  • Best way to handle SQL Server fulltext index updates

    Hi all, I have a fulltext index which doesn't need to be immediately up-to-date, I'd like to spare myself the I/O (when I do bulk updates, I see a ton of I/O related to the index) and do the index updates during low usage times (nightly, perhaps even weekly). It seems there are two ways to go about this: Turn off change tracking (SET CHANGE_TRACKING OFF) and add a timestamp field to the indexed table, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start INCREMENTAL population, or Enable change tracking, but set it to MANUAL, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start UPDATE population when you need it updated. Is there a preferred method? I couldn't tell from this overview if there was a performance benefit one way or the other. Tom

  • django-haystack ordering - How do I handle this?

    Hi there, I'm using django-haystack for a search page on my site. I'm basically done, but not quite happy with the ordering and not quite sure how haystack decides how to order everything. I know I can over-ride the SearchQuerySet by using order_by but that over-rides it entirely. Let's say I want to force the search to order by in stock (BooleanField), so that the products that are in stock show up on top, but then do everything else as it normally would. How do I do that? I tried doing order_by('-in_stock', 'content') figure content was what it used by default but it produces very different results from if I just leave it to do its own ordering. Thanks for any input on this matter!

  • How Does MVC Handle Missing Data Requirements

    I'm teaching myself MVC concepts in hopes of applying them to a non-OO/procedural development environment. I am pretty sure I understand simple View - Request - Controller - Request - Model - Response - Controller - Response - View flow. What I am struggling with is understanding more complex scenarios. For instance, let's say I have a shopping cart form with a button for 'Calculate Shipping'. Normally a click on this button will follow the above flow. But what if there is missing data, like the zip code? Should the View verify this first and alert the user before making a 'Calculate Shipping' request? Or should the request be made and the Model returns a notification that critical data is missing? If the latter, does the Controller instruct the View to alert the user? What if I wanted to prompt the user for the missing zip code (perhaps in a popup input display) and then automatically request the 'Calculate Shipping' method again? I suppose this gets into the question of how smart a View ought to be. It seems that MVC has evolved due to richer UI and automation (such as with data-binding) and this muddies the water from a purist MVC perspective. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

  • Http Digest Authentication, Handle different browser char-sets...

    Hi all, I tried to use the Http Authentication Digest Scheme with my php (apache module) based website. In general it works fine, but when it comes to verification of the username / hash against my user database i run into a problem. Of course i do not want to store the user´s password in my database, so i tend to store the A1 hashvalue (which is md5($username . ':' . $realm . ':' . $password)) in my db. This is just how the browser does it too to create the hashes to send back. The Problem: I am not able to detect if the browser does this in ISO-8859-1 fallback (like firefox, IE) or UTF-8 (Opera) or whatever. I have chosen to do the calculation in UTF-8 and store this md5 hash. Which leads to non-authentication in Firefox and IE browsers. How do you solve this problem? Just do not use this auth-scheme? Or Store a md5 Hash for each charset? Force users to Opera? (Terms of A1 refer to the http://php.net/manual/en/features.http-auth.php example.) (for digest access authentication read the according wikipedia entry)

The issue is that some of the tags rely on each other so, I'm wondering how to get around that ordering from the looping.     Hi all, I implemented the delegate-callback pattern between two classes without retaining the delegate. But in some cases, the delegate is dealloced. (My case is that I have a ViewController is the delegate object, and when the user press back button to pop that ViewController out of the NavigationController stack) Then the callback method get BAD_EXE: if (self.delegate != nil && [self.delegate respondsToSelector:selector]) { [self.delegate performSelector:selector withObject:self withObject:returnObject]; } I know the delegate-callback pattern is implemented in a lot of application. What is your solution for this?

  • How to handle similar items in rails MVC?

    I'm working on building a pretty simple site mainly as an exercise in learning more about rails. You can see my rough progress at statific.com. It's working pretty much as I wanted it for keeping track of server information, but now I'd like to expand it to other things, next on the list being firewalls. I can pretty easily duplicate all the models, views, etc.. that I have for my servers. The problem I see with that is that it isn't very DRY since most of the code would look the same, the only difference would be the attributes I have setup for firewalls would be different than for servers. I know in plain ruby this is pretty simple, you can have a 'Product' w/ common attributes ('manufacturer', 'model') and then have children with more specific attributes. Does the same type of concept exist for rails, or am I just over thinking this?

    Hey all, I'm making a templating system where I instantiate each tag using a foreach loop. EDIT: Ok just to clarify.. My main problem is that Class A relies on Class B, but class A is instantiated before class B, so therefore width has not yet been defined in class B. I am looking for a good way to make sure all the classes are loaded for everyone allowing the interdependencies to exist. For the future, please don't consider any syntax errors.. I just made up this example on the spot. Also assume that I have access to class B from class A after class B gets instantiated. I know this has applications elsewhere and I'm sure this has been solved before, if someone could enlighten me or point me in the right direction that'd be great! Thanks! Matt Mueler

Value '123' is already present." I know I entered a duplicated value but the question is HOW can I determine which the columnName that cause the error and re-write the error message entirely in different language I want to get the columnName and the wrong value thanks in advance

    I have to write a C# application that runs on WindowsME. Yes, I mean that Microsoft operating system that has been forgotten a long long time ago. My program needs no user interaction and as WindowsME doesn't support services, it will be a console application. Furthermore it will be used on more modern operating systems, where the user can choose whether to start it as console application or install it as a windows service. Now suppose the software is running on WinME and the user decides to logoff or shutdown the machine without a prior quit of my software. WinME complains about my program still running and asks if it should kill the process. Apart from the bad user experiance, this means that the application is not shut down properly. So I look for a way to be informed if the user logs off or wants to shutdown the machine to be able to perform a proper shutdown of my software first.

    I've got a view in my app that does pretty much everything, and I like it that way. The problem however is that it's implementing 5 or 6 different delegates, which seems a little bit messy. My question is, does the view controller have to implement all of the delegates? or is there some way I can separate the code out into different files (without having to do a major restructure or rewrite)? The problem comes when parsing or sending JSON responses in Django server. Whats the best way to do this? We tried using SimpleJSON and it turned out not to be so simple as we didn't find any good tutorials or sample code for the same? Are there any python functions similiar to get,put and opt in java for JSON? Any help would be much appreciated..

    I am writing a client for a server that typically sends data as strings in 500 or less bytes. However, the data will occasionally exceed that, and a single set of data could contain 200,000 bytes, for all the client knows (on initialization or significant events). However, I would like to not have to have each client running with a 50 MB socket buffer (if it's even possible). Each set of data is delimited by a null \0 character. What kind of structure should I look at for storing partially sent data sets? For example, the server may send ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUV\0WXYZ\0123!\0. I would want to process ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUV, WXYZ, and 123! independently. Also, the server could send ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ1234567890LOL123HAHATHISISREALLYLONG without the terminating character. I would want that data set stored somewhere for later appending and processing. Also, I'm using asynchronous socket methods (BeginSend, EndSend, BeginReceive, EndReceive) if that matters.

But are there any pitfalls when copying or handling expressions like q? Can I rely on the fact, that they are always evaluated "lazy"? Is there any danger to produce an infinite loop?

    I've two classes (A and B) that extend a base class BASE. I need to make a report that takes an array of such classes and the prints the fields of A or B. I tought of using conditional expressions, then casting to one or another (depending on a field value). But I can't cast, because I don't know how to refere to the current bean. To do this I am using a JRBeanCollectionDataSource filled with a List<BASE>. How do I cast every bean to A or B in a report (or subreport)? I tried: ((A)this) but it says basically that this contains the report instance, not the current bean and gives error.

  • How do you handle large repeated UI elements with JQuery

    Howdy, Here's the situation: You have a very complex UI element that is repeated in a list. Each has a menu on it, buttons, it hides and shows subelements, buttons for switch it's state, etc, etc. The elements are populated via JSON so you have to construct the elements and the functionality of the fly. What's the best way to accomplish this with JQuery? Where would you save the reusable template for the DOM structure? How would you add the behavior on? $().live? .livequery? onclick? manual after every JSON get? I guess I just see a lot of people doing different things. What's your experience with performance?     We are using ankhsvn to check in our .net code, however I have two issues with our setup that I want to resolve. 1\ I thought a key reason to have a tool like svn is that you can rollback to an earlier version of your codebase. If developers are just checking in code, then how can you get version 1.1 (say the current production build), out of subversion? 2\ In VS you have the concept of solutions, many solutions might use the same project. How do I make sure when a developer checks out a solution, they get the appropriate versions of the projects that belong to that solution?

    I've got a dictionary in python which is assigned as a template variable. One of the keys is named "#text" but when i try to access it using {{ artist.image.3."#text"}} I get an error which is File "/home/jack/Desktop/test/appengine/lib/django/django/template/__init__.py", line 558, in __init__ raise TemplateSyntaxError, "Could not parse the remainder: %s" % token[upto:] TemplateSyntaxError: Could not parse the remainder: "#text" So how can I use this in the template? I've tried putting quotes around it but to no avail. I'd like to not modify the dictionary if possible, but if its easy enough to do then I guess its okay. Thanks
