• How to Reap Anticipated ROI in Large-Scale Capital Projects

  Only a small fraction of companies in asset-intensive industries reliably achieve expected ROI for major capital projects 90 percent of the time, according to a new industry study. In addition, 12 percent of companies see expected ROIs in less than half of their capital projects. The problem: no matter how sophisticated and far-reaching the planning processes are, many organizations struggle to manage risks or reap the expected value from major capital investments. The data is part of the larger survey of companies in oil and gas, mining and metals, chemicals, and utilities industries. The results appear in Prepare for the Unexpected: Investment Planning in Asset-Intensive Industries, a comprehensive new report sponsored by Oracle and developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Analysts say the shortcomings in large-scale, long-duration capital-investments projects often stem from immature capital-planning processes. The poor decisions that result can lead to significant financial losses and disappointing project benefits, which are particularly harmful to organizations during economic downturns. The report highlights three other important findings. Teaming the right data and people doesn’t guarantee that ROI goals will be achieved. Despite involving cross-functional teams and looking at all the pertinent data, executives are still failing to identify risks and deliver bottom-line results on capital projects. Effective processes are the missing link. Project-planning processes are weakest when it comes to risk management and predicting costs and ROI. Organizations participating in the study said they fail to achieve expected ROI because they regularly experience unexpected events that derail schedules and inflate budgets. But executives believe that using more-robust risk management and project planning strategies will help avoid delays, improve ROI, and more accurately predict the long-term cost of initiatives. Planning for unexpected events is a key to success. External factors, such as changing market conditions and evolving government policies are difficult to forecast precisely, so organizations need to build flexibility into project plans to make it easier to adapt to the changes. The report outlines a series of steps executives can take to address these shortcomings and improve their capital-planning processes. • Vector-based fonts vs. bitmap fonts in (2d) games?

  I know that many games are using bitmap fonts. Which are the advantages for vector-based font rendering / manipulation when compared to bitmap fonts and in which scenarios would they matter the most? Prefer a focus on 2d games when answering this question. If relevant, please include examples for games using either approach. Some factors you might consider: amount of text used in the game scaling of text overlaying glyphs and anti-aliasing general rendering quality font colors and styling user interface requirements localisation / unicode text wrapping and formatting cross-platform deployment 2d vs 3d Background: I am developing a simple falling blocks game in 2d, targeted for pc. I would like to add text labels for level, score, and menu buttons. I am using SFML which uses FreeType internally, so vector-based features are easily available for my project. In my view, font sizes in simple games often don't vary, and bitmap fonts should be easier for cross-platform concerns (font-formats and font rendering quality). But I am unsure if I am missing some important points here, especially since I want to polish the looks of the final game.

• Offshoring: does it ever work?

  I know there has been a fair amount of discussion on here about outsourcing/offshoring, and the general opinion seems to be that at best it is difficult, and at worst it fails. I have direct experience of offshoring myself; a previous company where I was a dev manager wanted to send some development offshore, and we ran a pilot scheme to see how well it would work. Of course it was a complete failure, although it is not completely clear to me whether this was down to the offshore devs being less talented, the process, or other factors (no doubt it was really a combination). I can see as a business how offshoring looks attractive (much lower day rate), but as far as I can see, the only way it could possibly work is if you do exceptionally detailed design up front, with incredibly detailed specifications; and by the time you have invested in producing that, you have probably spent as nearly as much as if you had written the actual code locally (which I think is an instance of No Silver Bullet) So, what I want to know is, does anyone here have any experience of offshoring actually working ever? Especially if there are any success stories of it working in a semi-agile way? I know there are developers here from all over the World; has anyone worked on an offshore project they consider successful?

  Oracle has a number of different engineered systems.  These are design to be highly integrated, optimized and secure systems.  The Exadata database engineered system and the Exalogic application engineered system are two good examples.  Often I am asked how these comply with different standards and regulations.  Exalogic is the Oracle engineered system that supports applications and the focus of today's blog.  First, we must recognize that as a collection of hardware and software, we cannot simply state that Exalogic is "compliant" with PCI DSS.  This is because Exalogic must be implemented within the context of one's existing IT infrastructure, the security features of that infrastructure, the governance framework that exists, security policies, operational procedures, and other factors.  What we can say though, is that Exalogic has been designed with various security capabilities that can be utilized to support compliance to PCI DSS as well as other standards and regulations (e.g., NIST and HIPAA).  Given that, Exalogic can be an excellant platform for running PCI related payment applications.  Coalfire Systems, a leading QSA in the US, has evaluated Exalogic against PCI DSS and supports this position.  Their evaluation can be found here: Exalogic and PCI Compliance. • Impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on Business and IT Operations

  The impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on business and IT operations varies from company to company. I think more and more companies are starting to view SOA as just another technology that they can incorporate in an existing or new system. One of the driving factors in using SOA is the reduction in maintenance costs and decrease in the time needed to bring products to market. The reductions in costs, and reduced turnaround time can be directly converted in to increased profitability due to less expenditures that are needed in order to maintain or create new systems. My personal perspective on SOA is that it is great for what it is actually intended to do. SOA allows systems to be distributed across networks or even the world while ensuring enterprise processing consistency, data integrity and preventing code duplication. This being said a lot of preparation and work goes into properly designing and implementing an SOA especially if an enterprise wants to take full advantage of its benefits. Even though SOA has recently gotten a lot of hype about its benefits it does not a perfect fit for all situations. At the end of the day SOA is just another tool in my tool belt that I can pull from to create solutions that meet the business’s needs. Based on current industry trends SOA appears to be a very solid technology to use moving forward, especially as more and more companies shift towards cloud based computing. It is important to remember that SOA is one of many technologies that can be used in creating business solutions and I think more time will be spent in the future evaluating if SOA is the right technology for a solution once the initial hype of SOA has calmed down.

• High-performance Academic Server [closed]

  Suppose I want to build a server for the university's academic interests. The server is dedicated only to a site, where users (students and lecturers) just view and fill the academic data. But at a time (e.g. once a semester), about 12,000 students will access the site simultaneously. Due to limitation of resources, I have to build the server using free software (except for the operating system Windows 7, the university has been prepared). The hardware is also limited to the usual 4-core computers (eg, Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7-3770) with approximately 16GB of memory (DDR3 1600 MHz), equipped with an RJ-45 port (Intel 82 579 Gigabit Ethernet). With all these limitations, I have to choose the software (web server, database, etc) are appropriate for this purpose is achieved. I decided to create a site in PHP. Please help me by answering the following questions based on your expertise. (my prime candidate software to consider after googling) Web server which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for PHP? And why? (nginx) PHP accelerator which is faster & stable & compatible with the selected web server? And why? (APC with Zend Optimizer+) Database which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for selected web server and selected PHP accelerator? (MySQL) Are there any errors that have been or will be happening from my condition is? If there is, please enlighten me? Is there anything else I need to know in order to achieve this goal? If there is, please enlighten me? I understand that the performance also depends on the implementation of source-code program, so I assume it will create a site with the best efficiency (e.g. using AJAX).

• Do cross reference database tables have a place in domain driven design?

  First some background. Let's say we have a system where a customer is placing an order in a web interface. The items that customer is ordering can priced in various ways. Sometimes including the cost of delivery and sometimes not at all. That pricing effectively depends on a variety of factors including the vendor's own pricing model, that vendor's individual contracts with customers as well as that vendor's contracts with its own suppliers. Let's assume that once a customer places an order for a particular item and chooses a contract if any, the method of delivery can be determined by variables on those contracts. Those delivery methods also live in their own table in the database and have various properties consumed downstream. It makes sense that a cross reference or lookup table would store that information. That table would be loaded into the domain and could then be used to apply the appropriate delivery method while processing the order. Does this make sense in the context of domain driven design? Or is my thinking too relational? Is this logic that should be built into it's own class/method (I mean beyond apply the cross reference table data)?

• What do I need to learn to decide on rename/recompile source package names because of company rebranding?

  My company is currently at a rebranding process and the brand names have been used in the sources' package names but these names are only visible to developers who maintain this code so nobody from project management is really interested in changing them considering also that it would imply the recompiling of several old components. What factors do I need to consider when deciding on a change like that? I don't know if I should worry about legal issues or not and if so, how to address this with project management. More background details. I have all the sources and dependencies but since the company rebranding, other development areas have adopted some of the code that needs package name-changing so I cannot take the decision only by myself so I don't make everyone else's code to crash with my core components and I cannot change other areas' code without the permission of those areas' users so yes, my concern is more political than technical. I am going try to coordinate the involved it areas to make the change anyway, since it seems to be the best approach.   Unfortunatelly in my company there's no continuous integration build server so we build our code manually on demand and to get something to production I have to justify the change (even just the package name changing) to QA with an user requirement and some other bureaucratic documentation so that's why I was hesitating the change in first place.

• How to identify web development benchmarking questions? [closed]

  I am in my final year of college and I have to put forward some sort of thesis for my final year project. The project is a web based attendance system that I am building for the college. I have it about 70% complete in Java. After completing it in Java, the plan is for me to rewrite the server bit in Erlang and then release the bitter rivals in a head to head cage match. The idea being that there is some sort of grounds for comparison. There are a few hurdles along the way, such as me learning Erlang. I understand that a performance comparison like this isn't strictly scientific as there are many factors such as the programmer (myself); the hardware it runs on; etc... but it is meant to be a reasonable comparison of the merits of using Java vs. Erlang for web development. I need help in identifying what the relevant questions are that my project could address. Even though the project scope is fixed, I am trying to shoehorn in some worthwhile scientific inquiries.

• Learning how to design knowledge and data flow [closed]

  In designing software, I spend a lot of time deciding how the knowledge (algorithms / business logic) and data should be allocated between different entities; that is, which object should know what. I am asking for advice about books, articles, presentations, classes, or other resources that would help me learn how to do it better. I code primarily in Python, but my question is not really language-specific; even if some of the insights I learn don't work in Python, that's fine. I'll give a couple examples to clarify what I mean. Example 1 I want to perform some computation. As a user, I will need to provide parameters to do the computation. I can have all those parameters sent to the "main" object, which then uses them to create other objects as needed. Or I can create one "main" object, as well as several additional objects; the additional objects would then be sent to the "main" object as parameters. What factors should I consider to make this choice? Example 2 Let's say I have a few objects of type A that can perform a certain computation. The main computation often involves using an object of type B that performs some interim computation. I can either "teach" A instances what exact parameters to pass to B instances (i.e., make B "dumb"); or I can "teach" B instances to figure out what needs to be done when looking at an A instance (i.e., make B "smart"). What should I think about when I'm making this choice?

• What should a programmer's yearly routine be to maximize their technical skills?

  2 years ago I made a big career change into programming. I learned various technologies on my own without any prior experience. I really love it and feel lucky with all the resources around us to help us learn. Books, courses, open-source, etc. There are so many avenues. I'm wondering what a good routine would be to follow to maximize my software development skills. I don't believe just building software is the way, because that leaves no time for learning new concepts or technologies. I'm looking for an answer like this: Take a new concept sabbatical/workshop 2 weeks per year. Read 1 theoretical and 1 practical programming book per year. Learn 1 additional language every 2 years. Take a 1 week vacation every 6 months. Etc. I realize that the above might sound naive and unrealistic as there are so many factors. But I'd like to know the "recipe" that you think is best that will serve as a guide for people.

  I have been asked to summarise the pros and cons in connection with the choices between Microsoft Office Vs OpenOffice. I have a broad idea of what needs to be said. However I would like to open a discussion here and have a single place to go to when the time comes to give the summary to management. There are obvious points of contention: For me the lack of compliance with Group Policy is a major concern [Default save location/visibility of C:/Visibility of files and folders on the HDD] However I am sure that functionality and compatibility will be the prime mover. We are looking at making major savings by reducing our commitment to Microsoft licensing. So what are your experiences? What happens when there are no direct equivalents? [Word has a close match in OpenOffice, but a database solution match is not as close, neither is an Outlook [connecting to Exchange Server and downloading all calendars, shared calendars, scheduled events, for Exchange will still exist after the move to OpenSource solutions] In summary then: What do you see as: The benefits of this plan?   I've been engaged as a scout leader in the Scout movement since 1993, working on a local and national level, leading both kids and other scout leaders.Last year, the Swedish Scout Association invited 40000 scouts aged 14-17 years old from 150 countries around the world to go camping for 10 days. I was on the planning team with a couple of hundreds of my closest scout friends and during a couple of years we spent our spare time planning logistics, food, program, etc to give these youths an experience of a life time. It was a big and complex project; different languages, religion (Ramadan was celebrated during the camp) and the Swedish weather were some of the factors we had to take into account. The camp was a huge success, the daily wow factor was measured and people truly had fun and got to know each other. I learnt a lot and got friends around the globe - looking back at the pictures it feels unreal that we managed it.The Java platform as OpenJDK and its' future is a similar project in my mind. With 9 million developers and being installed on 3 bn devices, the platform touches a lot of users and businesses. There's a strong community taking Java into the future, making sure it stays relevant. Finding ways to collaborate in a scalable way is the key to success here. We have the bylaws directing how decisions are made, roles are appointed and how to "level" within the community. Using these, we can then make contributions according to our competence and interest and innovate taking our platform into the future.If you find a way to organize volunteers towards a common goal, solving conflicts, making decisions, dividing the work into manageable chunks and having fun while doing it - there's no end to what you can achieve.

• Location Change Salary Differences [closed]

  DISCLAIMER: I know that this might be a "regional" question but I'm also asking for help as far as what resources to use to determine my decision. I'm currently talking to a recruiter for a game developer in the SF Bay area. I work in a relatively low-cost area in the south. I really want to get into game development but my current career is general web development. I'm very interested in taking the job, but my concern is that the amount they're willing to pay might be a relative pay cut. Here are some factors: It's not an entry-level position, the title is Senior Software Engineer. I have 5+ years of experience. The calculators online tell me that I should be expecting around 2x my current pay rate(http://www.bestplaces.net/col/). My current pay is in the mid $60k/yr, so that's like 120-130k. The recruiter told me at my experience level I can expect about $90-100/yr, and that those cost of living calculators were way off. The benefits will definitely be better, it's much larger company (help with commuting, catered meals, etc). But is the recruiter trying to give me a snow job on the pay scale, or is that a reasonable change from a smallish town in the south to somewhere in the SF bay area? How can I find this out? Glassdoor and Payscale seem to say "senior software developers" in that area make around 110 in median salary, but Payscale says it's closer to $135k, that range seems pretty large.

• Iterative and Incremental Principle Series 5: Conclusion

  Thank you for joining me in the final segment in the Iterative and Incremental series.  During yesterday’s segment, I discussed Iteration Planning, and specifically how I planned my daily exercise (iteration) each morning by assessing multiple factors, while following my overall Implementation plan. As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, regardless of the type of exercise or how many increment sets I decide to complete each day, I apply the 6 minute interval sets and a timebox approach.  When the 6 minutes are up, I stop the interval, even if I have more to give, saving the extra energy to apply to my next interval set.   Timeboxes are used to manage iterations.  Once the pre-determined iteration duration is reached – whether it is 2 weeks or 6 weeks or somewhere in between-- the iteration is complete.  Iteration group items (requirements) not fully addressed, in relation to the iteration goal, are addressed in the next iteration.  This approach helps eliminate the “rolling deadline” and better allows the project manager to assess the project progress earlier and more frequently than in traditional approaches. Not only do smaller, more frequent milestones allow project managers to better assess potential schedule risks and slips, but process improvement is encouraged.  Even in my simple example, I learned, after a few interval sets, not to sprint uphill!  Now I plan my route more efficiently to ensure that I sprint on a level surface to reduce of the risk of not completing my increment.  Project managers have often told me that they used an iterative and incremental approach long before OUM.   An effective project manager naturally organizes project work consistent with this principle, but a key benefit of OUM is that it formalizes this approach so it happens by design rather than by chance.    I hope this series has encouraged you to think about additional ways you can incorporate the iterative and incremental principle into your daily and project life.  I further hope that you will share your thoughts and experiences with the rest of us.

• If the bug is 5+ years old, then is it a feature?

  Allow me to add details: I work at an institutional place with many coders, testers, QA analysts, product owners, etc. and here is something that bugs me: We have been able to sell crappy (albeit pretty functional) software for over a decade. It has many features and the product is competitive, but there are a some serious bugs out there, as well as thousands of "paper cuts" - little annoyances that clients need to get used to. It pains me to look at some of the things because I firmly believe that if computers do not help to make our lives easier, then we should not use them. I have confidence in my colleagues - they are smart, able, and can improve things when the focus is on doing that. But, it can be difficult to file bugs against some old functionality without seeing them closed or forgotten. "It worked like that for ions" is a typical answer. Also, when QA does regression, they tend to look for anything that is different as much as anything that does not seem right. So, a fix to an old problem can be written up as a bug, because "it has been like that before even my time". The young coder in me thinks: rewrite this freaking thing! As someone who had the opportunity to be close to sales, clients, I want to give a benefit of a doubt to this approach. I am interested in your opinion/experience as well. Please try to consider risk, cost-to-benefit, and other non-technical factors.

• How to merge Windows registry hives directly without converting them to an intermediate text based file?

  Help! I'm going to get fired if I can't figure out how to do this by tomorrow. Microsoft Windows stores its registry databases (known as "registry hives" - there's actually a backstory to the origin of this name, but I digress) in a proprietary binary format. Answer this correctly or you lose your job: Let H-sub-A be the registry hive of Computer A, and let H-sub-B be the registry hive of Computer B. Create a registry hive H-sub-A-prime (in the native binary format) that contains all of the registry keys and values in both H-sub-A and H-sub-B. If there is overlap, let the value from H-sub-B overwrite the value in H-sub-A.   I'm attempting to use powershell to access a remote registry like so: $reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey("LocalMachine", $server) $key = $reg.OpenSubkey($subkeyPath) Depending on some factors that I'm not yet able to determine I either get Exception calling "OpenSubKey" with "1" argument(s): "Requested registry access is not allowed." Or System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation. at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32ErrorStatic(Int32 errorCode, String str) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.OpenRemoteBaseKey(RegistryHive hKey, String machineName) It seems pretty clear that this is because the user I'm running the powershell script as doesn't have the appropriate credentials to access the remote registry. I'd like to be able to supply a set of credentials to use for the remote registry access, but I can find no documentation anywhere of a way to do this. I'm also not clear on exactly where to specify which users are allowed to access the registry remotely.

• Spatial index for geo coordinates?

  What kind of data structure could be used for an efficient nearest neighbor search in a large set of geo coordinates? With "regular" spatial index structures like R-Trees that assume planar coordinates, I see two problems (Are there others I have overlooked?): Wraparound at the poles and the International Date Line Distortion of distances near the poles How can these factors be allowed for? I guess the second one could compensated by transforming the coordinates. Can an R-Tree be modified to take wraparound into account? Or are there specialized geo-spatial index structures?
