• How to restructure ASP.NET application

  Hi, I have a sample ASP.NET application. The appliaction was developed as POC and not following any design and architectural standards. Now I want to restructure the application. I can see some of the business logic and controls can be reused in future, such as login control. I have two options for restructuring I create a Utility DLL that will contain all such resusable code and another DLL that will contain all controls that can be reused. I will create a separeate DLL for each type which can be reused e.g. Login control. Which option is more better. Although I feel option 1 is good, but I need suggestion from experts.

• Writing my first blackberry app

  I am contemplating writing my first blackberry app. I am fundamentally, a C/C++ programmer (not Java), can anyone provide some guidelines on the quickest route (i.e. shallowest learning curve) to writing a blackberry app? Any resources/links would be useful. As an aside: In an ideal world, I would like to write once and deploy for both Blackberry and the iPhone, but since I am targetting largely business people, I guess blackberry should be my target - right? Is it possible to write once and deploy on BOTH iphone and BB?

• Where are good examples of Web applications built for skilled and intense use?

  I have spent most of my development career writing backend code, or front-end apps for used as daily business tools, by at least semi-skilled staff, e.g. order-tracking, sales capture, etc. That those I helped build peformed their tasks well is comfort enough, but I am still seeking excellence in the building of these kind of apps, versus the more trendy emphasis on slow and sensual interpersonal relationships with the UI. Can anyone recommend reading on this type of application (LOB?) on the web today? Any available examples to study?

• Dealbreakers for new programming jobs?

  What might be said or implied at an interview or job posting that should set off alarm bells for a coder? I'm still only a few years in the industry but I already know to look out for excessive red tape and bureaucracy. Cubes and a noisy office also tell me that I'll be both miserable and unproductive and that management does not appreciate what coders need to work well. Edit: The way things are going I'm taking extra time to look at the company's stability. If they depend on a single vendor for their livelihood and could be out of business if the vendor decides they don't really need the service or can do it in-house. What are your dealbreakers?

  I'm starting on my first business project (.NET) and am trying to follow DDD principles. Are there any guidelines or common patterns for orgaining source code and namespaces? For example, do your domain objects go in a namespace MyProject.Domain or whatever? Would you separate the concrete implementations and the interfaces? In different namespaces? Different folders? Different solutions? I know a lot of this is subjective and dependent on project size, but a few pointers or suggestions to get started on a relatively small but extensible n-tier project would be useful.

  This is slightly embarrassing. I'm a professional developer working at one of the big tech companies and I've never used a database. I've got an idea for a website I want to build as a learning experience and possibly as a business, but I don't have the faintest idea what database to use, let alone how to fix/debug the database when I run into problems. I'm looking for a course, a website, a book, etc., that will give me an overview of modern database technology (SQL vs. NOSQL vs. relational vs. non-relational (I only have a vague idea what these even mean)). I'm starting by googling/wikipediaing all of these terms, but if there are better, comprehensive resources available that I should be aware of, I'd love to hear about them.

• In which document do file specifications belong?

  In which document would a file specification belong? Perhaps this file is used as an input to a third-party system. Would it belong in its own document? Or would it be better to put it in the functional or design spec? Or somewhere else? When I say file specification, I mean a description of what format the file is (CSV, fixed width, etc), columns, data types, etc. Also, where should you document how the file is generated? i.e. business rules/algorithms which are used to generate the file.

• How do I delete an object from an Entity Framework model without first loading it?

  I am quite sure I've seen the answer to this question somewhere, but as I couldn't find it with a couple of searches on SO or google, I ask it again anyway... In Entity Framework, the only way to delete a data object seems to be MyEntityModel ent = new MyEntityModel(); ent.DeleteObject(theObjectToDelete); ent.SaveChanges(); However, this approach requires the object to be loaded to, in this case, the Controller first, just to delete it. Is there a way to delete a business object referencing only for instance its ID? If there is a smarter way using Linq or Lambda expressions, that is fine too. The main objective, though, is to avoid loading data just to delete it.

• Do AOP violate layered architecture for enterprise apps?

  The question(as stated in the title) comes to me as recently i was looking at Spring MVC 3.1 with annotation support and also considering DDD for an upcoming project. In the new Spring any POJO with its business methods can be annotated to act as controller, all the concerns that i would have addressed within a Controller class can be expressed exclusively through the annotations. So, technically i can take any class and wire it to act as controller , the java code is free from any controller specific code, hence the java code could deal with things like checking security , starting txn etc. So will such a class belong to Presentation or Application layer ?? Taking that argument even further , we can pull out things like security, txn mgmt and express them through annotations , thus the java code is now that of the domain object. Will that mean we have fused together the 2 layers? Please clarify

• Embed form in another website - pitfalls

  Scenario: We provide a hosted site that clients pay to use internally (a tool to support their business workflow). We have a requirement to provide a form that the clients can 'embed' in their outward facing site. This form will permit a member of the public to enter some details to register an interest - this data will be pushed to our remote system. Question: I'm currently planning on creating a simple HTML page that the client's web guys can include in a simple fashion on their site (either using an iframe or an object tag). If I do this, am I going to run into difficulties when the user tries to submit the embedded form (as it will be going to different domain to the one they are currently browsing)? I had a look at google adsense and I see that they just provide a link to a JS file that renders their ads - I'm not sure I see the advantage in this, but if anybody has any bright ideas... Whatever technique that gets used, I'll have to authenticate the request as coming from my client's site(s).

Both of these things seemed pretty ubiquitous across the corporate software world, however I recently visited a few companies that use PHP/Ruby and nearly all their devs had facial piercings/visible tattoos, etc. and their offices had no apparent dress code. This might sound funny, but it made me wonder, is there any correlation between specific technology and office culture?   Hi, We are planning to develop a client server application using C# and MySQL. We plan to sell the product on the shelf like any other software utility. We are worried about the decompilation of our product which does have some sort of edge over our competitors in terms of usability and bundled functionality. How can we prevent our software from decompilation, so the business logic of the product remains intact? We have heard about Reflector and other decompilers which makes our code very much vulnerable for copying. Our customer base is not Corporates by medical practitioners who themselves may not do it but our competitors may want to copy/disable licensing so value of our software goes down.   I am trying to insert a row in a table using simple INSERT Query in a transaction. It works fine in SQL Server but I am not able to insert the data using my business object. I am calling a SELECT query using the Command as: Using cm As New SqlCommand With cm .Connection = tr.Connection .Transaction = tr .CommandType = CommandType.Text .CommandText = Some Select Query .ExecuteScalar() '' Do something .CommandText = Insert Query .ExecuteNonQuery() End With End Using I am getting the Timeout period expired error at ".ExecuteNonQuery()" line. Any other DML query is running perfectly fine at this point. Can anyone tell me the reason?

  I'm currently trying to write a stored procedure that can compute the biweekly periods when a date is passed in as a parameter. The business logic: the first Monday of the year is first day of the biweekly period. For example in 2010: period period_start period_end 1 2010-01-04 2010-01-17 2 2010-01-18 2010-01-31 3 2010-02-01 2010-02-14 .... 26 2010-12-20 2011-01-02 Passing today's date of 2010-12-31 will return 26, 2010-12-20 and 2011-01-02. I've searched for opensource projects to look and the only thing I had found was django-cashflow. This app uses python-money.   More specifically I'm looking for something, perhaps an add-on for firefox, once enabled it logs all of this information as it's passed to and from the server. I'm doing some web scripting and this would be really handy. If anyone is wondering specifically what I'm doing currently I'm trying to make a script to repost my craigslist ad every 2 days since I handle a few things on there. Might even go so far as to make a simple gui to manage the submissions. I do suspect this goes against the ToS, for that reason I don't plan to release the code. Besides cl is already bad enough with spam, I'm not trying to contribute further to it, figured I'd say what I'm doing for the sake of being honest though. I don't have any bad intentions with this, just some things I've been trying to sell an ad for my pc repair business. I've been reposting some things for months now and so often I just forget to do it.

• looking for RTF template system with simple DSL

  Is there any framework that fills up rtf document with data? The idea is to make business people/testers change the document in MsWord and than generate reports from that. The problem is with tables, Id need to create some special DSL for handling tables and showing hidding text/page parts. Id rather not do that and use some existing solution. I tried to search for something, but I only found frameworks that can produce rtf output from xml input and i want to use rtf as input and output.

  Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

I am trying to add a Silverlight control to my Existing ASP.NET project where i used to add reference to my Business Logic Project and access methods from My UI pages of ASP.NET Web application. Now I have added one Silverlight project to my solution. How can I use the already existing BL method which is in a C# class library ? When tried to add reference, it is saying that "You can only add project reference to other silver light projects in the solution". Should i give up ? Is there any way to get rid of this ?

• Cannot step into .NET framework source with VS2008 SP1.

  Somehow my VS2008 SP1 has lost the ability to step into .NET framework sources. I've played around with checkboxes to no end; I've re-deleted the Symbol cache folder a dozen times; and I've tried all kinds of debug symbol servers. All it does is download some .PDB files, but when I try to select a stack frame in .NET, I always get the message about no source available and "do you want to view disassembly". What gives? Added: Web application; Windows Vista Business x32; .NET 3.5 SP1.

I want to use air technology in enterprise business,and I think widget manager(engine) like google desktop,vista sidebar is a good system entrypoint.so I look for a widget manager basing AIR,the widget manager can load air widget, and auto upgrade widget silently ,and have a cool user-interface like google desktop or vista sidebar or yahoo's.
