  • Java: Local Enums

    - by bruno conde
    Today, I found myself coding something like this ... public class LocalEnums { public LocalEnums() { } public void foo() { enum LocalEnum { A,B,C }; // .... // class LocalClass { } } } and I was kind of surprised when the compiler reported an error on the local enum: The member enum LocalEnum cannot be local Why can't enums be declared local like classes? I found this very useful in certain situations. In the case I was working, the rest of the code didn't need to know anything about the enum. Is there any structural/design conflict that explains why this is not possible or could this be a future feature of Java?

  • Problem implementing Blinn–Phong shading model

    - by Joe Hopfgartner
    I did this very simple, perfectly working, implementation of Phong Relflection Model (There is no ambience implemented yet, but that doesn't bother me for now). The functions should be self explaining. /** * Implements the classic Phong illumination Model using a reflected light * vector. */ public class PhongIllumination implements IlluminationModel { @RGBParam(r = 0, g = 0, b = 0) public Vec3 ambient; @RGBParam(r = 1, g = 1, b = 1) public Vec3 diffuse; @RGBParam(r = 1, g = 1, b = 1) public Vec3 specular; @FloatParam(value = 20, min = 1, max = 200.0f) public float shininess; /* * Calculate the intensity of light reflected to the viewer . * * @param P = The surface position expressed in world coordinates. * * @param V = Normalized viewing vector from surface to eye in world * coordinates. * * @param N = Normalized normal vector at surface point in world * coordinates. * * @param surfaceColor = surfaceColor Color of the surface at the current * position. * * @param lights = The active light sources in the scene. * * @return Reflected light intensity I. */ public Vec3 shade(Vec3 P, Vec3 V, Vec3 N, Vec3 surfaceColor, Light lights[]) { Vec3 surfaceColordiffused = Vec3.mul(surfaceColor, diffuse); Vec3 totalintensity = new Vec3(0, 0, 0); for (int i = 0; i < lights.length; i++) { Vec3 L = lights[i].calcDirection(P); N = N.normalize(); V = V.normalize(); Vec3 R = Vec3.reflect(L, N); // reflection vector float diffuseLight = Vec3.dot(N, L); float specularLight = Vec3.dot(V, R); if (diffuseLight > 0) { totalintensity = Vec3.add(Vec3.mul(Vec3.mul( surfaceColordiffused, lights[i].calcIntensity(P)), diffuseLight), totalintensity); if (specularLight > 0) { Vec3 Il = lights[i].calcIntensity(P); Vec3 Ilincident = Vec3.mul(Il, Math.max(0.0f, Vec3 .dot(N, L))); Vec3 intensity = Vec3.mul(Vec3.mul(specular, Ilincident), (float) Math.pow(specularLight, shininess)); totalintensity = Vec3.add(totalintensity, intensity); } } } return totalintensity; } } Now i need to adapt it to become a Blinn-Phong illumination model I used the formulas from hearn and baker, followed pseudocodes and tried to implement it multiple times according to wikipedia articles in several languages but it never worked. I just get no specular reflections or they are so weak and/or are at the wrong place and/or have the wrong color. From the numerous wrong implementations I post some little code that already seems to be wrong. So I calculate my Half Way vector and my new specular light like so: Vec3 H = Vec3.mul(Vec3.add(L.normalize(), V), Vec3.add(L.normalize(), V).length()); float specularLight = Vec3.dot(H, N); With theese little changes it should already work (maby not with correct intensity but basically it should be correct). But the result is wrong. Here are two images. Left how it should render correctly and right how it renders. If i lower the shininess factor you can see a little specular light at the top right: Altough I understand the concept of Phong illumination and also the simplified more performant adaptaion of blinn phong I am trying around for days and just cant get it to work. Any help is appriciated. Edit: I was made aware of an error by this answer, that i am mutiplying by |L+V| instead of dividing by it when calculating H. I changed to deviding doing so: Vec3 H = Vec3.mul(Vec3.add(L.normalize(), V), 1/Vec3.add(L.normalize(), V).length()); Unfortunately this doesnt change much. The results look like this: and if I rise the specular constant and lower the shininess You can see the effects more clearly in a smilar wrong way: However this division just the normalisation. I think I am missing one step. Because the formulas like this just dont make sense to me. If you look at this picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blinn-Phong_vectors.svg The projection of H to N is far less than V to R. And if you imagine changing the vector V in the picture the angle is the same when the viewing vector is "on the left side". and becomes more and more different when going to the right. I pesonally would multiply the whole projection by two to become something similiar (and the hole point is to avoid the calculation of R). Altough I didnt read anythinga bout that anywehre i am gonna try this out... Result: The intension of the specular light is far too much (white areas) and the position is still wrong. I think I am messing something else up because teh reflection are just at the wrong place. But what? Edit: Now I read on wikipedia in the notes that the angle of N/H is in fact approximalty half or V/R. To compensate that i should multiply my shineness exponent by 4 rather than my projection. If i do that I end up with this: Far to intense but still one thing. The projection is at the wrong place. Where could i mess up my vectors?

  • Flex: Why is line obscured by canvas' background

  • Reducing Code Repetition: Calling functions with slightly different signatures

    - by Brian
    Suppose I have two functions which look like this: public static void myFunction1(int a, int b, int c, string d) { //dostuff someoneelsesfunction(c,d); //dostuff2 } public static void myFunction2(int a, int b, int c, Stream d) { //dostuff someoneelsesfunction(c,d); //dostuff2 } What would be a good way to avoid repeated dostuff? Ideas I've thought of, but don't like: I could make d an object and cast at runtype based on type, but this strikes me as not being ideal; it removes a type check which was previously happening at compile time. I could also write a private helper class that takes an object and write both signatures as public functions. I could replace dostuff and dostuff2 with delegates or function calls or something.

  • Expand a class instance within a class instance in PropertryGrid

    - by Dmi
    In C#, I have a class set up like so: class Page { public class Element { private string test; public string Test { get { return test; } set { test = value; } } } private Element element; public Element PrimaryElement { get { return element; } set { element = value; } } } If I have a PropertyGrid where the select object is an instance of Page, how can I modify Test in its member PrimaryElement from the PropertyGrid? It shows up in grey and is not expandable nor editable.

  • Help understanding some OpenGL stuff

    - by shinjuo
    I am working with some code to create a triangle that moves with arrow keys. I want to create a second object that moves independently. This is where I am having trouble, I have created the second actor, but cannot get it to move. There is too much code to post it all so I will just post a little and see if anyone can help at all. ogl_test.cpp #include "platform.h" #include "srt/scheduler.h" #include "model.h" #include "controller.h" #include "model_module.h" #include "graphics_module.h" class blob : public actor { public: blob(float x, float y) : actor(math::vector2f(x, y)) { } void render() { transform(); glBegin(GL_TRIANGLES); glVertex3f(0.25f, 0.0f, -5.0f); glVertex3f(-.5f, 0.25f, -5.0f); glVertex3f(-.5f, -0.25f, -5.0f); glEnd(); end_transform(); } void update(controller& c, float dt) { if (c.left_key) { rho += pi / 9.0f * dt; c.left_key = false; } if (c.right_key) { rho -= pi / 9.0f * dt; c.right_key = false; } if (c.up_key) { v += .1f * dt; c.up_key = false; } if (c.down_key) { v -= .1f * dt; if (v < 0.0) { v = 0.0; } c.down_key = false; } actor::update(c, dt); } }; class enemyOne : public actor { public: enemyOne(float x, float y) : actor(math::vector2f(x, y)) { } void render() { transform(); glBegin(GL_TRIANGLES); glVertex3f(0.25f, 0.0f, -5.0f); glVertex3f(-.5f, 0.25f, -5.0f); glVertex3f(-.5f, -0.25f, -5.0f); glEnd(); end_transform(); } void update(controller& c, float dt) { if (c.left_key) { rho += pi / 9.0f * dt; c.left_key = false; } if (c.right_key) { rho -= pi / 9.0f * dt; c.right_key = false; } if (c.up_key) { v += .1f * dt; c.up_key = false; } if (c.down_key) { v -= .1f * dt; if (v < 0.0) { v = 0.0; } c.down_key = false; } actor::update(c, dt); } }; int APIENTRY WinMain( HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, char* lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow ) { model m; controller control(m); srt::scheduler scheduler(33); srt::frame* model_frame = new srt::frame(scheduler.timer(), 0, 1, 2); srt::frame* render_frame = new srt::frame(scheduler.timer(), 1, 1, 2); model_frame->add(new model_module(m, control)); render_frame->add(new graphics_module(m)); scheduler.add(model_frame); scheduler.add(render_frame); blob* prime = new blob(0.0f, 0.0f); m.add(prime); m.set_prime(prime); enemyOne* primeTwo = new enemyOne(2.0f, 0.0f); m.add(primeTwo); m.set_prime(primeTwo); scheduler.start(); control.start(); return 0; } model.h #include <vector> #include "vec.h" const double pi = 3.14159265358979323; class controller; using math::vector2f; class actor { public: vector2f P; float theta; float v; float rho; actor(const vector2f& init_location) : P(init_location), rho(0.0), v(0.0), theta(0.0) { } virtual void render() = 0; virtual void update(controller&, float dt) { float v1 = v; float theta1 = theta + rho * dt; vector2f P1 = P + v1 * vector2f(cos(theta1), sin(theta1)); if (P1.x < -4.5f || P1.x > 4.5f) { P1.x = -P1.x; } if (P1.y < -4.5f || P1.y > 4.5f) { P1.y = -P1.y; } v = v1; theta = theta1; P = P1; } protected: void transform() { glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(P.x, P.y, 0.0f); glRotatef(theta * 180.0f / pi, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f); //Rotate about the z-axis } void end_transform() { glPopMatrix(); } }; class model { private: typedef std::vector<actor*> actor_vector; actor_vector actors; public: actor* _prime; model() { } void add(actor* a) { actors.push_back(a); } void set_prime(actor* a) { _prime = a; } void update(controller& control, float dt) { for (actor_vector::iterator i = actors.begin(); i != actors.end(); ++i) { (*i)->update(control, dt); } } void render() { for (actor_vector::iterator i = actors.begin(); i != actors.end(); ++i) { (*i)->render(); } } };

  • Java assert nasty side-effect - compiler bug?

    - by Alex
    This public class test { public static void main(String[] args) { Object o = null; assert o != null; if(o != null) System.out.println("o != null"); } } prints out "o != null"; both 1.5_22 and 1.6_18. Compiler bug? Commenting out the assert fixes it. The byte code appears to jump directly to the print statement when assertions are disabled: public static main(String[]) : void L0 LINENUMBER 5 L0 ACONST_NULL ASTORE 1 L1 LINENUMBER 6 L1 GETSTATIC test.$assertionsDisabled : boolean IFNE L2 ALOAD 1: o IFNONNULL L2 NEW AssertionError DUP INVOKESPECIAL AssertionError.<init>() : void ATHROW L2 LINENUMBER 8 L2 GETSTATIC System.out : PrintStream LDC "o != null" INVOKEVIRTUAL PrintStream.println(String) : void L3 LINENUMBER 9 L3 RETURN L4

  • SQL Server: Are temp tables or unions better?

    - by Jonathan Allen
    Generally speaking, for combining a lot of data is it better to use a temp table/temp variable as a staging area or should I just stick to "UNION ALL"? Assumptions: No further processing is needed, the results are sent directly to the client. The client waits for the complete recordset, so streaming results isn't necessary.

  • Possible to load an Enum based on a string name?

    - by Cooter
    OK, I don't think the title says it right... but here goes: I have a class with about 40 Enums in it. i.e: Class Hoohoo { public enum aaa : short { a = 0, b = 3 } public enum bbb : short { a = 0, b = 3 } public enum ccc : short { a = 0, b = 3 } } Now say I have a Dictionary of strings and values, and each string is the name of above mentioned enums: Dictionary<string,short>{"aaa":0,"bbb":3,"ccc":0} I need to change "aaa" into HooBoo.aaa to look up 0. Can't seem to find a way to do this since the enum is static. Otherwise I'll have to write a method for each enum to tie the string to it. I can do that but thats mucho code to write. Thanks, Cooter

  • Java Polymorphism - Selecting correct method based on subtype

    - by Marty Pitt
    Hi Given the following Class and Service layer signatures: public class PersonActionRequest { PersonVO person // ... other fields } public class MyServiceLayerClass { public void requestAction(PersonActionRequest request) { PersonVO abstractPerson = request.getPerson(); // call appropriate executeAction method based on subclass of PersonVO } private void executeAction(PersonVO person) {} private void executeAction(EmployeeVO employee) {} private void executeAction(ManagerVO manager) {} private void executeAction(UnicornWranglerVO unicornWrangler) {} } As discussed here, java will select the best method based on type info at compile time. (Ie., it will always select executeAction(PersonVO person) ). What's the most appropriate way to select the correct method? The internet tells me that using instanceof gets me slapped. However, I don't see the appropraite way to select the method without explictly casting abstractPerson to one of the other concrete types. Thanks Marty

Why doesn't the constructor of class B have access to A::y?

    Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to put GWT application on vkontakte.ru (for the note, it's the most popular social networking site for the russian-speaking audience, 75+ mln subscribers). I know that integration with Facebook is possible, but as long as vkontakte.ru is not a direct Facebook-clone (they use different engines), I'm not sure, the same integration scenario will work for vkontakte. Thanks in advance!

  • GetDC() DllImport for x64 apps

    - by devdept
    If you make a little research on the internet you'll see many DLLImport styles for this user32.dll function: HDC GetDC(HWND hWnd); The question is: what type is more appropriate for .NET x64 apps (either compiled with the Platform target as AnyCPU on a x64 machine or specifically as x64)? IntPtr for example grows to a size of 8 on a x64 process, can this be a problem? Is uint more appropriate than Uint64? What is the size of the pointers this function uses when used in a x64 process? The DLL is called user32.dll does it work as 32bit or 64bit on a x64 operating system? [DllImport("user32.dll",EntryPoint="GetDC")] public static extern IntPtr GetDC(IntPtr hWnd); public static extern uint GetDC(uint hWnd); public static extern int GetDC(int hWnd); Thanks!

    Say we've got a class like public class Doer { public int Timeout {get;set;} public string DoIt(string input) { string toReturn; // Do something that involves a Timeout return toReturn; } } Is there a tool that would create a Form or Control for prototyping this class? The GUI might have a NumericUpDown control with a label of "Timeout" and a GroupBox with a TextBox for "input" and a button labeled "DoIt" with an eventhandler that calls Doer.DoIt with the Text property of the input TextBox and puts the response in another TextBox.

  • Constructor in a Interface?

    - by Sebi
    I know its not possible to define a constructor in a interface. But im wondering why, because i think i could be very useful. So you could be sure that some fields in a class are defined for every implementaiton of this interface. For example consider the following message class: public class MyMessage { public MyMessage(String receiver) { this.receiver = receiver; } private String receiver; public void send() { //some implementation for sending the mssage to the receiver } } If a define a Interface for this class so that i can have more classes which implement the message interface, i can only define the send method and not the constructor. So how can i assure that every implementation of this class really has an receiver setted? If i use a method like setReceiver(String receiver) i can't be sure that this method is really called. In the constructor i could assure it.
