  This particular problem has little do with SubVersion Repositories and more to do with the management of installed programs. My question revolves around the problem of installing a program from source. If I where to build a distro with no package management system what possibilities would I have for maintaining the program is up to date. My only idea would be to keep a record of all the programs installed from source and perform a periodic check to identify if a new version is out.

• Email is not sending when the script is running by CRON

  I wrote the simple backup bash script and at the end of it, it's sending an email to me that backup is ready. • Bacula Volume Retention and Automatic Recycling

  Will a bacula volume be recycled if: No more volumes are appendable The date of the last job on it is past the volume retention period Jobs on that volume are not past the job and file retention periods This is the way the manual reads to me, but I saw a post saying all retention periods have to be up before a volume is recycled (which does make less sense to me). Anyone know for sure from experience?

I'm currently hacking together a script that relies on the /proc/pid/environ feature in Linux (RHEL 4) to check for a particular environment variable. Trouble is, it seems certain environment variables aren't showing up in there for some reason.   I have several instances of Firefox with several different profiles running. Among them profiles with the names "software" and "test". I am trying to open an URL from a bash script to have it open in profile "test", like this: firefox -P "test" http://www.example.org/ However that opens it in profile "software" anyway. Any ideas? • command line find/replace help

  I've got a set of 5000+ files that I need to do a simple search and replace in. I have been doing it in a text editor (EditPlus) by opening 500 files at a time, doing a global search/replace, saving all, closing, etc. But, that's taking literally hours to do and it's boring and tedious and I already have done it once today and need to do it again because all the files got refreshed. Is there a way to do this via the Bash command line? Here's the details: Find onchange="document.location ='/products/view.html/view/'+this.value" Replace it with onchange="alert('Not implemented')" style="display: none" All of the files have a .HTM extension, but they are nested in several sub directories.

  I have a bunch of directories (folders, if you like) that follow this pattern \20121022 Description of the directory's contents goes here\ (some don't have it, just the date) and I need to rename them to follow the following pattern \2012-10-22 Description of the directory's contents ...\ Is there a way to do it using Windows cmd and the tools that come with it (namely, ren)? If not, what would be the most portable way to do it? I have a very restricted set of privileges on the machine I'm doing this on.

• Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

  A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful. • GNU Screen Draw Lag

  I like using screen with multiple splits. I usually like 3 sections Resource Monitoring using HTop Text Editor using VIM Command line using Bash My issue is that, when I am doing something that writes a good deal of text to STDOUT like running Make and if I am focused on that section, Screen lags on me. So much so, that the other sections no longer update and screen is not responsive to commands like CTRL-A + TAB. I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, but it appears to have something to do with the cursor location which blinks wildly while this is happening. I'm aware that using the vertical split functionality of Screen can lead to lag, but is this the cause? If so, is there a way to fix it aside from redirecting STDOUT?

• Enabling SFTP Access within PLESK

  I have a client who wants to ensure his upload is secure, so we are trying to enable SFTP for him on our Linux PLESK server. I have enabled SSH access to bin/bash for FTP accounts, and created a new user. When I attempt to SFTP using either the IP address or the domain name, this is the error FileZilla is giving me: Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error Error: Could not connect to server Here is some basic information regarding the server: Operating system Linux 2.6.24.5-20080421a Plesk Control Panel version psa v8.6.0_build86080930.03 os_CentOS 5 I had read in some places that I should reboot the SSH Service in Server - Services, however, there is no SSH Service within the list. I'm not really a server guy so it's quite possible I'm missing something obvious. Thanks for any help that you guys can provide!

• Is there a way to tell if a file is done copying?

  The scenario is this: Machine A has files I want to copy to Machine C. Machine A can't access C directly, but can access Machine B that can access Machine C. I am using scp to copy from Machine A to B, and then from B to C. Machine B has limited storage space, so as files come in, I need to copy them to C and delete them from B. The second copy is much faster, so this is no problem with bandwidth. I could do this by hand, but I am lazy. What I would like is to run a script on B or C that will copy each file to C as each one finishes. The scp job is running from A. So what I need is a way to ask (preferably from a bash script) if file X.avi is "done" copying. Each of these files is a different size, and I can't really predict size or time of completion. Edit: by the way, the file transfer times are something about 1 hour from A to B and about 10 minutes from B to C, if time scale matters at all.

The problem is that I cant seem to update this app on my phone via the ovi app; the 'download' link is disabled. Also tried the 'sw update' app, but it reports that all applications are up-to-date. Any idea how do this without installing/reinstalling the app? The phone model is Nokia 5800

• How do I run Munin plugins written in Ruby, using RVM?

  Hi! I try to run some Munin plugins written in Ruby. I would like to use RVM, so Munin needs to know where to find Ruby. I tried to change the line calling munin-cron in the cron file as follows: */5 * * * * munin bash -c 'source /usr/local/lib/rvm && rvm 1.9.2@munin && /usr/bin/munin-cron' This leads to error messages in munin-node.log, saying /usr/bin/env: ruby: No such file or directory When I change the plugins' shebangs to the actual path of the Ruby executable it works, but the RVM environment should be set so that '/usr/bin/env ruby' works. It does when I execute the plugins as root. Any ideas?

• Is there some way Linux editors can tell the programming language without the file extension?

  I am editing some scripts on Linux without the languages file extensions, and it seems that the editors, namely vi, nano and gedit are not applying syntax highlighting because the filenames don't use the language extensions. Is there some parameters to be passed or some setting that can enable them to recognize the language? Update: After some googling I realize that bash has that ability, at least to do some parsing or check the shebang at the top determine the language. By default Ubuntu does not install the complete vim package, so after installing it, the shell files are recognized. I don't know about nano or gedit, but vi and its graphical counterpart will do.

• Restoring files from blueprint on command

  I am setting up a server. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. I cannot modify what happens when the server shuts down entirely what I can do is run a command before the server runs the final shutdown save

• SSH: one user logs in, other don't

  Some users can ssh correctly, others don't. I have an admin user, which is in wheel. I used vsftpd for allowing FTP. I created a nologin user for FTP. Call this user "ftpuser". Now I want to allow sftp. It allows me to connect using admin user. I remove the nologin, by giving the user a shell via usermod -s /bin/bash ftpuser. It still doesn't allow me to connect from the ftpuser via sftp. The content of /home/ftpuser/.ssh is just the known_hosts file which contains "localhost" entry only. User permissions are (in theory) ok: ls -la /home working (admin) : drwx------ 18 admin admin 4096 Feb 6 15:33 admin non-working(ftpuser): drwx------ 3 ftpuser ftp 4096 Mar 26 15:25 ftpuser I haven't configured anything special on openssh. Does the ftpuser need anything extra than shell to enter via ssh?

So I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 and I've tried changing {install dir}/searchplugins/google.xml, but Firefox is just ignoring these changes. • Weird behaviour/rendering of backspace in Terminal.app when SSHing into zsh using tmux/screen

  Hi there, I just stumbled upon a weird problem. When I SSH into my server (centos, zsh) and I type some stuff and hit backspace It looks like a space - but internally it really deleted the characters. ls -l a Note that the space between land a is actually when I hit backspace. When I now hit return ls -a gets executed. This is only in zsh, in bash it works fine. Hope anyone has an idea what this is all about and how to fix this. Update: Only happens when using tmux/screen

• Take a screenshot of an entire webpage in Opera

  Is there some tool within Opera, or possibly an add-on, which will let me take a screenshot of an entire web page? I usually use Screengrab to do this with Firefox, but in this situation I want a screenshot of the page as Opera renders it (because I want to show the page as rendered with HTML5 form controls like date and time). I am currently using Opera 10.60 x86_64 on Fedora 12, so solutions that work in browser would be preferable rather than external programs.

  I am running a Mathematica script (this question probably doesn't fit in Mathematica.SE however) and I know that it generally takes up a lot of RAM and loads up my cores.
