• Hiring developers - listing IDE as a requirement?

  I've been looking at some job postings and noticed that a fair amount of them list IDEs under the 'required skills' section, even for senior positions. This is not localized to one company either, but rather it's something that comes up once in every few postings. I am perplexed by this job requirement, as my mentors and some of the best coders I've seen in my life were VIM/Emacs ninjas. Similarly, when I work with people I don't much care what tools they use as long as they are productive on the team. Can someone please explain the rationale behind hiring managers making IDEs an official job requirement?

• Where must i focus [on hold]

  i have been working in technology field for last 7 years. i started with vb.net windows application along with oracle plsql. Later on i did projects that included coding in java ,struts framework ,javascripts. I have lost interest in doing projects with struts framework and doesn't find oracle plsql appealing too. I would love to work with new technologies especially mobile techs and my interests in coding persists still. But i am not sure if my organisation will ever shift its tech base to new and modern frameworks. Now i am 25 years old and worried about taking the right decision. i feel like quitting the job but at the same time i am concerned if i have the sufficient tech skills to start working on modern technologies in other organisations. Also i am confused if i must stick to the same company and wait for management jobs. Kindly suggest your opinions on the right strategy i must opt , being a 25 year old with this background.

• Where can I find crash course in Java eclipse in Vancouver?

  I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses? I find lot of CS courses just show tip of the iceberg and not too much focused on actual application. I want to learn the latest industry skills and etc. I live in BC, Canada. • What should I know before starting my first consulting project?

I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. We have already agreed on an hourly wage that I'm happy with, so that's not an issue. I'm just worried that since this is my first time working on my own, I'm going to make some mistakes that could be easily avoided if I had someone give me advice beforehand. • How to bridge the gap between university and job requirements

  I study physics and computer science and both studies include minor programming tasks whereas larger tasks are only (potentially) a part of larger projects like for your thesis. When I look at job postings for scientific jobs e.g. in the area of HPC they usually ask for "extensive programming skills in C/C++ and HPC" or the like. This is what I would like to achieve, but frankly I don't know how. I don't mean to mourn, but you can imagine that studying physics/CS means having a busy schedule so I couldn't even work part time as a research assistant to get practice without negative influence on my grades. The second problem is that I lack ideas on what to code in my spare time. I would like to do something useful but even for open source projects you apparently need a whole lot of time and depending on the type of software a lot of experience to be useful. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me.

• How to teach your users/customers to send better error descriptions

  I often have to deal with customers or users which are reporting errors in applications. Most of the time their content is something useless as ERROR!!! x does not work without much more information. For resolving the issue I have to request every single detail of them, which often is more time consuming than fixing the issue itself. Other send information in formats which are not ideal, like screenshots (of data records, not of errors) although they could send a link (we have access to the systems) and so on. How do you tell your users/customers to describe the problems with more details so that the whole process could be easier for both sides? edit This question is more about the social skills, than how to achieve programmatic collection of logs and error information. I'm aware of the fact that this should be part of good software design.

Rather than having load of categories like, for example, Builder, Electrician, Carpenter etc, we would like to have one word more general categories.   Hello I'm trying to make some kind of tool for an school website, what I need to do is to make students take a test and according to what are the results (27 posibilities) they get a set of activities (questions) according to their level which they can solve in around 3 months logging periodically to the website, plus I need teachers to log and look at the reports. Now, I'm a graphic designer myself so my skills are mostly html5 and css3 and I know some php (edit existing ones only) and javascript (jquery) as well, most people tell me that I need a CMS to do the tool but all I find is CMS for display like blogs or news websites which I think aren't useful for me because the website is already made in html and css3 only (I need to add an extra page for the tool) I understand I need to create users and give them special rights according to what type of user they are and I also understand that I need a database where I can store all my questions. What is the best way to do this? what do you suggest me? Thanks

I'm not starting from a goal and trying to design the system to achieve it, I'm doing the opposite: designing the system and trying to justify it with a meaningful goal. • mouse pad freezes

  I have an acer aspire running net book remix 11.10. the mouse pad freezes up completely and I must use an external mouse. if I reboot the computer the mouse pad will work again. i seem to have this problem happen in the middle of either using firefox or a few time while using thunderbird. anyone else having this problem. an external mouse works but scrolling is choppy or it scrolls part of the way down a page and then jumps to the top again. I don't recall having this problem after upgrading to 11.10 so I think it is related to an update. my Linux skills are limited.

  I want to write a game as my final year diploma project.(I'm a 4th-year-student now so I've got a year and several months). But I don't know what to choose: either write my own game engine using DirectX9(10)(I don't like OpenGL) or use OGRE + PhysX(Don't like Unity) I'm more interested in writing my own game engine(but I wonder if I'll create engine on the same level as even Unreal 1.0 hah) but on the other side with PhysX I'll have advanced physics in my game and with OGRE I'll have good grahics. For 3d models I want to use Maya. What do you advise me to choose? As for me I've got a little DirectX experience,not bad C++ programming skills(but not expert's) and a little knowledge of Maya. My English isn't perfect either hah...

  I am good at C programming and also I am good at embedded devices. I have setup an embedded circuit myself using the basic arduino and by interfacing some devices with it. But the main problem is that I do not know where and how to start programming this device with the known C programming skills. The device has an on chip boot loader. By "start programming", I mean how to bring the embedded device into my programming and stuff. I know program starts from a main() and an infinite loop makes the application run.   I know many programming languages ,skills and concepts in very basic, such as PHP, Java, Object-oriented technology. Using PHP, I can build a simple website with CRUD, login function. Using Java, I can make an basic swing csv/plain text editor in which user can switch between 2 different views. In term of object-oriented Technology, I clearly understand what encapsulation, inheritance and Polymorphism are I want to know more about programming.
