• Adding features to an SQL Server 2008 standard with SP1

  I have MS SQL Server 2008 with SP1 installed. I want to add the Full text feature to the installation. Do I need to run the SP1 update again after I add this feature? If I do try to run it (SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU) it fails with this error: "There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer". Should I uninstall SP1 and re-install? Doesnt make much sense.

• No keyboard input until after GRUB

  I have a computer that I dual boot between Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7. I installed Windows first, and Ubuntu second. When I boot, the GRUB menu comes up, showing me the option to select to boot to Ubuntu at the top of the list, and to boot to Windows at the bottom. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, any key I press on the keyboard (connected by USB) does not get any response, so I can't actually select to boot to anything but Ubuntu (which is the default selection). Once Ubuntu loads and I am at the log in screen, then the keyboard (and mouse) work perfectly normally thereafter. Why would my keyboard not work only during GRUB? And how do I fix it?

I have the following in the bash_profile: export DISPLAY=:0.0 export ORACLE_BASE=$HOME umask 022 # must match `sysctl kern.maxprocperuid` ulimit -Hu 512 ulimit -Su 512 # must match `sysctl kern.maxfilesperproc` ulimit -Hn 10240 ulimit -Sn 10240 Upon applying the bash_profile settings . ~/.bash_profile i get the following error: -bash: ulimit: max user processes: cannot be modify limit: Invalid argument This then results in $ sqlplus / as sysdba not functioning correctly with a Segmentation fault: 11 The output of $ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 10240 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 512 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited If any one knows how I can apply these ulimit settings to the oracle user I have created to allow me to install sqlplus and therefore create a db, that would be great.

• new SBS 2011 Standard problems

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

• SSH through standard Belkin router to Asus Tomato router

  I've set up SSH on the Tomato firmware on an Asus N10, via port 22 with key authentication. I've tested the keys by connecting with putty directly to the router when connected to its network. That works OK. But this router is behind a Belkin (F5D7632-4) router which also acts as modem and when I try to connect through with the (dynamic) public IP it times out. I'm guessing it's something to do with the NAT? My putty settings are taken from various online tutorials, but it's set up for port 22, with the correct key as mentioned. The Belkin router has port forwarding to the Asus (192.168.2.3) for port 22 TCP and UDP set up. It's now tough to see what to do in order to connect to the Asus router with an external IP - if it's even possible. Ideally I would have liked to have only needed to use the Asus router, but as it doesn't act as a modem, I need to connect it to the Belkin to use Tomato's features. • Migrating SBS 2003 to 2012 standard

  My company is currently trying to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. We know the general procedure, but we want to make sure we aren't going to mess anything up tremendously. Here's the steps we were planning on taking: 1. Uninstall exchange 2. Remove legacy GPO's 3. Demote the domain controller 4. Promote the new server to the primary domain controller. We have no mail servers to worry about. My question is, will the above method work or will we need to make a complete new domain? Thanks!

• Xorg input devices fail without udev

  What I am trying to do: Launch Xorg server without udev device manager. What I have tried to do: Make sure that /dev/ has all required nodes, such as /dev/input/*. Make sure that all required kernel modules are loaded. Launch Xorg. What happens: Xorg starts up as excepted. Xorg loads correct GPU driver and sets right screen resolution. Xorg blocks all input devices (keyboard, mouse), Alt+F[1-12] does not work (can't go back to tty1). Unraw'ing keyboard to take its control from X removes blocking and after unraw I can Alt+F1 back to tty1. Xorg still does not handle any input. Why I think that it should work: Same configuration works well if udev is loaded. Loading udev does not add or modify /dev/ contents, all nodes stays same. My main question is: How to make Xorg input devices work without udev? Any additional information about how Xorg really uses/detects/grabs keyboard would be helpful. And any additional information about what udev really does (other than populating /dev/) would also be helpful.

• Excel - graphing mean and standard deviation

  Hi all, I have measurements for multiple devices, and have their mean and sd values. I would like to produce a chart that would show these values, and I think the best would be if I could have something that looks like a bar chart(-ish) - the device names in x axis, values in y axis, and for each device to have a 'floating' bar that would represent values (mean - sd :: mean + sd), and some marker in the middle to show the actual mean value. is it doable? or would you suggest some other chart? • Algorithm for optimal control on space ship using accelerometer input data

  Does someone have a good algorithm for controlling a space ship in a vertical shooter game using acceleration data? I have done a simple algorithm, but works very badly. I save an initial acceleration value (used to calibrate the movement according to the user's initial position) and I do subtract it from the current acceleration so I get a "calibrated" value. The problem is that basing the movement solely on relative acceleration has an effect of loss of sensitivity: certain movements are independent from the initial position. Would anyone be able to share a a better solution? I am wondering if I should use/integrate also inputs from gyroscope hardware. I used to use Asterlink for routing calls, but they folded and sent my number to OneBox, but they're ridiculously expensive by comparison. I'm looking for a cheap solution for this one simple task. Forward toll free calls to a skype-in number. The definition of cheap is as cheap or cheaper than Asterlink was. I paid something like $2 a month, and then the termination/call rate, which was a fraction of a sent for termination, and only whole cents after some serious time on the call. A $20 preload lasted me months at a time. I don't want to be upsold too, I want a simple web based management screen (CDR/stats are fun!), and obviously, it needs to be reliable. What vendors out there are you a fan of that solves this need?

• Which programming language suits a system that must work without user input

  I'm building a prototype of a device that will function much alike a digital photoframe. It will display images retrieved from the internet. The device must start up and run the photoframe. It will have no user interface. The device has a minimal ubuntu installation, but I could install Xorg or whatever needed. Question: I have trouble figuring out which programming language will be suitable. I've just started using Python to try out several things and I am able to download and display images. I guess that means Python can do what I'd like, but is it suitable as a language that will be run on boot without any user interference? Related questions: - How do I set up Linux to start that script automatically? - How to setup a second Python script as a server that runs in the background to retrieve images before they are displayed (Because I think I'll need threading of some sort?)

  My 3D application works with user-imported 3D models. Frequently, those models have a few vertices facing into the wrong direction. (For example, there is a 3D roof and a few triangles of that roof are facing inside the building). I want to repair those automatically. We can make several assumptions about these 3D models: they are completely closed without holes, and the camera is always on the outside. My idea: Shoot 500 rays from every triangle outwards into all directions. From the back side of the triangle, all rays will hit another part of the model. From the front side, at least one ray will hit nothing. Is there a better algorithm? Are there any papers about something like this?

  I'm attempting to understand how "switch as a code smell" applies when the proper code path is determined by some observable piece of data. My Webapp object sets an internal "host" object based on the hostname of the current request. Each Host subclass corresponds to one possible hostname and application configuration: WwwHost, ApiHost, etc. What is an OOP way for a host subclass to accept responsibility for a specific hostname, and for Webapp to get an instance of the appropriate subclass? Currently, the hostname check and Host instantiation exists within the Webapp object. I could move the test into a static method within the Host subclasses, but I would still need to explicitly list those subclasses in Webapp unless I restructure further. It seems like any solution will require new subclasses to be added to some centralized list.

  I'm creating an application that sits in the background and records all key presses (currently this is done and working; an event is fired every keydown/keyup). I want to offer a feature for the user that will show them their WPM over the entire session the program has been running for. This would be easy if I added a "Start" and "End" button to activate a timer, but I need to detect only when the user is typing continuously - ignoring all one-time keyboard shortcuts and breaks the user takes from typing. How in the world do I approach this? Is this even realistically & accurately possible?

  How can I allow access to the foo.html files in the .com/song/private/ subfolder for: a logged-in Wordpress user; or any referral domains (including subfolders) I add; or any URL on our own domain from the com/song/private folder; For all others, the user should be redirected to the corresponding public version of the Post, which is the same html filename and structured .com/song/foo.html. (The private versions uses a different template with different custom fields for each Post.) • Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 CD 1 cannot boot: freeze at No Emulation

  Hi everyone. I've been interested in the Windows Server line of OSes, so since I apply for DreamSpark, I thought I'd go download it and try it. I just so happened to have an old desktop that I was using awhile ago for Windows XP, so I imaged the drive in preparation for it to be overwritten with the new OS. (This system has an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, and 1GB of RAM.) I tried burning the first disk image on my newer desktop computer, running Windows XP, although the CD burner consistently failed at a particular track area from cd to cd, so it seemed like the burner was toast there. Fortunately, I had a laptop, so I transferred the images over to that, then burned the first disc there. First time around went great, and the burning program reported no errors. I then took the CD over to the computer that I was intending to install Server onto, set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive, then I booted it up. Like normal, after the POST, it printed "Boot from ATAPI CD-Rom: No Emulation", which I was used to seeing with bootable cds. I waited for the "Press any key to continue..." message that I had become so familiar with in windows discs, although I saw none. The computer sat there for about 5 seconds with the cd spinning, then it spun down like it was done reading it. Nothing else happened. No response from the keyboard. I tried again, same result. I then downloaded IMGBurn, and I put the burned cd into the laptop that burned it originally. I also downloaded a fresh image from the dreamspark site. I ran a verify session, and everything checked out. I later tried getting various DOS startup discs, then I tried booting the winnt binary, which supposedly initiates the installation process. Either the shells reported that not enough memory was available (since they would be running in low memory mode), or FreeDOS in particular would report Illegal instructions right away. Is the image corrupt at dreamspark, or am I doing something wrong?
