  • Is there server-side code which is not cross browser compatible?

    Was there a case in any server-side language where a code did not work in a browser while it did work in the rest? I am asking this because I can't imagine such a scenario because server-side code runs in the server, not in the browser but I have seen discussions where, as said, there were "server-side browser compatibility issues". I can't seem to recall where I have read it. Thanks in advance :)

Am I wrong here?: If I create a symbolic link within a folder in my %PATH%, the referenced directory should work as if it had actually been added to %PATH%, right?

  • Why are functional languages considered a boon for multi threaded environments?

    I hear a lot about functional languages, and how they scale well because there is no state around a function; and therefore that function can be massively parallelized. However, this makes little sense to me because almost all real-world practical programs need/have state to take care of. I also find it interesting that most major scaling libraries, i.e. MapReduce, are typically written in imperative languages like C or C++. I'd like to hear from the functional camp where this hype I'm hearing is coming from....

    I'm trying to calcuate size of each cell (containing text like "ff" or "a0"), so that 32 cells will fit into window by width. However, charWidth*2 doesn' represent the width of a cell, since it doesn't take spacing between characters in the account. How can I obtain size of a font so that 32 cells each is two chars like "ff" fit exactly into window's client area ? Curier is fixed-width font.   • Using function arguments to dynamically generate a query

    I am working on an issue management system, developed in PHP/MySQL. It requires search functionality, where the user will mention the search parameters and based on these parameters the system will return the result set. To solve this I am trying to write a function and all the user selected parameters are passed as arguments. Based on the arguments I will dynamically generate the query. Sample Query: select * from tickets inner join ticket_assigned_to on tickets.id=ticket_assigned_to.ticket_id where tickets.project_id= in ('') and tickets.status in ('') and ticket_assigned_to.user_id in ('') and tickets.reporter_user_id='' and tickets.operator_user_id in ('') and tickets.due_date between '' and '' and tickets.ts_created between '' and ''; I also need to handle cases where the arguments can be ORed or ANDed in the query. For example: select * from tickets inner join ticket_assigned_to on tickets.id=ticket_assigned_to.ticket_id where tickets.project_id= in ('') and tickets.status in ('') or tickets.due_date = '' or tickets.ts_created between '' and ''; I am also planning to use the same function at other places in the project also. Like to display all the tickets of a user or all tickets created between given dates and so on... How to handle this situation? Should I go with a single function which handles all this or numerous small functions? Need guidance here.

    Just wondering how you all manage your workload effectively when there's a lot of your plate? What do you do to break it down into bite-size chunks and how do you track progress of each task? Do you find TDD helps to focus your attention of getting areas of functionality complete before moving onto the next one? I quite often find myself getting a bit overwhelmed when I have an involving task on the go (even if it can be broken down into lots of small chunks), even though I know I'm more than capable of doing the work.     I'm trying to build an algebra trainer for students. I want to construct a representative problem, define constraints and relationships on the parameters, and then generate a bunch of Latex formatted problems from the representation. As an example: A specific question might be: If y < 0 and (x+3)(y-5) = 0, what is x? Answer (x = -3) I would like to encode this as a Latex formatted problem like. If $y<0$ and $(x+constant_1)(y+constant_2)=0$ what is the value of x? Answer = -constant_1 And plug into my problem solver constant_1 > 0, constant_1 < 60, constant_1 = INTEGER constant_2 < 0, constant_2 > -60, constant_2 = INTEGER Then it will randomly construct me pairs of (constant_1, constant_2) that I can feed into my Latex generator. Obviously this is an extremely simple example with no real "solving" but hopefully it gets the point across. Things I'm looking for ideally in priority order * Solve algebra problems * Definition of relationships relatively straight forward * Rich support for latex formatting (not just writing encoded strings) Thanks!

  • Are there any code critique sites or similar resources?

    I have noticed when people post example code illustrating some issue that they are having often they will gather a number of comments addressing the quality of the code they presented and not the actual problem asked. This is very helpful--if not well directed. Often, this is wasted effort since the asker is often not receptive and the code is often chopped down to something small to post leaving lots of rough edges. In the old days you would see people asking questions like this on comp.lang.lisp and other parts of the comp.lang hierarchy. But that bit of the net kind of sank into the sewers of neglect. Is there a comparable one-stop-shop today? I am partially asking for selfish reasons, I know how to write good idiomatic C, Lisp, O'Caml, and Java code. But I learned C++ pre-template and STL, those rusty skills are not really applicable to today's C++. I have picked up languages like Scala in a vacuum and get by, but am I really doing it correctly? There are so many ways you can abuse a language, I am currently working against a codebase of Fortran written in C, and I recognize and loathe the "that guy" who wrote it. I don't want to be someone else's "that guy" if I can help it. Just because it works does not mean that one did not totally miss the boat on how it should have been done. Do you seek out this type of critique? If so how, where and why? What types of benefits do you derive from it? How about abuse and trolls?
