• Problems with nvidia drivers

  I have a problem that I haven't been able to find a solution to. I recently decided to switch from Windows to Ubuntu 11.10, so I originally installed Ubuntu using the wubi installer for windows. After I installed Ubuntu with wubi I installed drivers for nvidia using the additional drivers from system setting and everything worked fine. I then decided that I no longer wanted windows on my computer because i was having problems with it crashing when I went to remove the partition with windows on it using an Ubuntu Live CD I made I found that there were unrepairable problems with both of my partitions so I decided to delete both partitions and install Ubuntu again from the cd now when I try to install nvidia drivers my gui will not load when i start my computer. I have found people who have had similar problems with the gui not loading after installing nvidia drivers but no one who had there gui working after installing with wubi then not working after installing from a cd. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 32 I have also tried other versions of linux like openSUSE and have had the same problem with the gui not being able to load after installing nvidia drivers.

• PDF to Image Conversion in Java

  In the past, I created a NetBeans plugin for loading images as slides into NetBeans IDE. That means you had to manually create an image from each slide first. So, this time, I took it a step further. You can choose a PDF file, which is then automatically converted to an image for each page, each of which is presented as a node that can be clicked to open the slide in the main window. As you can see, the remaining problem is font rendering. Currently I'm using PDFBox. Any alternatives that render font better? • How can I get better at explaining complex software processes to developers?

  I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

• When I remove the SSL port 443 from IIS my website stops loading, how can I have it just work with only port 80 and no SSL?

  I am trying to disable SSL, I delete the 443 port so there is only an entry for port 80 and now the site won't load at all. If I re-add the 443 configuration it loads fine. What is causing it to require that? Why can't I set it up to run without SSL? Instead of just failing it should just load the page without HTTPS. If I disable port 443 and then I browse via HTTP, it STILL fails even though I am not trying to use HTTPS. What gives? When/where/how does it decide to use SSL?

• connections on port 80 suddenly refused / server not responding

  my dedicated server stopped responding to requests on port 80 today out of sudden, i havent touched anything in more than a month. its ubuntu 10, varnish + nginx + php-fpm, only 1 website. load is at 0. i messaged my ISP if they changed something but no reply yet. i tried to access the site via http://web-sniffer.net/ and it times out on port 80, but if i connect directly to nginx on port 8080 it loads just fine. for normal users, it doesnt load on neither of these in normal browser. any tips what to check or what could be causing this?

• Word 2010 doc skips pages

  A Word document with 9 pages, 3 section brakes next page (no odd and even breaks used) and inserted page numbers shows the correct sequence of pages when moving thru the document. When I change the page numbers in section 2 to start from 1 (Section 1 is only one page numbered with a roman numeral.) Then two strange things happen: The sequence in the status bar goes from 1 to 3. Page 2 disappeared (no text is missing) and my total number of pages reads 10 when i actually only have 9. The first page has a table of contents. Page 2 is listed, but when I press ctrl + click the shortcut it goes to page 4?

• Should I upgrade memory for my dedicated server?

  My memory usage hangs around 25% (swap is generally 1%) on my dedicated server and load is around 2-5. My host recommended that I upgrade from 2GB of ram to 4GB so that I can increase my innodb_buffer from the default 16MB to 2GB. My innodb table size is 2GB. My question is, given that ram usage is 25% does it make sense to upgrade ram? Queries are hanging sometimes, so I'm thinking that a bigger innodb_buffer could decrease load on the database, just not sure if I really need to upgrade my ram first.

• Soap client call has slow performance

  OS is Centos 6.2 with PHP 5.3.15. We have a Facebook application that is using PHP soap web services. We sometimes experince slow preformance when connecting to these services, but we cant understand what exacly is causing the problem. We've try to analyse the behavior using the profiling tool Kcachgrind. Here is a call graph from the index.php page that took 21 seconds to load. You can clearly see that calling the soap client is the bottle neck. I've also noticed that exactly before the page finishes to load, this file is being created in our serve's /tmp folder: wsdl-apache-d1032d85dfd16c0d91a6b70facc70e43 These are the permission of /tmp drwxrwxrwt 6 root root 40960 Aug 30 10:39 tmp I know its not the most specific question, but if any one had similar performance issues with soap client, We would love some ideas about what can cause this kind of performance problem, what can we do to investigate more accurately or how to overcome the problem ? • Ubuntu works in try out but not when installed, how to fix?

  I've got quite a problem with it, perhaps the problem lies with me but I thought I fixed it, I believe the opposite now... Anyhow, I started off with a 64-Bit Windows 7 platform and I wanted something new then the same boring windows, I heard about Ubuntu before but I didn't see a reason to change it. Now I had found my reason, so what did I do was do the installation via an USB, I went "try out before installation" first and it worked perfectly, however... When I installed it, deleted my Window 7 and tried to reboot with my fresh oh-so-clean new OS, it didn't want to load. At a certain point it said to boot up from a bootable option or something like that. Where it came to was that I couldn't load it up. Now, I wanted to switch back to Windows 7 because it didn't work and now I can't switch back because my harddrive switched modus because of Linux files (From NTFS to 4ex or something, I forgot). I'm currently typing this in the try out version of Ubuntu since I can't switch back to either Windows 7 or to the installed version of Ubuntu. So, my question follows: Can I fix it by keeping Ubuntu? Because I like Ubuntu. Also a side note: I'm a total noob when it comes down to this sort of things.

• Apache Connection vs. Request

  I apologize in advance if this is a basic question, but I am quite confused after reading the Apache documentation and other tutorials. Does a single Apache prefork process serve all HTTP requests for a given client? That's what I thought, but when I reduce maxclients down to a low number, my page load times go to a crawl. This despite the fact I'm the only client on the server in question. This would suggest each process serves a single HTTP request at a time, rather than serving all requests within the TimeOut window. So if a single webpage requires 15 HTTP requests to load fully, do I require 15 prefork Apache processes to optimally serve it?

• jquery is not working over local network [migrated]

• Batch print, reprint and scan

  I am using ubuntu 13.10 with Epson wireless scanner/printer/fax WF 2540(It has an automatic document feeder- ADF). What I am trying to achieve is to be able to print with confidence over already populated A4 pages(hand drawn or otherwise). The idea is to get a batch of A4 pages grouped in a particular order and have them batch printed on specific parts of each page ,viewed on screen and edit/processed page by page. My idea was to batch scan the documents in order and display each scanned page to use that to judge/fit on-screen the coordinates for the output of each pages image... The easiest way to explain this is to look at these slide : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Kuhf6iBidTNUl3U1NtT0pGbnc/edit?usp=sharing I would like to have this automated as much as possible using this printer but I am open to other suggestions. Are there any other better printers that can automatically scan and print at the document that is being scanned...with an accurate positioning in relation to elements already printed on the page?? Are there any other forums I should be asking and looking for answer/suggestions on my case/dilema??

• Drawning with canvas - problem with sizing [closed]

• Creating a multi-tenant application using PostgreSQL's schemas and Rails

  Stuff I've already figured out I'm learning how to create a multi-tenant application in Rails that serves data from different schemas based on what domain or subdomain is used to view the application. I already have a few concerns answered: How can you get subdomain-fu to work with domains as well? Here's someone that asked the same question which leads you to this blog. What database, and how will it be structured? Here's an excellent talk by Guy Naor, and good question about PostgreSQL and schemas. I already know my schemas will all have the same structure. They will differ in the data they hold. So, how can you run migrations for all schemas? Here's an answer. Those three points cover a lot of the general stuff I need to know. However, in the next steps I seem to have many ways of implementing things. I'm hoping that there's a better, easier way. Finally, to my question When a new user signs up, I can easily create the schema. However, what would be the best and easiest way to load the structure that the rest of the schemas already have? Here are some questions/scenarios that might give you a better idea. Should I pass it on to a shell script that dumps the public schema into a temporary one, and imports it back to my main database (pretty much like what Guy Naor says in his video)? Here's a quick summary/script I got from the helpful #postgres on freenode. While this will probably work, I'm gonna have to do a lot of stuff outside of Rails, which makes me a bit uncomfortable.. which also brings me to the next question. Is there a way to do this straight from Ruby on Rails? Like create a PostgreSQL schema, then just load the Rails database schema (schema.rb - I know, it's confusing) into that PostgreSQL schema. Is there a gem/plugin that has these things already? Methods like "create_pg_schema_and_load_rails_schema(the_new_schema_name)". If there's none, I'll probably work at making one, but I'm doubtful about how well tested it'll be with all the moving parts (especially if I end up using a shell script to create and manage new PostgreSQL schemas). • Simple jquery ajax call leaks memory in ie.

  I created a web page that makes an ajax call every second. In Internet Explorer 7, it leaks memory badly (20MB in about 15 minutes). The program is very simple. It just runs a javascript function that makes an ajax call. The server returns an empty string, and the javascript does nothing with it. I use setTimout to run the function every second, and I'm using Drip to watch the thing. I'm not doing anything with the DOM, and if I comment out the ajax call, the memory leak stops. So it looks like the leak is entirely in the ajax call. Does jquery ajax inherently create some sort of circular reference, and if so, how can I free it? By the way, it doesn't leak in Firefox. Someone suggested running the test in another VM and see if the results are the same. Rather than setting up another VM, I found a laptop that was running XP Home with IE8. It exhibits the same problem. I tried some older versions of jquery and got better results, but the problem didn't go away entirely until I abandoned ajax in jquery and went with more traditional (and ugly) ajax.

• mouse to Three.js world coordinates during TrackballControls

  I know there are a lot of answers how to translate the mouse coordinates to the Three.js world coordinates (I prefere this one). But I have troubles on calculating when using TrackballControls. First what I expect to do: I want to add a zoom function to my scene. Not by the mouse wheel, the user should be able to draw a rectangular and by lifting the mouse button, the camera is zooming on this rectangular. I've implemented all and it works, but only when the user didn't rotate/zoom/pan with TrackballControls! If the camera was manipulated, I get wrong coordinates for my drawn rectangular. I really can't figure out why... I only know that it's an issue with TrackballControls, because without them, it works. Does anyone see my mistake? • Installshield Development Error durring the Installation process

  Hey guys, I've been stuck by a problem for the past couple days that makes no sense to me. My installer builds fine in the Installshiled IDE but when it is about to finish the installation, int gets two errors then rollbacks: installation failure. Right when the install bar is at about 100%, an error box pops up that states this: "Error 1001.Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileLoadException: Attempt to load an unverifiable executable with fixups (IAT with more than 2 sections or a TLS section.) (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131019)." The box pops up once, then the installer flashes its status to "rollback" then pops up another error box, then once 'ok'ed it procedes to rollback as usual. For some reason it looks like to me that installshield is trying to launch my program before it finishes the installation, even when I told it to prompt the user to decide to launch. Is this a registering command system that makes it attemp or what? I've been scouring the web all day and I've found some ideas, but I havent seen any solutions as of yet. The installers that I've tried(and failed) have always needed to be Setup.exes, when i try to build a .msi only setup I get this error message. It may help someone who knows more about this system than I do. Your project contains InstallShield prerequisites. A Setup.exe setup launcher is required if you are build a release that includes InstallShield prerequisites. Change your release settings to build Setup.exe, or remove the prerequisites from your project. -7076 There's nothing on the site that has anything from the error code, so I'm at a loss.   I'm using Microsoft's DSOFramer control to allow me to embed an Excel file in my dialog so the user can choose his sheet, then select his range of cells; it's used with an import button on my dialog. The problem is that when I call the DSOFramer's OPEN function, if I have Excel open in another window, it closes the Excel document (but leaves Excel running). If the document it tries to close has unsaved data, I get a dialog boxclosing Excel doc in another window. If unsaved data in file, dsoframer fails to open with a messagebox: "Attempt to access invalid address". I built the source, and stepped through, and its making a call in its CDsoDocObject::CreateFromFile function, calling BindToObject on an object of class IMoniker. The HR is 0x8001010a "The message filter indicated that the application is busy". On that failure, it tries to InstantiateDocObjectServer by classid of CLSID Microsoft Excel Worksheet... this fails with an HRESULT of 0x80040154 "Class not registered". The InstantiateDocObjectServer just calls CoCreateInstance on the classid, first with CLSCTX_LOCAL_SERVER, then (if that fails) with CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER. I know DSOFramer is a popular sample project for embedding Office apps in various dialogs and forms. I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and might have some insight on how I can solve this. I really don't want it to close any other open Excel documents, and I really don't want it to error-out if it can't close the document due to unsaved data. Update 1: I've tried changing the classid that's passed in to "Excel.Application" (I know that class will resolve), but that didn't work. In CDsoDocObject, it tries to open key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\DocObject", but fails. I've visually confirmed that the key is not present in my registry; The key is present for the guid, but there's no DocObject subkey. It then produces an error message box: "The associated COM server does not support ActiveX document embedding". I get similar (different key, of course) results when I try to use the Excel.Workbook programid. Update 2: I tried starting a 2nd instance of Excel, hoping that my automation would bind to it (being the most recently invoked) instead of the problem Excel instance, but it didn't seem to do that. Results were the same. My problem seems to have boiled down to this: I'm calling the BindToObject on an object of class IMoniker, and receiving 0x8001010A (RPC_E_SERVERCALL_RETRYLATER) "The message filter indicated that the application is busy". I've tried playing with the flags passed to the BindToObject (via the SetBindOptions), but nothing seems to make any difference. Update 3: It first tries to bind using an IMoniker class. If that fails, it calls CoCreateInstance for the clsid as a "fallback" method. This may work for other MS Office objects, but when it's Excel, the class is for the Worksheet. I modified the sample to CoCreateInstance _Application, then got the workbooks, then called the Workbooks::Open for the target file, which returns a Worksheet object. I then returned that pointer and merged back with the original sample code path. All working now.
