• Justification for learning/implementing newer Microsoft technologies

  I work at a large healthcare organization as a mid-level software developer. I have over 10 years experience in the IT industry using Microsoft technologies (ASP.NET & SQL Server). When I go to conferences, code camps, .net user group meetings, I hear of all kinds of new tools and technologies: MVC, LINQ, Entity Framework, WCF Web Services, etc. I guess you could say I'm in my comfort zone using the same old stuff from asp.net 2.0. I use typed datasets for my data access layer. I use web forms and feature rich server controls with master pages. I know how to use plain old SQL and create queries in my typed datasets to get at data my applications need. Throughout my career, I'm always sensitive to not become obsolete with my skill set. What I currently use works fine and my development time is fast. But I'm concerned that if I were to be laid off, I would be asked in interviews how many MVC apps I've written. Or how I am with LINQ or WCF web services. I know that it doesn't matter how many conferences, books, or videos I watch on some new technology...I have to implement/use it or it simply won't sink in. Also, managers who interview don't care how much someone reads up on something, only real use and experience with a technology. I have a new project to write. I've gone to my manager and have asked for additional time for the project for learning/implementing technology I may not be familiar with. Our organization encourages its employees to "learn and grow" and to continue are education. But I always get resistance when I ask for more time to ramp up on something new to implement. My manager is asking for concrete business reasons for implementing these new technologies. I don't have business reasons. My reasons are because I don't want to become obsolete. I could say it would make the project more maintainable in the future by other developers since at some point people could stop using these older technologies, but that' about all I can think of. Does Linq/Entity Framework/MCV apps perform better? So much so that the customers (users in departments I'm creating this app for) need? I doubt it. I'm interested in you guy's thoughts on this. Do many of you have similar plights with trying to use newer upcoming technologies? I doubt I'm on the bleeding edge of technology, either. Are there "business reasons" that you would bring to light for using these technologies? Thanks in advance! Sorry for the long wall of text.

  I purchased a copy of Microsoft Office Student Edition last year. My computer's hard drive crashed which meant that I had to reinstall the software and use the serial code again. It is now telling me though that the number of uses has been exceeded. Is there a way to tell Microsoft that I'm trying to validate on the same machine that I was already operating on? I really don't want to have to purchase it again to run on the same machine that it was already running on.

• VBA + Polymorphism: Override worksheet functions from 3rd party

  my company makes extensive use of a data provider using a (closed source) VBA plugin. In principal, every query follows follows a certain structure: Fill one cell with a formula, where arguments to the formula specify the query the range of that formula is extended (not an arrray formula!) and cells below/right are filled with data For this to work, however, a user has to have a terminal program installed on the machine, as well as a com-plugin referenced in VBA/Excel. My Problem These Excelsheets are used and extended by multiple users, and not all of them have access to the data provider. While they can open the sheet, it will recalculate and the data will be gone. However, frequent recalculation is required. I would like every user to be able to use the sheets, without executing a very specific set of formulas. Attempts remove the reference on those computers where I do not have terminal access. This generates a NAME error i the cell containing the query (acceptable), but this query overrides parts of the data (not acceptable) If you allow the program to refresh, all data will be gone after a failed query Replace all formulas with the plain-text result in the respective cells (press a button and loop over every cell...). Obviously destroys any refresh-capabilities the querys offer for all subsequent users, so pretty bad, too. A theoretical idea, and I'm not sure how to implement it: Replace the functions offered by the plugin with something that will be called either first (and relay the query through to the original function, if thats available) or instead of the original function (by only deploying the solution on non-terminal machines), which just returns the original value. More specifically, if my query function is used like this: =GETALLDATA(Startdate, Enddate, Stockticker, etc) I would like to transparently swap the function behind the call. Do you see any hope, or am I lost? I appreciate your help. PS: Of course I'm talking about Bloomberg... Some additional points to clarify issues raise by Frank: The formula in the sheets may not be changed. This is mission-critical software, and its way too complex for any sane person to try and touch it. Only excel and VBA may be used (which is the reason for the previous point...) It would be sufficient to prevent execution of these few specific formulas/functions on a specific machine for all excel sheets to come This looks more and more like a problem for stackoverflow ;-)

  I want to plot the stock prices of certain companies VS the S&P500. I have all the price data downloaded in my excel sheet already. I want to create a line graph in Excel. One line is fixed and that would be the S&P500, and the other would be the company I select. I know how to use data validation to create a dropdown list, but how could I make it in such a way that when I select company A, I would only see company A's price data but not company B, C, etc. Then when I select company B, I would only see company B's price data & the S&P price data. And so on. The S&P line will be visible all the time, but the various company's price line will only appear if it is selected. Is there any easy way to normalize all sets of data in a way such that the starting point is always 100?

SELECT CODE, count (Distinct *) FROM TABLE GROUP BY CODE CODE | Distinct Count of Value =================================== A01 | 3 B01 | 1 or, better yet, Can we have an excel formula pasted in Column C to get something like this: CODE (COL A) | VALUE (COL B) | DISTINCT VALUE COUNT WITH MATCHING CODE (COL C) =============================================================================== A01 | 10 | 3 A01 | 20 | 3 A01 | 30 | 3 A01 | 10 | 3 B01 | 30 | 1 B01 | 30 | 1 I know I can use pivot table to get this result easily. However due to reporting requirements I have to append the "distinct count" column to the excel sheet, hence pivot table is not an option.   I am looking for a way to capture a click on a standard toolbar tool in Excel with VBA. The primary need is to capture any Copy, Cut, and Paste request by the user. I can capture the hot keys for these functions, but I can't find a way to capture the same functions when the user clicks on the icon on the standard toolbar or when the user uses the menu to select the function.

  I keep getting an error the reads: "Excel found unreadable content in "Book.xlsm". Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook?.................". When I click "Yes" it removes the vba macro from my workbook.   I have this spreadsheet that started as a silly aid for a game (Mafia Wars 2), but grew into a tricky spreadsheet question. In the game your character have 9 "slots" for weapons and armors, 1 for each "type": Light Weapon, Heavy Weapon, Body Armor, Head Armor, etc. So I made a list of all weapons and armors available in the game, 1 item per row. Example: SHOP ITEM TYPE ITEM NAME ATK DEF PRICE EQUIPPED? Basically I need a LOOKUP (or VLOOKUP, or anything else) that uses 2 criteria to find a given row, the item type and the X marker. Question is: HOW? I am using OpenOffice Calc 3.2.1, but since it shares so many functions with MS Excel, answers for Excel are also fine (as long as it only uses regular formulas, no VBScript or Macros or VBA etc) Last but not least, suggestions / solutions for rearranging the data so it makes this problem easier to solve are also welcome. • How to antialias trendline in Excel?

  I have created a couple of line charts in Excel 2011 for Mac. The actual data line looks good and is antialiased in a nice way but when I then add a trendline it is jagged and ugly: I have tried "all" options available under Format Trendline, to no avail. There is an option "Soft Edges" but it doesn't seem to work as expected: when I increase the value there the trend line gets more and more narrow until it disappears.
