  • QuestionOrAnswer model?

    My site has Listings. Users can ask Questions about listings, and the author of the listing can respond with an Answer. However, the Answer might need clarification, so I've made them recursive (you can "answer" an answer). So how do I set up the database? The way I have it now looks like this (in Django-style models): class QuestionOrAnswer(Model): user = ForeignKey(User, related_name='questions') listing = ForeignKey(Listing, related_name='questions') parent = models.ForeignKey('self', null=True, blank=True, related_name='children') message = TextField() But what bugs me is that listing is now an attribute of the answers as well (it doesn't need to be). What happens if the database gets mangled and an answer belongs to a different listing than its parent question? That just doesn't make any sense. We can separate it with polymorphism: QuestionOrAnswer user message created updated Question(QuestionOrAnswer) shipment Answer(QuestionOrAnswer) parent = ForeignKey(QuestionOrAnswer) And that ought to work, but now ever question and answer is split into 2 tables. Is it worth this overhead for clearly defined models?

  • Java creation of new set too slow

    I have this program where it have some recursive function similar to this: lambda(HashSet<Integer> s){ for(int i=0;i<w;i++){ HashSet<Integer> p = (HashSet) s.clone(); p.addAll(get_next_set()); lambda(p); } } What I'm doing is union every set with the set s. And run lambda on each one of the union. I run a profiler and found the c.clone() operation took 100% of the time of my code. Are there any way to speed this up considerably?

  • svn:switch doesn't work with relative svn:external?

    We have a subfolder that is a relative svn external (../project/subfolder). In a fresh trunk checkout it points to (...TRUNK/project/subfolder) and in a fresh branch checkout it points to (...BRANCH/branchName/project/subfolder). But if you do a switch on the project containing the subfolder, the subfolder stays pointing at TRUNK. Alternately if you do a BRANCH checkout and switch to TRUNK it stays pointing at BRANCH. Shouldn't an svn:switch update relative externals? Is there some sort of recursive svn:switch I should be running?

  • With Maven, how would I prevent Maven from filtering certain properties but allowing others?

    The problem is that I'm trying to build a project that has in its resources a build.xml file. Basically, I package my project as a jar with Maven2, and then use ant installer to install my project. There is a property in the build.xml file that I need to filter called build.date, but there are other properties that I don't want to filter, like ${basedir}, because it's used by the ant installer but gets replaced by Maven's basedir variable. So, I need to somehow tell Maven to filter ${build.date}, but not ${basedir}. I tried creating a properties file as a filter with "basedir=${basedir}" as one of the properties, but I get the following error: Resolving expression: '${basedir}': Detected the following recursive expression cycle: [basedir] Any suggestions would be much appreciated.   • Capture KeyUp event on form when child control has focus

    I need to capture the KeyUp event in my form (to toggle a "full screen mode"). Here's what I'm doing: protected override void OnKeyUp(KeyEventArgs e) { base.OnKeyUp(e); if (e.KeyCode == Keys.F12) this.ToggleFullScreen(); } private void ToggleFullScreen() { // Snazzy code goes here } This works fine, unless a control on the form has focus. In that case, I don't get the event at all (also tried OnKeyDown - no luck there either). I could handle the KeyUp event from the child control, but the controls on the form are generated dynamically, and there may be many of them - each having many children of their own. Is there any way to do this without generating event handlers for every control on the screen (which I certainly could do with a recursive function)?

  • What is it about Fibonacci numbers?

    Fibonacci numbers have become a popular introduction to recursion for Computer Science students and there's a strong argument that they persist within nature. For these reasons, many of us are familiar with them. They also exist within Computer Science elsewhere too; in surprisingly efficient data structures and algorithms based upon the sequence. There are two main examples that come to mind: Fibonacci heaps which have better amortized running time than binomial heaps. Fibonacci search which shares O(log N) running time with binary search on an ordered array. Is there some special property of these numbers that gives them an advantage over other numerical sequences? Is it a density quality? What other possible applications could they have? It seems strange to me as there are many natural number sequences that occur in other recursive problems, but I've never seen a Catalan heap.

  • Directory file size calculation - how to make it faster?

    Using C#, I am finding the total size of a directory. The logic is this way : Get the files inside the folder. Sum up the total size. Find if there are sub directories. Then do a recursive search. I tried one another way to do this too : Using FSO (obj.GetFolder(path).Size). There's not much of difference in time in both these approaches. Now the problem is, I have tens of thousands of files in a particular folder and its taking like atleast 2 minute to find the folder size. Also, if I run the program again, it happens very quickly (5 secs). I think the windows is caching the file sizes. Is there any way I can bring down the time taken when I run the program first time??

  • LINQ2SQL: orderby note.hasChildren(), name ascending

    I have a hierarchical data structure which I'm displaying in a webpage as a treeview. I want to data to be ordered to first show nodes ordered alphabetically which have no children, then under these nodes ordered alphabetically which have children. Currently I'm ordering all nodes in one group, which means nodes with children appear next to nodes with no children. I'm using a recursive method to build up the treeview, which has this LINQ code at it's heart: var filteredCategory = from c in category orderby c.Name ascending where c.ParentCategoryId == parentCategoryId && c.Active == true select c; So this is the orderby statement I want to enhance.     What is the best way to flatten an array with multiple leaf nodes so that each full path to leaf is a distinct return? array("Object"=>array("Properties"=>array(1, 2))); to yield Object.Properties.1 Object.Properties.2 I'm able to flatten to Object.Properties.1 but 2 does not get processed with recursive function: function flattenArray($prefix, $array) { $result = array(); foreach ($array as $key => $value) { if (is_array($value)) $result = array_merge($result, flattenArray($prefix . $key . '.', $value)); else $result[$prefix . $key] = $value; } return $result; } I presume top down will not work when anticipating multiple leaf nodes, so either need some type of bottom up processing or a way to copy array for each leaf and process (althought that seems completely inefficient)

    I transform XML to (sort of) HTML with XSL stylesheets (using Apache Xalan). In XML there can be entities like &mdash;, which must be left as is. In beginning of XML file I have a doctype which references these entities. What should I do for entity to be left unchanged? <!DOCTYPE article [ <!ENTITY mdash "&mdash;"><!-- em dash --> ]> gives me SAXParseException: Recursive entity expansion, 'mdash' when encountering &mdash in XML text.

    Hi, I tried using Apple's shell script to automate doc set creation with every build (and loading that in XCode) - http://developer.apple.com/tools/creatingdocsetswithdoxygen.html but found that it had some bugs. Firstly it's not updating the entries in doxygen.config, perhaps one needs to put the settings in the exact hierarchy as it appears in the native doxygen file (?).     Hi, Let's say I have the following file tree: / include/ library/ a.hpp b.hpp src/ a.cpp b.cpp And the following /src/a.cpp file: #include "a.hpp" #include "b.hpp" I always open Vim at the root directory. So when I want to load a.hpp I do : :tabnew include/library/a.hpp or: :tabnew **/a.hpp I'd like to map <F4> to open the file under the cursor in a new tab, using a recursive search. I tried the following mapping command: :map <F4> :tabnew **/expand("<cfile>")<cr> But obviously, this can't work, as it tries to open the file "/expand(" instead. Any clue on how I could do that ?     I am trying to examine the contents of an assembly and find all classes in it that are directly or indirectly derived from Windows.Forms.UserControl. I am doing this: Assembly dll = Assembly.LoadFrom(filename); var types = dll.GetTypes().Where(x => x.BaseType == typeof(UserControl)); But it is giving an empty list because none of the classes directly extend UserControl. I don't know enough about reflection to do it quickly, and I'd rather not write a recursive function if I don't have to.

    I'm not sure if I can't find this or if my google-fu is just lacking at the moment: I've got some HTML template files included in a package, with the following MANIFEST.in: recursive-include flockdoc/templates *.html In development, I'm including these (for Jinja) by doing path calculations, assuming that the "templates" directory is next to a certain file. When the package is installed with setup.py (using setuptools) the templates aren't copied into site-packages with the code. I understand that they're supposed to be somewhere like dist-packages, but none of the documentation I can find is pointing me to where the actual files are. It's also not giving me "best practice" for including these in my code. Any suggestions would be welcome there. the setup.py in question So: where are my files?

  • Why does File::Find finished short of completely traversing a large directory?

    A directory exists with a total of 2,153,425 items (according to Windows folder Properties). It contains .jpg and .gif image files located within a few subdirectories. The task was to move the images into a different location while querying each file's name to retrieve some relevant info and store it elsewhere. The script that used File::Find finished at 20462 files. Out of curiosity I wrote a tiny recursive function to count the items which returned a count of 1,734,802. I suppose the difference can be accounted for by the fact that it didn't count folders, only files that passed the -f test. The problem itself can be solved differently by querying for file names first instead of traversing the directory. I'm just wondering what could've caused File::Find to finish at a small fraction of all files. The data is stored on an NTFS file system.

I can do type1 == type2 and get general equality I can have a recursive loop where I repeat the above step for type1.BaseType until the BaseType is null. I can do type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null to check if type2 is an interface of type1 If I put it all together, I get if ( type2.IsInterface ) return type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null; while ( type1 != null ) { if ( type1 == type2 ) return true; type1 = type1.BaseType; } return false; Is that all the is keyword is. I cannot find the right keyword to plug into the Reflector search to find the function and a google search on "is" was not really helpful

Now, I can find lots of examples of recursive invocation, but I haven't found one of just label concatenation involving passed-in macro arguments. Gas is quite poorly documented, so answering this question is difficult for me. Can you concatenate arguments to macros with other tokens to make single tokens? What's your favorite gas assembler reference?

  • Better data-structure design

    Currently in my application I have a single table that is giving me a bit of trouble. The issue at hand is I have a value object that is mapped to this table. When the data is returned to me as an array of value objects, I have to then loop through this array and begin my recursion by matching the ParentID to parent ObjectID's. The column ParentID is either null (acts a parent) or it holds the value of an ObjectID. I know there has to be a better way to create this data structure so that I do not have to do recursive loops to match ParentID's with their ObjectID's. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.   • Space requirements of a merge-sort

    I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it.   • Getting a table's values into a tree

    So, I have a table like such: id|root|kw1|kw2|kw3|kw4|kw5|name 1| A| B| C| D| E| F|fileA 2| A| B| | | | |fileB 3| B| C| D| E| | |fileC 4| A| B| | | | |fileD (several hundred rows...) And I need to get it into a tree like the following: *A *B -fileB -fileD *C *D *E *F -fileA *B *C *D *E -fileC I'm pretty sure the table is laid out poorly but it's what I have to live with. I've read a little about Adjacency List Model & Modified Preorder Tree Traversal but I don't think my data is laid out correctly. I think this requires a recursive function, but I'm not at all sure how to go about that. I'm open to any ideas of how to get this done even if it means extracting the data into a new table just to process this. Are there any good options available to me or any good ways to do this? (Examples are a bonus of course)

    Consider the case of a templated function with variadic template arguments: template<typename Tret, typename... T> Tret func(const T&... t); Now, I have a tuple t of values. How do I call func() using the tuple values as arguments? I've read about the bind() function object, with call() function, and also the apply() function in different some now-obsolete documents. The GNU GCC 4.4 implementation seems to have a call() function in the bind() class, but there is very little documentation on the subject. Some people suggest hand-written recursive hacks, but the true value of variadic template arguments is to be able to use them in cases like above. Does anyone have a solution to is, or hint on where to read about it?

When we hit a 0 in the array (i.e. Hit(0, 0), Hit(1, 1), but not Hit(3, 0)) I would like all the adjacent zeros to the zero we hit to be incremented by 10. So if I call Hit(1, 1), the array should become the following. static int[,] arr = new int[5, 5] { { 10, 10, 10, 01, 00 }, { 10, 10, 01, 01, 00 }, { 10, 10, 01, 01, 00 }, { 10, 10, 01, 01, 00 }, { 10, 10, 10, 01, 00 }, }; Any idea how I could implement that? It sounds to me like a Depth First Search/Recursive sort-of algorithm should do the job, but I haven't been able to implement it for an 2d array. Thanks for the help!

  • Why does s ++ t not lead to a stack overflow for large s?

    I'm wondering why Prelude> head $ reverse $ [1..10000000] ++ [99] 99 does not lead to a stack overflow error. The ++ in the prelude seems straight forward and non-tail-recursive: (++) :: [a] -> [a] -> [a] (++) [] ys = ys (++) (x:xs) ys = x : xs ++ ys So just with this, it should run into a stack overflow, right? So I figure it probably has something to do with the ghc magic that follows the definition of ++: {-# RULES "++" [~1] forall xs ys. xs ++ ys = augment (\c n -> foldr c n xs) ys #-} Is that what helps avoiding the stack overflow? Could someone provide some hint for what's going on in this piece of code?
