• Series On Embedded Development (Part 2) - Build-Time Optionality

  In this entry on embedded development, I'm going to discuss build-time optionality (BTO). BTO is the ability to subset your software at build-time so you only use what is needed. BTO typically pertains more to software providers rather then developers of final products. For example, software providers ship source products, frameworks or platforms which are used by developers to build other products. If you provide a source product, you probably don't have to do anything to support BTO as the developers using your source will only use the source they need to build their product. If you provide a framework, then there are some things you can do to support BTO. Say you provide a Java framework which supports audio and video. If you provide this framework in a single JAR, then developers who only want audio are forced to ship their product with the video portion of your framework even though they aren't using it. In this case, support providing the framework in separate JARs...break the framework into an audio JAR and a video JAR and let the users of your framework decide which JARs to include in their product. Sometimes this is as simple as packaging, but if, for example, the video functionality is dependent on the audio functionality, it may require coding work to cleanly separate the two. BTO can also work at install-time, and this is sometimes overlooked. Let's say your building a phone application which can use Near Field Communications (NFC) if it's available on the phone, but it doesn't require NFC to work. Typically you'd write one app for all phones (saving you time)...both those that have NFC and those that don't, and just use NFC if it's there. However, for better efficiency, you can detect at install-time if the phone supports NFC and not install the NFC portion of your app if the phone doesn't support NFC. This requires that you write the app so it can run without the optional NFC code and that you write your install app so it can detect NFC and do the right thing at install-time. Supporting install-time optionality will save persistent footprint on the phone, something your customers will appreciate, your app "neighbors" will appreciate, and that you'll appreciate when they save static footprint for you. • Need help making an ODBC MySQL Connection

  Short Version: How do I connect from PowerShell to an ODBC 5.1 MySQL Driver? I can't seem to find any connection strings that accurately have a "Provider" field for this particular instance. (See bottom of this question for examples/errors) ===== Long Version: I'm not a server guy, and I've been handed the task of setting up PowerGadgets on our network. I have a MySQL server running on a Linux box, that is configured for remote access and has a user defined for remote access as well. On my windows desktop PC, I have PowerGadgets installed. I installed the MySQL ODBC 5.1 connector, and went to Control Panel Data Sources and set up a User DSN connection to the database. The connection, user, and pass seem to be correct because it lists the tables of the database in my windows control panel. Where I'm running into trouble is in 3 places in PowerGadgets: When selecting a data source, I can select "SQL Server". Inputting the servers IP address does not work and I can't get this option to work at all. When selecting a data source, I can select "OleDB". This screen has a wizard on it, that appears to populate all the correct information (including database table names!) for me. "Test Connection" runs great. But if I try to complete the wizard, I get the error "The .NET Framework data provider for OLEDB does not support the MS Ole DB provider for ODBC Drivers." When selecting a data source, I can select "ODBC". This screen does not have a wizard and I cannot figure out a "connection string" that works. Typically it will respond with the error "The field 'Provider' is missing". Googling ODBC connection strings doesn't reveal any examples with a "provider" field and have no idea what to put in here. The connection string (for #2) above contains "SQLOLEDB" as a provider, and upon inputting that value into this connection string I get the same connection error that #2 gets. I believe I can solve my problems by figuring out a connection string for #3 but don't know where to get started. (PowerGadgets also allows for PowerShell support but I believe I will run into the same problem there) == Here's my current PowerShell connection that doesn't work: invoke-sql -connection "Driver={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver};Initial Catalog=hq_live;Data Source=HQDB" -sql "Select * FROM accounts" Spits back the error: "Invoke-Sql : An OLE DB Provider was not specified in the ConnectionString. • Cisco IPSec, nat, and port forwarding don't play well together

  I have two Cisco ADSL modems configured conventionally to nat the inside traffic to the ISP. That works. I have two port forwards on one of them for SMTP and IMAP from the outside to the inside this provides external access to the mail server. This works. The modem doing the port forwarding also terminates PPTP VPN traffic. There are two DNS servers one inside the office which resolves mail to the local address, one outside the office which resolves mail for the rest of the world to the external interface. That all works. I recently added an IPSec VPN between the two modems and that works for every thing EXCEPT connections over the IPSec VPN to the mail server on port 25 or 143 from workstations on the remote lan. It would seem that the modem with the port forwards is confusing traffic from the mail server destined for a machine on the other side of the IPSec VPN for traffic that should go back to a port forward connection. PPTP VPN traffic to the mail server is fine. Is this a scenario anybody is familiar with and are there any suggestions on how to work around it? Many thanks Alan But wait there is more..... I bound a secondary ip address to mail server 192.168.1.244, changed the port forwards to use it while leaving all the local and IPSec traffic to use 192.168.1.241 and the problem was solved. • Upgrading php from php 5.3 to 5.4 .7

  So, quickly so to speak I have noticed this topic around, I have searched and there are plenty of solutions. However these solutions do not work for me, not only that but I'm intending to learn more about the Debian based OS. Questions I would like to know how to upgrade php5.3 to php 5.4.7 compiling it from source, myself without using a third-party ppa. Is the way (explained below) the correct way of configuring php5.4? I'm new to compiling from source. Set-up I run Ubuntu Server 12.04 64bit. I've currently got: PHP 5.3 MySQL-Server Apache2 Memcached The Problem So I initially installed php5.3 using apt-get. I now wish to upgrade the php 5.4 due to the advantage of traits in OOP and the struct with Arrays and all the other recent patches and such. Possible Solutions I've seen this ondrej/ppa repository, which I refuse to use, given the fact that it may work, but it's an unknown/untrusted source. ALso, i'm not learning how to administer from source, using configure, make and install accordingly. I've seen a solution compiling from source, which is essentially how I was hoping to go about it with some guidance. Conclusion So I didn't just expect to be spoon-fed, and I went out and did some manual reading and atleast started the ball rolling myself; this how far i've got. The first thing I did was su into root (to save the typing sudo all the darn time). $ sudo su The next thing I did was download the latest version of php (5.4.7) and extracted it's contents ready to configure before installing it. $ mkdir php5-new && cd !$ $ wget -O php-5.4.7.tar.bz2 http://php.net/get/php-5.4.7.tar.bz2/from/uk3.php.net/mirror $ bzip2 -d php-5.4.7.tar.bz2 $ tar xvf php-5.4.7.tar.gz $ cd php-5.4.7 $ ./configure --help Finally I decided to have a bash, I looked through the list of options and decided I needed to list ALL of the things I wanted to include in the configuration. $ ./configure --with-mysql --with-apache2 --with-libxml --with-openssl --with-zlib --with-bz2 --with-curl --with-dom --with-gd --with-imap --with-imap-ssl --with-mcrypt --with-mysqli --with-pdo-mysql --with-libxml --enable-ftp --enable-mbstring --enable-soap Finally, the results... When the configuration process had finished, it threw an error: configure: error: xml2-config not found. Please check your libxml2 installation.

• Windows 2003 Domain Controller Very Upset about NIC Teaming

  I set up BACS (Broadcom Teaming) to team two NIC on a Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain Controller. Networking still works okay, I can ping the gateway etc, but both DNS and Active Directory fail to start with various 40xx errors. The team that I created is Smart load Balancing with Failover, with one backup and only one in smart load balancing (So really it is just failover). I have the team the same IP address that the single active NIC had before. Anyone seen this before, or have any ideas what the problem might be?   I have installed unixODBC from source and mysql-odbc connector from .dmg installer on Mac OSX Lion. This was done a while ago, and at that time I successfully installed a data source (let's call it foo). Now I am trying to add another data source (DSN). I've done this through both ODBC Manager and the command-line tool myodbc-installer given with the tar bundle of the mysql-odbc connector from the mysql website.   I am using Memcached Session Manager to handle Tomcat sessions in non-sticky mode. My deployment in Azure consists of a Worker Role with two instances which connect to an Azure VM running my Memcached server. Everything works pretty well, my session is persisted and retrieved by any of the two instances transparently. The problem arises when the session is idle for about 4 minutes; everything points out that the Azure Loadbalancer is closing the spymemcached connection to the VM after some period of inactivity.   I've installed Python and yum from source (configure, make, make install), not using RPMs because that's leading to several other issues. So when I executed: # yum update ...   Forgive my ignorance, I am a JS programmer given the task to do DB replication using bucardo. I understand the concept of how bucardo works, but setting it up is a bit confusing. The set-up is: Lubuntu Linux Two databases test_master and test_slave, using PostgreSQL Each DB has a table named test, containing 2 columns: id (PK) and test (int) I use pgAdmin3 I have already added them to bucardo's list of databases and added all tables. Table: public.test DB: test_slave PK: id (int4) Table: public.test DB: test_master PK: id (int4) As you see, due to the fact that the DBs are identical, even the schema names are identical. So when I do: bucardo_ctl add herd sample_herd public.test Ok, so it got added to the herd. But this command gets confused which database public.test comes from. So when I add a sync: $ bucardo_ctl add sync sample_sync source=sample_herd targetdb=test_slave type=fullcopy Failed to add sync: DBD::Pg::st execute failed: ERROR: Source and target databases cannot be the same: test_slave at line 118. at line 30. CONTEXT: PL/Perl function "validate_sync" at /usr/bin/bucardo_ctl line 3362. What does it mean that source and target cannot be the same? If it got confused as to which public.test to use as source, how do I differentiate?

• MySQL tmpdir on /dev/shm with SELinux

  On RHEL5, I have a small MySQL database that has to write temp files. To speed up this process, I would like to move the temporary directory to /dev/shm by putting the following line into my.cnf: tmpdir=/dev/shm/mysqltmp I can create /dev/shm/mysqltmp just fine and do chown mysql:mysql /dev/shm/mysqltmp chcon --reference /tmp/ /dev/shm/mysqltmp I've tried to make SELinux happy by applying the same settings that are in effect for /tmp/ (and /var/tmp/), which is presumably where MySQL is writing its tmp files if tmpdir is undefined. The problem is that SELinux complains about MySQL having access to that directory. I get the following in /var/log/messages: SELinux is preventing mysqld (mysqld_t) "getattr" to /dev/shm (tmpfs_t).
