  I have @contacts_added defined as follows: @contacts_added = Contact.all(:conditions => ["date_entered >?", 5.days.ago.to_date]) Each contact belongs_to a Company. I want to be able the count the number of distinct Companies that @contacts_added belong to. contacts_added will have many contacts that belong to a single company, accessible through a virtual attribute contacts_added.company_name How do I do that?

• Related Models in Rails 3

  Hi, I am just starting my first Rails 3 project and am having some difficulties. I have two related models, projects and clients. I have set up the relationships as has_many and belongs_to. However in my projects views I can only access the client_id of the project. I would like to access the client's name and other parameters. I am sure that previously in rails, I could just use project.client.name, but this is not working. Is there a new feature of Rails 3 that I have missed? Cheers

  I have a custom validation method that is exactly the same for two or more models. Where's the best place to put this validation method so that both models can access it and keep things DRY? If the validation fails, I also want to use errors.add_to_base, so wherever this method is put, I should be able to accommodate for that.

  is it possible to load only the latest associated record of an associated table? an example: class author attr_accessible :first_name, :last_name, :birthday has_many :books end class book attr_accessible :pages, :date of publication, :title belongs_to :author end Is there a way to generate a scope to load only the newest released book the author wrote? Or the book with the most pages? I know, that I could include or join all books. But I don't know if its possible to load only a specific book for each author. So that I could do a query like this: Author.authors_and_their_newest_book So that I could get these results first_name_author_1, last_name_author_1, birthday_author_1, pages_book_3, date of publication_book_3, title_book_3 first_name_author_2, last_name_author_2, birthday_author_2, pages_book_5, date of publication_book_5, title_book_5 first_name_author_3, last_name_author_3, birthday_author_3, pages_book_9, date of publication_book_9, title_book_9 ...

  I'm having trouble displaying my form at /users/2/friends/new. I'm receiving undefined method `friends_path' for #<#<Class:0x21f0c14>:0x21ef364> Here is the beginning of the form <% form_for(@friend) do |f| %> And the friends controller def new @user = User.find(params[:user_id]) @friend = @user.friends.build end This is the route resources :users do resources :friends end And the relevant path from "rake routes" users/:user_id/friends/new(.:format) {:controller=>"friends", :action=>"new"} Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. • ActiveRecord validates... custom field name.

  I would like to fix up some error messages my site generates. Here is the problem: class Brand < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :foo ... end My goal is to make a message "Ticket description is required" instead of "Foo is required" or may not be blank, or whatever. The reason this is so important is because lets say previously the field was ticket_summary. That was great and the server was coded to use that, but now due to crazy-insane business analysts it has been determined that ticket_summary is a poor name, and should be ticket_description. Now I don't necessarily want to have my db be driven by the user requirements for field names, especially since they can change frequently without functionality changes. Is there a mechanism for providing this already?

• Running a loop (such as one for a mock webserver) within a thread

  I'm trying to run a mock webserver within a thread within a class. I've tried passing the class' @server property to the thread block but as soon as I try to do server.accept the thread stops. Is there some way to make this work? I want to basically be able to run a webserver off of this script while still taking user input via stdin.gets.   I'm building an app which will allow a user to scan the barcode on a 'shelf', 'box' or 'product' which will then bring up that particular item or all the associated items. As these are all separate models with their own ID's, I need a global ID table. I was thinking of a polymorphic table called 'barcodes' barcodes id barcode_number barcodable Is there an easy way to do this? Or is polymorphic the best way?

  I have this in my Rails controller: def download_clip send_file "public/output.mp4", :type=>"video/mp4", :filename => "output.mp4", :disposition => 'attachment' end and in my HTML code I have this: <a href="download_clip/"></a> Now could somebody tell me why Firefox's download window will NOT pou up, but chrome downloads the file fine? Instead firefox opens a new window and starts playing the file. I WANT THE DOWNLOAD BOX to POPUP. I have spend too much time on it

• Selecting favourites from DB rails 3

  I have a small app which has Users, Recipes, Ingredients and preparation models A user has many recipes, recipes belong to user and ingredients/preparation belongs to recipes. Now a user can view all recipes but I would like the option to add the particular recipe to a favourites list. Would I need to set a new DB to hold this and then link by associations or could I add a column to the recipe model called fav for example? Im looking for the best practice here or if someone has done this before and can offer any advice that would be appreciated

  I am trying to create a self join table that represents a list of customers who can refer each other (perhaps to a product or a program). I am trying to limit my model to just one class, "Customer". However, I keep getting an empty array when accessing referrals: @customer.referrals ... returns []. I ran binding.pry to see what SQL was being run, given a customer who has a "referer" and should have several referrals. This is the SQL being executed. Customer Load (0.3ms) SELECT "customers".* FROM "customers" WHERE "customers"."id" = ? ORDER BY "customers"."id" ASC LIMIT 1 [["id", 2]] Customer Exists (0.2ms) SELECT 1 AS one FROM "customers" WHERE "customers"."referring_customer_id" = ? AND "customers"."referring_customer_id" = 'id' LIMIT 1 [["referring_customer_id", 3]] I'm a bit lost and am unsure where my problem lies. I don't think my query is correct -- @customer.referrals should return an array of all the referrals, which are the customers who have @customer.id as their referring_customer_id.

Is there a one-liner in Rails that takes care of this? for example and this is totally made up: Object.find(:all, :include => :updated_object) Currently I'm sending the object that is getting updated to the definition that calculates the percentage and that works but it's making things messy.

  I have an application where a user can vote on reviews. They can vote up or down. Now when there's a listing of reviews, I have a problem targeting the review the user voted on. I'm using a respon_to block in my rails controller and responding with js. So for instance, I have a vote_up method, and a vote_up.js.erb template. in that template, I have the following: var id = $('article.comment').attr('id').split('_')[1]; alert("id: " + id); $('.votecomment_' + id).find('.score').html("<%= @review2.vote_total %>"); I'm just alerting the id. The problem is that the id always returns the value of the first review found on the page. How can I pass the context aka this, to javascript, so I can figure out which review to target?

• Getting rails to execute root level file edits on system files without compromising security.

  I'm writing a Rails 3 application that needs to be able to trigger modifications to unix system config files. I'd like to insulate the file modifications from the consumer side by running them in a background process. I've considered writing out a temp file in rails and then copying the file with a bash script but that doesn't really insulate the system. I've also considered pulling from the database manually with a cron based script and updating the configs. But what I would really like is a component that can hook into the rails environment, read out what is needed from the database, and update the config files. This process needs to be run as root because the config files mostly live in /etc/whatever. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  Hi, I'm relatively new to Watir but can find no good documentation (examples) regarding how to check if an element exists. There are the API specs, of course, but these make precious little sense to me if I don't find an example. I've tried both combinations but nothing seems to work... if browser.image (:src "/media/images/icons/reviewertools/editreview.jpg").exists then... if browser.image (:src "/media/images/icons/reviewertools/editreview.jpg").exists? then... If anyone has a concrete suggestion as per how to implement this, please help! Thanks!

  Hi i'm doing a fb app that update the status box(what's in your mind), i'm using set_status from facebooker .. first i have this error: set_status needs extended permission so i google it and find this: before_filter :ensure_has_status_update .. so i put it in my controller and that solves the problem, but when i try to update the status, all ways redirect me to a fb page that says: You have already granted permissions to this application. so i go to the controller comment before_filter :ensure_has_status_update and then go to my app again and it works.. so i want to do this if (has_status_update == false) ask for permision else update the status i google it for a long time but i can't find an answer..

I know I can write a method def freq_bands for User but I would like to know if it is possible to have has_many freq_bands for a User. In this way I can chain the call. What I would like to have is class User < ActiveRecor::Base has_many :frequence_bands, :through => phones end I think it is possible to have nested has_many using this plugin http://github.com/ianwhite/nested_has_many_through However if possible I would like to avoid using another plugin and rely solely on rails.

• counter_cache not updating on the model after save

  I am using a counter_cache to let MySQL do some of the bookkeeping for me: class Container has_many :items end class Item belongs_to :container, :counter_cache => true end Now, if I do this: container = Container.find(57) item = Item.new item.container = container item.save in the SQL log there will be an INSERT followed by something like: UPDATE `containers` SET `items_count` = COALESCE(`items_count`, 0) + 1 WHERE `containers`.`id` = 57 which is what I expected it to do. However, the container[:items_count] will be stale! ...unless I container.reload to pick up the updated value. Which in my mind sort of defeats part of the purpose of using the :counter_cache in favor of a custom built one, especially since I may not actually want a reload before I try to access the items_count attribute. (My models are pretty code-heavy because of the nature of the domain logic, so I sometimes have to save and create multiple things in one controller call.) I understand I can tinker with callbacks myself but this seems to me a fairly basic expectation of the simple feature. Again, if I have to write additional code to make it fully work, it might as well be easier to implement a custom counter. What am I doing/assuming wrong?
