  • Configuring port forwarding for SSH - no response outside LAN [migrated]

    - by WinnieNicklaus
I recently moved, and at the same time purchased a new router (Linksys E1200). Prior to the move, I had my old router set up to forward a port for SSH to servers on my LAN, and I was using DynDNS to manage the external IP address. Everything worked great. I moved and set up the new router (unfortunately, the old one is busted so I can't try things out with it), updated the DynDNS address, and attempted to restore my port forwarding settings. No joy. SSH connections time out, and pings go unanswered. But here's the weird part (i.e., key to the whole thing?): I can ping and SSH just fine from within this LAN. I'm not talking about the local 192.168.1.* addresses. I can actually SSH from a computer on my LAN to the DynDNS external address. It's only when the client is outside the LAN that connections are dropped. This surely suggests a particular point of failure, but I don't know enough to figure out what it is. I can't figure out why it would make a difference where the connections originate, unless there's a filter for "trusted" IP addresses, which is perhaps just restricted to my own. No settings have been touched on the servers, and I can't find any settings suggesting this on the router admin interface. I disabled the router's SPI firewall and "Filter anonymous traffic" setting to no avail. Has anyone heard of this behavior, and what can I do to get past it?

  • Poor Write Performance in VM inside Proxmox PVE 2.0

    - by sorsenne
I am running a PVE 2.0 on a decent Hardware (2 SATA HDDs as RAID1, 12GB RAM, i7 CPU) but the I/O Performance is very poor inside the VM (Ubuntu 11.10 Server). The very same VM was copied to another Server running simply Ubuntu Server with KVM and had better I/O Perf. this is how the HDD is shown in the Guest: ata1: SATA link up 6.0 Gbps (SStatus 133 SControl 300) ata1.00: ATA-8: ST3000DM001-9YN166, CC49, max UDMA/133 ata1.00: 5860533168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 31/32), AA ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA ST3000DM001-9YN1 CC49 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 5860533168 512-byte logical blocks: (3.00 TB/2.72 TiB) sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 4096-byte physical blocks sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA I tested with DD: $ dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync 128+0 records in 128+0 records out 134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 19.2222 s, 7.0 MB/s on the Host, this same Test will result with 156 MB/s in average. PS: I am using VirtIO and see no error in dmesg.

  • Very slow write performance on Debian 6.0 (AMD64) with DMCRYPT/LVM/RAID1

    - by jdelic
I'm seeing very strange performance characteristics on one of my servers. This server is running a simple two-disk software-RAID1 setup with LVM spanning /dev/md0. One of the logical volumes /dev/vg0/secure is encrypted using dmcrypt with LUKS and mounted with the sync and noatimes flag. Writing to that volume is incredibly slow at 1.8 MB/s and the CPU usage stays near 0%. There are 8 crpyto/1-8 processes running (it's a Intel Quadcore CPU). I hope that someone on serverfault has seen this before :-(. uname -a 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 00:01:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux Interestingly, when I read from the device I get good performance numbers: reading without encryption: $ dd if=/dev/vg0/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 68.8951 s, 95.1 MB/s reading with encryption: $ dd if=/dev/mapper/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 69.7116 s, 94.0 MB/s However, when I try to write to the device: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=64k 8809+0 records in 8809+0 records out 577306624 bytes (577 MB) copied, 321.861 s, 1.8 MB/s Also, when I read I see CPU usage, when I write, the CPU stays at almost 0% usage. • Ubuntu Keyboard response speed problem.

    - by Asaf
Hello, I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed, Using Gnome 2.30.0 I'm using a Laptop, HP Pavilion dv9000 I've stumbled on responsiveness issues with my keyboard, Sometimes it's really obvious - the keyboard doesn't respond fast enough to my typing. Checked sticky keys and all that, it's all disabled of course. Now, I also checked on Windows to see if the problem is Hardware or something, and there are no responsiveness issues there... I'm thinking it's Gnome (or the X). Thanks.

  • OpenDNS servers initial response is very slow

    - by Ben Collins
I've got a Time Warner cable ISP package (RoadRunner), and the modem they gave me doesn't allow me to specify which DNS servers to use; it always uses whatever the upstream dhcp server gives it. I prefer to use OpenDNS on my home network, so i've configured a couple of my PCs manually in the Windows adapter settings for IPv4 such that their IP addresses are obtained via DHCP, but the DNS server settings are fixed to the OpenDNS server IPs. Now, when I startup Windows on these PCs, it always takes 2-3 minutes to start receiving responses from the DNS servers; any request before that times out. While not debilitating, this is quite annoying. Any ideas why this might be happening?

  • ntpstat response fine but server time out of sync

    - by zedoo
Hi, I found out that the ntpd service that I've set up a few weeks ago on a Centos5 machine doesn't correctly synchronize the server time. I detected an offset of more than 5 minutes (by stopping ntpd and executing ntpdate). After setting up the service I checked the setup via ntpstat: [xxxx@xxx ~]$ ntpstat -q synchronised to local net at stratum 11 time correct to within 10 ms polling server every 1024 s I repeated this check every day and it always showed this output. Doesn't this output tell me that the server time is sane?

  • Win2k8R2 / IIS 7.5 - users getting 503 response, no 503 error reported in logs

    - by merk
I've got 2 web servers with mirrored content. There's a load balancer sitting in front of them. Starting yesterday we've been getting people complaining about 503 errors. i can't find any 503 errors in the IIS log file. However the server host is saying these errors are due to .Net errors in our website which are causing the app pool to recycle. They pointed out several errors in the windows application event log which look like this: Log Name: Application Source: ASP.NET 4.0.30319.0 Date: 3/31/2012 8:35:37 PM Event ID: 1309 Task Category: Web Event Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: 6251.local Description: Event code: 3005 Event message: An unhandled exception has occurred. Event time: 3/31/2012 8:35:37 PM Event time (UTC): 4/1/2012 1:35:37 AM Event ID: e7a580c7b38545cca3416a8595408f24 Event sequence: 97 Event occurrence: 1 Event detail code: 0 Application information: Application domain: /LM/W3SVC/2/ROOT-1-129777167518960645 Trust level: Full Application Virtual Path: / Application Path: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\mywebsite\ Machine name: 6252 Process information: Process ID: 20000 Process name: w3wp.exe Account name: IIS APPPOOL\MyAppPool In particular they are saying that the account name under Process Information indicates that the app pool is recycling. They said if the app pool were not recycle, the accountname would instead be the folder where the website files are located. I checked the app pool settings - it's set to recycle every 29 hours. And the rapid fail protection is set to the default of 5 failures in 5 minutes. But i have not seen 5 failures in the event log in that short of a time span. Can anyone help me confirm if the 503 responses are indeed being generated by the app pools recycling? Or are these errors coming from somewhere else? My guess at the time was their load balancer was the one actually returning the 503 error. But that was just a guess.

  • Why would a server not send a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

    - by codemonkey
Lately, we've become aware of a TCP connection issue that is mostly limited to mac and Linux users who browse our websites. From the user perspective, it presents itself as a really long connection time to our websites (11 seconds). We've managed to track down the technical signature of this problem, but can't figure out why it is happening or how to fix it. Basically, what is happening is that the client's machine is sending the SYN packet to establish the TCP connection and the web server receives it, but does not respond with the SYN/ACK packet. After the client has sent many SYN packets, the server finally responds with a SYN/ACK packet and everything is fine for the remainder of the connection. And, of course, the kicker to the problem: it is intermittent and does not happen all the time (though it does happen between 10-30% of the time) We are using Fedora 12 Linux as the OS and Nginx as the web server.

  • Server not sending a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

    - by jeff
Using iptraf, tcpdump and wireshark I can see a SYN packet coming in but only the ACK FLAG is set in reply packet. I'm running Debian 5 with kernel 2.6.36 I've turned off window_scaling and tcp_timestamps, tcp_tw_recycle and tcp_tw_reuse: cat /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0 I've attached an image of the wireshark output. http://imgur.com/pECG0.png Output to netstat netstat -natu | grep '72.23.130.104' tcp 0 0 97.107.134.212:18000 72.23.130.104:42905 SYN_RECV I've been doing everything possible to find a solution and have yet to figure out the problem, so any help/suggestions are much appreciated. UPDATE 1: I've set tcp_syncookies = 0 and noticed I am now replying with 1 SYN+ACK for every 50 SYN requests. The host trying to connect is sending a SYN request about once every second. PCAP FILE

  • Windows Explorer slow response when disconnect from the network

    - by ITGuy24
As a Systems Admin I have seen this issue repeatedly and it drives me crazy. Basically the problem occurs when you open My Documents or My Computer (Windows Explorer) there is a big delay ranging from 5-25 seconds before it actually opens and shows the content. Sometimes the problem continues with each subfolder you open. The problem is most common when disconnected from the network and when you have mapped drives. The most common solution for this problem is to disconnect any mapped drives or printers that are discconected/not reaachable. I have also heard that turning off "Automatically search for network folders and printers" can solve this issue but I have yet to see this work. Does anyone know of any other work arounds for this?

  • Write Fedora.iso to USB and boot it from a Macbook

    - by MTilsted
I have an .iso image of the full Fedora 16 install (Downloaded from http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options#formats as "Fedora 16 DVD") and the question now is: How do I write it on a USB stick, so I can install it on my Mac book? I tried using DD as the install guide said, and that gave me a USB stick which can boot from my PC. But it can't boot from the Mac (The Mac start menu don't show it as a boot option). Edit: I downloaded a live install image, and did this (SSD is my USB 4GB thing) /sbin/mkdosfs -F 32 -n usbdisk /dev/dev/sdd1 sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --efi /tmp/download/Fedora-16-i686-Live-KDE.iso /dev/sdd1 And this produced an image which can boot on my pc but not on my mac. This seems to indicate that the --efi is not working, because if it really was EFI it would not boot on a normal pc, would it? I then tried this: (Difference being that I write the image directory to /dev/sdd instead of /dev/sdd1) but this still will not boot on the Mac (it newer shows up at the startup screen on the Mac). sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --efi /tmp/download/Fedora- PS: My host Linux is Fedora 13.

  • No response from example.com using Apache

    - by stevens-G
I am unable to access example.com or by local IP after restarting the server. I checked to make sure httpd service was on. I looked at the error_log in /var/log/httpd and found nothing. Tried to restart httpd again and it says 'Ok'. I'm not sure where else to check. I did move DocumentRoot from /var/www to /web-root and it worked before restarting the server. I tried pointing it back to /var/www and still not able to view the page. IPtables have not changed. Any suggestions?

  • Poor write performance on Debian server running NFS with 22TB exported JFS filesystem

    - by user143546
I am currently running a debian server that is exporting a large JFS filesystem (22TB) over NFS (nfs-kernel-server.) When attempting to write to the NFS share, the performance is very poor. The 22TB disk is sitting on a NAS mounted using iSCSI. It will bust for a moment near expected line speed, and then sit idle for several seconds. Very little traffic measured in the low kb/sec. The wait peeks on write. When reading from the NFS mount, the system operates at expected speeds (11MB/sec). The issue does not occur when using SFTP, rsync, or local coping (non-nfs). The issue persists between stable and testing releases. On the same machine I have a 14TB ext4 filesystem using the exact same export configuration that does not share the issue. This share is not in regular use and thus not consuming resources. NFS Server: cat /etc/exports /data2 10.1.20.86(rw,no_subtree_check,async,all_squash) cat /sys/block/sdb/queue/scheduler noop [deadline] cfq cat /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server RPCNFSDCOUNT=8 RPCNFSDPRIORITY=0 RPCMOUNTDOPTS=--manage-gids NEED_SVCGSSD= RPCSVCGSSDOPTS= NFS Client: cat /etc/fstab 10.1.20.100:/data2 /root/incoming nfs rw,noatime, soft, intr, noacl 0 2 cat /sys/block/sdb/queue/scheduler noop [deadline] cfq cat /proc/mounts 10.1.20.100:/data2/ /root/incoming nfs4 rw,noatime,vers=4,rsize=262144,wsize=262144,namlen=255,soft,proto=tcp,port=0,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=10.1.20.86,minorversion=0,addr=10.1.20.100 0 0 This problem has me pretty stumped. After a while, when using the computer it gets very slow, and even closing down windows can take several minutes. I started to look in the resource monitor and though I found the answer watching my hdd. The thing is that the hdd completes all tests in Seagate's SeaTools for Windows successfully. Which makes me doubt on the problem and weather I can send it in to get an replacement. Suggestions on what it could be and what I can do about it? Here a screenshoot from the resource monitor:

CloudServers::AUTH_USA : CloudServers::AUTH_UK DOMAIN = "..." cs = CloudServers::Connection.new(:username => USERNAME, :api_key => API_KEY, :auth_url => AUTH_URL) cs.list_servers_detail.map {|server| server.map {|s| { s[:name] + "." + DC + DOMAIN => { :ip => s[:addresses][:private][0], :aliases => s[:name] }}} } end end And I have a hosts.pp that calls this and 'should' write it to /etc/hosts. class hosts::us { $hosts = get_hosts("us") hostentry { $hosts: } } define hostentry() { host{ $name: ip => $name[ip], host_aliases => $name[aliases] } } As you can imagine, this isn't currently working and I'm getting a 'Symbol as array index at /etc/puppet/manifests/hosts.pp:2' error. I imagine, once I've realised what I'm currently doing wrong there will be more errors to come. Is this a good idea? Can someone help me work out how to do this?

  • What does ldapsearch response mean?

    - by Martijn Burger
I created a ldap directory with a number of users and groups. When I query this directory from a remote server with: ldapsearch -H ldap://ldap.myserver.net/ -x -vvvvvvv -b dc=myserver,dc=net -D cn=admin,dc=myserver,dc=net -W I get all objects in the directory returned. The result finishes with the following: # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 85 # numEntries: 84 What do these numbers mean exactly?

  • Completely hiding nginx server response header

    - by hustlerinc
I'm having trouble hiding my server header (nginx 1.2.1). I've google'd it and it seems all I have to do is to set server_tokens off; in nginx.conf. But doing this only removed the version number, but it still shows nginx as the server. I've seen there's a module called HttpHeadersMoreModule but I don't need all those fancy options. All I want is to hide the header. How can I manually hide the header completely?
