same website without losing commit data?

  I have two separate git repositories for the same version of a single website. domain.com-1.0 domain.com-2.0 Version 2.0 was completely redone from the ground up. There is no bridge between the two repositories. I would now like to merge the two into a single repository, but maintain the separation. I have already tagged domain.com-1.0 in it's repo and now want to clean the working tree and move domain-2.0 and all it's commit history into 1.0's repo. Is this possible or is there a better way of accomplishing this? Note: domain.com-1.0 will not be developed on anymore and is "being retired".

  Had 3 questions regarding a hw assignment for C++. The goal was to create a simple palindrome method. I tried defining both the "it" and "rit" in the palindrome() method, and I kept on getting an error about needing a "," before rit. But when I cut and paste outside the for loop, no errors from the compiler. (I'm using VS 2008). Second question, I pretty much just brain farted on this one. But is the way I have my return statements in the palindrome() method ok? In my head, I think it works like, once the *it and *rit do not equal each other, then the function returns false, and the method exits at this point. Otherwise if it goes all the way through the for loop, then it returns true at the end. I totally brain farted on how return statements work in if blocks and I tried looking up a good example in my book and I couldn't find one. Finally, I get this warnings: \palindrome.h(14) : warning C4018: '<' : signed/unsigned mismatch Now is that because I run my for loop until (i < input.size()/2) and the compiler is telling me that input can be negative?   I have a pool of items in the drag list which is connected to a sortable using connectToSortable option. Now I want to remove some items from this sort list and move them back to the drag list. Sort of like an undo. Suppose the user moves some 5 items to sort list and decides he/she wants only 4 items, and decides to just drag the unwanted item from the sortlist TO the drag list. • Seeking FOSS user admin code

  It must be a fairly standard wheel, so I'd rather not reinvent it. Create/modify/delete users. Ditto their passwords & maybe enforce password change every X days. Also, create groups, like "sales", "support", etc and add/remove users. The only unique part should be what they have permission to do (visit certain parts of the site after login, etc) And I'd like to store admin data in an ODBC compliant database (MySql to start with, but I may move on). Is this a new wheel? There doesn't seem to be much of anything on SourceForge, but if I could find something established and trusted I wouldn't even mind paying a few $100 as a trade of for the time needed to develop & test it.

  If I were to leave a SHA2 family hash out on my website - how long would it be considered safe? How long would I have before I could be sure that someone would find a collision for it and know what was hashed? I know that the amount of time would be based on the computational power of the one seeking to break it. It would also depend on the string length, but I'm curious just how secure hashes are. Since many of us run web-servers we constantly have to be prepared for the day when someone might make it all the way to the database which stores the user hashes. So, move the server security out of the way and then what do you have? This is a slightly theoretical area for many of the people I have talked with, so I would love to actually have some more information about average expectations for cracking.

  I have a task to generate reports from a Visual Studio C# application. This is a replacement (caused by new requirements) for a program written using the built-in implementation of Crystal Reports. Although workable, it was far from ideal. The reports have conditional content (If type=1, print this, if type=2 print that.) Crystal does not adjust spacing dynamically and the various pieces were not the same length making for some unprofessional-looking spacing. I had thought of generating the reports in HTML, which would be feasible, but I'm concerned that you lose a degree of control, and I may be asked, e.g. to "move this up a bit" or similar which may be tricky. I'm not either a Crystal guru or an HTML guru. What other reporting technologies are available that would make it easy to drop in parts of different sizes, do table layouts, etc.?

• How can you deflect a direction/magnitude vector based on a direction/magnitude vector and a collided triangle?

  So, I have a Triangle-AABB collision algorithm and I have it returning the triangle that the AABB collided with. I was hoping with the 3 vectors of the triangle and the direction/magnitude of the movement would let me determine a deflected vector so that when you run against the wall at an angle you move slower, depending on the angle of collision, but along side the wall. This would remove the sticky collision problem with only moving when there is not a collision. Any suggestions or references would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  If you had a webshop solution based on SQL Server relational DB what would be the reasons, if any, to move to NoSQL storage ? Does it even make sense to migrate datastores that rely on relations heavily to NoSQL? • jquery mouseleave issue when moving too slow

  Hello. I am using the jQuery mouseenter and mouseleave events to slide a div down and up. Everything works well except for the mouseleave which doesn't appear to fire ONLY if the mouse of moved off of the div quite slowly. If i move the mouse at a relatively normal or fast speed then it works as expected. Can anyone explain this or provide any info on how to get around this?   I just started programming in Excel and I have a problem figuring some code out. I have created a work schedule in Excel with lists in order to add new people. I wanted to create a macro in which the user inputs a value in a cell (I chose B3) and depending on that 'start time' in cell B3, the headers for the lists all change to correspond with that starting time. For example: B3 says 5:00 am. All the headers will follow with: 5:00 am, 6:00 am, 7:00 am, etc. of course the headers will move at some point so I'm wondering how do you point to a cell that moves too?

  i want to port my application to CodeIgniter but i am wondering whether i should use their v2.0 or v1.72 (then when they release 2.0, upgrade it). i have never used a framework before so i don't exactly know what implies when upgrading a framework: what does it mean practically - i just move the folders and it will work? or do i have to change a lot of settings, file structure etc? could someone enlighten me about the upgrade process. and what would you use: v.1.72 or v2.0? if i'm using the latest version, is there a good documentation for it somewhere so you can read about how to use the new features: packages, drivers and so on. thanks

• Webservice for serial port devices

  Hi I want to create a remote webservice for an application that is now avaliable only localy. This application controlls three devices (each is controlled separately) connected on serial port. The problem is that I don't know how to take care of passing back information that a device return requested data. For example - I send move command to the motion device (which is very slow and can take a minute or more). Can I just set a big timeout on the client side (and server side) and return for example a true/false if operation is completed or is this a bad idea? Is SOAP with big timeouts ok? And the other question is if Mono on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Mono 2.4) is stable enought for making a web service or should I chose Java or some other language? I'm open for recommendations.
