• What are the advantages to use vector-based fonts over bitmap fonts in (2d) games?

  I know that many games are using bitmap fonts. Which are the advantages for vector-based font rendering / manipulation when compared to bitmap fonts and in which scenarios would they matter the most? Prefer a focus on 2d games when answering this question. If relevant, please include examples for games using either approach. Some factors you might consider: amount of text used in the game scaling of text overlaying glyphs and anti-aliasing general rendering quality font colors and styling user interface requirements localisation / unicode text wrapping and formatting cross-platform deployment 2d vs 3d Background: I am developing a simple falling blocks game in 2d, targeted for pc. I would like to add text labels for level, score, and menu buttons. I am using SFML which uses FreeType internally, so vector-based features are easily available for my project. In my view, font sizes in simple games often don't vary, and bitmap fonts should be easier for cross-platform concerns (font-formats and font rendering quality). But I am unsure if I am missing some important points here, especially since I want to polish the looks of the final game.

• What language/framework (technology) to use for website (flash games portal)

  Hello, I know there are a lot of similar questions on the net, but because I am a newbie in web development I didn't find the solution for my specific problem. I am planing on creating a flash games portal from scratch. It is a big chance that there will be big traffic from the beginning (millions of pageviews). I want to reduce the server costs as much as possible but in the same time to not be tide to an expensive contract as there is a chance that the project will not be as successfully as I want and in that case the money would be very little. The question is : what technology to use? I don't know any web dev technology yet so it doesn't matter what I will learn. My web dev experience is a little php 8 years ago, and from then I programmed in C++ / Java- game and mobile development. I like Java and C syntax and language very much and I tend to dislike dynamic typing or non robust scripting (like php)- but I can get along if these are the best choices. The candidates are now: - Grails (my best for now) Ruby on Rails Cake PHP Other technologies (Google App Engine, Python/Django etc...) I was considering at first using pure C and compiling the web app in the server- just to squeeze more from the servers, but soon I understand that this is overkill. Next my eyes came on Ruby - as there is a lot of buzz for it's easiness of use. Next I discovered Grails and looked at Java because it is said that it is "faster". But I don't know what this "Faster" really means on my needs, so here comes the first question: 1) What will be my biggest consumption on the server, other than bandwidth, for a lot of flash content requests? Is it memory? I heard that Java needs a lot of memory, but is faster. Is it CPU? I am planning to take some daily VPS.NET nodes at first, to see if there is a demand, and if the "spike" is permanent to move to a dedicated server (serverloft.com has some good offers), else to remain with less nodes. I was also considering developing in Google App Engine- cheap or free hosting to use at first - so I can test my assumption- and also very easy to use (no need for sys administration) but the costs became high if used more ( 3 million games played / month .. x mb/ each). And the issue with Google is that it looks me in this technology. My other concern is scalability (not only for traffic/users, but as adding functionality) My plans are to release a functional site in just 4 weeks (just the basics frontend and some quick basic backend - so I can be able to modify some things and add games manually) - but then to raise it and add more things to it. I am planning to take a little different approach than other portals so I need to write it from scratch (a script will not do). 2) Will Grails take much more resources than RoR or Php server wise? I heard that making it on Java stack will be hardware expensive and is overkill if you don't make a bank application. My application will not be very complex (I hope and i will try to) but will have a lot of traffic. I also took in account using CDN for files, but the cheapest CDN found was 5c/GB (vps.net) and the cost per gb on serverloft (http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=4) is only 1.79 cents/GB and comes with the other resources either. I am new to this domain (web). I am learning the ropes and searching on the web for ~half of year but don't have any really practical experience, so I know that I must have some naive thinking and other issues that i don't know from now, so please give me any advice you want regarding anything, not just the specific questions asked. • Piecing together low-powered hardware for an RS-232 terminal server

  I'm working on reconstructing my Cisco lab for training/educational purposes and I found that the actual terminal server I have is dead. I have a couple of 8-port PCI serial cards which would be more than ample for my lab, but I don't want to leave my personal computer running to be able to access the console ports. Ideally I would access the terminal server remotely, either by SSH/RDP to the box (depending on what OS I go with) or by installing a software package that allows me to telnet directly to a serial port. I know I've found a program that does this under Linux in the past but its name escapes me at the moment. I'm thinking about scavenging for some old hardware, on eBay or something, to put together a low-powered PC. Needs to be something that: Has Low-power consumption Has at least 2 PCI slots (though I certainly wouldn't complain about having more) Has onboard Ethernet (or, if not, another PCI or ISA slot (not shared)) Can be headless once an OS installed (probably Linux) I'm currently leaning towards an old fashioned Pentium (sub-133MHz era) but I am wondering if anybody else knows of another platform/mobo that would suit these needs. Alternatively, I've been considering buying a Raspberry Pi and a big USB hub along with a bunch of USB-Serial adapters but this sounds like it'd get messy quick with cables and adapters all over the place, and I may not even have the same ttyS#'s between boots.

• Computer freezes after watching Youtube videos

  I had Windows 7 installed all september. But I installed Windows XP Professional back because my computer couldn't handle the new OS. After first boot I tried to install newest flash player (from Adobe website), but it failed. I had my old setup on USB drive and it worked. I don't know is it important or not. I am watching Youtube videos in my free time (almost every hour). After few days the computer started to freeze when I open a page with the video or close the page with video, not while I watch a video. No BSODs. Nothing in Event viewer. I use Firefox only. When computer freezes the sound wont. If iTunes is playing a radio station or is it another video playing in background, the sound wont freeze. Last few days the mouse wont freeze. Its a strange symptom. If I click few times then the cursor will actually freeze. I just want to know where does this problem come from (hardware - graphics card, old motherboard or it's just some glitch in setups). If it's not graphics card then I will be happy. The graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4650 - brand new. Catalyst 11.8 installed. Things I have tried: Installed newest flash player after a week (the setup didn't fail this time) Installed latest video drivers Deleting cookies Defragmenting hard drive Using TuneUp utilities for computer cleenup Installed latest Mozilla Firefox Cleaned the PC Changed CPU Fan speed almost to max (just to be sure) Things I haven't tried yet: Didn't try playing videos on other browsers What can I do now?

• Getting a job in the games industry as a developer, just knowing a game engine

  I recently enrolled in a community college for games developement. But I am skeptical about the curriculum. I have no experience in the gaming industry so I wouldn't be able to tell whether it's a good investment or not. So I am asking you. I don't want to get too much into the details of all the classes I am taking so I will try to be brief. By the time I graduate, I should have a understanding of how a game engine works. I will be working with the Unreal Engine to develop a Multiplayer game from scratch. So in the process of my final project, I will learn how to work within the Unreal Engine, learn Python and learn how to use its API to connect to a remote server and build game mechanics. Overall I will also recieve an associates degree in game development. I learn C++ but not C. The director said he was trying to implement C in the program as well. What I notice is I will not learn how to build a 3D game engine from scratch. They do not teach any artificial intelligence (AI). I will not learn how to work with the graphics card using a graphics API such as DirectX or OpenGL. I know building a game engine from scratch is a little complex, but at the same time the track is requiring me to take some advanced mathematics courses such as calculus and geometry 1 and 2. I also got to take a physics class. I just think that's a little much for just learning how to use the Unreal Engine but not actually build one or try to learn the anatomy of a games engine. Is this good enough to possibly land my a job in the industry? If I left anything out or was not detail, please feel free to ask more questions. Edit: I do learn data structures and algorithms.

• xcode build to iphone chooses old invalid provisioning profile

  I've just gone through some pain with iphone and xcode upgrades and keychain failures etc and decided to uninstall xcode completely and re-install. This fixed my keychain issues however the project I am working on appears to be linked to an old invalid provisioning profile. I've deleted the profile from "Provisioning Profiles" in organiser, and removed it from Provisioning on the Iphone section of Organiser. However when I build an go with the iphone sdk rather than simulator i get the pop up "codesign wants to sign using key "OldKey" in your keychain". It appears the actual app is associated with the old key and I can't seem to find how to point it to the new valid one. Crazy thing is at some point I managed to get it to work and install but the application crashed and won't open. I've not managed to get it to install again. Any ideas?

• ActiveX controls with old Delphi versions

  I'm testing a non visual ActiveX control based on a registered .ocx which I import into Delphi using the provided wizard. Then, I simply put the generated component on the main form of a new VCL application. Under old Delphi versions (D5 and D2007), when i launch the application, this raise an AV during the component initialization. with Delphi 2009 : no problem, the application starts smoothly. My questions are : Are there known enhancements of ActiveX management in recent Delphi versions which can explain this difference ? Can I suspect a bug in the ActiveX control, or can I consider the origin of the problem is from old Delphi versions ? I need to use this component (if tests OK) in D2007. Do you think that it is possible to correct the AV problem under D2007 by modifying the D2007 generated .tlb file (for example by trying to use the D2009 generated one) PS: the ActiveX control is not named, because my question is a general question about Delphi and ActiveX, not about a specific ActiveX control.

• Presenting MVC to Old C++ Spaghetti Coders?

  I wish to present the idea of MVC to a bunch of old C++ spaghetti coders (at my local computer club). One of them that has alot of influence on the rest of the group seems to finally be getting the idea of encapsulation (largely due in part to this website). I was hoping that I could also point him in the right direction by showing him Model View Controller, but I need to do it in a way that makes sense to him, as well as it probably needs to be written in C/C++! I realize that MVC is a very old architectural pattern so it would seem to me that there should be something out there that would do the job. I'm more of a web developer, so I was wondering if anybody out there who is a good C/C++ coder could tell me what it is that made the MVC light switch turn on in your head.

• Address Book is returning old values

  Hi there, I am having a problem with the AddressBook framework. It all seems to be stemming from ABCopyRecordForUniqueId returning a record with old data. Example: I run up the program below in one terminal window - it shows the current data. I make a change through the address book UI - my program continues to show old data. I run up another instance of the same program in a new terminal window - it shows the updated data. • Get old text from change event?

  Can I somehow find out what was the change in the textfield? I would want to compare the old text with the new text ... the problem is, that I have multiple textAreas in a tab-editor, and all the textAreas are watched by one eventListener. I want to get a value calculated by the next formula: globalChangeCount += thisTextArea.currentCharacterCount - thisTextArea.oldtCharacterCount where the globalChangeCount is a value modified by all changes in any of the textAreas. I am searching for these values through the event variable, but can't seam to find the old text of the textArea.

• PHP 5.3, using old authentication?

  Hi. We're setting up a new webserver with PHP5.3 and are getting the "Error: could not connect: mysqlnd cannot connect to MySQL 4.1+ using old authentication ?" error message. After some google'ing I've found that we should set old passwords = 0 in my.cnf and reset the password(s). But we still have webservers running php 4.x & 5.2 that access the same mysql server (different users & databases), how will these be affected by this ? Will the mysql server be compatible with all the different PHP versions ? Thanks.

  I am trying to solve complex thing (as it looks to me). I have next entities: PLAYER (few of them, with names like "John", "Peter", etc.). Each has unique ID. For simplicity let's think it's their name. GAME (few of them, say named "Hide and Seek", "Jump and Run", etc.). Same - each has unique ID. For simplicity of the case let it be it's name for now. SCORE (it's numeric). So, how it works. Each PLAYER can play in multiple GAMES. He gets some SCORE in every GAME. I need to build rating table -- and not one! Table #1: most played GAMES Table #2: best PLAYERS in all games (say the total SCORE in every GAME). Table #3: best PLAYERS per GAME (by SCORE in particularly that GAME). I could be build something straight right away, but that will not work. I will have more than 10,000 players; and 15 games, which will grow for sure. Score can be as low as 0, and as high as 1,000,000 (not sure if higher is possible at this moment) for player in the game. So I really need some relative data. Any suggestions? I am planning to do it with SQL, but may be just using it for key-value storage; anything -- any ideas are welcome. Thank you!

• Cannot delete old NFS directory: Device or resource busy

  On server1, we had an NFS share mounted from server 2 like this: /nfs/server2/share Recently, we took down server2 to install a new OS on it. Now we can't get NFS setup the way it was. When I do this: ls -l /nfs I get this: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2010-03-15 09:59 server2 Notice how the directory size is 0 instead of 4096 like usual? Anyways I go into server2 expecting to see a share directory, but I don't. It's empty. So therefore I cannot mount my share at /nfs/server2/share. When I try to create /nfs/server2/share directory, I get mkdir: cannot create directory `share': No such file or directory I think this is because it doesn't really think the /nfs/server2 directory really exists. Even if I use the -p option with mkdir, it doesn't work. Next I tried to remove /nfs/server2 so I could just recreate it. I try to rm -r /nfs/server2 but I get rm: cannot remove directory `/nfs/server2': Device or resource busy So now I'm at a loss. I need to mount this NFS share in the same exact place on server1 (at /nfs/server2/share) because other software on server1 depend on this. But if I can't create that share directory and I can't remove that directory, what do I do? Also, just for testing, I attempted to mount the share at /nfs/testing/share and it mounted just fine. But like I said, I need to mount it back in the same location.

• os x 10.4 Old, deleted user mail account problems

  Hello- A while back I tried to add a user 'david' as a mail user on my OS X 10.4 server using dscl (I only had terminal access at the time, no ability to use workgroup manager). I could never get this account to work properly, so I deleted it. dscl . -list /Users no longer shows 'david' as an entry. I have since gained access via Workgroup Manager, and I am trying to re-create the 'david' account. Workgroup manager creates the account fine, along with an email account, which I can then log into via IMAP ('login david password' returns 'OK user logged in'). However, this mail account does not have an inbox, and I can not create one thru a mail client, IMAP or cyradm (they all say 'system I/O error'). When I re-delete this user, I can't find any record of him in any of the mail spool locations. Creating a user with any other name works fine (Inbox, mail access, everything). Any ideas on how I can get this user up and running again? -Chris P.S. - to create this user in the first place, I used dscl . create, then dscl . append /Users/david "some XML I found on the 'net" to add email privileges, if this helps...

I have a label called Games and four labels called PC Games, XBOX 360 Games, PS3 Games and Wii Games. What I want is not only each of the labels to be put in the pages gadget/widget is ( I found some information on that matter here) but also a way to make the four specialized labels that I mentioned in my example to be put in a droplist under the label/tab games (i want the droplist to appear when the mouse hovers above the tab games and also that tab to be clickable and show all the posts I have labeled Games

• uTorrent repeatedly downloads old files from the RSS feed

  So I set up uTorrent to automatically download torrents from EZTV search-based RSS feeds. And it works splendidly. I just set feeds to download automatically, and didn't set up smart episode filters or anything else in the uTorrent itself. However, from time to time something happens to EZTV feeds which makes uTorrent re-download every single torrent in every feed. I'm looking for a workaround.

  Hi there, I have a domain with 3 AD servers for now i'll just call them: AD01 (Win 2008 GC, Operations master) AD02 (Win 2008 GC) AD03 (Win 2003 GC) A couple of months there was some hardware issues with AD01 so the operations master, PDC and Infrastructure Master was moved to AD02. All machines where on while this was happening. AD01 (Win 2008 GC) AD02 (Win 2008 GC, Operations master) AD03 (Win 2003 GC) AD01 was then shutdown for a month. Upon starting this machine up with replaced hardware (NIC and RAID card) i now have a weird problem. AD01 Thinks it is operations master still in AD on the local box AD02 & AD03 Thinks AD02 is operations master in AD on both boxes When running DCDIAG on AD01 i get a number of issues (listed below) When running "dcdiag /test:advertising" on AD01: Doing primary tests Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\AD01 Starting test: Advertising Warning: DsGetDcName returned information for \\ad02.domain.local, when we were trying to reach AD01. SERVER IS NOT RESPONDING or IS NOT CONSIDERED SUITABLE. ......................... • problem booting crusty old windows XP

  I have an acer aspire laptop running Windows XP home. I believe I have some virus on it, I'm not sure--I mostly just run linux in a VM on it so I wasn't too worried. I'm not sure if that virus caused this problem. The laptop wasn't recognizing my USB hard drive for some reason so I decided to restart it. When it started up, it got past the memory test, past the boot screen, (but it paused right here on a blank screen for awhile) and flashed the desktop once (like it does just before the login screen) and then crashed. I got a quick BSOD and then it restarted. Then it tried to boot again, etc etc infinite loop of failure. Well, before trying safe mode, I disabled automatic restart on system crash so I could read the blue screen. There wasn't anything important on it, it said *** STOP: 0x00000000 (0xC0000000 0x,.... ) beginning physical memory dump physical memory dump complete That's not verbatim (obviously) but it didn't help me. so I booted in safe mode, and it stopped on the driver gagp30kx.sys and then restarted (and infinite loop of failure again). I burned a recovery CD and tried that. It loaded it, and I went into repair mode. I ran chkdsk and then disabled the AGP driver. Same thing on booting in safe mode except it stopped at mup.sys instead. I enabled the AGP driver again, and ran chkdsk again from the CD. It said it found problems but didn't say it fixed them. So I ran it a second time, and it said "performing additional checking or recovery" lots of times (I can't tell how many, they went above the screen top). I tried booting again and no luck. Every time I run chkdsk after trying to boot again it says it found and fixed more errors. I think it might be whatever driver is after the AGP driver, but I don't know what it is or how to find out. Can anyone help me fix this?

• New router, old network, but devices won't talk to each other

  I plugged the new router in and get internet on both the computer and the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 only recognizes the computer when I turn the Smart Wall off in my Norton antivirus, and only when the computer is hardwired. How do I make it so that Norton will allow the computer and Xbox to talk? Reset the MAC address? I have no idea how to do this, and I'm starting to think it's the answer to my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• DNS - Redirect from old server to new.

  I have a server, (Server A) Windows Server 2003 that I was hosting some sites on. Now they are hosted on a different server (Server B). I recently switched the DNS at godaddy to point to the new nameservers. Is there something I can do on Server A to point all requests to Server A to Server B (basically a redirect from Server A to B)? What type of record would that be? This is while I'm waiting for the DNS changes I made to fully resolve. edit To further clarify. test.com may still be resolving to Server A, I'd like a DNS record on Server A that tells it to go to the new server. Is that possible?

• Need Advice: What Linux distro should I install on an old PowerPC Mac

  I'm trying to set up my brother - who has a PPC mac, with 1 ghz processor and 256 ram, with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this mac, they also know that support has faded for the new browsers rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web.   I'm attempting to install Nagios plugins on a Zimbra 8.0.2 server running CentOS 6.4, but have run into the following error when I run yum install nagios-plugins-all Error: Package: nagios-plugins-mysql-1.4.15-2.el5.x86_64 (epel) Requires: libmysqlclient.so.15()(64bit) Error: Package: nagios-plugins-pgsql-1.4.15-2.el5.x86_64 (epel) Requires: libpq.so.4()(64bit) Error: Package: nagios-plugins-mysql-1.4.15-2.el5.x86_64 (epel) Requires: libmysqlclient.so.15(libmysqlclient_15)(64bit) You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest How can I install these libraries (libmysqlclient.so.15 & libpq.so.4)? Will installing these libraries possibly break Zimbra?
