• Why learning new things is not important on a job hunt? [closed]

  I have just finished my job hunt. I think it was about 40 job interviews, I like to travel and get to know many companies. One thing I did not like is that they don't care about new technologies. I think only 2 persons asked me about new stuff in Java world. Most of them care if I know Java (certification and many years of experiance is not enough for them, they need to test me) For example in IBM they only cared what IBM products do I know. Have I ever used any custom extensions of WebSphere? I don't understand those questions. If I learn new frameworks every day then I can learn whatever technology they have very fast. So why it matters if I have ever used those "great" custom extensions of WebSphere? After those 40 interviews I have no reason to learn any new framework, because I see that they don't care. Why those "developers" don't ask questions about new technologies? are they so long at those comapnies that they don't care about new stuff?

• Ruby workflow in Windows

  I've done some searching and quite haven't come across the answer I am looking for. I do not think this is a duplicate of this question. I believe Windows could be a suitable development environment based on the mix of answers in that question. I have been developing in Ruby (mostly Rails but not entirely) for about a year now for personal projects on a Macbook Pro however that machine has faced an untimely death and has been replaced with a nice Windows 7 machine. Ruby development felt almost natural on the Mac after doing some research and setting up the typical stack. My environment then included the standard (Linux like) stuff built into OSX, Text Wrangler, Git, RVM, et al. Not too much of a deviation from what the 'devotees' tend to assume. Now I am setting up my new Windows box for continuing that development. What would my development environment look like? Should I just cave and run Linux in a VM? Ideally I would develop in Windows native. I am aware of the Windows Ruby installer. It seems decent but its not exactly as nice as RVM in the osx/linux world. Mercurial/Git are available so I would assume they play into the stack. Does one develop entirely in Windows? Does one run a webserver in a Linux VM and use it as a test bed while developing in Windows? Do it all in a VM? What does the standard Windows Ruby developer environment look like and what is the workflow? What would a typical step through be for adding a new feature to an ongoing project and what would the technology stack look like?

Microsoft internet explorer [fool] because this is IDE and we have only one that can be problem if they work not well. the service pack 1 always changes your installation for visual studio Express edition [tool such as VWD or VCS express] if you already have them  i means service pack 1 then share your experience with us! if not that don’t look on Microsoft website blogs because they never tell you pros and cons of their software.

• Transmission dependencies are not in repository

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 using Gnome3 through their ppa in launchpad. Went good until now. Today Ubuntu wanted to make some updates and I thought okay. But it didn't want to install all of them. Turned out there were not all dependencies in the ppa. Before I noticed that, I (noob :D) uninstalled (apt-get purge) Transmission in order to reinstall it. Bad Idea, because now I can't install it, even using synaptics. The problem: It seems like the only ppas that have transmission in it are the one from gnome3 team (not all packages included according to synaptics, v2.71) and the official (transmission-common missing, v2.61). So when I try to install a package it says that transmission-common is too new. I can't even find the version that should be somewhere in the official standard Ubuntu ppa. Installing from the Software center doesn't work either. Why aren't all dependencies in the ppas or why can't I see them? How can I install Transmission (stable, newest version) again? And why has the gnome3 team a newer version as the stable ppa of transmission? Are they including beta software? If you need any additional information just tell me. Sorry I think it's quiet confusing what I did there. Thanks in advance. EDIT1 Okay sorry, I should have explained better. When I try to install it tells me something of dependency problems. • How can we make agile enjoyable for developers that like to personally, independently own large chunks from start to finish

  We’re roughly midway through our transition from waterfall to agile using scrum; we’ve changed from large teams in technology/discipline silos to smaller cross-functional teams. As expected, the change to agile doesn’t suit everyone. There are a handful of developers that are having a difficult time adjusting to agile. I really want to keep them engaged and challenged, and ultimately enjoying coming to work each day. These are smart, happy, motivated people that I respect on both a personal and a professional level. The basic issue is this: Some developers are primarily motivated by the joy of taking a piece of difficult work, thinking through a design, thinking through potential issues, then solving the problem piece by piece, with only minimal interaction with others, over an extended period of time. They generally complete work to a high level of quality and in a timely way; their work is maintainable and fits with the overall architecture. Transitioning to a cross-functional team that values interaction and shared responsibility for work, and delivery of working functionality within shorter intervals, the teams evolve such that the entire team knocks that difficult problem over. Many people find this to be a positive change; someone that loves to take a problem and own it independently from start to finish loses the opportunity for work like that. This is not an issue with people being open to change. Certainly we’ve seen a few people that don’t like change, but in the cases I’m concerned about, the individuals are good performers, genuinely open to change, they make an effort, they see how the rest of the team is changing and they want to fit in. It’s not a case of someone being difficult or obstructionist, or wanting to hoard the juiciest work. They just don’t find joy in work like they used to. I’m sure we can’t be the only place that hasn’t bumped up on this. How have others approached this? If you’re a developer that is motivated by personally owning a big chunk of work from end to end, and you’ve adjusted to a different way of working, what did it for you?

What should I be reading to understand where the other storage has gone? More details: I have an Ubuntu 11.10 server, that was set-up by data-center staff. It is running my own code (which is fairly prolific with log files, but otherwise doesn't store much stuff on the drive) duplicity for backups (which tends to store a lot of signature files) various other standard services, like Apache, nagios, etc. They are very lightly used. It has been up for about 4 months without a reboot. I lied about the du output (simplified it for effect). It also complained about not being able to access GVFS and the du processes's own resources. • Network really slow with TL-WN951N wireless card

  I literally just installed ubuntu and it seems to be working great except the network is deadly slow. I'm running a TL-WN951N wireless card which can download at about 600-700 KB/s in windows but in Ubuntu the max speed it seems to get is around 5KB/s. I guess I should note that my WAP is only wireless-G but like I said, I can get much better speeds in Windows. I'm testing the speeds by downloading files from here: http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/test/ Anyone have any idea? I saw some people recommend downloading drivers and compiling them myself but I'm really really new to all of this so would appreciate someone babying me through it so I don't brick my computer!
