• Storing SQL queries in Table in sql server

  We have multiple jobs in our system.These jobs are listed in a grid. We have 3 different user types (usertypeid 1,2,3). For each user listing is different and he can filter listing by selecting view from a dropdown. ViewName in the below table is the view which needs to be displayed. To achieve this functionality, a fellow developer has created the following table structure and stored sql fragments in SQLExpression in the below table. According to me the query should not be stored in database. What are the pros and cons of this approach and what are the available alternatives? • how to create multiple selections in text edit box in qt4?

  Qt3.3 used to allow for multiple selections in the QTextEdit widget by calling the setSelection() function and specifying a different selection id (selNum) as the last argument in that function. In Qt4, to create a selection, I do it by creating a QTextCursor object and call the setPosition() or movePosition() methods. I have no problems being able to create a single selection of text. I am, however, unable to find a way to create multiple selections. The methods in Qt4 do not have an argument which allows you to set a selection id, nor can i find any other function in the QTextCursor or QTextEdit which looks like it might allow me to do so. Has this feature been completely removed from Qt4? or has is there a new and different way of doing it? Thanks. Ronny

• Set database based on how the application was started

  I have two Rails applications (lets call them APP-1 and APP-2), each of them has a dependancy on a third Rails application (APP-3). I would like to be able to run the tests for APP-1 and APP-2 in parallel on my CI server. The problem is, both need to start up APP-3 and write to a DB via the APP-3. This causes conflicts and failures if the tests are run in parallel. My idea for a solution is for APP-1 and APP-2 to each start their own instance of APP-3 and to have each instance point to a different DB. Is there a way to dynamically set the DB in the database.yml of APP-3 so that it connects to a different DB depending on which APP starts it up? FYI. APP-1 and APP-2 currently start APP-3 via rake tasks.

Updated: If I replace the $(this) in the plugin with the actual element selector $('#grid') - it works just fine, I cant do this in my real app because the plugin is used by several other table elements and grids

  Hi, I'm reading about Azure and there are a couple of things I don't understand: If I choose put a server on Europe, why can't I move it to another datacenter afterwards? If I choose a size for a worker/web role, could I upgrade it to a bigger one afterwards? I think I've read that I cannot put different instances of a worker/web role with different sizes working together? Am I right? And in affirmative case, why? What is cheaper? a big VM with a nicely multithreaded worker role or multiple single-threaded worker roles in several small VMs? Thanks in advance.

• How can I tell if a closed path contains a given point?

  In Android, I have a Path object which I happen to know defines a closed path, and I need to figure out if a given point is contained within the path. What I was hoping for was something along the lines of path.contains(int x, int y) but that doesn't seem to exist. The specific reason I'm looking for this is because I have a collection of shapes on screen defined as paths, and I want to figure out which one the user clicked on. If there is a better way to be approaching this such as using different UI elements rather than doing it "the hard way" myself, I'm open to suggestions. I'm open to writing an algorithm myself if I have to, but that means different research I guess.

• JasperReports reports access image via authenticated URL

  Hi all, I am hoping that this is a simple issue with a simple solution and that I have missed something obvious. Let me explain the problem; We have an application that generates PDF reports (using Jasper). These reports contain data from our database, as well as imagery (photographs). These photographs are stored in S3. We use signed URLs to access these photographs. We link these photographs into our Jasper reports using these S3 URLs. Because the S3 URLs are signed and time-limited (by design), the process is as follows; User requests a report to be generated, Report is filled, and goes to our database (at which time UUIDs to any required images are retrieved), For each UUID an S3 signed URL must be generated, To do this the URL behind each report image is a call to an authenticated URL in our app (/get_img?uuid=foo), The controller behind this URL generates a signed S3 URL and returns it, Reports loads the image. The problem is with step (4) - the call to the authenticated URL fails because Jasper does not pass any authentication information with the request. Is there a solution here? • Remote Postgresql - extremely slow

  Hi, I have setup PostgreSQL on a VPS I own - the software that accesses the database is a program called PokerTracker. PokerTracker logs all your hands and statistics whilst playing online poker. I wanted this accessible from several different computers so decided to installed it on my VPS and after a few hiccups I managed to get it connecting without errors. However, the performance is dreadful. I have done tons of research on 'remote postgresql slow' etc and am yet to find an answer so am hoping someone is able to help. Things to note: The query I am trying to execute is very small. Whilst connecting locally on the VPS, the query runs instantly. While running it remotely, it takes about 1 minute and 30 seconds to run the query. The VPS is running 100MBPS and then computer I'm connecting to it from is on an 8MB line. The network communication between the two is almost instant, I am able to remotely connect fine with no lag whatsoever and am hosting several websites running MSSQL and all the queries run instantly, whether connected remotely or locally so it seems specific to PostgreSQL. I'm running their newest version of the software and the newest compatible version of PostgreSQL with their software. The database is a new database, containing hardly any data and I've ran vacuum/analyze etc all to no avail, I see no improvements. I don't understand how MSSQL can query almost instantly yet PostgreSQL struggles so much. I am able to telnet to the post 5432 on the VPS IP with no problems, and as I say the query does execute it just takes an extremely long time. What I do notice is on the router when the query is running that hardly any bandwidth is being used - but then again I wouldn't expect it to for a simple query but am not sure if this is the issue. I've tried connecting remotely on 3 different networks now (including different routers) but the problem remains. Connecting remotely via another machine via the LAN is instant. I have also edited the postgre conf file to allow for more memory/buffers etc but I don't think this is the problem - what I am asking it to do is very simple - it shouldn't be intensive at all. • How practical to change MVC app from traditional authentication to cookieless?

  I have an application written in MVC that uses your regular .Net Forms Authentication. There's nothing particularly new or exciting going on with it. My client has now asked that users be able to log in to the app on the same machine but in different browsers, or different tabs within the same browser. To my mind, he's asking for a scope change to have authentication moved to cookieless instead of its current design. Not having had any experience with doing this in MVC, I'm curious to know before I get started how much hurt I'm in for by trying this. Are there better ways to do it? What should I consider? Any advice appreciated.

  I am getting this error in my sys.transmission_queue table whenever I attempt to send a SQL Service Broker message between two different SQL Server servers. (i.e. the databases are on two different physical machines) Dialog security is unavailable for this conversation because there is no security certificate bound to the database principal (Id: 5). Either create a certificate for the principal, or specify ENCRYPTION = OFF when beginning the conversation When this error refers to "database principal" what is it referring to? (the "master" database? dbo user?) I've used the CREATE CERTIFICATE command, backed up the certificate and created a same named certificate on the other server with the backup .cer file from the first server, but I keep getting this message. Any help would be appreciated in getting me pointed in the right direction. I must be missing something obvious. FYI, in my development environment, both the initiating and target databases were on the same physical server, and same SQL instance, and everything was working fine.

  So, I'm having a problem whereby for some reason I can only add one instance of a .tooltipseperator to a drop down menu. E.g. I have to create a new .tooltipseperator if I want to add another to a different menu list.   Hi, In my iPhone application I need a scrolling text. I had the text to be displayed and scrolled up and down but I could not get customized text. I mean all the text is of same font. I need some different font size text . I am using UITextView, but UITextView do not support customized text in it. How can I have the scrolling text which has different font size. I read that to use UIWebView for this. But, I could not understand how to use it. the text contains no url's no editing.(It need to be just static text to read). How can I do this ? Thank you.

• Portable way to determine the platform's line separator

  Different platforms use different line separator schemes (LF, CR-LF, CR, NEL, Unicode LINE SEPARATOR, etc.). C++ (and C) make a lot of this transparent to most programs, by converting '\n' to and from the target platform's native new line encoding. But if your program needs to determine the actual byte sequence used, how could you do it portably? The best method I've come up with is: Write a temporary file in text mode with just '\n' in it, letting the run-time do the translation. Read back the temporary file in binary mode to see the actual bytes. That feels kludgy. Is there a way to do it without temporary files? I tried stringstreams instead, but the run-time doesn't actually translate '\n' in that context (which makes sense). Does the run-time expose this information in some other way?

  I'm working on an asp.net mvc application. Each user have his own time zone. Right now, I'm using "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" to generate a drop down list in order for the user to select a timezone and this is what I store in my db They are like that: Morocco Standard Time (00:00:00) UTC (00:00:00) GMT Standard Time (00:00:00) ... I know that php use a different timezone set, they are "region timezone", for example: Europe/Paris Europe/London ... My question is: is there a way to play with the region timezone (like php) in an .NET application? The only way I can think of is to bind each php region timezone to the .net timezone. Also, the "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" list all of the timezone on the machine. Is the list different between windows server, windows vista, windows xp? Hope this make sense, thanks guys

• UISwitch text not showing on device

  Hi, I have a screen with several UISwitch controls. On my iPhone simulator this screen works correctly and The Switch text shows as On/Off. Different on my testing device (iPod Touch). Here the text seems to get lost and I only get "1" (instead of "On") and "0" (instead of "Off"). I don't know where the iPod Touch is different and why it's not showing correctly. Anyone had a similar experience? Is this a bug? Cheers

• Javascript self contained sandbox events and client side stack

  I'm in the process of moving a JSF heavy web application to a REST and mainly JS module application . I've watched "scalable javascript application architecture" by Nicholas Zakas on yui theater (excellent video) and implemented much of the talk with good success but i have some questions : I found the lecture a little confusing in regards to the relationship between modules and sandboxes , on one had to my understanding modules should not be effected by something happening outside of their sandbox and this is why they publish events via the sandbox (and not via the core as they do access the core for hiding base libary) but each module in the application gets a new sandbox ? , shouldn't the sandbox limit events to the modoules using it ? or should events be published cross page ? e.g. : if i have two editable tables but i want to contain each one in a different sandbox and it's events effect only the modules inside that sandbox something like messabe box per table which is a different module/widget how can i do that with sandbox per module , ofcourse i can prefix the events with the moduleid but that creates coupling that i want to avoid ... and i don't want to package modules toghter as one module per combination as i already have 6-7 modules ? while i can hide the base library for small things like id selector etc.. i would still like to use the base library for module dependencies and resource loading and use something like yui loader or dojo.require so in fact i'm hiding the base library but the modules themself are defined and loaded by the base library ... seems a little strange to me libraries don't return simple js objects but usualy wrap them e.g. : u can do something like $$('.classname').each(.. which cleans the code alot , it makes no sense to wrap the base and then in the module create a dependency for the base library by executing .each but not using those features makes a lot of code written which can be left out ... and implemnting that functionality is very bug prone does anyonen have any experience with building a front side stack of this order ? how easy is it to change a base library and/or have modules from different libraries , using yui datatable but doing form validation with dojo ... ? some what of a combination of 2+4 if u choose to do something like i said and load dojo form validation widgets for inputs via yui loader would that mean dojocore is a module and the form module is dependant on it ?   Currently, I'm populating a drop down list when a file is created in a configurable folder. if (!downloadRspDropDown.Items.Contains(new ListItem(txt, fileData.FullName)) Then, I add the file and remove "No Responses Available". However, if the same file is resubmitted (i.e., the file name is the same but the timestamp is different), then I want to remove the older entry and replace it with a new entry in the drop down list. I have the filename, so I go into the "else" block from the line of code above. From there, I'm checking to see if I have the same filename and a different creation time. if (downloadRspDropDown.Items.Contains(new ListItem(txt, fileData.FullName) && downloadRspDropDown.Items.Contains(new ListItem(txt, fileData.CreationTime) From here, I want to find the position, remove it, and add the new text. This approach isn't working. Can anyone offer an alternate approach?

  I am attempting to hash and keep(the hash) an object of type IEnumerable<anotherobject> which has about a 1000 entries. I'll be generating another such object, but this time I'd like to check for any changes in the values of the entries using the hash codes of the two objects. Basically, I was wondering if GetHashCode() is apt for this, both from a performance perspective and reliability perspective (getting different values for different object values and same values for same object values, always). If I have to override it, what would be a good way to do so, does it always depend on the type of anotherobject and what Equals means when comparing two anotherobjects? Is there a generic way to do it? This concern is because my object can be quite big.

  I'm trying (as a self-learning exercise) to create a Clojure macro that will generate code to apply a function to a sequence of integers and sum the result, e.g. f(0) + f(1) + f(2) + f(3) This is my attempt: (defmacro testsum [func n] `(fn [x#] (+ ~@( map (fn [i] `(~func x#)) (range n))))) However something seems to go wrong with the x# gensym and I end up with two different versions of x and hence the function doesn't work: (macroexpand '(testsum inc 3)) gives: (fn* ([x__809__auto__] (clojure.core/+ (inc x__808__auto__) (inc x__808__auto__) (inc x__808__auto__)))) This is pretty much exactly what I want apart from the different 809 and 808 versions of x..... What am I doing wrong? I thought that the auto gensym was meant to create a single unique symbol for exactly this kind of purpose? Is there a better way of doing this?

  In my portfolio site I have listed my projects under separate tabs (tab menu). This works well except for printing which requires the user to click on a tab, print, click on the next tab and print the same page again to get everything. Being a portfolio I'd assume that visitors want to print all of the content. Is there a general way to create a different style when printing a web page? Or should I just add a printer icon on my page which redirects the user to a different page where all the data is in a big chunk and then prompt the user's browser to start printing?

• XML Schema Header & Namespace Config

  Migrating from DTD to XSD and for some reason the transition is a bumpy one. I understand how to define the schema once I'm inside the <xs:schema> root tag, but getting past the header & namespace declaration stuff is proving to be especially confusing for me. I have been trying to follow the well-laid out tutorial on W3S but even that tutorial seems to assume a lot of knowledge up front. I guess what I'm looking for is a King's English explanation of which attributes do what, where they go, and why: xmlns xmlns:xs xmlns:xsi targetNamespace xsi:schemaLocation And in some cases I see different variations of these elements/attributes, such as xsi which seems to have two different notations like xsi:schemaLocation="..." and xs:import schemaLocation="...". I guess between all these slight variations I can't seem to make heads or tails of what each of these does. Thanks in advance for bringing any clarity to this confusion!

• Website with Microsites & Blog - recommendations

  Hi guys, I'm in the process of scoping a solution for an events organisation. Their main website features information about them and blog entries etc, but they hold major events which require microsites (domain.com/event). The microsites all have a different look-and-feel, different nav structure, and custom content-managed components. The one thing that's common across everything is the blog - it will have a category for each event under which users can post. The main site will display all blog posts, but the microsites will only display posts for their category. How would you guys implement this? The solution needs to be PHP, and my initial thought was CodeIgniter but if possible I'd like to avoid building the blog functionality - so I guess I could integrate it with EE or Wordpress. If anyone has any other suggestions they would be most appreciated.
