  • win7 64 bit. Fresh install on fresh pc fails with BSOD.

    Hello, I've built a new machine: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 (2x 2gb) Amd Athlon II X4 630 Box AM3 I tried memtest with hiren boot cd (tested only 3gb) and showed no error. Then I tried the built in ram test from the win7 cd (2 passes no errors). I also deleted with a 0 pass the hard drive. The error I get is this: 0x0000007e (0xFFFFFFFFFC0000005,0xFFFFF8000C1AB0F3,0xFFFFF880009A8498,0xFFFFF880009A7CF0) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    How much of a real-world performance gain would you expect from: replacing a 5400rpm IDE HD with a 7200rpm IDE HD? replacing a 5400rpm IDE HD with a SATA-150?   • Cassandra on heterogeneous servers

    I am currently running 4 cassandra nodes with the following hardware in a Apache Cassandra cluster: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 8G RAM 750G hard disk It shows not such a good writing performance and a really bad read performance with sometimes also timeouts. I was wondering if it makes sense to add 2 nodes with a different hardware (8 CPUs and more RAM) to improve this. Or does a cassandra cluster works best with the same hardware in every node?   • MS Publisher 2003 - hangs when saving to desktop

    We have a win 7 home prem pc, amd cpu, 8G ram, plenty of free disk space. Whenever user is working in publisher 20003, and tries to save a publisher 2003 document to the desktop, the save as dialog hangs and takes 2-3 minutes to display the desktop save location. I've tested excel 2003, it has no problems immediately displaying the desktop save as location and saving the file.

    I'm looking for a desktop board that supports either VT-D (Intel) or IOMMU (AMD) technology. This is the IO virtualization technology, not VT-x for CPU virtualization. I've found a list of chipsets that are purported to have this, but every board I look at, the vendor has decided to not support that feature. I would really prefer a desktop board over a server board for this. Does anyone have a specific model that is known to support this technology?

  • How to get the best LINPACK result and conquer the Top500?

    Given a large Linux HPC cluster with hundreds/thousands of nodes. What are your best practices to get the best possible LINPACK benchmark (HPL) result to submit for the Top500 supercomputer list? To give you an idea what kind of answers I would appreciate here are some sub-questions (with links): How to you tune the parameters (N, NB, P, Q, memory-alignment, etc) for the HPL.dat file (without spending too much time trying each possible permutation - esp with large problem sizes N)? Are there any Top500 submission rules to be aware of? What is allowed, what isn't? Which MPI product, which version? Does it make a difference? Any special host order in your MPI machine file? Do you use CPU pinning? How to you configure your interconnect? Which interconnect? Which BLAS package do you use for which CPU model? (Intel MKL, AMD ACML, GotoBLAS2, etc.) How do you prepare for the big run (on all nodes)? Start with small runs on a subset of nodes and then scale up? Is it really necessary to run LINPACK with a big run on all of the nodes (or is extrapolation allowed)? How do you optimize for the latest Intel/AMD CPUs? Hyperthreading? NUMA? Is it worth it to recompile the software stack or do you use precompiled binaries? Which settings? Which compiler optimizations, which compiler? (What about profile-based compilation?) How to get the best result given only a limited amount of time to do the benchmark run? (You can block a huge cluster forever) How do you prepare the individual nodes (stopping system daemons, freeing memory, etc)? How do you deal with hardware faults (ruining a huge run)? Are there any must-read documents or websites about this topic? E.g. I would love to hear about some background stories of some of the current Top500 systems and how they did their LINPACK benchmark. I deliberately don't want to mention concrete hardware details or discuss hardware recommendations because I don't want to limit the answers. However, feel free to mention hints e.g. for specific CPU models.

While playing NFS, my car has various transparent diamonds all over its body, and while playing FIFA I get these weird black lines all over the field.     Here is my Windows 7 Experience Index using the stock graphics driver: And after installing the newest driver Forceware 197.45, it becomes: The only change is that the "Gaming graphics" subscore drops from 6.4 to 5.2. Is the stock graphic driver more optimized for Windows 7? Or is Forceware 197.45 buggy? Should I revert back to the stock driver?   • how to set windows 7 resolution to 16:9 in virtualbox running in ubuntu 12.04 as a host?

    I have installed Virtualbox in Ubuntu 12.04, and I created a virtual guest with Windows 7 64bit. Guest additions were also installed. It works fine, but I can't set the resolution to anything higher than 1600 x 1200, whereas my screen is 1920x1080. Here's my system specifications: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz AMD Radeon 7650 VGA 8 Gb RAM DDR3 Moreover, if I try to enhable 3D acceleration in the settings of my guest, when I expand to full screen it aborts...   • Typing in web forms lagging - output very slow!

    Hi all, Just recently, typing in forms on the internet has become rediculously slow. I'm on an oldish PC with low memory (1gb) and amd athlon XP 2800+ (2.08 ghz) and get an awesome 1.0 rating from windows :) Thing is though - it only just started happening. Was fine last week. Also, It doesn't only happen when heaps of other processes are open/running. I can have only one IE window up, after fresh reboot, and still happens. Any ideas why?

    I'm replicating a small piece of Sugarscape agent simulation model in Python 3. I found the performance of my code is ~3 times slower than that of NetLogo. Is it likely the problem with my code, or can it be the inherent limitation of Python? Obviously, this is just a fragment of the code, but that's where Python spends two-thirds of the run-time.
