• Laptop LCD sometimes stops working on reboot. Please help.

  I have a Gateway P-6831FX Laptop with Vista Ultimate. The Laptop LCD will sometimes not come on after I reboot the computer. I don't even close the lid and it happens. It isn't dim, it doesn't come on at all. No posting of CMOS (BIOS), nothing. Please note... this happens sometimes, not every time. Frustrating! When plugged into an external monitor, which works fine, Vista display properties can't even "sense" the laptop LCD. I try to enable the laptop LCD for dual display, turning on the laptop LCD, and it does nothing. It's like the laptop LCD is not even there. Manually taking a magnet in my hand to the laptop lid sensing switch (the sensor that turns off display/sleep mode when you close lid), sometimes causes the LCD backlight to "turn on" but not display any images. By "turn on" I mean I can see the screen backlight turn on to a 'dark gray' screen instead of pitch black. Subsequent reboot the laptop display is not working again! Here are the facts: Only happens at random and only after a reboot. Waking from Sleep mode isn't a problem. Pressing F4 function key for dual display does nothing when this happens. Closing lid doesn't seem to be related. (unless it is only after reboot.) using external magnet from laptop screen sensor sometimes triggers backlight to turn on but reboot back to square one with no LCD display. an external display always works fine. I have taken apart LCD, checked all wires and ribbons for loose connections or damage. I have replaced the Inverter. It doesn't seem to be heat related as I can put in sleep mode and resume fine when very hot. (external monitor works fine too). Sometimes the screen works fine as if there is not a problem at all. Even after a reboot... This is random. Any ideas out there? If it is a bad part... which one? The LCD seems to be fine. What are the odds of 2 bad inverters? The backlight is fine. The LCD wires/ribbons seem to be fine. I am at a loss. No warranty left and Gateway tech support is clueless. Thanks for any feedback that might help.

• How to handle external and internal DNS on windows 2012

  I'm trying to setup an Active Directory network on Server 2012 R2, and want AD's DNS to only be used internally (Ex: domain-controller.company.com) as well as some records that need both internal and external accessibility (Ex: mail.company.com) that use internal IP's on the internal network and finally some records that only need external access. The only solutions i have been able to think of, or look up are to either use a sub domain that handles all internal records, and use the plain company.com domain for all external records. These both seem to mean i have to manage two DNS servers separately. Is either of these the best ways or am i messing up somewhere?

  I am setting up a virtual test lab and I configured a domain controller VM running Windows 2008 R2 on my Hyper-V 2008 R2 server. I needed to download and install updates on it so I added an External NIC adapter and got that done. However, systems on my actual real physical domain were pulling IPs from this server and that was a big oopsy on my part so I immediately removed the External NIC adapter until I could find out how to go about keeping the Private and the External separate. If someone from the Server Fault community can help with this since I am pretty new to this, I would be very grateful. Thanks everyone.

  I am using Windows 7 and I have enabled my "S.M.A.R.T" check, too. I have bought an external 1 TB USB hard drive. When it is connected with my computer, it delays my machine initial start with about 4-5 minutes. I was very confused at the begging, then disable the "S.M.A.R.T" check and see that the computer runs normally after restart. So, here is what I want to know: Why the check is turn for the external disk? Is there a way to use the "S.M.A.R.T" check only for my main hard drive? Why it takes 4 to 5 minutes more, as my both hard drives - internal/external are 1 TB?

One time, machine rebooted (not manually), when I turn it on, it runs fsck on /dev/sdc2 and fix some errors and some files are missing on /dev/sdc2 I'v check /dev/sdc2 for badblocks, it doesn't have it ( using e2fsck -c /dev/sdc2 ) Here is the output of fsck http://pastebin.com/D5LmLVBY What else I can do to understand what's wrong here? • Home-Router: Access internal server using external ip [migrated]

  If I've got a typical home router -- say a Net Gear -- which has certain ports forwarded to a internal server, is there a way to tweak the router to let me access that internal server using the external IP address from within the same network? Is there a non-enterprise grade router that can handle this type of thing? In case that was strangely worded, let me re-phrase with an example. My external IP is 1.2.3.4. My internal server is 10.4.3.100 Port 1178 is being forwarded from the router to 10.4.3.100. I'd like to be able to be able to hit 10.4.3.100 from an internal ip of 10.4.3.10 by using the external ip of 1.2.3.4. Possible?

  I have an old IDE HDD that I am trying to pull files off of. I am using a USD to IDE/SATA adapter. I plug in the power and adapter plugs into the drive and it fires up. I plug the USB plug into my XP laptop and it installs the drivers. I can see USB Mass Storage Device under Device Manager. My problem is I can't see the drive in either Windows Explorer or under Disk Management under Computer Management. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Do I have to slave the old hdd? Do I have to make BIOS changes?

  In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code.   I'd like to enable the new Domain Keys DKIM email authentication feature for a domain hosted in Google Apps. Some of my users use an external SMTP gateway (such that when they send email, it doesn't go through smtp.gmail.com). I have an SPF record configured for the domain, and this allows the external SMTP gateways as valid SMTP hosts. (I realise SPF is different to DKIM) Will enabling DKIM adversely affect the external gateway email? eg. Are the externally sent emails at risk of being marked as spam because they would not have the DKIM signature, or will DKIM only positively benefit emails sent through Google's SMTP server?

• scp vs netatalk, samba, and/or vsftpd with External USB drive

  I set up a ubuntu server machine to share an ext2 formatted external usb drive. When attempting to copy a single 275MB files from said device through netatalk, I get estimated download rates at around 45 min. With samba and ftp (using vsftpd) I get 1+ hours! Using scp to copy the file results in complete download within 5 minutes. Another option, ssh+cp from external device to ~ and then using netatalk to grab it from there results in a total time of arounf 7 minutes. Does anyone have a clue what is misconfigured? Assuming that nothing is, is there any fs/pseudo-fs that would use the internal hdd as an intermediate location/onion-layer for the external hdd (for reads only)?   I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

• Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

  Apple have been relatively restrictive in the way in which they have enabled the iPad to be connected to an external display i.e. only certain things like videos and images can be displayed in this way (via a converting lead). Does anyone know of a way to get around this? I.e. display any content on the iPad on an external display - not just the apps/content that Apple has designated? For example, I want to connect my iPad to an external monitor and create documents, viewing them on the monitor not the iPad display? Thanks in advance for any help.

• Exchange and external mail server

  Hi, We have our domain hosted externally with Network Solutions, and our mail server is running from there. We have a branch office in Bahrain and have 3 users who would like to use their email addresses on a local exchange server running at the Bahrain office. The Exchange server is currently only used for internal mail,contacts and calendaring. I've used a third=party program to download the POP3 mail to their exchange accounts. so they can receive mail from outside. The issue is in sending mail using their external addresses. I've setup their exchange accounts to include their external address. But we get an error message stating that the IP is not authorized. I tried putting the local ISP as the smart host, but then we get an error message stating that the Address was rejected. I tried using our own external mail server as the smart host, but then the message "Relaying is denied" comes up. Any suggestions? Thanks Arun

• Seagate 1TB 'EXPANSION' external hard drive, showing as BAD

  Hello! I have bough an external Seagate 1TB drive, which my XP system can see and will write files to, however when I use Partition Magic it describes the whole partition as BAD, and it is shown in yellow. All the options are greyed out. When I use Drive Image XML to try and copy drive to drive (I want a comlplete copy of my C drive including OS), I get an error message saying it can't lock the drive. The external drive is brand new and uses NTFS. Any ideas? Seagate 'support' haven't bothered getting back to me. Incidentally, I have another external drive (320GB), which uses FAT32 and Partition Magic sees that fine. I am doing a full format of the Seagate at the moment, to see if this helps. • Cannot Access Server from External IP (Router)

  We have an Ubuntu 10.04 LAMP server running on site (Apache is on port 80). It is running fine through the LAN, but I cannot access it using its external IP address through the Netopia 3000 Series modem by which it is connected to the internet. I have tried using what Netopia calls "Pinholes" (Port Forwarding) to make the server accessible, but a telnet to the external address just gives me "connect to address x.x.x.x: Operation timed out." I have also tried enabling "Services" and "IP Passthrough" on the router, but it gives the same result as above. How can I enable the server to be accessed through its external IP address? Because it connects fine locally, it would seem to be a problem with the Netopia router. Update: Booting the server in GUI mode instead of text mode solved the problem instantly. Any ideas why?

Unfortunately virtual box doesn't enumerate the external harddrive in the options menu of the virtual machine, even though it shows all other devices connected to the host. Windows can find the harddrive, but obviously just gives me the option to reformat it, because it doesn't support ext4. (ext2fsd or Ext2Read are no options, as I need newer ext4 features) How can I add a filter for my external harddrive so it is recognized by my virtual machine?

• Populating a drive that was formated to ntsf on seperate computer

  I recently downloaded some files that were over 4gb and wouldnt do a straight transfer to a external hd. this is all being done on a serperate computer we shall call computer1. my computer(computer2) is where im trying to get the files too. i used cmd to "Soft format" the drive to NTSF on computer1 so i could then take the drive to transfer the files to computer2. this was suppose to allow the format change without losing the files i had on there already... after the proccess was done i checked the drive on computer1 and all the old files were there and working....when i took the drive back to computer2 to transfer the files i had just downloaded from computer2 my computer...computer1:wont reconize or populate the external drive so it can give it a drive letter and function. the external drive works fine on computer1, but how do i get it to work again on computer2? when i try to populate it, i cant access the properties function in order to make permissions for everyone so it is reconized....any help would be greatfull..... also i am running windows 7 ultimate edition if that helps.

  I am the proud new owner of a MacBook Pro with a mini-DisplayPort. My desk setup used to allow me to position the screen of my old MacBook beside an external monitor, essentially allowing dual-head. It was also advantageous that my old MBP and my external monitor had the same resolution, 1440x900. Now, I'm searching for a set of two monitors that I can use a HengeDock with. Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro suffers from having only one mini-DisplayPort. Looking up the spec for DisplayPort 1.2 (which the MBP supports), DisplayPort daisy chaining is supported. What I'm looking for is a monitor that has two DisplayPorts so I can daisy chain two monitors off the single mini-DisplayPort. What I don't want is a USB-based video solution. I need full acceleration on both monitors; an external video card won't cut it. I hope I don't have to wait a few years for these monitors to come out. TL;DR: I need two monitors with two DisplayPorts each that I can daisy-chain. Thanks!
