  • devlog & community engagement: where to start?

    - by Lai Yu-Hsuan
I heard one of the ways to promote games is to start a development log, but I haven't gotten it to this day. Where should I start? Though I have had a blog, this idea seems a infinite loop: Writing blog to promote game, then I have to promote my blog and nothing becomes easier. So, where do you post devlog? Or you post other interesting things in some communities? Are there some examples that I can learn from?

  • Gigantic 2d maps?

    - by Jesper Hallenberg
I've been thinking about a game idea for a week or two and the last few hours I was thinking of some technical stuff and came up with that the map would need to be 360,000x360,000 pixels in size. To me it sounds insane, but I've never done much in depth game development so I'm not sure if its reasonable or not to have a map that large. Basicly my question is, would it work to have a map that large in a 2D game?

  • What technologies and tools would I need to create an advanced 3D game on Unreal Engine 3?

    - by BleakCabalist
This is a purely hypothetical question. Let's say I already have the UE3 license and would like to create an advanced single-player FPS. What other tools/technologies would I need? For example for audio, animations, modeling and so on. I mean all of them. I've been looking for some time now and can't find any source, which would say what's needed from beggining to the end of game development cycle.

  • What are atan and atan2 used for in games?

    - by kyrogue
I am having some trouble understanding Math.tan() and Math.atan() and Math.atan2(). I have basic knowledge of trigonmetry but the usage of SIN, COS, and TAN etc for game development is very new to me. I am reading on some tutorials and I see that by using tangent we can get the angle in which one object needs to be rotated by how much to face another object for example my mouse. So why do we still need to use atan or atan2?

  • Best practices in managing character states

    - by TheBroodian
While in development of a character, I feel like I'm digging myself deeper into a hole every time I add more functionality to him, creating more bugs and it seems like my code is tripping over itself all over the place. What are the best practices when managing character states for a character that has a large selection of abilities and actions that they can perform, without their abilities interrupting each other and creating a mess overall?

  • How to add energy ball which disappears when touched by player in UDK?

    - by OliveOne
I am new to UDK and learning game development. I want to know about how to add a ball to the game world with the following effects/actions: Glowing effect Physics-like object (just having gravity) Particles when touched by player-avatar Disappears in 1-2 seconds after touch Score updates based on different colors of ball I know little about this can be done by kismet, cascade and content creation, but do not know where to start. Please tell me the steps for this. I am trying this weekend in depth.

  • “Apparently, you signed a software services agreement without fully understanding it.”

    - by Dave Ballantyne
I am not a lawyer. Let me say that again, I am not a lawyer. Todays Dilbert has prompted me to post about my recent experience with SqlServer licensing. I'm in the technical realm and rarely have much to do with purchasing and licensing.  I say “I need” , budget realities will state weather I actually get.  However, I do keep my ear to the ground and due to my community involvement, I know, or at least have an understanding of, some licensing restrictions. Due to a misunderstanding, Microsoft Licensing stated that we needed licenses for our standby servers.  I knew that that was not the case,  and a quick tweet confirmed this. So after composing an email stating exactly what the machines in question were used for ie Log shipped to and used in a disaster recover scenario only,  and posting several Technet articles to back this up, we saved 2 enterprise edition licences, a not inconsiderable cost. However during this discussion, I was made aware of another ‘legalese’ document that could completely override the referenced articles, and anything I knew, or thought i knew, about SqlServer licensing. Personally, I had no knowledge of this.  The “Purchase Use Rights” agreement would appear to be the volume licensing equivalent of the “End User License Agreement” , click throughs we all know and ignore.  Here is a direct quote from Microsoft licensing, when asked for clarification. “Thanks for your email. Just to give some background on the Product Use Rights (PUR), licenses acquired through volume licensing are bound by the most recent PUR at the time of license acquisition. The link for the current PUR and PUR archive is http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/product-licensing.aspx. Further to this, products acquired through boxed product or pre-installed on hardware (OEM) are bound by the End User License Agreement (EULA). The PUR will explain limitations, license requirements and rulings on areas like multiplexing, virtualization, processor licensing, etc. When an article will appear on a Microsoft site or blog describing the licensing of a product, it will be using the PUR as a base. Due to the writing style or language used by the person writing areas of the website or technical blogs, the PUR is what you should use as a rule and not any of the other media. The PUR is updated quarterly and will reference every product available at that time working on the latest version unless otherwise stated. The crux of this is that the PUR is written after extensive discussions between the different branches of Microsoft (legal, technical, etc) and the wording is then approved. This is not always the case for some pages explaining licensing as they are merely intended to advise and not subject to the intense scrutiny as the PUR.” So, exactly what does that mean ? My take :  This is a living document, “updated quarterly” , though presumably this could be done on a whim and a fancy.  It could state , you are only licensed if ,that during install you stand in a corner juggling and that photographic evidence is required. A plainly ridiculous demand but,  what else could it override or new requirements could it state that change your existing understanding of the product or your legal usage of it. As i say, im not a lawyer, but are you checking the PURA prior to purchase ?

  • Looking for an alternative to GameSalad

    - by Mr_Nizzle
I have learned the most I could from GameSaldad in a week but now I'm facing one big problem I didn't see at the beginning: You cannot make API/WebServices call from GameSalad. So I am looking for alternatives on 2D game development, iOS or cross-platform, like GameSalad where you can actually make API calls, or web services call to keep track of the game and so on. Or should I go down to Cocos2D, CHIPMUNK?

  • How can teams collaborate on Unity 3D projects?

    - by nosferat
With a friend of mine, we are planning to develop a small game to get the hang of game development and teamwork. But since Unity 3D barely supports version control (or at least the free version lacks of it) we have no idea how to efficiently manage teamwork. Sharing tasks in a small project is also seems like a challange for us. I would also appreciate any advice that could be useful for beginner indie developers related to teamwork. :)

  • Managed game frameworks with Model loading support [on hold]

    - by codymanix
Iam looking for an alternative to XNA with support of model loading. Does anybody know when/if there if a MonoGame release is planned which includes its own content pipeline which works without XNA beeing installed? If not, what are the alternatives in managed game development? As far as I know, SlimDX and SharpDX on its own brings no functionality for loading models. Are there any open source libraries that can do that?

  • Where is the time spent?

    - by 280Z28
Game development is a large process. In your experience, how are the total hours for releasing a game divided over the following major areas. I believe this is useful because few people (none?) are really good at all the areas, so this helps me balance the cost of items I'm not so good at when estimating the complexity of creating a game. Modeling and raw asset creation (textures, audio) Level design Gameplay design Programming Testing Marketing

  • Rotating Sprite around Y-Axis (2D)

    - by Bruce Collie
I'm going to be creating a game soon, and part of it involves spinning sprites. The sprites will be spinning around the Y-Axis (imagine a spinning plate on top of a stick, where the stick stands up vertically. The main way I've thought of is to have a series of sprites for various rotation values that I blur between as the 'plate' rotates (the sprite is more complex than a plate, though). The game will be for iPhone, but I'm open to using any 2D gave development library for it.

  • The new direction of the gaming industry

    - by raccoon_tim
Just recently I read a great blog post by David Darling, the founder of Codemasters: http://www.develop-online.net/blog/347/Jurassic-consoles-could-become-extinct. In the blog post he talks about how traditional retail games are experiencing a downfall thanks to the increasing popularity of digital distribution. I personally think of retail games as being relics of the past. It does not really make much sense to still keep distributing boxed games when the same game can be elegantly downloaded and updated over the air through a digital distribution channel. The world is not all rainbows, however. One big issue with mixing digital distribution with boxed retail games is that resellers will not condone you selling your game for 10€ digitally while their selling the same game for 70€. The only way to get around this issue is to move to full digital distribution. This has the added benefit of minimizing piracy as the game can be tightly bound to the service you downloaded the game from. Many players are, however, complaining about not being able to play the games offline. Having games tightly bound to the internet is a problem when games are bought from a retailer as we tend to expect that once we have the product we can use it anywhere because we physically own it. The truth is that we don’t actually own the product. Instead, the typical EULA actually states that we only have a license to use the product. We’re not, for instance, allowed to disassemble the product, which the owner is indeed permitted to do. Digital distribution allows us to provide games as services, instead of selling them as standalone products. This means that for a service to work you have to be connected to the internet but you still have the same rights to use the product. It’s really straightforward; if you downloaded a client from the internet you are expected to have an internet connection so you’re able to connect to the server. A game distributed digitally that is built using a client-server architecture has the added benefit of allowing you to play anywhere as long as you have the client installed and you are able to log in with your user information. Your save games can be backed up and your game can continue anywhere. Another development we’re seeing in the gaming industry is the increasing popularity of free-to-play games. These are games that let you play for free but allow you to boost your gaming experience with real world money. The nature of these games is that players are constantly rewarded with new content and the game can evolve according to their way of playing and their wishes can be incorporated into the product. Free-to-play games can quickly gain a large player basis and monetization is done by providing players valuable things to buy making their gaming experience more fun. I am personally very excited about free-to-play games as it’s possible to start building the game together with your players and there is no need to work on the game for 5 years from start to finish and only then see if it’s actually something the players like. This is a typical problem with big movie-like retail games and recent news about Radical Entertainment practically closing its doors paints a clear picture of what can happen when the risk does not pay off: http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/25874/Prototype-Developer-Radical-Entertainment-Closes/.

  • Where can I find free simple 3D models? [duplicate]

    - by fibo-Nacci
This question is an exact duplicate of: What are good sites that provide free media resources for hobby game development? [closed] I'm learning OpenGL. Unfortunately can't create 3D models, but I would like to write some really simple games, to improve my programming skills. I need some really basic .obj file, which has one bmp, or jpeg texture. Where can I download some for free? Thanks in advance,

  • Override close button

    - by mmimaa
How can I override the close button near minimize/maximize in such a way that the application doesn't automatically close. I want it to show an exit screen or something like this, so I would like to be able to delay the close and display something on the screen when I press the red close button. At first I thought that I should override the OnExiting() method, but I couldn't get it working. This is my first attempt at creating a fully functional game, so I have no previous experience in game development nor with XNA.

  • Should the main game object be static in c++

    - by Som_kun
I am creating a 2d platformer using SDL and I was thinking that my game object could be static, but I wasn't sure if this was a good idea. The pros (that I can see): Accessing settings options (such as screen size and keyboard bindings) would be easier accessed There should only ever be one main game loop, so this makes sure for me. The cons: From what I've heard, static classes in C++ are a bear to work with I've read that this may cause problems later in development (things don't work right or can't be used properly

  • Richfaces: rich:datatable rowspan using rich:subtable

    - by Markos Fragkakis
Hi, I use Richfaces, Seam and JSF, and I want something like the following: and I have managed it to a degree using a rich:subtable like this: <rich:dataTable value="#{backingBean.companyList}" rows="100" var="company"> <f:facet name="header"> <rich:columnGroup> <rich:column>Company Name</rich:column> <rich:column>Company Email</rich:column> <rich:column>Product Name</rich:column> <rich:column>Product Email</rich:column> </rich:columnGroup> </f:facet> <rich:subTable value="#{company.products}" var="product" rowKeyVar="rowKey"> <rich:column rowspan="#{company.products.size()}" rendered="#{rowKey eq 0}"> #{company.name} </rich:column> <rich:column rowspan="#{company.products.size()}" rendered="#{rowKey eq 0}"> #{company.email} </rich:column> <rich:column> #{product.name} </rich:column> <rich:column> #{product.email} </rich:column> </rich:subTable> the problem is that companies that have NO products, do not get rendered at all. What I want would be for them to be rendered, and the remaining row (the product-specific columns) to be empty. Is there a way to do this? Note: I have also tried nested rich:datatables, but the internal columns do not overlap with the outer columns containing the header. With rich:subtable the inner columns overlap with the outer columns and show nice.

In the end my problem is adding the "tempProduct" object to the mutable array dataArray so that I can customize the table cells. Using the json framework im parsing out some json which returns an array of NSDictionary objects. Stepping through that my dictionary objects look good, I populate my custom object with properties for all my fields which goes through fine, and the values look right. However I cant add this to the array, I've tried several different implementations doesn't work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. In some instances doing a po tempProduct prints the description and sometimes it does not. same with right clicking on the variable and choosing print description. • Database structure - is mySQL the right choice?

    - by Industrial
Hi everyone, We are currently planning the database structure of a quite complex e-commerce web app that has flexibility as it's main cornerstone. Our app features a large amount of data (products) and we have run into a slight headache trying to keep performance high without compromizing normalization rules in the database, or leaving our highly beloved flexibility concept behind when integrating product options (also widely known as product attributes or parameters). Based on various references and sources available, we have made up lists on pros and cons of all major and well known database patterns to solve this. After comparing these, we have come up with two final alternatives: EAV (Entity-attribute-value model) : Pros: Database is used for all sorting. Cons: All related queries will include a number of joins between multiple tables in order to complete the collection of data. SLOB (Serialized LOB, also known as Facade?) : Pros: Very flexible. Keeping the number of necessary joins low compared to a EAV design pattern. Easy to update/add/remove data from each product. Cons: All sorting will be done by the application instead of the database. Will use lots of performance (memory?) when big datasets is processed by a large number of users. Our main questions: Which pattern/structure would you use, or maybe even a different solution? Is there better databases besides mySQL available nowadays to accomplish what we want? Thanks a lot! • T-SQL Right Joins to ALL Entries inc Selected Column

    - by Pace
Hi Experts, I have the following Query which produces the output below; SELECT TBLUSERS.USERID, TBLUSERS.ADusername, TBLACCESSLEVELS.ACCESSLEVELID, TBLACCESSLEVELS.AccessLevelName FROM TBLACCESSLEVELS INNER JOIN TBLACCESSRIGHTS ON TBLACCESSLEVELS.ACCESSLEVELID = TBLACCESSRIGHTS.ACCESSLEVELID INNER JOIN TBLUSERS ON TBLACCESSRIGHTS.USERID = TBLUSERS.USERID The output is this; 29 administrator 1 AllUsers 29 administrator 2 JobQueue 29 administrator 3 Telephone Directory Admin 29 administrator 4 Jobqueueadmin 29 administrator 5 UserAdmin 29 administrator 6 Product System 27 alan 1 AllUsers 97 andy 1 AllUsers 26 barry 1 AllUsers 26 barry 2 JobQueue 26 barry 3 Telephone Directory Admin 26 barry 4 Jobqueueadmin 26 barry 5 UserAdmin 26 barry 6 Product System 26 barry 7 Newseditor 26 barry 8 GreetingBoard What I would like to do is modify the query so I get all Access Levels regardless of weather there is an entry for that user. What I would also like to do is some sort of exist case so that I get output like the following; 29 administrator 1 AllUsers True 29 administrator 2 JobQueue True 29 administrator 3 Telephone Directory Admin True 29 administrator 4 Jobqueueadmin True 29 administrator 5 UserAdmin True 29 administrator 6 Product System True 29 administrator 7 Newseditor False 29 administrator 8 GreetingBoard False 27 alan 1 AllUsers True 27 alan 2 JobQueue False 27 alan 3 Telephone Directory Admin False 27 alan 4 Jobqueueadmin False 27 alan 5 UserAdmin False 27 alan 6 Product System False 27 alan 7 Newseditor False 27 alan 8 GreetingBoard False 97 andy 1 AllUsers True 97 andy 2 JobQueue False 97 andy 3 Telephone Directory Admin False 97 andy 4 Jobqueueadmin False 97 andy 5 UserAdmin False 97 andy 6 Product System False 97 andy 7 Newseditor False 97 andy 8 GreetingBoard False 26 Barry 1 AllUsers True 26 Barry 2 JobQueue True 26 Barry 3 Telephone Directory Admin True 26 Barry 4 Jobqueueadmin True 26 Barry 5 UserAdmin True 26 Barry 6 Product System True 26 Barry 7 Newseditor True 26 Barry 8 GreetingBoard True ......................................... So the rules are ALWAYS show ALL Entries for ACCESSLEVELS and where EXISTS in ACCESSRIGHTS produce a true / false to show this. I hope this makes sense and hopefully you dont need the table definitions as everything I need to work with is in the original Query. I just need a way of manipulating it slightly and getting the join in the right place. Thank you. Pace

  • [WPF Datagrid] Binding to a List<>

    - by Tr?n Qu?c Bình
I have a datagrid like this: <dg:DataGrid Name="dg" AutoGenerateColumns="False" CanUserDeleteRows="True"> <dg:DataGrid.Columns> <dg:DataGridTextColumn Header="Product Code" x:Name="columnProductCode" Binding="{Binding Path=Product.ProductCode}" IsReadOnly="True" ></dg:DataGridTextColumn> <dg:DataGridTextColumn Header="Product Name" x:Name="columnProductName" Binding="{Binding Path=Product.Name}" IsReadOnly="True" ></dg:DataGridTextColumn> <dg:DataGridTextColumn Header="ProductMeasure" x:Name="columnDonViTinh" Binding="{Binding Path=Product.Measure IsReadOnly="True"></dg:DataGridTextColumn> <dg:DataGridTextColumn Header="Quantity" x:Name="ColumnQuantity" Binding="{Binding Path=Quantity IsReadOnly="False"></dg:DataGridTextColumn> </dg:DataGrid.Columns> </dg:DataGrid> In the behind code, I have a struct like this: private struct ProductDetail { public TProduct Product { get; set ; } // TProduct is a class provied by a web service public int Quantity { get; set; } } and a List like this: private IList<ProductDetail> bs = new List<ProductDetail>(); I had tried to fill data to "bs". And binding like this: this.dg.ItemsSource = this.bs; Everything is ok. I can insert a new row, delete row, but when I try to modified the column Quantity then click on the header of the datagrid (to resort) -- the Quantity column change to it is before. How can I fix this problem. Thanks advanced.

  • Dynamic where clause using Linq to SQL in a join query in a MVC application

    - by jhoefnagels
    Dear .Net Linq experts, I am looking for a way to query for products in a catalog using filters on properties which have been assigned to the product based on the category to which the product belongs. So I have the following entities involved: Products -Id -CategoryId Categories [Id] Properties [Id, CategoryId] PropertyValues [Id, PropertyId] ProductProperties [ProductId, PropertyValueId] When I ad a product to the catalog, multiple ProductProperties will be added based on the category and I would like to be able to filter all products from a category by selecting values for one or more properties. I will gather all filters, which I will hold in a list, by reading the URL. Now it is time to actually get the products based on multiple properties and I have been trying to find the right strategy but untill now it does not really work. Is there a way to make this work without writing SQL? I was trying something like this: productsInCategory = ProductRepository.Where(p => p.Category.Name == category); foreach (PropertyFilter pf in filterList) { productsInCategory = (from product in productsInCategory join pp in ProductPropertyRepository on product.Id equals pp.ProductId where pp.PropertyValueId == pf.ValueId select product); }

  • General Drools Question

    - by El Guapo
For the last few months my company has been using a product from a company called Informatica (previously AgentLogic) called RulePoint. This product has proven itself very easy to use with a well-developed and easy-to-use SDK for customization. The way we use the product for CEP is fairly trivial, we have 2 sources which we monitor for our rule data, the first being a JMS Queue, the second being a Jabber IM account. The product runs on any java-based application server (WebLogic, Tomcat, etc) and runs just about flawlessly. Last week my boss says, "Hey, I've heard that we may be able to do the same thing we are doing with RulePoint with an open-source product called Drools. Check it out and let me know what you think." I've heard of people using Drools for flow-based operations (validation, etc), however, I've never heard of anyone using their CEP product (Fusion) in practice. So, being the diligent worker, I have undertaken this task. I've downloaded all the files (version 5.0) and accompanying documentation and have started to read. I've read through just about all the docs and run most of the examples, but I still don't really see HOW drools works for CEP. While there are examples for using Data (or Facts, I guess) from JMS, I don't see how this thing stays "running", continuously monitoring a queue until the application is actually stopped. RulePoint pretty must just sits and listens, however, Drools seems to not. I could probably write a full-blown command-line application for our needs, however, I was hoping to leverage some of the benefits of using a application server provides. I guess I'm looking for some good tutorials or an example of how someone is using Drools and CEP in production. Thanks in advanced for any information, advice you may be able to provide.

  • Rails 3.2 Ajax Update Div when Text Field Populated

    - by ctilley79
    In the end I would like a text field that passes a client_id to the partial. I would like to do this asynchronously so the shipment_products partial would dynamically change when the textfield value was updated. What is the best way to do this? In index.html.erb <!-- Text Field Here--> <div id="available_products"> <%= render "shipment_products" %> </div> In _shipment_products.html.erb <div id="shipment_products_container"> <h3>Assign Products to Ship<\h3> <ul class="shipment_products" id="shipment_products"> <% Product.by_client(client_id).each do |product|%> <!-- TextField value passed here --> <%= content_tag_for :li, product, :value => product.id do %> <%= hidden_field_tag("shipment[product_ids][]", product.id) %> <%= product.product_name %> <% end %> <% end %> <\ul> </div> This is similar to what I want in the end.
