• How can I debug an application crash in Win7 after it's happened?

  I have a Visual Basic 6 application that I've recently changed to use a couple of C++ DLLs I've written in Visual Studio 2008. The application works fine on my PC, but when we install it on one of our test PCs it tends to crash during shutdown - we see the Win 7 message "Your application has failed" or whatever it is. I know Win 7 stores data that can be used to analyse the crash. I've got the source code and .PDB files from the build so I should be able to use that, but I can't figure out where Win 7 stores the data from the crash. The Event Viewer shows the crash but doesn't have any data and the directory C:\Windows\Minidump doesn't exist. Where do the crash files get put?

• Working with iPhone OS 3.2 only classes

  How would you write a universal app that uses classes introduced in iPhone OS 3.2, such as UIPopoverController and UISplitViewController? On Jeff LaMarche's blog about this, Ole provides a method for instantiating these objects; you would instantiate a UIPopoverController like so: [NSClassFromString(@"UIPopoverController") alloc]. This is fine for instantiating these classes in code but what about protocols and their methods? My iPad app uses a UISplitViewController and has a class that needs to conform to the UISplitViewControllerDelegate and UIPopoverControllerDelegate. How would you declare this? And how would you work with a method such as the following? - (void)splitViewController:(UISplitViewController *)svc willHideViewController:(UIViewController *)aViewController withBarButtonItem:(UIBarButtonItem *)barButtonItem forPopoverController:(UIPopoverController *)pc where the method call requires UISplitViewController to be passed in?

• Script to Copy User according to UID

  I'm looking for a way to copy all non-system users from one PC to another. I can get the group and passwd files copied over using this awk -F":" ' $3 > 499 ' etc/passwd >> /etc/passwd awk -F":" ' $3 > 499 ' etc/group >> /etc/group But, how would I go about getting the shadow file copied over since it does not store the UID? Assume that there are over 1000 users, so doing a grep with the usernames, such as egrep '(bob|bill|sarah|sal):' etc/shadow >> /etc/shadow generating the usernames from the awk code above, would be a bit inefficient, but a possible option.

• Generating custom-form documents from base-form plus XML?

  Hi all, this is my first stack overflow, and it's a complex one. Sorry. My task is to generate custom documents from a basic template plus some XML without having a custom form design element for each case. Here's the whole picture: We are building a Lotus Notes (client, not web) application for world-wide application access control; the scope is something like 400.000 users being able to request access to any of 1000+ applications. Each application needs its own request form -- different number of approvers, various info required, that sort of thing. We simply can't have a thousand forms in a database (one per application), and anyway their maintenance really needs to be pushed from the developers to the application owners. So instead of custom forms, we'd like to create a generic "template" form that stores a block of basic fields, but then allows application owners to define another block of fields dynamically -- "I want a mandatory plain-text field named 'Name' here, and then a date field named 'Due' here that must be later than today's date, and then ...". I hope this makes sense (if not, think of it as a generic questionnaire application). I pretty much have the structure in place for designing the dynamic fields (form builder GUI - XML-encoded data - pre-rendered DXL for injecting into a form), including mark-up for field types, value options, and rudimentary field validation instructions. My problem is generating a document with this dynamic content injected at the proper location (without needing a custom form design element for each case). Doing the dynamic content via HTML is out. The Notes client web rendering is simply way too poor, and it would be quite a challenge to implement things like field validation instructions, date selectors, and name look-ups. DXL, on the other hand, would allow us to use native Notes fields and code. As a tech demo, I've managed to implement a custom form generator that injects the pre-rendered DXL for the dynamic content into a base form; but as I said, we don't want a ton of custom form design elements. I've tried to implement a way to create a document with the "store form in document" flag set, but once I've created the document from the base form, I can't get DXL access to the stored form design, and so I can't inject my dynamic content. I know this is not something Notes was ever intended to do. Has anyone ever tried something like it (and gotten away with it)? Thanks for reading this far. • Automatic setting of Local Time zone w/DST

  I can derive latitude and longitude and UTC time from GPS NMEA sentences. Now, how can I automaticly adjust the Windows local time zone on my PC (2003 Server OS), based on this? Also, Is there an easy way of distributing this to clients based on code or apps software? Preferred programming environment is .NET, C# & Visual Studio. I use a GPS Time server (GPS clock with antenna) today, but this could not support other than UTC. I want to set computers in my TCP/UDP network to correct time zone w/DST based on coordinates derived from GPS, so manually setting of all is not required.

• Is java.util.Scanner that slow?

  Hi guys, In a Android application I want to use Scanner class to read a list of floats from a text file (it's a list of vertex coordinates for OpenGL). Exact code is: Scanner in = new Scanner(new BufferedInputStream(getAssets().open("vertexes.off"))); final float[] vertexes = new float[nrVertexes]; for(int i=0;i<nrVertexFloats;i++){ vertexes[i] = in.nextFloat(); } It seems however that this is incredibly slow (it took 30 minutes to read 10,000 floats!) - as tested on the 2.1 emulator. What's going on? I don't remember Scanner to be that slow when I used it on the PC (truth be told I never read more than 100 values before). Or is it something else, like reading from an asset input stream? Thanks for the help!

• Web app - Biometric system connection

  Hi, I will be developing an application for a club where they will have visitors use biometric systems(finger print) or magnetic cards to mark their attendance. This application is planned as a web app, made using PHP/MySQL/Javascript. It does a lot of other things as well. What I wanted to find out is how is the interface between Biometric/Megnetic Card systems to a web app done? I've never worked on this and am hoping if someone who has experience with this can throw some light on this as to how this could be accomplished. Any pointers will be appreciated. (I'm afraid there's got to be some form of application installed on a pc that would interface with the hardware and probably makes calls to the web app. But, if there was a way to connect it to the web app directly, then the app would be easy to deploy to any location with minimal installation.) I'm a pro at memory management in pc but somehow I'm having crazy problems here in arduino. For instance: The arduino have 8192B, I'm trying to overflow it with uint_16 so I made an array of 8192/16 which is 512. so I did uint16_t A[512+1]; Well I expected that to cause an overflow. • Is it possible to use Integrated Windows Auth when Server isn't on the domain?

  Our production web servers ARE NOT part of the domain, but we'd like people to be able to log in automatically since they are logged into the domain on their PC. Is there anyway to get the browser (IE7+) to send the appropriate information to the server (IIS6) so I can retrieve the ServerVariables["AUTH_USER"] or ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"]? I presume the answer is no since if I set the security for windows auth to "on" and anonymous access to "off", then the server wouldn't know what do do with any user information for a domain which it has no knowledge of. I just want to know for sure before I give the SSO team a "not possible" answer.

  I have a Windows2k3/IIS6 server but at home i'm using Windows7/IIS7 pc. I just installed VS2010 and trying out the new Web form. After i setup a application in IIS7, I set the Application Pool to ASP.net v4.0 Classic thinking this is the correct setting to simulate IIS6 but when I browse to the website. I got HTTP Error 404.2 Not found but if i set the application pool settings to ASP.net v4.0 then everything run fine. Does anyone know how to simulate IIS6 with ASP.net 4 on Windows7/IIS7/ASP.net 4?

The data.frame has round about 850.000 rows. • Portable and Secure Document Repository

  I'm trying to find a document manager/repository (WinXP) that can be used from a USB disk. I would like a tool that will allow you to add all documents into a single repository (or a secure file system). Ideally you would login to this portable application to add or retrieve a document and document shouldn't be accessible outside of the application. I have found an application called Benubird Pro (app is portable) that allows you to add files to a single repository, but downsides are that it is not secure and the repository is always stored on the PC and not on the USB disk. Are you able to recommend any other applications? Thanks

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? I haven't set up a send port, so that I can see what BizTalk is trying to process. I can see only the body part, the additional part doesn't show up. I was wondering what version of Windows 7 to get pre-installed, given that I want to do some ASP.NET development using Visual Studio. Specifically : Will all versions of Windows 7 run an IIS server & be suitable for ASP.NET development ? Are all good for running SQL Server etc ? Will Windows 7 have any probs running old versions of Visual Studio (Ie. 2003 & 2005 versions). Are there any other things I need to consider ? I'm probably going for the 32 bit version of Windows 7. It appears that a Reduce must have both a GROUP ON and a SELECT in order to work as expected so the following are not valid: INVALID REDUCE CLAUSE 1: Reduce = results => from result in results group on new ViewA { Id = result.Id, Name = result.Name, CurrencyName = result.CurrencyName } into g select g.Key; This produces: System.InvalidOperationException: Variable initializer select must have a lambda expression with an object create expression Clearly we need to have the 'select new'. INVALID REDUCE CLAUSE 2: Reduce = results => from result in results select new ViewA { Id = result.Id, Name = result.Name, CurrencyName = result.CurrencyName }; This prduces: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'ICSharpCode.NRefactory.Ast.IdentifierExpression' to type 'ICSharpCode.NRefactory.Ast.InvocationExpression'. Clearly, we also need to have the 'group on new'. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. (Note: removing the type (ViewA) from the constructor calls has no effect on the above)

• Is it practical to learn and use Forth?

  When I was still a young developer, I started to focus on the many available programming languages. But in 1980 to 1990 there weren't many freely available compilers. So I started with several BASIC dialects for home computers, Pascal and C on my PC, I did an exam in COBOL and dabbled a bit in Assembly and a few other languages. And at one point I took a short look at Forth. That's over 20 years ago and I've learned a lot ever since. I know that Forth is still used these days. It's still a good programming language but since I focus mostly on Windows development, I just wonder if knowing Forth could be helpful for future projects of mine. So, would it be practical for an experienced developer to learn more about Forth?

  Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

• Windows 7 Public Documents Folder - how to move it to drive d: [closed]

  Hi, I've just bought a new pc, and it is running Windows 7. I'm wanting to set up all of the documents folders such that they point to folders on a second drive partition (ie. disk D:) so that I have a nice separation of os from docs. I have managed to do this for each user on the machine (by opening up properties for documents folder and changing location). Hwoever, this procedure doesn't seem to work for the public documents folder. I cannot change the location for that one (even though I have administrator privileges). It is greyed out and cannot be changed. Any ideas ? Thanks!!
