• What is the best approach for inline code comments?

  We are doing some refactoring to a 20 years old legacy codebase, and I'm having a discussion with my colleague about the comments format in the code (plsql, java). There is no a default format for comments, but in most cases people do something like this in the comment: // date (year, year-month, yyyy-mm-dd, dd/mm/yyyy), (author id, author name, author nickname) and comment the proposed format for future and past comments that I want is: // {yyyy-mm-dd}, unique_author_company_id, comment My colleague says that we only need the comment, and must reformat all past and future comments to this format: // comment My arguments: I say for maintenance reasons, it's important to know when and who did a change (even this information is in the SCM). The code is living, and for that reason has a history. Because without the change dates it's impossible to know when a change was introduced without open the SCM tool and search in the long object history. because the author is very important, a change of authors is more credible than a change of authory Agility reasons, no need to open and navigate through the SCM tool people would be more afraid to change something that someone did 15 years ago, than something that was recently created or changed. etc. My colleague's arguments: The history is in the SCM Developers must not be aware of the history of the code directly in the code Packages gets 15k lines long and unstructured comments make these packages harder to understand What do you think is the best approach? Or do you have a better approach to solve this problem?

• How can I get something like Nautilus's "spatial" behaviour in 11.10 and later?

  Until recently, Nautilus had an optional "spatial" mode as an alternative to its usual browser mode. Users could enable it by opening Nautilus's preferences and selecting "Open each folder in its own window." Choosing this option resulted in a stripped down interface, and folders would always open in the same place on the screen. It looked something like this: That checkbox is still there, but it doesn't do the same thing: while every folder opens in a new window, those windows are all the same size and positioned the same way. Nautilus doesn't restore the size and position of each folder, which is what spatial mode was all about. This difference really shows if someone opens a folder in a new window, and then opens the same folder again. Nautilus will create another window instead of focusing the existing window. I help someone who is currently using Ubuntu 10.04, and he will be upgrading to 12.04 in the future. He is very comfortable with Nautilus's spatial behaviour and I think he would be disappointed to lose it. Is there an alternative file manager, or perhaps some less obvious option, that will give him an interface similar to the one he is comfortable with?

  April Fools' Day is a great excuse for me to do something funny with RadGridView. So todays post will have less geekness and more fun than usually.   Silverlight being a great platform and RadGridView being enormously flexible control provoked me to do something that you can not exactly call the typical Line-Off-Business application.   So enjoy this small  Pexeso game clone created with the help of RadGridView for Silverlight and some standard Silverlight re-styling techniques. The rules are simple : Try to open two identical cards at the same time. The goal of the game try to open all cards this way. • Basic Connections Through Socket Server

  I'm designing a simple 2 player RTS with Stencyl, a program that uses blocks for coding. The current code updates lists whenever an actor moves (new X and Y), and I'd want the server to update the game state with each change to the list. However, to start off: I don't even know how to set up a socket server. Stencyl has taught me the basics of logic, but I've yet to learn any programming languages. I've downloaded a Smartfox 2X socket server that I'm intending to use. Right now I'm only looking to make baby steps; I want to do something to this effect: "When someone connects to the server, open insert file here". How can I do this? My intention is to have this file be the game client. Is this "open file when connected" method the best way to go about this? When answering: assume that I know nothing, because really, though I have done research (I know that UDPTCP for real time), implementation-wise I know nothing.

• 12.04.1 no audio through HDMI

  having a bit of an issue with getting audio to go through HDMI. Here are the base specs: OS: Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.1 x64 CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8G 4M FM2 R Mobo: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 OS: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Vid Card: (integrated on CPU) AMD Radeon HD 7660D HDMI sound works fine under Win7 (after mobo and vid drivers are installed), so it's not physically broken. Audio through the normal headphone jacks works fine under Ubuntu. Looking at the audio panel, there is no HDMI output at all. aplay -l also reports only: card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 In additional drivers there are two versions: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) The first installs, but problem persists. I do get more resolutions to pick from. Second version does not, reporting it failed installation and to find details at: /var/log/jockey.log Looked at the log, and it's insanely long, if necessary I can get it to you guys. Did more research and some had luck by manually installing the drivers, so tried to give that a shot by following this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Manually_installing_Catalyst_12.6 starting at 3.1 Manually installing Catalyst 12.6. I immediately had 2 issues, (1) the AMD website does not provide any drivers for Linux, and (2) the following command did not work: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise sh: 0: Can't open amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run Some other posts stated to update "alsa-drivers", but that also did not work as install command for the new version of them did not work. I forget the exact issue, but similar to above, cannot open / cannot find. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Exempt programs from using active VPN connection

  When I connect to a VPN, all my network traffic is automatically routed through it. Is there a way to add exemptions to that? I don't know if adding exceptions has anything to do with the VPN protocol, but the VPN I'm using is of the OpenVPN protocol. Speaking of OpenVPN, why is it not installed by default on Ubuntu installs unlike PPTP? I could not get the list of IRCHighWay's servers, and this is the result I get trying to connect on XChat with running the bash script running: * Looking up irc.irchighway.net * Connecting to irc.irchighway.net (65.23.153.98) port 6667... * Connected. • Plastic Clamshell Packaging Voted Worse Design Ever

  We’ve all been there: frustrated and trying free a new purchase from it’s plastic clamshell jail. You’re not alone, the packaging design has been voted the worst in history. In a poll at Quora, users voted on the absolute worst piece of design work they’d encountered. Overwhelmingly, they voted the annoying-to-open clamshell design to the top. The author of the top comment/entry, Anita Shillhorn writes: “Design should help solve problems” — clamshells are supposed to make it harder to steal small products and easier for employees to arrange on display — but this packaging, she says, makes new ones, such as time wasted, frustration, and the little nicks and scrapes people incur as they just try to get their damn lightbulb out. This is a product designed for the manufacturers and the retailers, not the end users. • Is it possible to execute keyboard input programmatically in Linux?

  For example is there a Linux command or way that I could from a program (c++ | python| or other) enter a series of keyboard inputs that are interpreted as though they are keyboard inputs. I have a bad case of Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) from typing. To ease my pain I developed a voice controlled interface using pocket sphinx and a custom grammar and to run a number of very common commands. ex: "open chrome" , "open vim". Basically what is shown here, but with slightly diff tools: http://bloc.eurion.net/archives/2008/writing-a-command-and-control-application-with-voice-recognition/ I have run into some limitation as I can only execute command line commands given a voice command. Rather than having a "voice command" - "command line command" mapping, I would like to have "voice command" - "keyboard input" mapping. So when my active window is a browser and I type + n, and new tab opens. If I'm in vim and new vim tab opens. Any suggestions, ideas, tools or approaches to this problem would be much appreciated. I understand the answer may not be simple, but would like to develop it none the less.

• Quick Script for Adding Skype Groups

  So, I needed to add about 30 people to several different Skype groups today, and I didn’t want to repeat the /add [skypename] thing over and over and over.  Building the list was a pain . . . I couldn’t find a good way to extract all of the users in an existing group.  There’s probably an api or something, but I just did that part by hand. Before you double click on the file in windows explorer, you’ll need to have created the groups in skype.  For each group, open the group, and click in the chat window of the group.  Then double click on the WSF file.  If you don’t click in the chat window, you will likely get the add user dialog box instead of just adding the users.   Can someone tell me how to remove dormant X sessions. This question is similar to Logging out other users from the command line, but more specific to controlling X displays which I find hard to kill. I have a workshop where a number of users will use the computer under their own login. After the workshop is over there are a number of logins that are left open. I would prefer to kill the open sessions rather than try to log into each users' screen. Again, this question isn't just about logging users' out. I'm hoping to get clarity also for killing/removing stuck processes that are hard to kill. • Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

In both cases visiting a store is an experience where sales take a backseat to entertainment, exploration, and engagement This quote from a recent Stores Magazine article says it all: "We compete based on an experience, emotion and immersion like Disney," says Neal Lassila, vice president of global information technology for Disney. "That's opposed to [competing] on price and hawking a doll for $19.99. There is no sales pressure technique." Instead, it's about delivering "a great time." While you're attending the NRF conference in New York next week, you'll definitely want to stop by the new 20,000 square-foot Disney store in Times Square. If you're not attending, you can always check out the videos to get a feel for the stores' vibe. This year we've invited Disney Stores to open a pop-up store within the Oracle Retail booth. There will be lots of items on sale that fit in your suitcase, and there's no better way to demonstrate our POS, including the mobile POS running on an iPod Touch. You should also plan to attend Tuesday morning's super-session The Magic of the Disney Store: An Immersive Retail Experience with Steve Finney. In the case of Apple and Disney, less POS is actually a good thing. In both cases it was important to make the checkout process fast and easy so as not to detract from the overall experience. There will be ample opportunities to see this play out in New York next week, so I hope you take advantage.

• I can't install Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 15R at all

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS, 64 bit onto a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop. I've shrunk down one of the windows partitions and even used gparted to format the vacant space as ext4. However, the install disk simply does not present any options when it comes to the partitioning step. What I get is a non-responsive blank table As well as the above, I've changed the BIOS settings so that USB emulation is disabled (as per Can't install on Dell Inspiron 15R), and changed the SATA Operation setting to all three possible options. • Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • Combining Code Review with Trust Metrics

  I don't get the chance to partake of it at work. But I love the idea of code review. Especially of online open source code review like Gerrit Code Review. I love what Trust Metrics have done for forums and collective intelligences sites on the internet like stackexchange, reddit, and wikipedia. Would it be possible to combine the two and come up with an open source project management system. Something that ends up being mostly community driven. Perhaps a kind of wikipedia of code for a project. Where submitters become popular/trusted by having lots of patches reviewed favoriably by others, and accepted into the trunk. And popular/trusted submitters get their patchs accepted faster/easier. I'm looking for some opinions on the idea, or perhaps pointers to where its been done before, if thats the case. This might leave the lead maintiner little more to do than: wrangle the direction of the project by fast-tracking or vetoing specific patches. settling disputes when the CI tests break, or fixing it himself. Is design by community worse than design by committee?

• is it possible to execute keyboard input programmaticly in linux?

  For example is there a Linux command or way that I could from a program (c++ | python| or other) enter a serious of keyboard inputs that are interpreted as though they are keyboard inputs. I have a bad case of RSI from typing. To ease my pain I developed a voice controlled interface using pocket sphinx and a custom grammar and to run a number of very common commands. ex: "open chrome" , "open vim". basically what is shown here, but with slightly diff tools: http://bloc.eurion.net/archives/2008/writing-a-command-and-control-application-with-voice-recognition/ I have run into some limitation as I can only execute command line commands given a voice command. Rather than having a "voice command" - "command line command" mapping I would like to have "voice command" - "keyboard input" mapping. So when my active window is a browser and i type + n, and new tab opens. If i'm in vim and new vim tab opens. Any suggestions, ideas, tools or approaches to this problem would be much appreciated. I understand the answer may not be simple, but would like to develop it none the less.
