• What can I learn to build a (kind of) recommendation system?

  I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.

  1) I have quite a lot of interest in game programming and I (to my thought) am quite good at programming skills, I have developed some console based animations and text based animation games (like copter-it, snake, and a music visualization), should I invest in game programming? I have 2 years at college left. 2) If I am to pursue a career in game programming, and I select to go only with c++ and DirectX, is it enough? is assembly language necessary? 3) is Visual C++ or MFC dead? should I invest in it or not? 4) I am unable to find any reference book for Visual C++ 2008 or later (just like C++ the complete reference book) I need a book that covers the basic fundamentals and covers the most of the libraries etc.

• Does anyone write games in Delphi?

  I am a very seasoned Delphi developer (over 12 years of experience not counting my Turbo Pascal experience) and was wondering does anyone write games in Delphi? I have seen DirectX API wrappers in Delphi that allow you to program against DirectX (even wrote a simple solitaire game with a friend), but haven't seen anything out there that shows me that I should keep up with Delphi. I just hate to walk away from so much knowledge and Object Pascal language, but I am not seeing much as to a reason to keep going with Delphi. I currently program in C# and thinking about XNA, but it seems to me that the dominating opinion is go C/C++ route with DirectX. Any other Delphi developers out there struggle with this too? • Is Java a good choice for small to medium size websites? [closed]

  Why do I ask? I want to use one language not two. Yes I know with Java and .NET I can program anything, but, as a website it should have a good design, I don't want to build ugly sites. Which is why for smaller sites I use PHP, I can get the e-comm I want and also a nice UI pretty easily, unlike in ASP.NET. But would I run into this design rstriction with Java (I've never used it). Plus, Java would also give me exposure to Android development. So..then I could ditch PHP? I guess I am looking for the 'one ring to rule them all', and not 2 or 3 (languages). Thanks in advance,

• Running the Ubuntu Kernel and OS on custom processor

  This is hardly a theoretical question as many have done this, albeit there's very little information on the underlying processes. I'm developing a custom MIPS-based processor on which I would like to run ubuntu. I'm quite baffled as to what to do next after you've designed the instruction set and the computer architecture itself. I need to be able to run a kernel and OS but how does it all tie in? At the moment I'm researching into designing a compiler for the linux kernel to generate the appropriate assembly language. Is that a good way to go? What do I need to do after that?

• Remmina password problem with windows server 2008 R2

  I use Ubuntu 12.04. I am already using Remmina both with RDP and VNC connections for several servers. For one of my servers I have a problem to login after login window opens. The server is Windows 2008 R2. The screen for entering user and password comes but does not accept the password. I guess the problem is with language but password does not contain any problematic letter except a $ sign. When connecting from Windows 7 there is no problem.

• Is this a typo in the Artistic License 2.0?

  I'm not sure if this would fit better in StackExchange/English, but regardless, there is no practical use to the answer, other than to cure my curiosity. Note this sentence at the end of the Artistic License 2.0: THE PACKAGE IS PROVIDED BY THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER AND CONTRIBUTORS "AS IS' AND WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES. It does not affect any legal aspects of the license, but is there a reason they mixed the use of single and double quotes on AS IS? The license is so new that this wouldn't have been for "command prompt friendly" reasons. Is there special use or meaning behind this in the English language, or was it a typo?

• Java - learning with a simple project

  I remember when I learnt PHP, it was suggested that I code a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals and syntax. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would learn about PHP in a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. I am now learning Java, and reading the book Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book. Thanks.

• How do you manage all of the information you have learned and found? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

• How many LOC/day "top" (google, MS, FB) engeneers produce? [closed]

  I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

  I just wanted to say hello and ask a few simple questions. I have recently dove into programming with c# and have been curious what everyone else's experiences have been with when learning and starting out. What are some things that you can say that really have made a difference in your understanding and usages of any particular language? I lurk several forums but for some reason have always just kept to myself, and I've realized today that I'm not fully utilizing my resources when it comes to interacting with the community. With that being said, I realize that everyone that is interested in programming inherently is a natural problem solver and would like also to ask you to share your process of learning. Are you the type to have a short term project to tackle a general set of problems you're likely to encounter? Or are you a type of programmer that practices by zeroing in on a specific few problems you would like to solve? Any reply will be greatly appreciated Thank you :)

• Ubuntu 12.04 ATI 6450

  Right now my video card isn't responding after the Ubuntu Logo is shown, (I see a black screen and that's it) I have installed ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 and if I remove the video card and use the VGA from the MOBO then I can use it with no problems, other data: 4 GB of ram 1333 500 GB WD AMD APU A6 3500 2,1 GHZ I forgot a couple of details, everything was working great until last night, when the light went off (I don't know if I'm explaining myself I'm from Argentina and english isn't my first language there was a power cut I meant) and then when it got back I used my pc until I went to bed (after upgrading) and this morning, when I woke up I had this problem for breakfast, I've been reading a little and I had a similar problem before and fixed it, but it was a system problem, a missing package or something, I don't remember, but here the only issue is that the video card doesn't give me image after the ubuntu logo.

  I've worked with jQuery over the years. However, recently, I've found myself getting deeper into the JavaScript language. Recently, I've heard about "truthy" and falsey values. However, I don't fully understand them. Currently, I have some code that looks like this: var fields = options.fields || ['id', 'query']; I need to identify if fields is null, undefined, or has a length of 0. I know the long way is to do: if ((fields === null) || (fields === undefined) || (fields.length === 0)) { ... } My question is, is the following the same: if (!fields) { ... } Thank you!

• Getting URLs from search results

  After 1 months research I basically give up on getting all URL's from a search results programmatically, I looked at Google Search API to find a way to get millions of search results "URL's" to be specific to a text file or something relative but no success, but I am 100% there must be a way or trick of doing it. Real Question : Is there anyway programmatically or manually I can get 1000+ search results (URLs using search query e.g. "Apple" returns million of results on google and I want as much as possible URLs of them results in a text file) Note : Don't care for any specific search engine or programming language or technique or software or just point me to right direction, but yeah I tried it with google API i can't get more then 100 results at all.

  I'm writing blog at Wordpress, and bought Domain park for it for a shorter web address for my readers who I redirect to my blog. Yesterday there was a first time message titled "Account Suspended due to registration information verification failure". I've never changed my contact information at my Web Host, and my contact Information has not been changed. I have Fan page on Facebook too, that my readers' could follow my blog easier, and there was same kind of message on my Facebook site too. Can you tell me, what's going on? I've not been broking any terms of use at my host, and writing good language on my blog. I think it's a some kind of hacker -thing? Is there nothing else to do than contact my web host that they can fix the problem? Can they? I Contacted last night my host, but got no answer yet.

  Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer far from it, but I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers, I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up.   Alright, I think it's a simple question, but I got difficulties to find some answers around. I already read that XNA wouldn't be in Visual Studio 2012. I recently learned to use XNA, but since I would like to work on games, I'd like to know if there's a way to develop games using C# on Visual Studio 2012, or if I should learn everything again using C++ and Direct3D? • Which C# Book to take?

  I was searching for a book to learn C#, but now i'm kinda stuck. I found many people asking the same question, and many people gave answers, but there are so many books about C# that it is really hard to decide which one to take. Now i reduced my choice on two books, but I just can't decide between them. Namely, there are: Programming C# 4.0 and C# 4.0 In A Nutshell The first thing I want to know, are these good choices? I'm not completely new to programming, but I just didn't find the right language until know, but i think C# is the one I was searching for. I know all the bassic stuff from Delphi/Java/Python so I think i'm not a complete beginner in programming. Is there anyone out there that read both books and can cleary explain whats the difference between them? I haven't found many reviews and sort of, so I just don't know which one to chose. Or is there any book that is better suiting me?

  My name is Sael and I'm 14 years old. Since I was 12 and I got my first computer I instantly go interested in making games. So of course like any other I googled it, got discouraged and forgot about it for a few months. When I was 13 I decided to continue programming, and decided that java would best suit me. Now after a year, I have a basic understanding of java and how it works (it just clicked instantly one day). Anyways, my problem is that I know how I'm going to make a simple game in my head, but as soon as I click that "New Project" button on eclipse, I'm instantly lost and can't figure out where to start. I can't do much without a tutorial beside me since my mind is so dependent on it.   Most of the time people ask which programming language to learn which I know is not valid question to ask here and I don't care about 'which' here, I care about 'How'. So, how do I start learning programming from scratch? in other words, what are the steps for absolute beginner to learn programming the right way? I'm sure buying a book and reading it is not the only way in this case. • Prefer examples over Documentation. Is it a behavioral problem?

  Whenever I come across a new api or programming language or even simple Linux MAN pages, I always (ever since I remember) avoided then and instead lazily relied on examples for gaining understanding of new concepts. Subconsciously, I avoid documentation/api whenever it is not straight forward or cryptic or just plain boring. It's been years since I began programming and now I feel like I need to mend my ways as I now realize that I'm causing more damage by refraining from reading cryptic/difficult documentation as it is still a million times better than examples as the official documentation has more coverage than any example out there. So even after realizing that examples should be treated as "added" value instead of the "primary" source for learning. How do I break this bad habit as a programmer or am I over thinking? Any wisdom from fellow programmers is appreciated.

  After spending a year and a half working on M, Ive decided to make another change in what Im doing and and move over to the SQL Server Programmability team. Thats the team responsible for things like the T-SQL language and runtime in SQL Server.
