C++ Types Impossible to Name

While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

Preventing entire JOINed MYSQL query from failing when one field is missing within a WHERE clause

I am doing a couple of joins with a variable in the WHERE clause. I'm not sure if I am doing everything as efficiently as I could, or even using the best practices but my issue is that half my tables have data for when tableC.type=500, and the other half don't resulting in the entire query failing. SELECT tableA.value1 , tableB.value2, tableC.value3 FROM tableA JOIN tableB ON tableB.id=tableA.id JOIN tableC ON tableC.id=tableB.id WHERE tableA.category=$var && tableC.type=500; What I would like to happen is to still get tableA.value1 and tableB.value2 even if there is no field in tableC with a type=500. any thoughts? i'm totally stumped as how to approach this...

Adapting non-iterable containers to be iterated via custom templatized iterator

I have some classes, which for various reasons out of scope of this discussion, I cannot modify (irrelevant implementation details omitted): class Foo { /* ... irrelevant public interface ... */ }; class Bar { public: Foo& get_foo(size_t index) { /* whatever */ } size_t size_foo() { /* whatever */ } }; (There are many similar 'Foo' and 'Bar' classes I'm dealing with, and it's all generated code from elsewhere and stuff I don't want to subclass, etc.) [Edit: clarification - although there are many similar 'Foo' and 'Bar' classes, it is guaranteed that each "outer" class will have the getter and size methods. Only the getter method name and return type will differ for each "outer", based on whatever it's "inner" contained type is. So, if I have Baz which contains Quux instances, there will be Quux& Baz::get_quux(size_t index), and size_t Baz::size_quux().] Given the design of the Bar class, you cannot easily use it in STL algorithms (e.g. for_each, find_if, etc.), and must do imperative loops rather than taking a functional approach (reasons why I prefer the latter is also out of scope for this discussion): Bar b; size_t numFoo = b.size_foo(); for (int fooIdx = 0; fooIdx < numFoo; ++fooIdx) { Foo& f = b.get_foo(fooIdx); /* ... do stuff with 'f' ... */ } So... So, finally, the actual question: I don't like requiring the use of bind() and _1 placeholders, etcetera by the caller. All they really care about is: outer type, inner type, outer type's method to fetch inner instances, outer type's method to fetch count inner instances. Is there any way to "hide" the bind in the body of the template classes somehow? I've been unable to find a way to separately supply template parameters for the types and inner methods separately... In NHibernate you can map generics like this <class name="Units.Parameter`1[System.Int32], Units" table="parameter_int" > </class> But how can I map a class like this? Set<T> where T is a Parameter<int> like this Set<Parameter<int>> My mapping hbm.xml looking like this fails <class name="Set`1[[Units.Parameter`1[System.Int32], Units]],Units" table="settable"/> I simplified my mappings a little to get my point accross very clearly. Basically I want NHibernate to map generic class which has has generic type parameter. Want I understand from googling around is that NHibernate is not able to parse the name to the correct type in TypeNameParser.Parse() which result in the following error when adding the mapping to the configuration System.ArgumentException: Exception of type 'System.ArgumentException' was thrown. Parameter name: typeName@31 Anybody found a way around this limitation?

How would one go about defining something like this in an xsd? <start> <request type="typeA"> <elementOnlyFoundInA /> </request> <request type="typeB"> <elementOnlyFoundInB /> </request> </start> I ran xsd.exe just to get an idea of what it might look like, but it does not appear recognize the relationships between the value of type and the contents of the request. Is it even possible to define contents based on an attribute like this in an xsd file?

How to print size_t variable portably?

I have a variable of type size_t, and I want to print it using printf(). What format specifier do I use to print it portably? In 32-bit machine, %u seems right. I compiled with g++ -g -W -Wall -Werror -ansi -pedantic, and there was no warning. But when I compile that code in 64-bit machine, it produces warning. size_t x = <something>; printf( "size = %u\n", x ); warning: format '%u' expects type 'unsigned int', but argument 2 has type 'long unsigned int' The warning goes away, as expected, if I change that to %lu. The question is, how can I write the code, so that it compiles warning free on both 32- and 64- bit machines? Edit: I guess one answer might be to "cast" the variable into an unsigned long, and print using %lu. That would work in both cases. I am looking if there is any other idea. (C, C++)

I'm trying to sort out values from a database by the weekending date. The script I'm using functions on 6 of my 7 databases (they are all constructed identically). The 7th database doesn't function. I have a certain predefined database structure that I am stuck with. The question is whether this structure is OK for ORM or I whether should add a processing layer that would create a more convenient structure every time something is inserted into the original DB. To simplify, here's what it kind of looks like. I have a person table: PersonId Name And I have a properties table: PersonId PropertyType PropertyValue So, for person John Doe... (1, 'John Doe') ...I could have three properties: (1, 'phone', '555-55-55'), (1, 'email', '[email protected]), (1, 'type', 'employee') By using ORM I would like to get a "person" object that would have properties "name", "phone", "email", "type". Can Propel do that? How efficient is it? Is it a better idea to create a table with columns "phone", "email", "type" and fill it automatically as new rows are inserted into the properties table?

Is there a way of using ctrl-r after typing part of command in bash?

In bash the ctrl-r command is very useful, I type ctrl-r whatever and it searchs my history for commands containing the word whatever. But if I type whatever and realize that I would like search that word and hit ctrl-r nothing happens. Is there a way hitting a key and having it behaving as if I had typed ctrl-r whatever instead of whatever ctrl-r? I have the following in my .inputrc "\C-p": history-search-backward but this only works if the beginning of the line is the same.

Problem running Chrome from Start->Run

When I hit Start-Run and type "Chrome", nothing happens (no new "chrome.exe" process is launched, not error, nothing). When I hit Start (without "Run"), type Chrome and run it, it works. How do I find what shortcut is run via Start-Run ? When I open a command prompt and write "Chrome.exe", it doesn't recognize it as an executable program.

Are there any test data generator tools which can be used with selenium/Nunit?

Hi, I was wondering if there was anything that provides test data for injecting into Nunit tests? I'm sure I came across something recently that does this but I couldn't find it again. Basically the idea is that I could use selenium and Nunit to create new customers within the system automatically. So I could have selenium type in customer names generated from test generator (the < DataGenerator is just an imaginary class): e.g. dim sFirstName as string = < DataGenerator >.GetRandomFirstName() dim sLastName as string = < DataGenerator >.GetRandomLastName() selenium.type("firstname_field",sFirstName) selenium.type("lastname_field",sLastName ) I've already seen SQLDataGenerator from Redgate which has a cmd line wrapper class, but I was wondering if there was anything else.
