• VirtualBox 4.1.20 (Windows 7 / Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit)) copy/paste is broken

  I have a Windows 7 Pro host, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS guest. I cannot get the shared clipboard working. I have installed Guest Additions 4.1.20 on VirtualBox 4.1.20, have restarted, followed instructions found at http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp18411760, and have enabled bidirectional clipboard sharing within VirtualBox options. However, I still cannot copy and paste between the host and guest. Copy/paste works great within the host, and within the guest, but not between the two. I'm out of ideas.

  Suppose, I have created a new folder. By default, there is "no access" to every one. By default, to other "read only" to other users. and only owners have "read & write" access to folders. • afp/smb transfers caps at 2 megabytes/sec, wireless N

  I wanted to transfer files between two mac computers. The network is wireless-N and both computers have wireless-N modules in them. The problem is that when I transfer files between them, via file sharing (afp) the network speed caps at 2 megabytes/sec. Just downloading files from the internet I can get faster speeds, so this isn't a constriction of my wifi bandwidth, it appears to be a constriction of the protocol being used. My wifi-n is set to 130mbits, so I should see real world transfer speeds around 12-16 megabytes/sec I did this command on both computers sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0 which is supposed to lower tcp overhead, but this did not affect it. How can I get the speed I am expecting?

• How do I set up a shared internet on a network using computer hooked up to a router

  I got a wireless broadband modem (Huawei E1750) hooked up to my computer (call it A., running Windows-7) whose internet I wish to share to my other computer (call it B., also running Windows-7). A. is hooked up to my d-link DIR-600 router using a wired connection to port 1 on the router. B. is connected to the router using a wireless connection. Now I have tried setting up the sharing according to the help files for ICS but I have not been able to get it working. I suspect that there is something in my hardware configuration that is making it difficult. I would appreciate some tips and pointers as to what could be the reason to my problems.

• OSX: iTunes won't play .ogg files over shared library

  I have an OSX 10.5 box that is sharing its iTunes library and another 10.6 box connecting to that library through iTunes. It works as expected except for ogg files. Those ogg files are visible and selectable in the shared library but will not play through the share on the client machine. If I move the ogg files to the client machine they play locally just fine. They also play locally on the host machine. They just won't play through the iTunes share. Is this a bug or some other known issue? Is there a fix, short of converting all ogg files to mp3?

• Block access to certain websites from other computers on shared internet connection

  I have very little knowledge about networking. I have an internet connection on my PC (running Windows XP). I've enabled internet connection sharing to other computers on my network connected using a WIFI router. I want to block use of GMail (in general, specific domains) from other computers, but should be able to access them from my own machine. I can't edit my hosts file because my machine too would lose access. I guess I need to configure my wireless router for that. But I have no idea how to do so. My wireless router is a Zyxel P-660HW-T1 v2. I'd appreciate any pointers.

  Most people want to use their cellphone as a modem for their computer, commonly referred to as 'tethering'. I'm actually interested in doing the opposite: Sharing my landline internet connection(which is much faster than any 3G service) with by cellphone. My phone is a Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8330 and it has USB and bluetooth connections. I know both USB and Bluetooth are capable of supporting tcp/ip traffic what's not so clear is: Is IP over USB or Bluetooth standardized? Is it supported on my phone? Has my cellphone company crippled my phone to prevent me from using it?

• VMware ESXi 4 On-Disk Data Deduplication - possible and supported?

  Environment: We are running multiple web, database, and application servers which usually share a pretty common installation (gentoo linux) and similar configuration in VMware ESXi 4. The differences are usually only some installed features or differing component versions. To create a new server, I usually choose the most similar (by features) running server, rsync a copy of it into freshly mounted filesystems, run grub, reconfigure and reboot. Problem: Over time this duplicates many on-disk data blocks which probably sums up to several 10's of gigabytes. I suppose if I could use a base system as template with the actual machines based on top of that, only writing changed blocks to some sort of "diff image", performance should improve (increased cache hit rate) and storage efficiency should increase (deduplicated storage space). This would be similar to what ESXi already supports for RAM deduplication (page sharing). Question: Is there any way to easily do this on ESXi 4? I already share the portage tree via NFS but this would not work for the rootfs.

• Windows 2003 Server on a domain, XP client PCs on a workgroup - file share without authentication?

  I have a windows 2003 server on a domain and client PCs running XP on a workgroup. I have created a file share on the server that should be accessible by the client PCs. I even set the security and sharing to 'Everyone' just to test. When I try to access the file share from any of the XP machines, I get an authentication prompt that displays asking for credentials, even though 'Everyone' has full control currently (just for testing purposes). Why is it asking to authenticate? I need it to where it doesn't ask to authenticate. I also made sure passwords were set on all XP machines since I found this could be one possible issue and they all were. Any ideas? Thanks!

We're looking into software to facilitate this, but somewhow typing "large file hosting" into Google gives questionable results.. ;) We've come up with the following requirements, and I hope any of you can points us in the direction of a solution that offers this functionality, or is malleable to our needs. Synchronization / revision management is of no concern, it's mostly single large (up to 1+ GB) file uploads & downloads we'll need. We'd like to make the downloads expire & be removed after a certain number of days / downloads, to limit the amount of cleanup we'd have to do. The data files exchanged sometimes hold confidential information, so the URLs generated should be random and not publicly visible. Our users are of the less technically savvy variety, so a simple webform would be best over a desktop client (because we also have to support a mix of operating systems). As for use of the system we'd either like to send out generated random URLs for them to upload their files, or have an easy way manage & expire users. Works on a linux (Ubuntu) server (so nothing .Net-related please) Does anyone know of software that fits the above criteria? • IM and File Transfers Integrated With VoIP

  I have an Asterisk box serving an office of people. I'd like to provide instant messaging and file sharing capabilities alongside the voice and video capabilities provided by Asterisk (ala Windows Live Messenger, Skype etc). Asterisk does not seem to offer IM outside the context of a SIP call, nor am I aware that it provides file transferring capabilities whatsoever. The clients will be using Jitsi, so there are many protocols to choose from, but I'd like to provide as much integration as possible between the VoIP and IM/file transfer (ideally a single account that facilitates voice/video and IM/file transfer). Is this possible, and if not, what would be the most appropriate alternative? Thank you.

• Why does Windows share permissions change file permissions?

  When you create a (file system) share (on windows 2008R2) with access for specific users does it changes the access rights to the files to match the access rights to the share? We just killed our intranet web site when sharing the INetPub folder (to a few specified users). It removed the file access rights for authenticated users, i.e., the user could not log in using single signon (using IE & AD)! Could someone please tell me why it behaves like this? We now have to reapply the access right every time we change the users in the share killing the site in the process every time!

• No write access on Windows 2008 workgroup share

  Hi All, I'm trying to access network shares on my new Windows 2008 server (workgroup) using my server's local admin account. I can read files but not modify them. Permissions (sharing + file system) say: Users = Read only. Admins = Full Control. Even though I connect using my admin account (net use x: \\server\share /user:server\me), I can't write. OTOH, I have another share on the same computer where users have Read AND Write. I can write into that one. What's the problem? Does it have to do with UAC? TIA for your help.

  To simplify backing up a laptop (Windows Vista), I'm planning on sharing its C: drive (with password protection) and using that to back it up from another computer. What are the security implications of this? If I share C: with a reasonable password, how big is the risk of compromise if the system is e.g. inadvertently used on a public WLAN or similar? Background: I'm planning to use [Areca Backup][1] to back up two systems (Windows XP and Vista). My current plan is to install Areca on the XP box, and share the Vista system's C: as a shared folder, so the XP system can read it. Then I can set up the drive as a network drive and have Areca read it like a local drive. Of course, if you can think of a more elegant way of doing this, I'm open to suggestions.

• Anything to share a printer from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows?

  I've got a printer which only has 32-bit drivers, so it's installed on a 32-bit machine (XP). I need it to appear as a printer (with duplex control etc) on a 64-bit machine (Vista). I can't just share it using Windows printer sharing because the 64-bit client requires drivers to connect to it. There's no 64-bit driver for a similar printer that works (using the new port named \\server\printername). I've tried the ghostscript approach but that doesn't seem to help with the duplex control etc. Printeranywhere doesn't support 64-bit OS yet. Is there another way to do this?

• How can I share files from my Windows 7 machine to my friend's Ubuntu machine?

  I run a Windows 7 Pro SP1 laptop as my home machine, and my housemate runs an Ubuntu 12.04.1.05 desktop. We share a WLAN. I would like to make certain locations and files available for him to read and maybe write. How can I go about this? Bearing in mind I have very little recent experience with modern Linux, and Ubuntu in particular. My first idea is to share a Windows folder with my Ubuntu VM under VMWare Player, then his Ubuntu machine can connect to my Unbuntu VM, and the two can use whatever magic Ubuntu uses to achieve file sharing. This requires my Ubuntu VM to be always running though, and that may not always be possible. I have also heard that Samba may have a feature to help here, but I know nothing about that. How can I share my Windows files with my mate's Ubuntu machine, preferably with a 1 to 1 connection, i.e. rather not using shim VM's

  I have a MacBook Pro and I'm going to buy a Boxee Box. I have access to wireless internet, but it's slow and out of my control. So my question is, what is the best way for both devices to get internet access, and the Boxee Box to get SMB access to the Mac, when only the Mac is connected to the wireless internet? • Is it possible to use bittorrent for a fileserver

  I would like to set up a file server that is searchable, preferable via the web. I'm wondering if it would be possible to achieve this using the bittorrent protocol and have a single client sharing every single torrent on the server. I guess I could use some available tracker solution for the webinterface or write one myself. My concerns are the if there are any limits to the number of torrents a single client can share since this may potentially be 10k torrents. The number of downloading clients is very small, only myself and my relatives. The idea is to have a single place to host everything from vacation photos to musical creations. Is there any other options for this kind of file server. It should also be easy to upload files to the server.

  Need help according to scenario given: Client end PCs: 400 + Network : Server 1 (Linux) : 192.168.2.0/24 (For Application, Internet not working) GW: 192.168.2.1 Clients: 192.168.2.1 - 254 Server 2 (Linux) : 192.168.3.0/24 (For Internet users) GW: 192.168.3.1 Clients: 192.168.3.2 - 254 Server 2 is connected to DSL Broadband. Server 1 and Server 2 both are on same physical network i.e. Same switches. Current issue: i have to deploy a file and print server but this server will be accessed by both (192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x) one same workgroup. as both subnets are on same switched network. Limitations: Currently there is no hardware routers and firewall. Need to complete this task with Linux / Windows / AD. Tested / Worked so far: Configured one PC with two NIC's With the IPS: NIC 1 : 192.168.3.2 GW: 192.168.3.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 NIC 2 : 192.168.2.2 GW: Empty Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Kindly provide any solution what should i do to get sharing enable on both Subnets. • Share wired internet connection of windows 7 pc to iPad via bluetooth?

  At my work, we have wireless... but our desktops are wired. The wireless in the building is sparse and horrible and my iPad has an unstable wifi connection to it. However, I was wondering since my iPhone is capable of sharing internet to my iPad via bluetooth protocol, if my PC could somehow reproduce that same protocol and allow the iPad to do the same? I'd love it if my iPad had a stable connection via bluetooth when it's just sitting near my desktop. Please advise! Thanks!
