Rendering maps from raw SVG data in Java

In an application of mine I have to display locations and great circle paths in a map which is rendered to PNG and then displayed on the web. For this I simply use a world map (NASA's Blue Marbel in fact) scaled to various "zoom levels" as base image and only display the a part of it matching the final image size and fitting all items to be displayed. Straight forward so far. Now I came across Wikipedia's awesome blank SVG maps which contain all the country codes for easy reference and I was wondering whether it was possible to use those to have more customized colors and to highliht countries etc. So I did a bit of googling and was looking for Java libraries which would enable me to load the blank SVG map to memory allows for easy reference/selection of certain paths do manipulations of coloring, stroke widths etc render to a buffered image as the background for the great-circle paths/nodes What I came across quite often was Batik, but it looks like a really heavy framework and I'm not quite sure whether it is what I'm looking for. I have recently played around with Raphaël a bit and I like the way it handles working with vector graphics in code. If the Java framework for my purpose would feature a similar interface, that would be a nice-to-have. Any recommendations what toolset would be approriate for my purposes?

So far I've solved this using read.table(comment.char = ">", skip = x, nrow = y) (x and y are currently fixed). This reads the data between the header and >>> end of file. However, I would like to make my function a bit more plastic regarding the number of rows. Data may have values larger than 800, and consequently more rows. I could scan or readLines the file and see which row corresponds to the >>> end of file and calculate the number of lines to be read. What approach would you use?

Avoid using InetAddress - Getting a raw IP address in network byte order

Hey, I am trying to use the MaxMind GeoLite Country database on the Google App Engine. However, I am having difficulty getting the Java API to work as it relies on the InetAddress class which is not available to use on the App Engine. However, I am not sure if there is a simple workaround as it appears it only uses the InetAddress class to determine the IP of a given hostname. In my case, the hostname is always an IP anyway. What I need is a way to convert an IP address represented as a String into a byte array of network byte order (which the addr.getAddress() method of the InetAddress class provides). This is the code the current API uses, I need to find a way of removing all references to InetAddress whilst ensuring it still works! Linux tool to send raw data to a TCP server

Hi, I am aware that this is not a direct 'development' question but I need that info to test a development project, so I think someone could've hit similar problem. I will test a software that runs a TCP server and according to sent commands replies some answers. I will test the software and do not want to write code if it doesn't work well. So I want to send those commands and test drive the server software. How can I achieve this with a Linux box?

Python: How to quit CLI when stuck in blocking raw_input?

I have a GUI program which should also be controllable via CLI (for monitoring). The CLI is implemented in a while loop using raw_input. If I quit the program via a GUI close button, it hangs in raw_input and does not quit until it gets an input. How can I immediately abort raw_input without entering an input? I run it on WinXP but I want it to be platform independent, it should also work within Eclipse since it is a developer tool. Python version is 2.6. I searched stackoverflow for hours and I know there are many answers to that topic, but is there really no platform independent solution to have a non-blocking CLI reader? If not, what would be the best way to overcome this problem? Thanks

ANY way to consolidate this code?

I am building a PHP registration form which takes the following fields for up to 20 athletes: First Name Middle Initial Last Name Federation Number Address City State Zip DOB SSN Phone Email I am only through 7 of the fields for each fighter and my php file is very large (over 40kb). Is there ANY way to consolidate this code at all? I am also having to validate the information on each field (as I said - 20 athletes x 12 fields = 240 validations on a single page). using CSS to center FLOATED input elements wrapped in a DIV

There's no shortage of questions and answers about centering but I've not been able to get it to work given my specific circumstances, which involve floating. I want to center a container DIV that contains three floated input elements (split-button, text, checkbox), so that when my page is resized wider, they go from this: ||.....[ ][v] [ ] [ ] label .....|| to this ||......................[ ][v] [ ] [ ] label.......................|| They float fine, but when the page is made wider, they stay to the left: ||.....[ ][v] [ ] [ ] label .......................................|| If I remove the float so that the input elements are stacked rather than side-by-side: [ ][v] [ ] [ ] label then they DO center correctly when the page is resized. SO it is the float being applied to the elements of the DIV#hbox inside the container that is messing up the centering. Is what I want to do impossible because of the way float is designed to work? Is there a 64-bit Windows 7 driver for a Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel?

I've used my Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel for more years than I can remember (I definitely had it back when I was playing Viper Racing, though). Sadly, Logitech does not appear to support the wheel in any capacity, even as an analog input device. At this point, I'm looking for any sort of driver that will take input from the device. I don't care at all about the force feedback but, if it were available, I'd be happy to take it. The target operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. EDIT: Just in case I'm not clear above: I know where the standard driver download sites are and have tried them out. The problem is that Logitech has officially end-of-lifed this wheel so their latest software specifically does not support it. Sadly, their older software that does support it is 32-bit only so I'm out of luck on that front.

Odd behavior on Shift-{Esc,Fx}

Sometimes, when changing between the modes in Vim, I forget to take my finger off the Shift key. This innocent mistake is probably part of the luggage carried over from other terminals, but I have never seen my input treated this way. After changing from command mode to input mode, if I hit the Esc key while the Shift key is down, Vim will display <9b (Control Sequence Introducer) instead of switching to the command mode. At least two work-arounds to this intended behavior are available on the mintty site (faq, issue). Forbid language switch for certain application(s)

I have a problem of accidental input language switch. I tried many different settings in order to not do it - change hotkey, install some software (Key Switcher, Keyboard Ninja, Punto Switcher)... But nothing helped. I used to certain hotkey (Ctrl+Shift). Any other hotkey make me even more suffer. The software s found has no feature to avoid accidental switches. What I want is to find a piece of software which can stick "English US" input language to my "Visual Studio". And any Ctrl+Shift pushes inside VS should not lead to language switch. Have any ideas?

iptables rule on INPUT between 2 ethernet cards on the same host

I have 2 eth cards on the same host. Both connected directly with LAN cable. I set eth0 with ip - 192.168.1.2 I set eth1 with ip - 192.168.1.1 I set this rule: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -j NFQUEUE --queue-num 0 There are no other rules. (I ran iptables -X,-F) I send TCP syn packet ( with c++ program by using raw socket) from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.1 In wireshark i see that the packet received on eth0, but the iptables rule (above) dosnt apply for this packet. when i sent the packet to remote host and apply this rule on the remote host than it work correct. So, i guess that this is due to the fact that both eth cards exists the same host. . I need to create iptables INPUT rule for local eth card (dest and src on the same machine ). I need it for simplify test. Did i guess the problem correct? is there a way to bypass this? Ps - connected them via switch didn't help. the rule wasn't applied. Run on Ubuntu. tcp checksum and tcp offloading

i am using raw sockets to create my own socket. i need to set the tcp_checksum. i have tried a lot of references but all are not working (i am using wireshark for testing). could you help me please. by the way, i read somewhere that if you set tcp_checksum=0. then the hardware will calculate the checksum automatically for you. is this true? i tried it, but in wireshark the tcp_checksum gives a value of 0X000 and says tcp offload. i also read about tcp offloading, and didn't understand, is it only that wireshark is cannot check an offloaded tcp checksum, but there is a correct one??

I have a page with a form, and on the form are a bunch of input check boxes. How to allow multiple inputs from user using R?

For example, if I need that the user specifies the number of rows and columns of a matrix: PROMPT: Number of rows?: USER INPUT: [a number] I need that R 'waits' for the input. Then save [a number] into a variable v1. Next, PROMPT: Number of columns?: USER INPUT: [another number] Also save [another number] into a variable v2. At the end, I will have two variables (v1, v2) that will be used in the rest of the code. "readline" only works for one input at a time. I can't run the two lines together v1 <- readline("Number of rows?: ") v2 <- readline("Number of columns?: ") Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance

Changing function parameters for onkeypress event according to source id

How do I create a loop based off this array?

I'm trying to process this array, first testing for the presence of a check, then extrapolating the data from quantity to return a valid price. Here's the input for fixed amounts of items, with no variable quantity. <input type="checkbox" name="measure[<?=$item->id?>][checked]" value="<?=$item->id?>"> <input type="hidden" name="measure[<?=$item->id?>][quantity]" value="1" /> Here's the inputs for variable amounts of items. <input type="checkbox" name="measure[<?=$item->id?>][checked]" value="<?=$item->id?>"> <input class="item_mult" value="0" type="text" name="measure[<?=$item->id?>][quantity]" /> So, the resulting array is multidimensional. Here's an output: Array ( [1] => Array ( [quantity] => 1 ) [2] => Array ( [quantity] => 1 ) [3] => Array ( [quantity] => 1 ) ... [14] => Array ( [checked] => 14 [quantity] => 999 ) ) Here's the loop I'm using to take this array and process items checked off the form in the first place.
