• Monit and Thin and Unfound Gems

  I've been using Monit to monitor my Thin server and everything was working until I upgraded my Rails version from 2.3.4 to 2.3.14. Now when I try and start Thin using monit it gives me an unfound gem error: Missing the Rails 2.3.14 gem. Please `gem install -v=2.3.14 rails` I thought this may be a GEM PATH issue and also tried setting the GEM_HOME and PATH variables in the start command: check process thin3001 with pidfile /home/blahblah/apps/Vocab/shared/pids/thin.3001.pid start program = "/usr/bin/env PATH=/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems GEM_HOME=/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems /usr/bin/ruby /usr/bin/thin -C /etc/thin/vocab.yml start -o 3001" stop program = "/usr/bin/ruby /usr/bin/thin -C /etc/thin/vocab.yml stop -o 3001" if totalmem > 150.0 MB for 5 cycles then restart group thin It's strange because if I run the start command in the console it works fine, it's only within monit that I get the missing Gems error.

• Lightning strike causes fast download?

  Ok, REALLY strange question. My friend says he was downloading a 14 GB file at about 1 mb/s when suddenly there was a lightning strike outside and momentarily the download speed jumped to 10,000,000 GB/s. The file finnished downloading. He even has the screenshot to prove it. I also trust him and don't believe that he would be lying. So my question is: how is this even possible?? Is there just the possibility that the file was about to finish downloading anyway and the lightning strike coincided with a freak download speed calculation error?

• Pylons error "No object (name: request) has been registered for this thread" with debug = false

  I'm unable to access the request object in my Pylons 0.9.7 controller when I set debug = false in the .ini file. I have the following code: def run_something(self): print('!!! request = %r' % request) print('!!! request.params = %r' % request.params) yield 'Stuff' With debugging enabled this works fine and prints out: !!! request = <Request at 0x9571190 POST http://my_url> !!! request.params = UnicodeMultiDict([... lots of stuff ...]) If I set debug = false I get the following: !!! request = <paste.registry.StackedObjectProxy object at 0x4093790> Error - <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: No object (name: request) has been registered for this thread The stack trace confirms that the error is on the print('!!! request.params = %r' % request.params) line. I'm running it using the Paste server and these two lines are the very first lines in my controller method. This only occurs if I have yield statements in the method (even though the statements aren't reached). I'm guessing Pylons sees that it's a generator method and runs it on some other thread. My questions are: How do I make it work with debug = false ? Why does it work with debug = true ? Obviously this is quite a dangerous bug, since I normally develop with debug = true, so it can go unnoticed during development.

• /usr/sbin/tmpwatch -am 1 /tmp/nginx_client not cleaning nginx temporary files

  I installed nginxcp (A nginx plugin for cpanel). They recommend to add the following cron job to clean the temp files. 0 */1 * * * /usr/sbin/tmpwatch -am 1 /tmp/nginx_client But it does't work. Even running the command /usr/sbin/tmpwatch -am 1 /tmp/nginx_client nothing happens. None of the files are being removed. The only strange thing I noticed, is that all tmp files that are being stored at /tmp/nginx_client belongs to nobody nobody. What am I doing wrong? thanks.

  I wrote a .net assembly using c# to perform functions that will be used by both managed and unmanaged code. I have a VB6 project that now needs to use the assembly via COM. I created my .net assembly, made sure that ComVisible is set to true and that it is registered for COM interop via project properties. public class MyClass [ComVisible(true)] public string GetResponse() { return "Testing Response" } } I build the assembly and copied the file into a folder. TestInterop.dll I then run a batch file to register the assembly tool to register the object for COM. cd C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ regasm "c:\Program Files\TestApp\TestInterop.dll" /tlb:TestInterop.tlb I open a new VB6 application and reference TestInterop.dll In VB6 I write the following code and it compiles. Dim obj as TestInterop.MyClass Set obj = new TestInterop.MyClass Dim strTest as string strTest = obj.GetRespose() When I run the program it errors on the obj.GetResponse() line. Run-time error' -2147024894 (80070002'): Automation error The system cannot find the file specified Also, the intellesense does not work on obj. I had to type the GetResponse method. Is this normal? Does anyone have any clue what could be wrong or what steps I missed. Thanks!

• CSharpCodeProvider doesn't return compiler warnings when there are no errors

  I'm using the CSharpCodeProvider class to compile a C# script which I use as a DSL in my application. When there are warnings but no errors, the Errors property of the resulting CompilerResults instance contains no items. • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

• Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

  I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

• How to debug UrlRewriter.NET?

  I have looked at their help page it seems like I can register a debug logger that outputs information to the 'standard ASP.NET debug window'. My problem is I don't know what that means, if it means the debug output window in Visual Studio (where you see build output, debug output and more) I am not seeing any UrlRewriter debug output. The rules are working (mostly) I just want to get more debug output to fix issues. I added the register call to the rewriter section like this: <rewriter> <register logger="Intelligencia.UrlRewriter.Logging.DebugLogger, Intelligencia.UrlRewriter" /> .... </rewriter> I am hosting this website locally in IIS on Vista, to debug it I attach the debugger to the w3wp process. Other selected parts from the web.config" <compilation debug="true"> <assemblies> ... </assemblies> </compilation> <trace enabled="true"/> Where should I see the debug output from UrlRewriter.NET? If it is in the Visual Studio debug output window, any ideas why I am not seeing it there?

Don't ask me please why I did this strange thing! ;-) So, my PHP script replaces all line foldings "\n" with one of the speacial symbol like "|". When I insert text data to database, the PHP script replaces all line foldings with the symbol "|" and when the script reads text data from the database, it replaces all special symbols "|" with line folding "\n". I want to restrict text format in the way that it will cut line foldings if there are more than 2 line foldings used in each separating texts. • Removable vs fixed mount points in Linux

  What makes a mount point removable in Linux? I am using Gentoo Linux with Gnome 3.2, and I find it annoying that some of my drives (ex: /dev/sdb) appear as removable but not the others (ex: /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). They are all in /etc/fstab, with the same options. They are all mounted properly at startup, they all work fine under my own folders /mnt/drive2 /mnt/drive3 /mnt/drive4. But only one of them (the first) appears in Nautilus (and in the Gnome 3 notification tray) as mountable/removable, not the others. Can I add options to my fstab to hide it? Or can I probe using udevadm or whatever? It looks strange to be able to remove/unmount fixed drives that I never need to unmount nor remove. Any pointer would be good, thanks.

• Exposing the ipPhone attribute to Communicator and the OCS address book service

  I am in the process of integrating OCS with our Cisco phone system using CUCIMOC. After some fiddling with the phone normalization rules, it appears that I can get PSTN numbers to be dialed though the CUCIMOC interface (yay!). However, during this process I came to realize that the ipPhone attribute in Active Directory does not appear to be exposed to Communicator (and CUCIMOC). What is strange though, is that I can see from the OCS address book service "Invalid_AD_Phone_Numbers.txt" that the attribute is processed by the address book service. My question is, how do I expose the ipPhone field in Office Communicator? Currently, Communicator maps like this - Work = telephoneNumber Mobile = mobile Home = homePhone Attributes such as otherHomePhone, ipPhone, otherMobile, otherTelephone, otherIpPhone are ignored.

Update: forgot to mention that I need to do a fuzzy search. that is why i am using an AnalyzingQueryParser.   I have seen on many sites the silverlight video player. I noticed that all of them took a URL as the source of the video file. Can a silverlight player play a video file kept locally? I mean a simple HTML file kept in a folder with the xap (say VideoPlayer.xap) and the video (say ABC.avi) file. The html file would contain an object tag.   Hello, First I read this question, but this knowledge did not help to solve my problems. In initial I've created edmx file by Visual Studio. Generated files with names: uqsModel.Designer.cs uqsModel.edmx This files are located on App_Code folder. And my web app work normally. In Web Config generated connectionstring automatically. <add name="uqsEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/App_Code.uqsModel.csdl|res://*/App_Code.uqsModel.ssdl|res://*/App_Code.uqsModel.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string=&quot;Data Source=aemloviji\sqlexpress;Initial Catalog=uqs;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True&quot;" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" /></connectionStrings> Then I had to generate classes by the instrument edmgen tool(full generation mode). Generated new files with names: uqsModel.cs uqsModel.csdl uqsModel.msl uqsModel.ssdl uqsViews.cs it save new classed to the folder where edmx files located before, and remove existing edmx files. And when page redirrects to any web page server side code fails. And problem: Unable to load the specified metadata resource. Some idea, please.

  I have a list view and want to put stuff both above(on the y axis) and below(y axis) it including images, text views, and a row of buttons. Below is a simplified version of what I am creating.   Hi, I am using a traditional C# web service client generated in VS2008 .Net 3.5, inheriting from SoapHttpClientProtocol. This is connecting to a remote web service written in Java. All configuration is done in code during client initialization, and can be seen below: ServicePointManager.Expect100Continue = false; ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 10; var client = new APIService { EnableDecompression = true, Url = _url + "?guid=" + Guid.NewGuid(), Credentials = new NetworkCredential(user, password, null), PreAuthenticate = true, Timeout = 5000 // 5 sec }; It all works fine, but the time taken to execute the simplest method call is almost double the network ping time. Whereas a Java test client takes roughly the same as the network ping time: C# client ~ 550ms Java client ~ 340ms Network ping ~ 300ms After analyzing the TCP traffic for a session discovered the following: Basically, the C# client sent TCP packets in the following sequence. Client Send HTTP Headers in one packet. Client Waits For TCP ACK from server. Client Sends HTTP Body in one packet. Client Waits For TCP ACK from server. The Java client sent TCP packets in the following sequence. Client Sends HTTP Headers in one packet. Client Sends HTTP Body in one packet. Client Revieves ACK for first packet. Client Revieves ACK for second packet. Client Revieves ACK for second packet. Is there anyway to configure the C# web service client to send the header/body in parallel as the Java client appears to? Any help or pointers much appreciated.

  I have some code in an XML file that I load and compile at runtime in an application. This works fine on Windows, but under Mono I get assembly reference errors. The specific errors I get in the compiler results are: cannot find metadata file 'system.dll' at line 0 column 0. cannot find metadata file 'system.xml.dll' at line 0 column 0. Mono obviously doesn't like the way I add referenced assemblies to the code I'm compiling for system.xml and system.xml.dll. The other two assemblies add fine, which is no surprise because they're the code that the compiler is actually executing from and exist in the executable directory. Any clue what I need to do to fix this? Maybe I could just drop those DLLs in the executable directory, but that feels like a dumb idea.

• Wrong item checked when filtering ListView in android

  I have a ListView with multiple choice entries where some are checked from the beginning using setItemChecked(position, true); I combine this with the filtering option setTextFilterEnabled(true) so it's easy to find a specific entry in the list. The problem is that when I filter the list the entries switch position in the list view. Take for example three entries: 'A', 'B' and 'C' where 'C' is checked beforehand (i.e. the entry at position 3 in the list). When I type a 'C' on the keyboard, only the 'C' entry is displayed (as intended). Now 'C' is not checked anymore, since the entry has moved from the checked position 3 to the unchecked position 1 in the list. This behavior leads to some not very welcome effects in the app. Is there a way to "move the selection with the filtering", i.e. bind the checked state to the entry and not to its initial position in the list? Or do I need to find a new approach? Thanks, Linus
