How to use data mining principles in this project?

I'm getting a Data Mining class this semester and we are free for the final project.
For a few months I'm working on procedural planets rendering (something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL8zDgTlXso). Do you have any idea of which data mining principles I could use to keep working this project ? Maybe I could try to generate interesting terrains from a set of real maps ? Any publications on that subject ?
Any other ideas ?
