  • Windows 8 taking 4+ mins to shutdown

    I did a fresh installation of Windows 8 64 bit, build 9200 (released on aug 16th). I installed the drivers and some basic softwares like NetBeans, mingw, iis server and php. For the first few times, it was restarting normally. But then at shutdown, it would show the shutdown screen for some seconds and then turn black for about 4 mins (similar to what happens at hibernation). I disabled the "fast startup" option in power options, but the problem still persists. Windows 7 and Ubuntu shut down normally. specs: 4gb ram, 750 gb sata hdd, solved by installing Windows Updates released during October. It was a serious bug in the OS, afaik. Now even hibernate takes upto 30 secs max. Still, win 8 is too buggy for release.

    I want to load a image (.bmp) file on a Win32 application, but I do not want to use the standard LoadBitmap/LoadImage from Windows API: I want it to load from a buffer that is already in memory. I can easily load a bitmap directly from file and print it on the screen, but this issue is making me stuck :( What I'm looking for is a function that works like this: HBITMAP LoadBitmapFromBuffer(char* buffer, int width, int height); Thanks.

    We need 15 minute warm updates from one SQL Server to another. Log Shipping looks good and appears easy to setup. We are also looking into Transactional Replication. The data only needs to copy one way. We have two main requirements: 1) The destination database needs to be a max 15 minute old copy of the source. It needs to re-try and get up-to-date if a network cable is unplugged for a while. 2) We would really like table (fields added or modified) changes in the source as easy as possible.   • Win 8 start screen resolution

    My screen resolution is 1280x1024 running Win 8 RP I formatted my computer and reinstalled Win 8 CP because I had too many BSODs. When I installed Win 8 CP and created a local account. I had 5(or 6) tiles per column. But once I switched to the Microsoft account to get my synced wallpaper and lock-screen, the Start screen resolution changed and I got a max 3 tiles per column. The size of all metro apps including the Settings app changed and became awkwardly bigger. Is there a way to get back 5 tiles per column? Essentially changing the resolution of the start screen?

    I just installed openjdk6-jre on Ubuntu 10.04 java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.2) (6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) Every time I run "java" I get this error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. This can be solved by specifying a maximum heap size and running "java -Xmx256m" But is there anyway to permanently fix this error (i.e. set the default heap size to 256MB so that I do not need to specify the max heap size every time I run the command)

    In chrome, safari, and opera setting the background image to an absolute reference such as: "/images/image.png" changes it to "http://sitepath/images/image.png". It does not do this in firefox. Is there any way to avoid this behavior, or is it written into the browser's javascript engine? Using jquery to set the background-image also does this problem. The problem is that I am posting the HTML to a php script that needs the urls in this specific format. I know that setting the image path relative fixes this, but I can't do that. The only other alternative would be to use a regexp. to convert the urls. Thanks. I'm thinking of using jQuery but would I be right in thinking the only way to do it is manually calculating the percentage of width/height where the shape layer should be placed, then using absolute positioning is the only way to do this? Both respond numbers 0...9 in every line. In case of first server each number is received every second. In case of second server there is no output for 10 seconds and entire output is displayed at once. What might be wrong int second case? I tried various uutput control Functions but it didn't help. I need to have high availability solution. So thinking setting up AWS but ELB will not be a solution... and max IP's I can get per instance is 12 addresses. So what can I do to have all 150 sites hosted on one instance and be HA with instance in different availability zone.
